What's up guys gavin here and in this video we're gonna talk about the
evolutionary psychology of fear and why most of the things that are holding you
back and most of the things that are keeping you in this fearful state are
actually just ghost stories and they're not real but they feel real but after
this video you're gonna know how to use your higher-level thinking to break free
from that and stop those primal feelings from coming up stopping you from doing
what you need to do we're gonna get back in one second again in this video
alright guys if you like this content subscribe hit that Bell notification
leave me a comment it will really help the channel grow and help spread this
information to more people now let's dive in to this psychology of fear and
to do so let's go back in time and start to understand the evolutionary
evolutionary process so number one the first thing was as we were evolving and
we were much less evolved beings we didn't have as higher-level thinking as
higher-level faculties but the main thing we wanted to do was survive so we
adapted and evolved this brain called the reptilian brain our amygdala and our
amygdala kept us safe within the physical world so if you are walking
close to a cliff you wouldn't jump off it if the saber-toothed tiger was in the
bushes you would get a strong sense and you would get away right so we developed
these very strong survival instincts now that's our reptilian brain over time we
started to adapt and evolve other brains like our mammalian brain which was our
social brain it allows us to feel these different emotions and navigate in a
social tribal environment it's what tells us what status we're at it's what
tells us who likes us who doesn't like us how to play the game of life socially
then we evolved a newer brain which is called our neocortex which is who the
character neo represented in the movie The Matrix
he was the newest brain the one Neil and this is our ability to think about
thinking to think five years into the future to be critical to be rational all
of these higher level thought processes now since we have these three different
brains and we can't really you know it's not like we're looking at them and
seeing them we still get these strong survival feelings we still use our
mammalian brain and we use our neocortex but they don't really communicate very
well together so when you're feeling a strong sense of fear let's say you're
feeling like you're in danger your other brains shut down for that
moment and you feel this fear and you kind of have no rational thinking of
point they call this the fight-or-flight response so you get that response and
you kind of freeze up or you flee from the situation now when you start to
understand this you start to realize okay that's a normal thing and that's a
normal response that's how I am wired however what are all the situations in
life that are causing my amygdala to fire and put me into a fearful state
that aren't actually real well a good example would be now think about a bunch
of people on an island and one day someone gets eaten by a shark and you
know over you know and let's say 50 years past and for 50 years they've been
playing this shark attack on the news but nobody in 50 years has ever gotten
eaten by a shark again around that area or anywhere close and they've been in
the water thousands and thousands of times but every time they get into the
water they still feel this fear at a very high level because they're
constantly thinking about these that situation because it's always on the
news now think about the news in general why does the news play 13 out of 14
stories that are negative versus positive it's because we are adapted to
look at look for those situations to stay safe
so the news understands to get more eyeballs on their programming they need
to have more negative stories that make people feel like they're gonna be more
safe in the physical environment but it's actually just causing people to be
in more fear so when you start to understand this you start to realize
that your reticular activating system gets what it focuses on so this is why
if you buy a car and you drive it off the lot you start to see that same car
everywhere this is why whatever you're focused on currently you will see more
of anywhere you go does that mean that there's more of it everywhere and does
that mean that it was what wasn't there before
no was already there objectively but your subjective mind is only focused on
what it's been thinking about recently this is called a cognitive bias we think
more about the things that we think about recently and that dominates our
thoughts and that dominates our environment this is why if you were to
look at anything around this environment and I were to ask you think of
everything that's green focus on green focus on green focus on green and you
were to look around and you were see everything that's green and then
say remember everything that was black you wouldn't be able to remember it
because all you were doing was focusing on the green this is a psychological
thing that they've tested over and over again with human beings when they focus
on one thing it's hard for them to see anything else this has been tested
countless times to see because our conscious brain only has make a very
small amount of bits of information that it can process but our subconscious
brain is processing like thousands of times more information so our conscious
brain barely sees anything in compared to our subconscious your subconscious
right now is beating your heart it has its dealing with trillions of processes
of cells and neurons and all this happening automatically for you and then
your conscious mind emerges out of all that and can only see a very small
amount of everything so when you're in these situations where like these
fearful things are coming up you have to start to ask yourself is this a real
physical danger to me is this a real thing or am I actually just being
tricked to believe to be in fear am i being tricked from all these angles am i
in anxiety because I keep creating all these ghost stories in my head of what
might happen or am i rationally thinking about it this would be like somebody
getting into a glass elevator and the chances of anything bad happening to
them would be basically zero but they're really scared of the height that they're
at and they're scared that something could happen this is why people love
rollercoasters because it gives you that sense of excitement and fear that you're
in danger but you're in it's a very small amount of danger you're in much
more danger on driving a car or on a motorcycle but people do that all the
time without as much fear so you have to start to ask yourself rationally what
things I might want am I getting triggered by a my amygdala that are
causing me way more fear than it's actually really true and what are the
things that are actual things that I should fear and you start to see this
rationally and now you can take action in spite of fear there's a great book
called feel the fear and do it anyways or a great book called the flinch when a
boxer when I when I started boxing I would you know it was super hard to do
sparring because as soon as I would get punched in the face even though I'd
always been doing all this pad work bag were called
all this stuff I thought I was good as soon as I get punched in the face all
that other stuff would like disappear my technique ago everything would get worse
because I started getting that fight-or-flight response and I started
to freeze up this is the same in your life if you are not feeling the fear and
doing it anyways on a regular basis and training yourself to stop flinching and
stop being and and overcoming those challenges then you're gonna be the type
of person who keeps avoiding everything and stays in this fearful state even
though most of the things that are happening to are just again ghost
stories so start to ask yourself why am I scared of this thing should I actually
be scared of this thing what's the worst-case scenario that could happen
what is the chance of that happening is it one out of a thousand and I'm still
fearing it every single day what are the probabilities of this actually happening
and then if it did happen could I overcome it and infinite if you say wow
yeah I could overcome that now you stop being so scared they say public
speaking on the list of what people fear is higher than death because people are
dreadfully scared of getting in front of a big crowd of people and being judged
and being criticized so people are terrified to do it but what's really the
biggest problem of getting judged and criticized in front of a group of people
when you're speaking about something there's not really that many bad things
that can actually happen but the fear is still that strong because it comes from
tribal times if you were to get criticized or banished from the tribe
that would probably mean death because a human being back in the day would not be
able to survive without other human beings we learn to survive together not
on our own so a lot of people feel that same pain that same evolutionary feeling
of speaking in front of a crowd like if I screw up I could get banished from the
tribe that's the same fear response that they get but it's not real I remember
doing this speech in front of about a hundred people and I bombed it so bad it
was the worst speech that I ever had and I was like I remember my body like
freezing up and it was like one of the worst feelings I ever had but it was one
of the best experiences of my life because I realized nothing happened I
didn't die nothing happened I'm still here and I actually got stronger from
that and I realized that I can do it more and more and more and now the same
with these videos I can get judged I can get
criticized people might not like it some people made some people something some
people will but I'm gonna do it anyways because what's the worst that can happen
I actually care much more about the one person that I'm gonna affect positively
from this video then ninety nine who criticized it right because I just care
more about helping that one person if that is the way I would look at it I
know it's helping more people than that but you kind of understand the idea so
the biggest thing to take away from this is that when you face the fear and you
do it anyways you become stronger that flinch response starts to disappear if
you were to do this to someone and kind of do this in front of the eyes they'll
keep blinking blinking and eventually they stop blinking right so that's the
flinch response but you can see that in every area of your life you're probably
sometimes like sitting at a coffee shop in like oh I should say hi to this
person next to me and you just don't do
it you just flinch and you sit there and
you don't take action but what's the worst that can happen it's never gonna
be as bad as you think it is but you still don't do it and then you start to
become this person in all areas of life that's constantly timid and scared of
everything and then you stop getting anything one of the worst things
children get taught is like don't talk to strangers this is like something that
is constantly like drilled into society don't talk to strangers don't talk to
strangers how else do you think you're gonna build a business is if you don't
start talking to strangers and start talking to people and start to get out
of your comfort zone so if you're gonna take one thing from this video it's to
start to look at all these areas in your life where you are fearful and timid and
one step at a time one day at a time start breaking those things so let's say
tomorrow instead of if you were not gonna say hi to a stranger say hi to
somebody you're in line for coffee say hi it doesn't have to be much but start
taking actions in those directions start doing it it doesn't have to be anything
crazy but just start moving in that direction if you start doing this in
every area of your life you'll be astonished of what happens because
nothing is gonna happen if you just stay in your comfort zone all the magic
happens outside of the comfort zone the reason why most people will never
succeed at a high level is they stay inside of a comfort zone and that
comfort zone ends up being the thing that kills them or keeping them inside
of a prison inside of a prison in reality and a prison of their mind but
as soon as you start stepping outside your comfort zone
you start to realize wow things aren't as bad as I thought and I'm overcoming
these challenges and I'm getting better and I'm becoming stronger and I'm
starting to attract more people into my life and I'm starting to achieve mark
wow this is pretty unbelievable so at the end of the day it's who you
become that gets you what you want it's not what you want that gets what you
want so in terms of the psychology of fear you have to start to realize that
your amygdala this reptilian brain of yours is playing a lot of tricks on you
and you have to start controlling it versus it controlling you and the only
way to do that is start to take action in spite of the fear but start with
small things and build your way up and as you immerse yourself in this new
world in this new reality you will start to realize that you can actually
overcome any challenge you can become unstoppable you can relentlessly go
after your goals and you will actually again be super astonish of where this
comes so guys if you like this video like comment subscribe hit that Bell
