Erika Matsuo: The first request is from Saneyoshi Sakuya, a 9yo third grade elementary school student from Tokyo.
"Dear Detectives, good evening. I have a dog since 2 years ago. Her name is Kinako and she's a female.
She has a light brown color that's reminds me of a kinako(*a japanese sweet roasted soybean flour), so I gave her that cute name.
Nishida: Good.
There's a obaachan(*grandma) in our neighborhood that everytime time she goes out,
she walks in front of our house and gives Kinako a treat. She cares so much about her.
But there is one problem: That grandma keeps calling her Tarou(*a typical male japanese name).
Nishida: Even though she is Kinako?
My mother told her: "her name isn't Tarou, she is Kinako", .
but next day, the grandma kept saying "tarou-chan tarou-chan" again
Since I gave her that unique name, I wish that grandma memorise our dog's correct name and call her by that.
I don't want to correct the grandma everytime she calls our dog by wrong name, so I want a help from a detective to make her memorise in a unrude, gently manner." That's the request.
Nishida: That's kinda cute request.
Maeda: Yes, yes. This a request from 9yo Sakuya. She is a very gentle girl.
Let's see if we succeed to make the grandma memorise the dog's name with that gentleness.
Nishida: Please.
Maeda: Ah. She is barking.
Oh. Here she is. Kinachan.
She is very watchful.
That's ok.
Kinakochan?
That's probably because she is hearing a new type of human voice(*jokes about his own lisp voice)
Ah, hello there!
Sakuya: Hello!
Maeda: Hello!
Sakuya?
Sakuya: y-yes...
Maeda: Nice to meet you.
(*sees her behavior) I'm pretty sure you are a good person.
Why I'm feeling like you are so gentle.
Thanks for the request.
Sakuya: Ok.
Maeda: Can we talk a little?
Sakuya: Sure.
The grandma of our neighborhood keeps calling Kinako a Taro.
Since she is not a male dog, I want her to call Kinako by the correct name.
Maeda: That grandma comes here everyday?
Sakuya: She comes here almost everyday.
Maeda: So she misnames almost everyday.
Mom: Yes.
I recorded a video of her.
Maeda: You recorded a video?
Mom: Yes.
Maeda: That's great.
That camera looks gentle too.
Can I see your video of her?
Obaachan: Good morning!
Tarouchan! Tarouchan!
Maeda: She appeared suddenly.
Here she comes.
Kinako is so excited.
Oh snap. She is calling her Tarou.
Ughhh...She is calling her Tarou.
Obaachan: You are so happy. Happiness always comes first.
Maeda: Kinako is so excited because of that food. Obaachan: Here you go!
What if grandma is actually a grandpa?
Like if we are the ones who are actually being wrong.
This can't happen right?
Obaachan: Oh you already eat it? You're so fast. Here you go!
Maeda: She is treating her like a son.
Obaachan: There's no more. No moreee..
"Ah I want it!". You cannot say that. I don't have food anymore.
Sakuya: Maybe she had a dog in the past.
Maeda: Oh, and the dog's name...
Sakuya: ... maybe it was Tarou.
Maeda: I get it.
Mom: That's a possibility.
Maybe she is sentimentaly visiting a dog she had in the past...
Obaachan: See you later!
Mom: She is so cute.
Maeda: She is leaving like she don't want to.
Makes me wanna call her Kinako instead.
So, she really believes the dog's name is Tarou.
Mom: I'm always wondering If I should correct her or not.
Maeda: I see. I know that feeling. Watching her behaviour, I will probably be in the same situation.
Sayuka: She has a very bright mood.
Maeda: Right?
Mom: That's why I have been wondering how I could correct her without being rude...
Maeda: Ohh.. Director, that's what I call "tender village problems".
Let's try the "kinako challenge".
Casually "kinako challenge".
It's written Kinako.
Usually there's no paper in that place right?
Sakuya: Since it's raining I think she will come close to the paper.
Maeda: She didn't come yet?
Sakuya: No.
Maeda: So she didn't "early morning Tarou" yet?
10:40 am
Obbachan: Yes! Tarouchan!
Why you are not barking? Because it rained?
Rain!
Maeda: Obaachan is teaching Kinako about rain.
Obaachan: It rained!
what happened? Why are you not barking?
Maeda: She didn't notice the paper. Oh wow, she is at the perfect angle right now.
She is in the "kinako angle"!
Sayuka: Please see it.
Maeda: Obaachan is watching Kinako instead of "Kinako".
Obaachan, where are you going?
Obaachan? Oh that's a fail.
Huh?
Obaachan: Tarouchan! Bye bye!
I'm leaving. I'm leaving- Mom: Cute.
Obaachan: Byebye!
Kinako Challenge - Fail
Maeda: Damn....
I have a suggestion, how about name her Tarou?
Mom: But she is a female.
Maeda: How many times a day she comes here?
Mom: 2 times: in the morning and on the way back home in the afternoon.
Maeda: 2 times? Mom: Yes.
Maeda: So this is our last chance.
Sakuya do you have any idea?
Sakuya: How about put a mic in her collar and someone talk through that? To make like Kinako is speaking.
Maeda: Huh? Put a mic in her collar and...?
Sakuya: and say "My name is not Tarou, it's Kinako", like Kinako is actually the one who is speaking. Since obaachan likes Kinako, I think she will remember her correct name that way.
Maeda: Ohh...
Because Obaachan always talks to Kinako ,right?
But if you use my voice she will think that dog is cursed.
Kinako looks like she is feeling our nervousness. Like "something is gonna change today".
Afternoon 3:50pm
Maeda: Here she comes! Obaachan: Oh, what happened? Why you are in that location?
What happened?
Maeda: Obaachan,
Obaachan: Huh?
Maeda: Hello.
Obaachan: What happened?
Maeda: Just basking in the sun.
Obaachan come here.
Obaachan: Huh?
Maeda: Obaachan can you hear me?
Here, listen. Obaachan.
Obaachan: Tarouchan.
Maeda: Obaachan.
Obaachan: Tarouchan...
Maeda: I...
Obaachan: Tarouchan...
Maeda: I'm not Tarou, actually.
Obaachan: What happened? Huh? What happened?
Sakuya: Can you listen to me please... My name is Kinako and I'm a female.
Obaachan: Really?
Sakuya: My name is not Tarou.
Can you call me Kinako from now?
Obaachan: Huh, what?
Sakuya: Can you call me Kinako from now?
Obaachan: Chisako?
Sakuya: Kinako.
Obaachan: Kinakochan!
Sakuya: Yes, Kinako.
Obaachan: Ok, you are Kinako. You weren't Tarou. Now I know.
Obaachan: Kinakochan!
Sakuya: Thanks! Call me by that name ok?
Obaachan: Yes, I will call you Kinako from now.
I forget things very fast you know.
Sakuya: So please do your best to don't forget my name ok?
Obaachan: I got it, I got it.
I will write in my notebook.
Sakuya: Yes, Kinako.
Obaachan: Kinako, right? Got it got it.
See you later ok? Byebye.
Sakuya: Byebye.
Obaachan: Byebye.
Sakuya: See you tomorrow.
Obaachan: See you!
Sakuya: See you later.
Obaachan: I hearing it from somewhere but where it comes from?
Maeda: Hello.
Obaachan.... Obaachan: What? What happened?
Maeda: Hello, nice to meet you.
Kinako is always happy to receive treats from you.
Obaachan: Really? I'm doing this without permission so maybe I souldn't be doing this.
Maeda: They are always very happy to see how you care so much about Kinako, but since her actually name is Kinako...
Obaachan: Where I got this name from?
Maeda: Have you ever had a dog in the past?
Obaachan: Yes, an akita dog.
Maeda: What was his name? It was Tarou?
Obaachan: No.
Maeda: lol wtf
Obaachan: I guess...
Maeda: You are not sure about that too.
Obaachan, you are having hard time remembering dog's name huh?
So did you memorise the dog's name?
Obaachan: Yes.
Maeda: What is her name?
Obaachan: Huh, not Sakura, what was her name...
Maeda: You forget so easily.
Next day.
Obaachan: Good morning! Kinakochan! Kinakochan!
Kinakochan! Good morning!
Kinako challenge succeed
Erika: So cute.
Nishida: Obaachan is so cute.
Maeda: Obaachan is really a good person, as you see, that's why Sakuya was so resistant to correct her.
At the end of the day, Obaachan's daughter came to see her, and when she was asked to write the dog's name in the paper she wrote Chisako. But we corrected her later
Nishida: Cute. That was amazing. Thanks for your work.
