Today we are going to talk to you about the 25 most common nouns in English. That's coming up.
I keep doing this
It's your thing now
Yeah
Welcome to today's lesson.
So today we're going to talk to you about the 25 most common nouns in English.
And these are nouns that were taken from the Oxford English Corpus,
which is just basically a collection of the English language
and for more information, we'll leave a link in the description
We're going to each say a word and the other person has to come up with a quick example on the spot using that word.
Now we don't know each other's nouns
So we're going to try and do it just off the top of our head.
Are you ready? Are YOU ready?
Yes
Alright, here we go.
That was a terrible.
So number 25 is
fact
Really? Yes, fact.
Okay. Wow, alright, so a sentence with fact
If you study with us, you will learn English. That is a fact.
Fact. True story.
Number 24 is problem.
Can't think of one right now.
This morning I had a problem. What is it? We didn't have any water so I couldn't wash my hair.
It's the first thing I came up with. Wes: That's not a fact.
Okay, number 23 is group.
Group, okay: Let's form a study group so we can learn together.
Come together, group of people.
Number 22 is number.
My favorite number is six.
Is it really? 6, oh.? Yeah, cause you were born on the six. Yeah, my favorite number is... six.
It's when we got married. Oh, yeah.
We also got married on the 6th because it was already my favorite number - I
Yea, 6 is my favorite number too.
I think it's strange for the place it's in, but number 21 is company.
Company mm-hmm
Okay, we hope to start a company.
Company- a business, yeah. But you could have company like a group of people.
I think it's probably more the business.
Number 20 is government.
government, okay um
sentence with government
The US government just shut down not too long ago.
It did shut down temporarily. Yeah, the government did. Good, good example.
Number 19 is point.
Point? Point.
Okay, so this is a noun, not a verb.
Alright, alright, so I if somebody is right, then I could say:
Yea, you know: you have a point.
Or it could be a point like you can score points in a match.
These multiple meaning words can really probably drive up the way it's used.
Number 18 is case.
apparently a case
Okay, so you could say that was a hard hard case to crack.
You see this in these like mystery... like Sherlock Holmes or something,
solves a case.
Or I bought a case of beer.
Really, did you? No, I didn't but it's a good example, right? A case of something.
Okay, so number 17 is week.
like weekday. Oh!
I thought you were talking about weak- like in "not strong". I was like: That's an adjective!
Week, okay. I could say: Hey, what are you going to do this week? What are you doing this week?
16 (That's where we're at, right?) 16 is work.
This one I expected, obviously. It's a popular word.
This noun's kind of got you, huh? Well, no because it's such a common noun, that there's so many things that you can use it with.
You could say: I go to work at 7 a.m.
Every morning or something... or I start work at 5. Ah, see... now they're coming to me.
Number 15 is place.
place
Okay: We live in a nice place.
Number 14: woman.
Well: My mother is an extraordinary woman.
It's a good word.
Do you think she's watching this right now? If you are: Ciao, mama! Hi, Lali!
Number 13: eye.
I was thinking the pronoun. I was thinking: Oh, this is easy.
You can say: oh, you got beautiful eyes. People tell me that all the time.
He does. He has really beautiful eyes. Big blue eyes.
Number 12 is child.
Oh, that's a cute one. Oh gosh. Um. Okay. The child was very annoying.
I guess. What are you trying to say?
Number 11 is part.
There are many different car parts.
Number 10! We have entered the top 10.
25 most common nouns... Number 10 is hand.
Wes writes with his left hand
My left hand, it's true.
Number 9 is life.
life
You could say like: We have a great life. We get to work with all of you guys. It's great life.
Number 8 is world.
Um
I'd love to travel the world. If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? Argentina.
You?
I would go to... I think I would go to Korea actually, yeah. I used to live there. I miss Korean food.
Why am I not surprised that this word is more common than the other one? Number 7 is man.
I am a man.
That's my sentence. I am an extraordinary man. How about that?
You're just copying my sentence. I am copying your sentence!
Number 6 - and I actually probably thought this would be higher up is- thing.
Thing
Oh yeah, that's a good one. My favorite thing to eat is chocolate.
I think it's one of those words that a lot of teachers would tell you not to use. Be more specific.
Tell me: what thing are you talking about?
Number five! We're getting close to number one!
Oh, I have to say it! That's you, yeah.
Number five: day.
Day. Oh, okay, you could say, well: What's your favorite part of the day?
What's your favorite part of the day?
Number 4 is way.
I can see why this is so popular - cause you can ask: Which way are you going? or ...
I always think of that song:
Show me the way
I forget who sings it, but...
Number three is year.
year, okay um
This year is 2018.
It's very factual.
Yes, this year, 2018, it's going to be a great year.
Number two- the second most popular noun in the English language- is... I forgot, wait, hold on.
I want to make sure I get it. Oh okay. Yes number two is person.
Let's see... My favorite person is a cat. Just kidding!
Sorry mm-hmm. Wes is my favorite person.
Thank you. Oh
Because I'm an extraordinary man? Eh.
Number one. Are you ready?
I really like that this is number one actually.
One is time.
time
Just a question I think most people ask: What time is it?
What time is it?
Out of all of these nouns, which is your favorite?
Which one do you think? Which one do you like?
A Woman.
I like world.
