We're back with four awesome discoveries you probably didn't hear about this week.

Idle ants inspire busy bots.

Researchers programmed robots to mimic the tunneling strategy of ants,

who dig efficiently with no jam-ups.

Turns out, only 30% of these fire ants were doing 70% of the tunneling,

while the rest dawdled or went elsewhere.

When the number of robots in a narrow tunnel went from three to four,

things got clogged and work stopped.

Ants know instinctively how to avoid ant jams.

Those instincts may be programmed into future autonomous robot swarms called into action

for disaster recovery or even tunneling missions on other planets.

Now a knock to the noggin.

A new study shows even a few degrees difference in head-neck angle can alter how much your

head rotates after a hard, fast hit…

and significantly affect your risk for concussion.

The more angular acceleration, the greater the likelihood of a concussion.

There could be implications for helmet design and how to brace for impact.

Turns out positions that could prevent concussion might put people at greater risk for other injuries.

Engineers have designed a security screening system that could be cheaper, easier and less invasive --

using good old fashioned WiFi.

Wireless signals can penetrate bags and detect objects like guns and the volume of liquids

like chemicals used in explosives.

The "Suspicious Object Detection System" is 90 to 99 percent accurate.

With further improvements, this system could make the grade for schools and venues like

stadiums and theme parks.

Chew on this.

It's commonly thought that improving nutrition in poorer countries

means clearing forests for more farmland.

A new study suggests the opposite – finding that children in 27 developing nations

have better nutrition…when they live near forests...and that the forests are the cause.

Meaning that protecting forests could be a powerful tool in helping children get the

range of nutrients they need to thrive.

And there you go.

See you next week with four more awesome discoveries with funding from NSF.

You shined a light on my lonely world

The way that you talked to me...

I will never forget

Flowers, flowers, flowers, flying away

Our time together

We can't stop the tears from overflowing

I understand that

I can't go up to the sky

I can only watch

It's farewell time now

Thank you...

We love you so much

You'll always be watching our backs

This is our song of departure...

Be Yourself and You'll Never Fail - Duration: 6:17.

Be Yourself and You'll Never Fail

We tend to want to be like other people instead of cultivating our own authenticity.

But why is it so difficult to be yourself?.

Maybe it's because things that don't fit into the status quo are often criticized until we realize how great they really are.

We're scared of being wrong, making mistakes or looking ridiculous.

But did you ever think of how important and liberating it is to just be yourself?.

Believe in yourself in spite of everything.

At times, it's difficult to believe in yourself.

It's easy to be in a bad mood when everything goes wrong or when you barely see any results after working so hard.

However, difficulties and problems will always be there.

What may not always be there is the beauty of your individuality.

It's easy, then, to fall into the trap of comparing yourself with others.

You may feel depressed for not being like other people or for not having achieved what other people have achieved.

However, it's important not to forget everything you've done.

It's even more important that you don't lose yourself.

Believe in yourself despite everything, because you will go far in life.

Be yourself and you'll go far.

You'll reach the top of the highest mountain by being yourself because no mistake will give you a reason to throw in the towel.

We already erroneously believe that mistakes are synonymous with failure.

Every stone in your path, every person who tries to thwart you isn't an impassable barrier, but a learning opportunity.

You have everything you need to knock down any wall that prevents you from moving forward.

If difficulties didn't exist, then you couldn't grow, learn, or mature.

Be yourself and don't worry about making some mistakes.

It's time for you to pursue your dreams and to get where you want to go.

Don't fail by not being yourself.

The only time you truly fail is when you stop being yourself.

Stop waiting for your problems to solve themselves and take responsibility for transforming them into opportunities.

It's time to get out of the comfort zone that your fears and doubts have carried you to.

Stop thinking "What will they say?" and start doing what you really want.

Stop trying to fit by trying to do what others do.

Be different, because you are different, unique, authentic and incomparable.

Just worry about yourself and what you want, and don't you dare allow yourself to change to please others.

Protect and care for your essence.

This is an integral part of you, so don't lose it.

Have confidence in yourself.

You have skills that others don't have.

Do you doubt this? This is because you don't value your them like you should.

In other words, you don't have confidence in yourself.

It's interesting to discover how much we really self-sabotage ourselves.

We think that we treat ourselves well when, in fact, we really cause ourselves a lot of harm.

Valuing the little things that make you unique is one of the first steps that will lead you in the right direction.

We've gotten into the habit of not having confidence in ourselves but trusting others' abilities for too long.

We've got to stop believing that we're incapable and we need to stop failing ourselves.

It's time to start treating yourself well, to give yourself words of encouragement and to urge yourself to keep going when life gets difficult.

It's time to be yourself.

You don't need anyone to tell you "everything will be fine.

" Instead, you need to encourage and have confidence in yourself.

Remember that you'll never fail, or lose, or make terrible mistakes by being yourself.

This is because everything will be a learning process and an opportunity to advance in life and be whatever you want to be.

Ann Norris, Ben Rhodes' Wife: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 7:58.

Ann Norris, Ben Rhodes' Wife: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Ann Norris is the former foreign policy adviser to Barack Obama.

She is married to Ben Rhodes, who served as President Obama's Deputy National Security Adviser.

In 2017, some of President Trump's advisers circulated a memo suggesting that Ben Rhodes and other former Obama staffers were conspiring to bring down the Trump administration.

You can read more about that memo here.

Trump's staffers called the conspiracy the "Echo Chamber conspiracy" and theorized that Ben Rhodes was its leader.

Rhodes is "likely the brain behind this operation," the memo read.

The memo also refers, briefly to Ann Norris, mentioning that she is Rhodes' wife and implying that her position, as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for legislative affairs in the State Department, may benefit Rhodes.

Ben Rhodes has denied that he was ever involved in any such conspiracy.

Here's what you need to know about Ann Norris:.

Media Reports Say She Was Targeted by a Shadowy Group Called Black Cube, Which Tried to Discredit Proponents of the Iran Nuclear Deal.

In May, the New Yorker reported that a group of "Israeli Operatives" was collecting information about former Obama officials, in an effort to discredit them.

The New Yorker says that the Israeli plan, code named "Black Cube," was deliberately targeting people who had been proponents of the Iran nuclear deal.

Israel's government is staunchly opposed to any deal that would redue sanctions and controls on Iran.

The New Yorker reported that "a woman who introduced herself as Eva Novak and claimed to work for a London-based film company called Shell Productions asked [Ann] Norris to consult on a movie that she described as " 'All the President's Men' meets 'The West Wing.

Norris apparently turned down the woman's request, which she found too "bizarre" to be true.

You can read more about Black Cube and their alleged operation here.

She Graduated from the US Naval War College With a Degree in National Security.

Norris went to college at UCLA, graduating in 2000 with a dual degree in International Relations and US Literature.

She went on to graduate school at the US Naval War College, where she earned an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Norris worked as foreign policy adviser to California senator Barbara Boxer for nine years.

From there, she went on to work for the State Department, first in the department's office of global women's issues, and then in the State Department's Bureau of Legislative Affairs.

You can read her full work and education history on her LinkedIn page, here.

Norris and Rhodes Have Two Children.

Ben and Ann have two children.

Their oldest is a girl, Ella, who was born in 2015.

Since leaving their jobs in the government, they have had another child.

The couple is relatively private about their lives, and do not publicize their family.

They seldom appear in pictures together or with their children.

Norris Grew Up in California and Told the NY Times She 'Longed' to Return Home.

During their years working for the Obama administration, Ann and Ben lived in an "unpretentious" neighborhood in Washington, DC.

A Nwe York Times profile said that it was near Ben's favorite college bar, and also close enough to their daughter's daycare that they could walk her there.

But Ann, a California native, told the Times that she was longing to return home to California.

Ann Norris grew up in California and went to college at UCLA.

She earned a double degree in International Relations and American Literature.

Ben Rhodes Says Working at the White House 'Took a Toll' on His Relationships.

In an interview with NPR, Ben Rhodes talked about the "toll" that working in the highly-charged White House took on him and on his relationships.

Rhodes said, "I had the Secret Service actually patrolling my block at some point.

I didn't sign up for that.

I went to work to write speeches for Barack Obama! One morning I left my house to get my dry cleaning … and a Fox News camera literally chases me up the stairs in my apartment building, camera pointed at me going, "What about Benghazi?" By the way this is like two years after Benghazi.

I didn't know at the time how much that was making me kind of angry.

You push it down, but the experience of working became much less joyful and cynicism does creep in and your relationships suffer a bit because you become kind of grumpy.

I stopped sleeping very well.

… This all looks like a game from afar, but they are human beings who are in these jobs and it can take a real toll.".

White House Party Crashers - You Make me Want to Die - Duration: 3:01.

I don't know what to do I sound so cliche

But sitting next to you, Is what makes my day,

A little bit better But, I'll never say that out loud

So I put the pen down, On paper and save it for later

When i'm drunk enough and tough enough, To stand a little straighter

And say the things I need to say

Instead of walking away

Cause I know that I don't have it all figured out

And I know that you notice when I open my mouth

Every word that comes out, Trembles with doubt

Sometimes I can't hide that I just want to shout out

You make me want to die And you don't even try

You're just so perfect I'm just not worth it

You make me want to die

You're eyes see right through me It's panic inducing

I'm losing all trace of the words that i'm choosing

You sense it's a train wreck As nervous thoughts connect

Inside of my anxious mind Leaving all hope behind

Why can't I think of a single thing to say to you

Sometimes I wish I was just a little braver To say the things I need to say

Instead of walking away

Cause I know that I don't have it all figured out

And I know that you notice when I open my mouth

Every word that comes out, Trembles with doubt

Sometimes I can't hide that I just want to shout out

You make me want to die And you don't even try

You're just so perfect I'm just not worth it

You make me want to die

You make me want to die And you don't even try

John Sidney McCain Senior: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 13:18.

John Sidney McCain Senior: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Naval History and Heritage Command Vice Admiral John S.

McCain Sr.

Taken on board either USS HANCOCK (CV-19) or USS ESSEX (CV-9).

John Sidney McCain Senior was the grandfather of Arizona Senator John Sidney McCain, III.

The elder McCain, who had the nickname "Slew," was a four-star admiral in the U.S.

Navy.

He passed away just one day after returning home from serving in WWII, at the age of 61.

Senator McCain looked up to his grandfather and wrote about him extensively in his memoir Faith of My Fathers.

For clarity, references to "McCain" below will apply to Senior.

Here's what you need to know.

McCain Had a Successful Military Career but Did Not Originally Stand out at the Naval Academy.

John Sidney McCain was born in Carroll County, Mississippi on August 9, 1884 to plantation-owning parents.

He originally attended the University of Mississippi.

His initial plan from there was to join his brother, who was attending West Point.

The McCain had a long history of military service.

According to information on the official U.S.

Navy website, the McCain's traditionally served in the Army.

There was at least one family member who served on the staff of George Washington.

Another fought in the Civil War.

There was a McCain who became a three-star general in the army during WWI.

But John Sidney McCain Senior took the entrance exams for the United States Naval Academy and inadvertently changed the course of his family's legacy.

When he passed and was offered a spot, he decided to forgo West Point in favor of the Naval Academy.

According to naval historian E.B.

Potter, who is quoted in the 1999 biography John McCain: An American Odyssey by Robert Timberg, McCain's performance at the Naval Academy was "lackluster." Out of 116 members of his graduating class, he ranked 79th.

He was described in the yearbook as ""The skeleton in the family closet of 1906.".

McCain Sailed Around the World as Part of Teddy Roosevelt's 'Great White Fleet'.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, John McCain Senior spent the next few years at sea.

The ships he served on included the battleship OHIO, the cruiser BALTIMORE, the destroyer CHAUNCEY, and the gunboat PANAY.

From 1907 until 1909, McCain sailed around the world as part of the Great White Fleet commissioned by President Teddy Roosevelt.

The fleet was made up of 16 battleships.

The mission was to travel around the world to show off the new power of the United States Navy.

During the final stretch of that mission, McCain sailed on the USS CONNECTICUT.

He also served in the Asiatic Squadron, before he was ordered back on land at the base in San Diego.

Prior to the U.S.

entering the first Word War, McCain got his first taste of true leadership in Charleston, South Carolina.

He was the Director of Machinist Mates School from 1912 until 1914.

McCain served aboard the SAN DIEGO for the majority of his time in WWI.

The armored cruiser was responsible for escorting other ships through the first leg of the journey to Europe.

McCain Took to the Skies Later in his Career and Was Instrumental in the Navy's Development of Aviation Strategy.

In the biography about referenced above by author Robert Timberg, John Sidney McCain Senior was a "pioneer in the development of naval aviation, notably in the strategy and tactics for employing attack carriers." In 1935, McCain made the decision to begin flight training.

He was in his early 50s at the time.

Here's the story: According to the U.S.

Navy website, the Navy decided to expand his air presence during the 1930s.

They had naval officers who could fly, but few with experience as commanders.

By this point, McCain had risen in the ranks and become a Captain.

He was asked if he'd like to go to the flight school in Pensacola, Florida, and he agreed.

McCain enthusiastically took the assignment and trained alongside men more than half his age.

He set a record as the oldest person to land a plane on a pitching carrier deck.

he earned his golden wings at the age of 52, in September 1936.

McCain Served as a Commander in the Pacific During World War II.

Naval History and Heritage CommandPatuxent River, Maryland, April 1, 1943: Rear Admiral John S.

McCain, Sr.

(far right) at the commissioning ceremony of the Naval Air Station.

John Sidney McCain Senior was promoted to the title of Rear Admiral in February of 1941.

He had already spent time commanding two naval air stations and the RANGER carrier.

After the United States officially entered the war following the attack at Pearl Harbor, McCain's force was the one ready to defend the mainland in case the Japanese kept coming.

In May of 1942, McCain was made the commander of all land-based naval aircraft in the South Pacific.

He was briefly ordered back to Washington, D.C.

where he was named the Chief of Naval Aeronautics.

It was during this stint that he was rewarded his third star.

Following that stint, he returned to the Pacific.

In the summer of 1944, he commanded the Second Fast Carrier Force Pacific.

In the final months of the war, McCain commanded the Fast Carrier Task Force.

He was also awarded the Navy Cross.

His grandson, Arizona Senator John McCain wrote in his memoir that his grandfather did not want to stay for the surrender of the Japanese.

The elder McCain reportedly told Admiral William "Bull" Halsey, ""I don't give a damn about seeing the surrender." Halsey's answer apparently was, "Maybe you do, but you're not going.

You were commanding this task force when the war ended, and I'm making sure history gets it straight." The surrender took place on the USS Missouri on Sept.

2, 1945.

According to the biography written by Robert Timberg, Rear Admiral Robert Carney believed that McCain Senior had a heart attack at some point at sea.

But he believed McCain somehow hid it so that he could keep commanding his force.

The biography quotes Carney as saying, "He knew his number was up, but he wouldn't lie down and die until he got home.".

John Sidney McCain Senior Died Hours After Returning Home from World War II.

John Sidney McCain Senior did not get a chance to enjoy being back home at the end of the second world war.

He reportedly sat down during the welcome-home party, suffered a heart attack and passed away.

His grandson wrote in his memoir that the Navy physician that the heart attack was brought on by "complete fatigue resulting from the strain of the last months of combat.".

After his death, Congress promoted him to full admiral out of respect for his service.

His obituary was also featured on the front page of the New York Times.

McCain is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

The USS John S.

McCain, a destroyer first launched by the U.S.

Navy in 1992, was named in honor of both John Sidney McCain Senior and his son, John Sidney, Jr.

it they say holla yeah Shui genie and this is a literal

translation to that is water crystal mud which is makes sense that's wherever

okay huh so there's straws and then

beautiful plastic yeah dude take one okay oh I see how this is well I wonder

what kind of see we're adults here so we're learning how to play with slime it

has no smell to it but that's probably good so you don't get nauseous whoa look

at that oh my god this is cool I you know these

days kids are making all kinds of slime there's like fluffy slime chunky slime I

don't know what time we're being hauled so wait so it's like so it's only

lightly tinted oh yeah you can still see the tin so you might a turbo man okay so

we I'm wondering I'm gonna do the strong it'd be cool if they were like scented

that would be cool I wonder though if that's like

a different level yeah because kids might be tempted to do yeah we're

already tempted to you this yeah so I'm going to do the straw I'm thinking I'm

gonna try to blow a bubble in the stronger side but maybe you know I maybe

it's kind of like that balloon thing you gotta like put it here and you stick it

in oh my good one I did a little one okay pop though okay maybe I do you

think has anything to do with trying to do circular motions with this like are

you trying to wrap this around okay keep going keep going

that was cool well I wonder if this could like get your nice mask

this is what kids do a slug around your here look I just got my hair cut oh they

can't even see I'm cut off oh my gosh wait I'm getting off the

covers on my face looks like an egg yolk oh my god I put it oh it's nice and cool

oh yeah maybe to like you know when you deep puff your eyes you want like

coolness like oh just pop there oh don't put that on Kim oh wait you just

attached it back

Wow yeah just got your hair done now you're doing your face done but this

part is dripping off curl it back around here you go oh no oh no it's non-toxic

it says don't eat

oh wow oh this is awesome I'm loving this game this is how keep

Flemish slime let your baby come oh I know that's why the straws here so I can

breathe easy strong this is the purpose of the straw so you can put this on your

mouth but you can breathe

now there's parent just like the finally off the bat oh yeah okay

now you don't rub me with the slime oh God thank you

keep going oh yeah okay this is how kids play with slime I'm just being honest

like that's like here let me rub it on your face you say oh yeah fine fine

doing it haha it burns oh my god it's too big Tom okay

get your only chance to prove myself oh

my god it's just wait did you do this whoa whoa when you're done with it it's

good this ticket snip its natural form it's like an egg yolk again whoa wait I

know these disappear no they're whoa this is so cool just

like this didn't think it was handcrafted yeah like this is do I don't

know at the same time I think I was pretty spot-on like what they do with

the slime because I always hear them talking about making it and buying it

well what do they do to play with it I think we got that like hit the nail on

the head I think that's what they do yeah so it was really good experience

I thought the slime was good quality even though it kind of does stick to

your hair I can't do really stuck to my face no and I don't feel like my I'm not

itchy or anything yeah it's something you can just peel

off yeah so it's pretty kid-friendly to play with and your hands don't small

weird after all yeah yeah so cleanup is fast thanks so much for checking us out

have a great rest of your day love you mean it bye
