- Hey friends,
today I'm gonna be teaching you
a contemporary dance routine,
and this is geared more towards beginners.
So I'm gonna be teaching you every single movement
one by one just like you're in class with me,
and then I'll show you the whole combo
at the end with music.
This way you can practice at home, and learn a dance.
Alright guys so, I know that some of you have been
commenting about wanting the videos
mirrored from behind, but the problem with that
is that filming through the mirror
kind of makes me look a little bit smaller,
so it would actually be harder to see the movement.
So I'll make sure I explain it super clearly
so that you know what's happening.
Alright, so we're gonna start parallel,
and you're gonna start with a rounded back over.
We're gonna come up to our knees,
and then stand all the way up,
your right hand crosses to your left shoulder,
your left hand crosses to your right shoulder,
then you pull them apart,
and you release your right arm out with your palm up.
Let's try that again.
So we go round back,
seven, eight, we go knees,
stand, right, left,
open, extend, and look.
From here, I wrote toss a coin
in my choreography book because
(distant chattering)
before we rudely interrupted,
we are tossing a coin.
So our right arm is extended,
we're looking towards that palm.
We toss the coin, follow the arm
until it frames your face, okay?
And from you framing your face,
you pull up to your chest.
My right hand's on my chest,
my left hand is kind of on my rib and belly button.
Okay, so let's run that back from the tip top.
We're in a flat back, we go knees,
up, that reminded me of like
♪ Head and shoulders ♪
(laughs) okay, alright, and we're back.
We're here, flat back, we go knees, up,
cross to your left, cross to your right,
open, extend, look to your right,
toss your coin, frame your face,
plié, chest, belly button, kinda?
Should we try that with music?
I'm like talking to you like you're gonna answer me (laughs)
let's try that with music.
(lighthearted guitar music) five, six, seven, eight.
Knees, stand, cross, cross,
open, arm, toss,
frame, lay up, good.
'Kay, (snaps) where are we?
Where are we?
Oh, we're here.
'Kay, immediately after you lift,
you step right, and then your left foot's
gonna cross in front when your arms drop, okay?
So we went
step right, cross left.
We're doing a chaîné which you should know people, yeah?
A chaîné, and then you press down with your palms,
a little bit of drama.
Okay, so we're here.
Step right, cross left,
chaîné, push down.
My left foot is up on a nice, steady point,
I'm gonna open across, and open up to the ceiling
with my left arm.
So one more time, we went push,
left arm threads and opens,
and then we push back down with our palms.
Okay, from here you really have to squeeze your booty
'cause you're gonna fall over if you don't.
You squeeze into a nice grand plié, you're gonna push,
and lift to an enveloppé.
Let's rewind, okay?
We went palms, open,
palms, grand plié,
I'm using my left foot to push into the floor, and up,
and my right leg is going straight to a passé.
Straight, to a passé.
My arms are going out,
and out.
Out, and out,
all together is grand plié, out, and out.
You're gonna step in front,
turn over your left shoulder,
and reach your right arm up.
I think I'm gonna show that,
rewind, what do you think, Brae?
- Yeah, it's rewind time!
- Rewind!
Okay, (exhales) I'm out of breath.
Let's go from the top, okay, we're here.
Five, six, seven, eight.
Knees, stand, cross, cross, open, arm,
toss, frame, plié, lift,
right, left,
chaîné, palms,
open, palms,
grand enveloppé,
step, extend.
Whoa, let's try that with music.
(lighthearted guitar music) Five, six, seven, eight.
Knees, up, cross, cross,
open, and toss, frame,
plié, up, step, chaîné,
push, open, push,
grand enveloppé,
step, reach.
Try that a kajillion times.
Okay guys, so you're now facing the back.
You have your right foot as the primary supporting leg,
you're reaching with your right arm.
I'm now gonna tuck my left leg,
from here, you sit onto your left butt cheek,
'kay, you roll to the front,
you roll onto your knees facing the back.
From here, you sit right butt cheek,
right hand, lay all the way down.
That's an easy part (chuckles)
okay, let's try that again.
So you have extension facing the back,
tuck left knee, sit left butt cheek,
roll right-left to the front, sit on your knees
facing the back, right butt cheek,
right hand, lay down.
From here, from here,
you're gonna curl in like you're having a little moment,
a little drama moment to yourself,
you're gonna extend back out,
you're gonna curl back in, I'll show you what I mean.
So you curl in, extend out, curl in,
then you're gonna roll on your back,
the left leg goes up, right leg goes up,
left leg tucks, right leg tucks.
So now you're facing the front, okay?
Let's stand up and try it again.
We are somewhere.
Okay we're here,
tuck in the left butt cheek, roll to the front,
face the back, butt cheek,
right hand, lay back,
in, out,
in, left, right, lay on your left side.
From here, you're just sitting up
by pushing on your right hand,
and you're coming out like this with your,
what are these called?
Your feet. (chuckles)
Your feet flat on the floor.
Now this next part looks kind of complicated
if you haven't done a shoulder roll before,
but it's not that bad.
So, here's what your shoulder roll looks like.
First of all, you're gonna extend straight out
before you roll, and then you're going to roll back,
tuck your knees,
tuck your toes, stand up.
So I'm gonna break that shoulder roll down for you.
I go over my right shoulder, but you can go over
your left shoulder, so whichever way feels better
for you to tuck your neck in, do that way.
You don't have to do right side,
do what feels better for your body.
Again, straight legs,
so the first movement is to roll back.
It's really hard to do slow, so I'm gonna do my best
to teach you.
But you need to roll into the teeny tiniest
little rollie pollie ball you possible can.
Then when you're rolling,
you tuck your chin into your chest,
and your eyes are supposed to look at your belly button.
So think of yourself going from here to here.
But you're rolling over your shoulder.
Just try it a couple times.
If you have mats like those ones,
or just a carpet, or something that's not like cement
(laughs) I recommend practicing on that first.
So remember to just keep it as tight and compact
as possible, and just
send your body backwards, okay?
Let me know how that goes, so we're here.
We push out, we tuck and roll,
I'm landing on my knees first, putting my hands down,
tucking my toes, coming up straight.
Where am I going?
I still have the rest of the dance to teach you.
Okay, we are almost to the end guys.
So we come up, we're beautiful, we roll,
we might be dizzy, it's okay, don't show fear.
We're here, we roll our shoulders forward,
and push our palms down.
Now, I'm gonna softly wave to the left,
wave to the right, and I'm gonna come up here,
and then I do two sinks,
one, two.
Then, I extend my left leg into a big lunge
as my hands kinda pull like a curtain open.
Lunge, come together with other foot, and stand up.
You've made it to the end,
let's try that again.
So we went shoulder roll, stood up,
roll, push, wave left, wave right,
right hand to your chest,
left hand up, two sinks, one, two,
open the curtain, lunge with your left,
right leg comes into your left, and we stand up.
Let's try it from the tip top.
You guys, if there's any parts that you
are kind of having trouble with, go back and rewind them.
This is YouTube, this is 2019, you can do this class
as many times as you want.
But if you're ready, let's go from the tip top with music.
Alright guys, good luck,
