The Real Reason Sbarro Is Disappearing Across The Country - Duration: 4:51.

If it's been a while since you've set foot in a shopping mall food court, it's probably

been a long time since you've eaten at a Sbarro.

What happened to this once-ubiquitous pizza chain?

These are the reasons Sbarros are slowly vanishing nationwide.

The biggest problem Sbarro faces is the changing way in which Americans are doing their shopping.

"Changing consumer tastes are taking a toll on the food court at your local mall."

Sbarro's strategy was intrinsically tied to its shopping mall locations.

But with malls in serious decline across the country, suddenly Sbarro no longer has a captive

audience to sell to.

And when people do go to the mall, there are far more options than there used to be, with

healthy options, locally sourced food, and even craft beer.

Sbarro might be there, somewhere between the Sweetgreen and the Bareburger, but the competition

is a lot stronger than it used to be.

"Sbarro restaurant, or as some of you may know us, that place in the mall food court

that always has the shortest line."

In the 1990s, one of the things that gave Sbarro cachet was the exclusivity of its product.

If you wanted to get down on some greasy pizza, you had to find a pizza place.

"It's like right here is my favorite New York pizza joint, and I'm going to go get me a

New York slice!"

Not any more, though.

Pizza is now available seemingly everywhere, from the frozen food aisle in your grocery

store to the snack bar at your gas station.

And with pizza chains on every street corner, you can even have hot, fresh pizza delivered

to your doorstep simply by picking up your smartphone.

Plus, those other chains have a lot more options than Sbarro does.

Joints like Domino's and Pizza Hut allow patrons to try all sorts of inventive toppings, new

sauces, and offbeat crust choices.

Sbarro just hasn't kept up with the times.

And it's not just their food that's outdated, it's their entire business model.

Sbarro has always sold itself as being ready whenever you are, but that means their food

isn't made to order, it's made in advance, often well in advance.

They are basically trading convenience for quality, and according to restaurant consultant

Michael Whiteman, that just doesn't fly with consumers anymore.

"Sbarro has been stuck with an outdated business model.

Its biggest shortcoming is that it sells food that has been sitting out for a while, and

more people want food made to order."

To their credit, the chain is trying to catch up, as Sbarro has finally begun experimenting

with locations outside of malls that actually offer delivery.

But according to Sbarro chief marketing officer Annie Pritz, it's been a steep learning curve.

"It's a very challenging business.

We had never done delivery or carryout before.

And there's a lot of nuances.

You have to master online ordering.

You have to master customization.

You have to master new products.

And you have to make sure, ultimately, that you are not sacrificing the quality of your

product when you're making those deliveries that are 20 miles or 20 minutes from your

store."

The bottom line for Sbarro, though, is… well, the bottom line.

In 2011, Sbarro declared bankruptcy.

Then they declared bankruptcy again just three years later.

"Sbarro the pizza chain is also filing for chapter 11 for the second time in three years,

closing 155 of 400 company owned stores."

Comedians like Conan O'Brien also had a field day mocking the chain for serving fake Italian

food to "fake Italians."

"a'Sbarro's is going a'bankrupt?

Mama mia, what am I gonna do?

I need'a my meatball!"

Though they eventually emerged from the second bankruptcy in 2014 with a new business plan,

they still carried roughly $165 million in liabilities.

And even the smallest increase in costs can have major ramifications.

In 2014, the cost of mozzarella cheese suddenly spiked by 16 percent, with cheddar cheese

rising by about 25 percent overall.

Given the amount of cheese a pizza chain the size of Sbarro goes through, those types of

unexpected price hikes can be difficult to weather, especially for a chain in the process

of rebuilding itself from scratch.

After emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2014, Sbarro was determined to address

their issues.

Besides experimenting with freestanding restaurant locations, they also went through a branding

overhaul, and begin introducing artisanal ingredients and wood fired ovens.

So far, Sbarro's modernization efforts haven't really paid off.

The company's burgeoning social media presence has only racked up around 300 thousand followers

on Facebook, compared to over 30 million for Pizza Hut and over 20 million for Domino's.

We know what you're thinking: social media?

So what?

"What the f--- does that have to do with pizza?"

"I don't know."

But the lack of engagement online from consumers has also showed at the cash register: In 2016,

the chain still saw a 10.6 percent decline in sales over the previous year, and in 2017

it fell 5.5 percent.

Finally, the biggest issue facing Sbarro is the simple fact that people don't like their

food.

In 2014, a Consumer Reports survey of over 30 thousand customers ranked Sbarro as the

worst fast food chain in America.

No wonder the chain is disappearing.

"Sbarro's pizza.

Started from the bottom, and now still very much at the bottom."

5 Foods You Should Eat For Strong and Shiny Nails - Duration: 4:14.

5 Foods You Should Eat For Strong, Shiny Nails!

Strong, shiny, smooth nails pretty enough to show off without polish and sturdy enough

to pop open a can of seltzer without cracking start in the kitchen.

Your body has to constantly regenerate the cells that make up your nails, and it needs

a healthy supply of certain nutrients to do so,

Make these foods a regular part of your diet, and your nails will have the nutrients they

need to grow thick and strong.

Edamame (for cysteine and folate) The edamame appetizer before sushi is a smart

choice.

Soybeans provide cysteine, an amino acid necessary for the production of the protein keratin,

which is one of your nails' major building blocks, says Libby Mills, a registered dietitian

based in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

What's more, edamame is a good source of folate, needed for the production of new nail

cells.

Make your own salsa by tossing together cooked, shelled edamame; chopped white onion; diced

tomatoes, sweet corn; and lime juice.

Or season steamed edamame with chili powder for a zesty snack.

Eggs (for biotin) Break an egg instead of your nails!

Eggs are one of the best food sources of biotin, a B vitamin that promotes protein production

in the nail matrix, the tissue underlying your nails that generates nail cells.

"Biotin has been shown to increase the thickness of your nails, and it can also prevent them

from becoming brittle," says Mills.

It's best to get your biotin from food, if possible: The high levels in many supplements

can interfere with certain medical tests.

Make scrambled eggs with sliced smoked salmon and chopped broccoli, two other good sources

of biotin.

Cashews (for zinc)!

Zinc, which is abundant in cashews, is needed for cell division and protein synthesis both

very important for your always-growing nails.

And you need it every day, because your body can't store it long-term.

Getting enough in your diet can keep your nails shiny and strong.

But if they're dry or weak, it may be a sign that you're low in zinc.

Soak cashews overnight in the fridge and blend them into a smoothie with banana slices, chopped

dates, and almond milk.

Sweet Potatoes (for vitamin A)!

Something extra sweet about these spuds: Just one provides a whopping 561 percent of your

daily dose of vitamin A, which helps your nail cells reproduce properly.

When you don't get enough vitamin A in your diet, your nails may be brittle and develop

vertical ridges that split and crack, Mix mashed sweet potatoes into hummus for

a spin on the classic dip.

For earthy flavor, add chopped sage; for a sweet taste, add cinnamon and a drizzle of

maple syrup.

Yellow Peppers (for vitamin C) Sorry, oranges yellow bell peppers win when

it comes to vitamin C, which your body needs to produce collagen, a structural protein

in your nails.

Collagen production diminishes as you age, which can result in thinner, weaker nails,

so it's very important to eat foods rich in vitamin C to keep them strong and healthy.

One large yellow pepper provides four times your recommended daily amount of C.

Marinate sliced yellow bell peppers in a mixture of olive oil, red wine vinegar, minced garlic,

and chopped rosemary for 2 hours (keep chilled in the fridge) before grilling.

Ellen Hires Celebrities to Make Cameos in Her Show - Duration: 5:09.

All right.

Before we do anything else, I heard

about a website called Cameo and so it lets you pay celebrities

and they'll record whatever you want.

Have you heard about this?

I figured why am I doing all the work when I can pay

some celebrities help me out.

So with that in mind, here's a short video

to watch while Twitch catches his breath.

And here is a short video to watch while tWitch

catches his breath.

[MUSIC - MILEY CYRUS, "WRECKING BALL"] I came in like

a wrecking ball.

[LAUGHING]

[APPLAUSE]

All right.

Thanks, Tommy Lee.

That was Tommy Lee.

tWitch, now that you've caught your breath

I want to ask you something.

Have you ever gotten a text from a wrong number?

I have, yes.

And what do you say?

I'm just like, I don't think this was meant for me.

Yeah.

And then they say, sorry.

They're sorry.

Yeah, whatever.

It turns out some people respond to wrong numbers which

leads to some interesting conversations.

I'm going to show you some.

It's a new segment called, Wrong Number, Who Dis?

[LAUGHING]

Until we know that it works, we're not giving it any music.

[LAUGHING]

We've decided we're going to test out in segments before we

waste time on music.

[LAUGHING]

If it works, we'll add music later.

We're trying to save money around here.

[LAUGHING]

All right, here's the first one.

Did you smoke some of my weed?

Just wondering.

Sorry, I think you have the wrong number.

Don't know you.

Hey, did you smoke some of my weed?

Wrong number.

My bad.

Got high, forgot I texted you already.

[LAUGHING]

[APPLAUSE]

Here's another one.

My mom wants you to call her.

Who's this?

Andrea.

Wrong number and you got me in an unnecessary 30 minute

conversation with my mother, so thank you for that.

[LAUGHING]

Here's one more.

Dude, are you ready to party?

Who's this?

Oh, sorry.

Wrong number.

Bye.

But I want to party.

[LAUGHING]

If you get a text from a wrong number

you think I should see, please send it to me.

Now, I'm going to need a little help from Cameo

to transition into this next bit.

Take it away.

All right.

So when Ellen's not looking at funny text

messages her viewers sent in, she's

feuding with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Oh, my god.

All right.

That's right, Snooki.

I do have a feud with The Rock.

And I just saw that he has an Under Armor commercial.

He's constantly copying me, everything I do.

So here's his Under Armor commercial.

I knew one thing.

When your back's against the wall,

the only way out is to put the work in.

All right.

And once again, he stole my idea because I already

had an Under Armor commercial.

This is mine from a long time ago.

However you choose to live your life,

just try to enjoy it as much as you can.

Fill yourself with joy, not the dish washing liquid.

[APPLAUSE]

All right.

I needed another transition Cameo.

But before we go on break, there's

one more thing Ellen would like to mention.

Go ahead, Ellen.

OK, Carson.

I do have one more thing I want to mention.

It's time for my segment What's Wrong With These Signs Signs.

(SINGING) Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.

Blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind.

Do this, don't do that.

Can't you read the sign?

Thank you Lance.

That was beautiful.

I appreciate it.

This is from Jennifer in British Columbia.

I saw this on Facebook and I had to send it to you.

Sign not in use.

[LAUGHING]

It seems to be working.

[LAUGHING]

This is from Angela in Mulvane, Kansas.

Saw this and thought of Ellen.

Shoplifters will be prostituted.

[LAUGHING]

Don't threaten me with a good time.

[LAUGHING]

This is from Christine in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

We had dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Florida

and this was their menu.

Wing box, one boob, two boobs, three boobs.

[LAUGHING]

It's like a dirty Dr. Seuss book or something.

[LAUGHING]

Coincidentally, that's the same thing

that's on the menu at The Naked Restaurant in Paris.

[LAUGHING]

If you see a sign you think I should see, please send it

to me.

Now, we're going to go to commercial.

Take it away, Kevin from The Office.

When we come back, Ellen will welcome Debra Messing.

Nice.

In a million years I never thought I'd be a cook.

9/11 happens out of frustration confusion anger I went down the recruiters office.

I qualified to be a navy cook and signed up that day.

While stationed on the USS Benfold I had a conversation with my mother.

She said-Chad you've been an artist your entire life not sure why you can't connect the

dots here. What do you put food on and I said little a white plate and she said

don't you see it's a canvas paint on it with food. I was able to use that later

on in my career even in the Navy and then furthermore getting out of the Navy

into a professional chef position we started winning awards like chef of the

Year by eater opening a restaurant in Mexico and then eventually after winning

more awards going on Top Chef. While on Top Chef I had a restaurant that I was

operating in San Diego we had some struggles I decided to move to my

hometown Spokane Washington and reset and then open this restaurant called

Zona Blanca which is a ceviche bar but looking back through my career it's like

Amazon Marketing Services | Can AMS Ads Help You Sell Books? - Duration: 5:11.

Amazon marketing services. AMS ads. what are they? do you actually need them?

how can they help your book sales and what's the best way to get started for

free that's all coming up in this video

Hey everybody. Emeka, coming at you from the blueprint publishing Academy and today

in the 10 part series on self-publishing for 2019 we're talking all about AMS ads

or Amazon marketing services all right so ads have been a massive massive

difference maker key not only my books but my students but for 2018 are they

gonna be the same for 2019 you betcha so what first up let's back up what are

Amazon ads Amazon marketing services so these are the little sponsored ads that

you can see when you type in and when you're looking for a book or a product

on Amazon you can see some of the books are and have a little sponsored label

Nashville so that's what those are somebody paid to have their book there

to help get their books in front of more people this can be a phenomenal thing

for you as they it helps increase your traffic to your book because more eyes

are gonna be on them do you pay for them of course you pay for them it can be

anywhere from a few pennies you know up do it dollar or so you're able to adjust

it you're able to control it I'm not gonna get into that in this video but I

will give you a resource at the end that allows you to get started with it

completely free do you really need Amazon ads right now I you do with how

self-publishing has changed over the last few years running ads to your book

has almost become essential and it's a great way to break into some of the more

competitive niches like self-help weight-loss

and fitness some of the more competitive niches running AMS is to get your books

targeted in front of specific customers can be a big big leg up for you another

thing that I personally love about AMS ads is you're able to target keywords

and words in general like author's names that you're not allowed to target inside

your books metadata so what this means is say you want to target like a famous

author well you're not allowed to have that info anywhere inside of your book

you're inside of your books metadata that's the information that you place

when you upload your book 1080p but you're allowed to use that keyword in

your AMS odds keyword selection so what can these do for your books well they

can do a couple things one it just will drive more traffic to your book and

you'll see based on number of clicks and sales and impressions on if that adds

profitable or not but there's also something else that's happening to your

book that's not as easy to track and that's the organic traffic that is

coming in because of the actual lab see when you promote your book by an AMS

Amazon's promoting it and people will click on it but what's also happening is

now your book is just starting to get more traffic so people are gonna start

to see it more so they might not even click on the actual ad and they might

just scroll down and then say hey this book appeared again and click on

non ad version of your book and end up buying your book that way so it

increases sales even if the ads not profitable sales can still be going up

based on the extra traffic volume that Amazon is now giving you because of your

ad for your book so what's the best place to get started with these well I'm

gonna link my buddies course Dave chest the Kindle preneur and he is a free AMS

course that you can take and it'll give you everything you need to fully get

started with AMS odds if you're brand new to this phenomenal course I love it

it's what I've been using to get going and then the live you are a bit more

familiar with AMS but you want to really kind of ramp up the things I'm gonna

link the number one AMS pads person on the planet today and that is the a mess

that's profit formula I'll link that down below as well so you have a free

option you have a paid option what's the difference the paid option goes into a

lot more detail and has a lot more strategy but the free option is a great

way just to get started if that's what you need for right now if you got any

question about a mess or self-published publishing or business in general hit me

up in the comments let's connect and make sure you smash the subscribe button

and turn bell notifications on so you get the next video till next time everyone

I'm Emeka, speak to you soon

started these brushes are for our membership program you can try for free

go show it in finder and down below here over and all of the many things that I

actually need to clean out here is by zip file and you can tell because this

you want to use this cool punch say here you can drag it down and boom you've got

a cool punch there so here's the before and here is the after

Have You Given Up On Being Fit and Healthy after 55? Advice from a Septuagenarian Personal Trainer - Duration: 9:53.

it's it's not this 20 year old rah-rah come on you can do a grandma it's here's

here's what you can really do to improve your health and take charge of your

health after 50

thank you so much for tuning into our second act with Paige and Silke today we

return to our expert segment day and our topic of getting fit after 50 and I want

to welcome Julie Luedtke back to our program Julie thanks so much for joining

us again well thank you for having me appreciate it

Julie you know you were on gosh I think last year at this time when we talked

about your book I fallen and I don't want to get up yeah but was the one you

know to introduce Julie if you haven't seen her segment we'll link to our first

one Julie of course isn't author she is also a certified personal trainer with a

specialty in training older adults those of us who are heading deeper into our

second act and that's what we're going to talk about today because you're

coming out with a new book it's a matter of fact a series of books the first of

which is it's healthy after 55 living your best life yes Julie tell us how is

this book different then you know a lot of the books out there targeted to our

demographic most of the books that are out there now even though they're for

somebody who is over 50 they're written by somebody who is in their 20 or 30s

who has 0% body fat and it's just gung ho ... there's very little out there

that's really written by somebody who's gone through all the things that women

over 50 are doing and so for me it was really important to to reach out to the

people I've been there and I've done that I'm 73 so I've gone through all

that stuff and so it was really important for me to reach out to this

audience because we take care of everybody else we don't take care of

ourselves and we forget how to take care of ourselves and it's more than just

diet and exercise it's about balance it's about being social

there's just a lot of different things involved in it and I found that out with

and I was teaching my classes for older adults it's a different world and people

that doesn't mean they don't want to do things we have good 30 years that you

are going to have to be alive you want to be healthy know exactly what you

brought up a lot of good points there one and first and foremost is you know

that most of the books are written by younger adults and you know and God

bless them we were all we were all young well then you're wonderful to look at

but they don't know what we're going through I'm sorry they just don't you

know you really really don't and I for one to have very difficult time taking

advice you know from somebody younger when they you you don't you don't you

don't know what my body is going through so I just let you know so in that sense

I find you just so inspirational because I can talk to you I know you get you

know what what we're going through now I'm approaching my 60s and you know just

the the difference between 55 and 60 yes it's been a big difference oh it really

is and you know I mean your bodies your mind says hey I'm 40 I can do all this

stuff but then your body just laughs at you you know and well yeah maybe not so

much so it really is coordinating your mind body and spirit to kind of get on

the same page and it's not always easy to do and you know and that's another

good point you reference that earlier as well is just you know believing that you

can still live your life to the fullest that you can take charge of your health

and make a difference by taking some small steps you know as women especially

and you referenced this in your book we've taken care of everybody all of our

lives next thing you know we're in our 50s or later and we don't even know how

to take care of ourselves well and you know it's really important to we don't

know how and they've got this beautiful life ahead of you I mean at 50 my gosh

you could live another 30 or 40 years and so how do you want to live it and

really health is your first wealth and by healthy it means you know being

healthy not only physically but mentally emotionally and we forget how to do all

that and there's so many great things you can do after the age of 50 you know

you've got your whole life really ahead of you and just sit in a chair and say

I'm all done no it's not a good thing it's not and and what I need to remember

you know be I mean I've been something that's been fit all my life you know my

issues if you will are really that that change in life that I have to accept

that I need to modify and the you know etc etc then there's a lot of people

that's you you know you've been fit all your life my gosh you run marathons you

still do or half marathon or marathon well you know I mean your your big

inspiration and you know live there done that which is of course one of our

mottos we live what we bring you and that's exactly what you're doing

and Julie and then there's the people that they've never they've never been

fit they they don't really even know what it what it what it's like to feel

good let alone get started you know after fifty on a fitness program how do

you motivate someone to believe that that it's not too late well you know

it's never too late really and it's amazing our bodies are really a miracle

and so it really is all about your why and everybody has a different why why do

I want to be healthy maybe it's because you want to be able

to play with your grandchildren maybe it's because you want to be able to take

a trip and you don't think that you can walk through the airport there's all

kinds of different why's so you have to dig deep find out what your why is for

motivation and you start one step at a time a marathon isn't run like well I

think I'll just go out and do 26 miles no it starts with one step what life is

a marathon and it takes one step at a time sometimes it's two steps forward

and one back but it's getting started and motivating and that's why the why is

so important well and that's one thing that I liked about your book too is that

each chapter really has a very distinct focus on the emotional part of you know

getting fit well and that's just it - there's homework in every chapter so

there's little steps that you can take you shouldn't do the whole book at one

time take a one step at a time it's a progression and as use you go through

the book you'll see that it's a progression and then by the time you get

to the exercise you go okay I've done all the rest of the stuff I can do this too

- well I know your example that you put in the book where you know you reference

a imagine yourself on the floor playing with your grandchild and the door flies

open the wind you know any way the child runs out and you can't get up quick

enough to get the child I don't think about these things because I don't have

little kids around but thinking about that and fun feeling so helpless

by not being able to get up and a lot of people are in that position

I mean it's harder for me to get up now and I'm fit yeah exactly and so you know

really that's one of the big things that I think that is important and that's why

you know I show tips on how to stand up you know you're not gonna jump to your

feet like it did when you were 20 but there are ways that you can do it and

there's way that you can strengthen your legs so that it's not impossible for you

to figure these things out and to do them just one step at a time and I think

that the big thing for me is independence I want to stay independent

I don't want to have to depend on somebody else and I see so many people

that are you know they're they're walking around and they're have a hard

time standing up everything and a lot of that you can't do anything about but

there's a lot that you can and you have to know what you can do something about

and I think you you reference some great examples of people that you know you

like like you said people from your classes who have made some great oh yeah

yeah improvements yeah to wear it you know small improvements are huge if

you're not fit well one a great one is balance we forget about balance but if

you start doing it when we do it in class when we would first start they

couldn't stand on one foot for 10 seconds let alone stand on one foot for

30 seconds and then switch and do the other one

or do it with their eyes closed they were thrilled when they could do that

when you think about that that's 30 seconds but it's your balance your

balance helps keep you upright and it's y'all there's just so many things that

that we did in class and that's really they were the motivation for the book

yeah well and and you know again I I thank you for it for writing the book

and I'm happy to help spread the word on it you you know you're very

inspirational you're you're relatable you understand what we what we go

through and you know it you know again it's it's not this 20 year old come on

you can do grandma it's here's here's what you can really do to improve your

health and take charge of a health after 50 Julie is there anything else you

would like to add before we close out the segment our times almost up no I you

know I think that we've hit everything but just the important thing in the

theme of the book is joy just one yes do it for yourself one yes every

day for yourself be selfish because your health is your first wealth and that's a

way to start yeah I couldn't agree with you more well Julie we will link to you
