Seashell Wine Bottle Art DIY | Ep.4 Putting It All Together
Let's get started!
Hi, my crafty fam!
I hope you've enjoyed watching my creative process as I make this piece and I hope you've
been following along and making one of your own.
Today we'll be adding the net, the shells and all the bling to finish it off.
Grab your net because that's what we'll l be starting with.
So what I want to do is cover the areas that aren't as pretty with the net and leave
the spots with the sea foam uncovered.
Now, I didn't cover every spot because I want some of the regular color of the bottle
to show as well.
I just covered whatever I thought didn't look good.
I also knew I wanted to wrap it a certain way around the bottle to achieve the look
I was going for.
Before gluing it down permanently, I played around with it to get an idea of where I wanted
it.
Once I was sure of how I wanted it, I started to glue it down.
I placed very small amounts and pressed the net onto it.
I also cut off any excess of the net along the way.
Please be careful not to burn yourself when you do this.
I really shouldn't be doing this with my bare hands.
Please use something like the back of a brush or your scissors as I finally did lol to press
it down.
Continue to do this until you've achieved the look you're going for.
You ever wonder why it takes me so long to make a bottle, look at how picky I am at the
placement of this net and this is nothing, wait until we get to the seashells.
I am very particular and precise in where I place something.
Paying attention to the smallest of detail will play a huge part in how the end piece
will look.
Now for some people, this might take the fun out of it and it might not be for you.
That's fine too, everyone has their own way of crafting.
However, this is acutely fun for me, trying to figure out exactly where I think it would
look amazing and thinking 2 more steps ahead at what I would put on after, is what I enjoy
about crafting.
It's like trying to solve a puzzle that hasn't even been made yet.
I build it in my head as I go and make it come to life.
You know that crafting zone I'm always telling you I'm in… that's what I'm talking
about when I say that.
I completely zone out from the world and the only thing I can see is my piece.
Once you're done gluing down the net it's time to start adding your seashells.
I knew what shell I wanted at the very top of the bottle as I had bought it specifically
for that, so I started with that one.
I had already tinted it with the pearl white metallic paint and highlighted the raised
parts with the gold.
I used E6000 glue for this shell because it's big, I wanted to make sure it never fell off.
I placed glue in any of the parts I thought would touch the bottle.
Once you place it on the bottle, let it completely dry before continuing.
My editor crashed on me while I was editing, yeah that happened, and after it was back
up, I couldn't find the footage for this shell.
What I did was use clear tacky glue and glued strips of the gold beaded chain onto it.
I cut it to size and I laid them on the groves of the shell all the way along it.
For this one, we will be adding these pearls, in different sizes, on top of the shell.
I'll be placing them as if they attached themselves onto the shell.
The way barnacles do on underwater life.
And again, I'm using the E6000 here but I end up switching to the clear tacky glue
that works way better in my opinion, for aesthetic reasons, not the bond.
I add a gold acrylic rhinestone to the center of the blue shell to complete the look.
Now it's time to glue them onto the bottle.
For this, I used my hot glue gun.
Be careful not to use to much hot glue and clean up any excess.
You want your piece to look nice and clean.
From here on out it was a couple of months, yes I said a couple of months, of placing
shells, pearls, beads, rhinestones, glitter, and sand until I finished the bottle.
I didn't work on it 24/7.
I worked on it slowly to make sure that whatever I placed, was exactly what and where I wanted
it.
Now I know I said I enjoy this part of it, where I have to figure thing's out, and
I do, but, if I start to feel frustrated because I get stuck...
I walk away, and not just for a few minutes.
I walk away until I have regained my full positive mental energy to get back at it...
however long that might be.
Sometimes it takes minutes and sometimes it takes days.
What I'm saying is, take your time and enjoy the process and only work on it when you're
in a good state of mind.
If at any point you get stuck or start to get frustrated and feel like you're never
going to get it, walk away at that very moment and come back to it when you're refreshed.
Everyone has different crafting techniques, find what works for you.
Heck, I've seen people throw a bunch of stuff together, throw paint over it, slap
some highlight over that, seal it and it comes out looking absolutely amazing.
You could try that and it might be easier for you.
As long as you're having fun and getting the results you want, whichever technique
and style you use, is beside the point.
Okay, so, you can see how many different ways I've tried to go with one placement.
I wasn't feeling it, so I moved to another spot.
Sometimes that helps as well.
Like right here, I was totally feeling this look.
I was just trying to figure out what shell and color I wanted there.
In the beginning, it's a lot easier to move to another spot as you have your whole piece
to work with but as you add more, it becomes tricky because of the limited space, colors,
and angles you have to work with.
I broke that part of the shell so that it would fit better.
If you have to do this, be careful not to break the whole shell.
It didn't happen with this shell but it did happen to me with others.
...and there you have it, 20 minutes after placing the bead I finally placed the next
shell.
This continues on for day's and months until I finally finished the bottle.
I have so much footage, but I'll spare you the process and skip to each placement from
here on out.
I just wanted to show you that it's not that quick and easy for me either so don't
get down on yourself if you don't get it right away.
I usually cut all that out for viewing purposes only.
I like to decorate as I go, here I added a gold flat back gem and a pearl to fill in
the gap.
I'm still using the hot glue gun at this point but shortly after this is when I start using
the clear tacky glue and alternate between the two types of glues throughout the rest
of the bottle.
I wrapped the gold beads around the gold rhinestone using clear tacky glue.
You want to measure, cut and place it down.
You can use a set of tweezers to make it easier.
I also outlined the other gold gem.
Once I was done, I added smaller pearls around the bigger one as I did with the other gold
seashell.
I used the clear tacky glue for this part.
I dip the back of the paintbrush in the glue to pick up the pearls but I think it's time
I invest in one of those rhinestone picker-upper thigys
This is pretty much the process all the way around with the exception of different shells,
colors, sizes, and placement of everything and I eventually also start adding glitter
and sand.
Once I was done there I let it dry before moving on.
That's perfect but I wanted to add glitter.
I coated the inside with Mod Podge and added the blue glitter.
I did the same thing to the inside of this shell except I did it in gold and instead
of using loose glitter I used 2 layers of glitter glue over the metallic paint.
I used the glitter glue instead of the loose glitter because I didn't like how chunky
the loose gold one looked and the glitter glue has very fine glitter in it.
It was perfect for that top piece.
Here is where I start filling in areas with glitter, rhinestones, and pearls.
I did this so it wouldn't look so disconnected, so bare and at the same time, it added a slight
pop of shine and color that I thought it needed.
I used the hot glue gun here but again, I switched up to the clear tacky glue when doing
this again in different spots.
Here I used a toothpick to get into that tight spot to be able to arrange the pearls.
I only had the white pearls so I decided I would dip several of each size into the blue
paint and let them dry.
I'll be using them throughout the design.
For this part, I made it more complicated than it had to be so here's the easy way
to do it.
Pour some of the clear tacky paint into the seashell, add the sand and press it into the
glue.
Let that completely dry.
Add another drop of the clear tacky glue and place the pearl and let it dry.
Once it's dried, I sealed it with hairspray.
I seal it so the little crumbly bits don't fall and I use hairspray because it works
indoors, dries faster and you can't see it once it's dried.
I also touched up any spots with more sand and added a hint of loose white glitter to
it.
I then added some of the loose glitters to the top and bottom of the shells.
This was one of my favorite parts of the bottle.
And this is probably my least favorite part of the bottle... actually I hate it!
I wish I had put sand there instead.
I use a pair of scissors dedicated specifically to cutting thing's like this because it
will ruin them so if you do this, please don't use your good scissors.
I really just need to go buy some more crafting supplies but the struggle is real ya'll.
I
decided I wanted gold sand for the bottom of the bottle so I took some of the white
sand and painted it with the gold paint as you see here.
I then spread it out onto my silicone mat,
sprinkled some of the white and gold glitters onto it and
let it completely dry.
Once it's completely dry it will be very stiff and in clumps so you'll have to loosen
it up again.
I than added a little more of the white sand for contrast.
…and lastly, I added these clusters of pearls to all the ends of the net to give it that
final touch and once that dried I was FINALLY done!
And here it is all finished!
Whooo, I know I made it however I don't always like what I make but I absolutely love how
this piece came out and I know it's not for everyone, not everyone is going to like
it.
It might be too busy for some but It's exactly what I had envisioned and that's all that
matters!
It's definitely going on my favorite shelf!
Heck, it might just get a spot of its own.
Just remember that when you're creating something, do it the way you want to do it.
That's what makes yours a one of a kind, unique piece.
Not everyone has the same taste and art is subjective.
Whatever you see as beauty may not be beautiful to someone else, hence the saying, beauty
is in the eye of the beholder.
So get creative, let loose and don't be afraid to try anything when you're crafting.
Don't be held down by someone else's techniques, styles or approaches to crafting.
Do whatever feels right to you.
Yes, we can learn and get ideas from each other and yes there are certain techniques
that are pretty much by the book (decoupage) but what I'm saying is that if you find
it easier to do it another way to achieve the results you want or get the same results
or better or even take it to the next level, go for it!
I had an amazing time making this bottle and I hope you found this mini-series helpful
and fun!
I've decided to mix it up and make mini series out of bottles that are more complex and regular
videos with easier ones.
So everyone is happy!
Remember that you can make it with the theme you want, any color you want and use whatever
materials you'd like.
As always, have fun be creative and make a mess!
Thanks for watching!

PUBG Xbox: The Return of WAR MODE - Duration: 4:43.what's good everybody I'm blitz5 and today I have another PUBG video for you
guys because this weekend we have the return of not the Jedi but of the desert
night goddamn I hope you guys enjoyed that little corny joke that I had here
but we do have the return of war mode for pub G on the Xbox one and this is
desert night basically version 2.0 of this so this was kind of unexpected I
did not see this coming I don't think many people in the community expected
this to be coming back to back weekends and in the posterior on the official
forums and on reddit they actually said that for the Xbox version of this they
are considering coming out with two to four versions of each event mode because
they know that there's gonna be a lot of tweaks a lot of changes a lot of things
that they kind of want to adjust and test out and also just kind of promote
the different war modes because of how kind of things have been going recently
I think they kind of want to get back to everybody and do some fun community
events I also think there's probably a lot of pressure because there's so many
games coming out in October and November that they probably want to keep a lot of
hype going on the weekends and by doing these events it will keep a lot of the
players hopefully returning back to pub G and I'll definitely be participating
in these even one called duty and all these other games are out so they've
actually made some interesting changes to the event which I'm excited to test
out this weekend if you missed the first iteration of this event basically what
it is is pub G's version of team deathmatch and it was two groups of 10
so total of 20 players battling out to the first to 150 points or whoever had
the most amount of points in 12 minutes so one of the first changes that I
noticed here is that they creased the amount of time for the game from 12
minutes to 15 minutes and to me this was pretty big because a lot of times the
game was timing out right before we hit 150 points and to me it was kind of a
bummer for the game to end not hitting that 150 point mark and really the game
is a lot slower than the regular version of the game the regular battle royale so
I don't think adding an additional three minutes really makes a big deal here so
I think that's just like a quality of life to the game to the game mode so I'm
excited to do that now play that and then they've also this is the big change
they've changed it from 20 players to 24 players and they've split the squad's
into three instead of two so instead of having 210 man squads now we're going to
have three eight-person squads men and women
included because you can play as both in pub G obviously we're all inclusive here
and so this is gonna be really interesting I don't know how that's
going to play out I think the overall player count increasing to twenty four
is nice hopefully I would like to see this maybe even hit the 30 eventually
because some of the circles felt I'm sure they were all the same size but
some of them felt pretty big and a lot of times if people got the awm or
whatever they were hiding and then the action kind of slowed down and that made
it a lot less fun so I think cramming a little bit more people in there or
making the circle smaller would definitely fix a lot of that and then I
don't know how having another squad in there is going to play out I think
because there's less people on your squad and then just more enemies in
general there's going to be 16 total enemies instead of just 10 that
hopefully this will make it more action-packed and hopefully not too
chaotic with the other squads and kind of trying to squat up maybe this will
make it more squad based because you'll stick with your group of eight and then
there would be the other two groups who knows if this is gonna make it a lot
better but I'm really excited to test it out and also again kudos to pub G for
the quick turnaround on this I mean they really failed here miserably with the
first launch of this they even said they were disappointed in that so I think
that they're trying to like I said say face drop this you know for the next
couple weekends do a couple different iterations of it test it out and I
respect that they're doing that and kind of you know doing something for the
issues that we've been having with pub G and making this available and that also
just kind of housekeeping here everything has remained the same it's a
person squads the weather is on sunrise the red zone is disabled care packages
are to say both friendly fire is disabled no vehicles same thing as last
weekend if you need the information for that I'll post the video I made about
war mode in the description box below so this is really cool came out of nowhere
I was not expecting this and I guess as the time you guys are watching this
video this event is already live so I'm gonna post this video and then start
live streaming so come check it out come hang and as always I'll be
live-streaming every Monday through Friday from around
noon to 5 o'clock around that time that's usually when I
livestream and then I'll be doing some bonus live streams on the weekend we got
a lot of games coming a lot of events and then also I'll be making my weekly
YouTube content right here on YouTube so as always thank you all for watching
humble and peace out the best finish
I don't think oh I could die got a decent amount of kills though we win
seven kills winner winner chicken dinner

What Is The Best BMW M5 Ever Made? My Top 6 M5's - Duration: 13:43.Hey guys. Welcome back, it's Mark with Exotic Car Play Place. Today I'm
gonna share with you the top six BMW M5s. Where it all began but more
specifically we're gonna talk about my favorite m5s in the order that I like
these cars. My favorites. I'm gonna start with the top, my top favorite, and I'm
gonna work my way down the list, and please before you get to the end don't
chew my head off making a comparison to another gentleman, a small youtuber by
the name of Doug Demuro. Maybe you've heard of him, anyway he wrote this great
article a while back about comparing all the every generation of m5, and how he
feels about each one, and where it ranks for him in terms of favorite to least
favorite, and I'm gonna do the same comparison. So let's get started. Number
one my favorite should be a no surprise and it has no bearing on the fact that
because I own the car. I own the car because it's my favorite it's not the
other way around. It's not my favorite because I own the car. I own the e60 m5.
In my opinion it's the best m5 of all time. Now why is that the best m5? Well not
only did it come with a 507 break horsepower v10 engine, coupled to either
a 7-speed SMG single clutch automatic gearbox, or a 6-speed manual gearbox. No
it's not just that it was actually touted as being one of the very best cars at
the time by Jeremy Clarkson, who basically said it was the best thing
next to an F 430 Ferrari, and to be honest I totally see why. Ya on the
street it's a little bit of a lurchy beast, but you know what a lot of cars
are, and at the end of the day, it still has modern looks. Why it makes the top of
the list is because it is sort of where BMW started with the newer generation,
the iDrive system, had the newer upgraded bumper style, but it had supercar level
of performance that you couldn't find anywhere else in the day. It was faster
than its rivals from Lamborghini and Ferrari, so it just did everything well,
particularly on a race track as well. It came equipped as a touring version, so
you could get the e61 which was a touring version
as well, that same s85 engine was utilized in the m6. Now that brings me to
the best engine, that's why this car is the best, in my opinion is the only m5
rated as doing over 205 miles per hour. So it is extremely fast and it is
extremely fun to drive on a racetrack. On the street it's a handful, but on the
track is one of the very best, so it really bridges some of the most modern
technology with some of the sort of the older driving style. It doesn't have the
full electronics that you find in some of the later cars that you find today, so
Doug I know this one is also going to be a controversial for you as well, I know
the e39 was in fact a favorite of a lot of it purists out there, but for me the
e39 didn't rank as number two either. What is in fact number two for me is the
F10. The f10 came with all of a sudden that was the version that came after
the e60. Now the e60 was 2005 to 2010 whereas all of a sudden the f10 came
along and that was from 2011 late 2011 up until 2016 and that was the F10. Well
they have ten now, they changed the drivetrain quite dramatically,
instead of the old f1 derived v10 engine, and actually now BMW changed it, and
utilized more other tried-and-true 4.4 liter twin-turbo v8 engine. Now this car
produced 560 horsepower versus the 507 found in the e60, which made it
substantially faster, it launched harder, it accelerated quicker, but the interior
was updated nicely, the M Drive system was cleaner, the overall interior styling
was nicer, and in my opinion the f10 was the sharpest looking m5 of all
generations to date. As well it really did use two optional gearboxes, one of
course being the dual clutch transmission, which in my opinion is why
it edges out the f9, and the f9 he will talk about in a
moment. The f10 is truly one of my favorites because it uses the harder
shifting, more aggressive racing transmission, that DCT, but you could also
get it with a six-speed manual gearbox. That in fact is why the f10 is so so
luscious to me. You can also tune it because it's turbocharged, it doesn't
take much you put an exhaust on there, you tune the ECU and you have a car that
does ridiculous speeds, really one of the fastest uber sedans on the market, still
today. So my third choice again sorry guys for those that love the e39 that is
not my third choice either. What is my third choice, is of course the f90, which
I've had recent experience with and I have to tell you the f90 takes what the
f10 did, and just makes it more powerful, more technology, you have just your
control, you have some great electronics, the latest in the greatest. You've got
LED headlights the adaptive LED headlights supreme amounts of power.
right very very quick
What is also special about the f90 of course which is the current model is
that it also includes an all-wheel-drive system that you can deactivate if you
want to run that car in rear drive, tire smoking capability, you can disable that
all-wheel drive system, but in fact this car comes with now 600 brake horsepower.
You can turn a two-wheel drive, you can turn it to four-wheel drive for bad road
conditions. It is really truly a super sedan that can hit the Autobahn at
ridiculous speeds but as well you can use it in really less favorable
conditions. Now you ask well if it's so great why is it not better than the f10?
Well my personal reason for why I would pick an f10 over an F90 is the simple
fact that the gearbox now it is a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission that
comes equipped in the F90 but unfortunately there is no optional DCT,
there is no optional manual gearbox, it is strictly a slick shifting automatic
transmission, and for me that takes away a little bit of that flavor. Now I have
to tell you the interior is much sharper, it's a lot nicer than even the f10.
Far better than the e60, but like I said aside from all the electronics and the
technology, the f90 just can't quite edge out the f10 for me. The f10 still is my
favorite modern day car of course the f90 comes with the more or less similarly
equipped 4.4 liter v8 twin turbocharged motor but they've dialed up the boost a
little bit to provide a little bit more power. In fact the standard F90 car now
is equivalent to the F10s competition package car, so they were very, very close
animal again. The big difference is here some of the technology and of course the
gearbox. Now my next favorite is I know this is Doug's top favorite, but this
would be my next favorite, this would be number 4, and that is the e39 m5, which
was produced in 2002-2003. Now this one here features a manual
gearbox coupled to the 4.9 liter v8 normally aspirated a high-revving v8
engine that was loved and adorned by many ,many enthusiasts out there. I truly
have experienced the e39 myself and I love it for everything that it does and
it does it very, very well. It in fact is is really the last of BMWs really kind
of more core bare-bones stripped out basic interior you know not a lot of
nanny, not a lot to assist you with the driving
experience, it also had a great exhaust. Note it had that classic headlights the
classic BMW look which was a beautiful thing. I love it, sincerely the only thing
for me e39 falls a little bit below these other ones is again you know after
driving 500, 560, 600 horsepower cars, yes it's fun, but it's starting to lack a wee
bit in the horsepower game. There as well as some of the electronics if you look
at the dash display, a lot of people like that
Spartan look. For me I find it slightly dated as well as the bumper styling, some
of the exterior styling as well as a little bit on the dated side for me.
Better value would actually come from a 540 with a manual gearbox, half the price
3/4 of the performance, and to be honest that is almost as fun of a car to drive.
So that's why the e39 is my fourth favorite. So my fifth actually
comes the 1980s version of the m5, which is the e28.
Why is the e28 so great for me? Well it is actually the original car with 255
horsepower straight-6 engine. It was quick in its day for sure, it sort of
initiated the whole concept of the m5, the uber, the autobahn beast it really is.
Where this whole game started for BMW by today's standards, sure 255 horsepower is
a little on the weak side, but don't forget in the 1980s what else
did you have around that time. The Porsche 930 which was the epitome of
performance and strong acceleration that car only
marginally more power, it was also in us-spec only had a slight bit more power
it was only two hundred and some-odd horsepower in the 930.
So this car was right on the 930s heels. Now of course it was special because
this engine came straight out of the m1 which was the BMW super car that was
utilized in the racing series, but unfortunately was counted because of the
specifications couldn't meet the criteria, and as such
BMW decided to utilize that engine, they knew they had a great drivetrain, so they
shared that, they dropped it into the e28. So for me with a manual gearbox it all
began with the e28 and for me, that's why that car is special, and why it's not
at the bottom of my list of top M5s. And so my sixth choice of course last
but certainly not least and please don't be offended anybody, the e34 is a great
car, e34 is the 1992 about 1995 model years. Now this car here produced
over 310 horsepower. It in fact was a blistering car in its day, again it was
very, very fast. Again worth comparing it to the Porsche 930, which wasn't really
the same type of car but in fact in terms of numbers and performance it was
very much similar. Now there are some odd styling bits like the wheels and the
interior, of course, is looking very dated by today's standards, but again it marks
that series and that generation of the m5 that carried through is such an
important trademark car and the BMW lineup. This car was very important and
really in fact today finding a nice a e34 is very difficult to do, and the prices
are going up, up, up, like you would expect for any old-school m5. The values are
going up for clean ones, and it's one of these cars that you want to get your
hands on, if you want to collect such a beast, but generally speaking, interior
touches, styling body, styling again in its day was very classic BMW with the
great headlights, the overall styling was consistent with the rest of the models,
and again it was a very attractive car in its day, and
still looks very classy. So that's why that car is still a favorite of mine.
Now of course it made the bottom of the list, you have to rank them, but all m5s
are important in the scheme in the BMW world, and I love them all. I've
experienced every one of these cars and they all bring something great to the
table. Now I get everybody I hope you enjoyed the video, hope Doug's not mad
about this video, but again you know what, hey he's got a great opinion on that, his
opinion maybe not so right when it comes to the e39 being at the top of the heap.
I know a lot of you guys believe that that car is in fact the top. Sorry guys
it's not it's like everything BMW. Generally the newer the model the better
they get. There are some exceptions, of course, to that again I mentioned the f10
versus the f90. So make sure you guys give me a thumbs up, like, don't forget to
share with your friends, and subscribe to the channel. I'd love to see you come
back on the next one, and please hey guys let me know what is your favorite car.
Give me your ranking, why don't you give me your top six. one two three four five
six. I want to hear it in the comment section below
love to hear it. Oh and by the way in case you haven't gotten your exotic car

12 Upcoming PC Hidden Gems You Must Watch Out For - Duration: 18:53.EGX 2018 was a whirlwind of video games, stage-based livestream shenanigans, loud music and free
badges - not bad for our first gig as a video team.
There we were out and about on the show floor, dodging queues for days, playing games that
caught our eye, even interviewing in Matthew's case and chancing upon a copy of Vib Ribbon
in mint condition if you're me.
That said Matthew, Alice the Third and I have compiled a list of our favourite games from
EGX to share with you, our audience, some of whom attended the show to which we say
thank you for your support!
If you haven't already please feel free to subscribe for more videos like this.
It's not too often that we play characters, even in horror games, that make consistently
bad life decisions, much less in a calculating fashion.
So when I started playing Those Who Remain and immediately learned that the fairly unlikeable
main character, Edward, was driving to this dingy motel to cheat on his wife for the umpteenth
time, I was immediately engaged: why cheat?
Who is this mistress, who feels the need to use a false name on hotel sign-ins?
What is Edward's wife like?
Who is Edward?
Just what a supernatural thriller/horror amalgam needs… mystery, arguably this demo's main
strength.
They're all questions you have ponder while dealing with horror.
Similar to Alan Wake, the game is built around light manipulation to fight back the darkness
and progress.
The dark is pretty scary, more so than normal; it contains eerie shadows watching you from
a distance with shining eyes and if you venture too far in you can't make much sense of
your bearings at all.
Unlike Alan Wake, however, you are not so much controlling the light source with a torch
(at least in the beginning) but relying on environmental lights to clear a path.
You find fuses for generators, locate light switches and power up electrical towers so
that light bulbs and lanterns, vehicle fog lights and the like slice out a very clear
path from the darkness.
That means ambient lighting for days.
Your actions in the game also have some bearing on the 'other' world in the game, a separate
reality of sorts that I experienced in the demo for a short time - a strange place with
impeccable sound design that made it feels as though you were on a fast track to drowning.
I mean that as a positive.
If, like me, you like losing yourself in the dark, watch out for Those Who Remain when
it creeps onto PC in 2019.
Portal meets The Stanley Parable meets Firewatch.
That's what The Bradwell Conspiracy looks and feels like.
A puzzle game with a beautiful aesthetic and wonderful sense of humour is just what I've
been waiting for.
This game is based in the South West of England, making it dear to my heart, and also my home,
right next to the Stonehenge.
It's set in 2026, and The Bradwell Initiative is launching its Clean Water Initiative.
Something goes terribly wrong - when does it not - and you end up falling victim to
what looks like an earthquake, waking up among rubble, and with damage to your throat, you're
unable to talk.
The AI system does its best to try and get you out of this situation, but it's not
doing a very good job of it.
Thankfully you come across another survivor, her name is Amber, but you're both trapped
on opposite sides of this huge door.
The only way you can communicate is through a pair of smart glasses - wow, this really
is the future - and by taking pictures to send to Amber for her to guide you through
the facility.
This is where it feels most like Firewatch.
As you get deeper and deeper into the underbelly of the companies building, you start to learn
that something is amiss.
You'll be able to traverse through puzzles using a 3D printing method - super futuristic.
When you first learn how to use the 3D printing gun, you're introduced to the company by
none other than Jonathan Ross.
As a voice actor, of course, not as an actual character.
That'd be ridiculous.
Or would it?
I guess we'll find out when it comes to PC soon.
If you spend an inordinate amount of time in Animal Crossing sending little letters
to the townspeople, have an unhealthy obsession with job-simulators, think Papers, Please
is a masterpiece, or enjoy the simple life and times in a place like Pelican Town in
Stardew Valley then boy, is Willowbrooke Post for you.
That also means it is 100% for me.
In this quirky game you are entrusted a post office owned by your parents and pretty much
take up the mantle whilst they are absent with help from Pete, an old family friend.
That means running a quaint little postal service in a ye olde English style town complete
with letter writing and sending (something other characters respond to apparently in
a way that makes sense to the letter you wrote), build friendships (or not) with the people
of Willowbrooke based on your interactions, and, if you're this way inclined, opening
and reading other folks' mail!
I mean, I personally wouldn't do that, but if you wanted to you could... just a head's
up...
I also spent some time in this demo baking an apple pie in a frankly adorable little
kitchenette, which i could give to the local chef who posted a relevant quest on the post
office board.
Or I could have just it eaten myself because it looked delicious, the same of course could
be said for the environments of this game, which are warm, minecraftian and old fashioned.
Perfect for a game about post, an increasingly antiquated custom I know I miss.
It arrives in early access some time next year - well, as long as the delivery man doesn't
mangle it on the way.
Censorship played a role in two of my favourite games of EGX.
The first was Hypnospace Outlaw, where you police the internet as it was in 1999.
Check out our standalone let's play for more on that.
But this is Obviously Inappropriate Content, where you work in a fictional eastern-bloc
country, censoring an action game that parodies Metal Slug.
I'm not sure how accurately it represents the dark arts of QA, but the job involves
playing through early builds of the game - the wonderfully titled Ural Death Machine - and
taking screenshots of obvious bugs or anything that conflicts with strict government regulations.
From my time with the game I learned that I am too bad at 2D run-and-gun games to ever
get a job testing them and that I am terrible at resisting authority figures.
You see, the more changes you request in the game, the more strain you put on your game
studio - as you'll see in daily emails and social media chats.
The challenge seems to be balancing your role as censor, by finding errors to keep the government
happy, and letting some sneaky things slip through to make life easier for your colleagues.
Personally I think they should just drop the politically charged action game and rip off
Candy Crush.
Very hard to get into trouble with candy crushing.
The demo from EGX is available to download from itch so you can see I'm talking nonsense
by playing it for yourself.
I'll pop the link in the description box.
What can I say about Sticky Cats other than it is just a good ole time?
I guess I could also say: 'man, them cats are sticky', but the game's name kind
of explains that bit.
It's one of those bizarro oddities that could been easily bypassed, had RPS word person
Matt C not stumbled out of the hall, with a wild look in his eyes, mumbling about sticky
cats.
Truth be told when I watched this game of two scrambling cats being played the first
time I had to scramble away myself to escape the hyped-up screams of the children playing
it.
That was of course until we took over.
Having to somehow steal a fish from the bowl and escape out the window with it, our cats
claws sticking into everything from the carpet to the hanging lights and houseplants, is
just too daft to resist.
I couldn't help but laugh and exclaim at the sheer joy of it.
Turns out the kids were right all along.
Why do we even hire boring adults to make these videos.
'Sticking' certainly helps movement, though you can launch into the air as well, but factor
in your opponent and cue the hilarity.
From game to game, your cats even change in size: from rumpy pumpy Tom's to little scrabbly
kittens.
It makes each game feel a little different though not so much as to be unnecessary, which
is nice seeing as the fumbling controls are designed with chaos in mind as it is.
From the bizarrely accurate animations of the scatty cats to the weird names you win
with, Sticky Cats is hilarious.
I predict many drunk parties with this as the center of entertainment.
Humans are pretty good at just chucking trash wherever they please, right?
Pajama Llama highlights this through its on-water city builder, Flotsam.
Your helpful guide is a seagull with a plastic six-pack ring round his neck called Steven
Seagull.
Bad-um-tsh.
Me being the worrier - or should I say warrior - for the planet that I am, this already made
me connect with the game instantly.
It's your task to sail the post-apocalyptic seas and scavenge any debris that you find
floating along the surface over the top of ruined, underwater cities.
Recycle everything you find, and transform all of the flotsam, various bits of rubbish,
and loads of shipwrecks, into new buildings and docks for your city.
Keep your creations safe by steering your town around with your sails, and avoiding
anything that's trying to eat you or sink your town to the bottom of the sea.
Make sure your townspeople have fresh water, lots of food, and enough scrap to keep themselves
afloat.
Ha-ha.
Geddit?
A...float…?
Because… water…?
Nevermind.
For a game that's set after the whole world collapses, one can only assume due to human
error and not recycling, it's a real feel-good, colourful, and fun game to play.
At the very least, We'll get to find out what it feels like to be Kevin Costner in
Waterworld.
Hopefully without the wee drinking.
I can see myself sinking many hours into this game once it SETS SAIL next year.
Eh, yeah?
That one was good, right?
Give me that one at least.
My next pick is Kine, a game where you navigate a blocky city with a set of musical instruments.
On paper, a trombone or accordion may not sound like a great choice for explorer.
There's a reason Lara Croft hasn't got legs made from brass tubing.
But a few minutes with the demo reveals them to be remarkably able heroes.
They mainly roll, but are able to extend and contort - as instruments do - to reach across
gaps or vault to new areas.
Each character has a different movement pattern and is exploring parts of the world designed
for them, but the really clever bit is where their paths intersect and they team up to
push or carry each other to safety.
At any point in the game you can pause your progress with one instrument and zoom out
to the world map to dive back in and tackle another part of the route.
It really feels like you're chipping away at one massive puzzle, rather than just solving
a chain of self contained obstacle courses.
And, of course, it has a killer soundtrack that gradually layers up as different musical
devices come into play.
If you were into the rolling conundrums of Stephen's Sausage Roll then you'll enjoy
this - it's like that game, only with pianos instead of a meat tubes.
I know which I'd rather listen to.
No firm release date yet, but we'll be keeping an eye on this one.
The Snap Hunt has a lot going for it: I'm talking beautiful Firewatch-like visuals,
dynamic music and an intriguing premise all wrapped up into a cat and mouse chase with
the mysterious Wendigo: a mythological monster of Algonquian folklore.
Put together in a mere ten weeks it's a competent piece of terror gaming.
On first glance, and going in without a clue, you wouldn't expect anything too weird to
happen - of course I've ruined that for you now but I have to recommend it and something
tells me: 'you take pictures of mauled tents' isn't enough to give you an accurate idea.
So spoilers?
In The Snap Hunt you walk around a lovingly realized woodland setting with a camera and
search about for clues before taking snaps, which are ranked - you are one of those strange
folks who jump into a campervan and travel to the Rockies for a weekend on the hunt for
bigfoot.
This idea of an encounter is actually what drives this game, rather interestingly - walking
about and collecting photos of odd things that catch your eye is gently engaging but
builds this buzz of hope for a Wendigo-shaped shadow for your film roll.
That is until it actually happens.
Fog and reactive music (that creeped me out quite a bit) are telltale signs you are in
danger but you may not actually see the Wendigo… and you start to wonder if those items of
clothing or the weird symbols made from antlers weren't actually traps to bait you in.
At which point you feel like the character in a horror film that decides to go back to
the car with catchphrases like 'maybe this wasn't such a good idea' and 'it's
not funny anymore!'
If you feel a warm buzz of nostalgia from such tropes, then keep an eye out on The Snap
Hunt.
The thing that drew me to Meridian Line was the fact it's set in the London Underground,
and I have a massive love/hate relationship with those subterranean trains.
Oh, and the developer's business card was a train ticket, that they actually punch a
hole into when they give you it.
It looks pretty creepy and I was trying to avoid shrieking too much on the EGX show floor,
but I survived long enough to get a feel for it.
You play as a girl called Alice - I'm already sold - as she looks for her urban explorer
brother who has vanished in the train tunnels.
It's a first-person thriller game where you navigate the underground - at night, no
less, hooray, my favourite - where you solve puzzles to piece together what really happened
to your brother.
It was in the super early stages when I played it at EGX, but the b-roll they sent over,
what you can see here, has a lot more to it.
Your brother is looking for an undocumented ghost station called Sanctuary, an obsession
that may have taken him to bad places.
You have to pick locks, travel around the tunnel network, use black light to find messages
from other explorers, and use many other skills to reach abandoned stations.
In case this sounds bit too easy, there are also odd figures in the shadows that feel
like they're watching you.
I'm not sure what is worse: shadow beasts or people who leave their evening paper strewn
over the spare seats.
Either way, I'm intrigued to play more...
PHOGS – the game that turns two-headed science experiments gone wrong into an adorable, not
to mention challenging, co-op experience.
The aim of the game is navigate lovely levels as this super stringy sausage dog with two
heads - one head for each thumbstick on a controller - whilst feeding giant snakes with
apples, watering enormous funghi through a fire hydrant, or swinging across hills on
rings.
You can thankfully grab onto items, making proceedings much simpler than just wrapping
your body around a thing and drag until you can drag no more.
Though that works too.
It's a co-op game that is fun first…
second and third.
It's gorgeously realised with bright colours and squishy things you want to roll in like
huge mattresses and pillows.
But it also stands on the right side of mechanical complexity in that it is actually very simple,
in theory.
It's in the execution that the real fun begins.
Think: Octodad or QWOP.
Although in QWOP I'm fairly sure I wanted to hurl my keyboard at the screen rather than
laugh my way through a challenge.
Another thing I like about this game, is that you don't even really need a second controller,
just have each person control a stick and relevant trigger buttons, it is just as fun…
in fact more so because of the limitations it presents.
I love a good on the couch co-op experience and the sillier the better.
I also thought it a good idea to balance out the feline fumblecore of Sticky Cats with
the canine fumblecore because the RPS YouTube channel caters to both cat lovers AND dog
lovers.
Originally designed for a Game Jam with the theme of waves, Wavey The Rocket tethers its
hero to a sine wave and has you steer him past danger by controlling the amplitude and
wavelength of the curve.
Increase the amplitude and you can swoop over or under obstacles, while stretching the wavelength
sees him zip along even faster - good when you're racing against the clock for leaderboard
domination.
It reminded me a bit of the Bit.Trip Runner series in the way it pushes ever onwards,
though there's also much more room here for experimental play and daring score chasing
tactics.
It's a real head-messing experience at first, as you try to line up the curve on the right
hand side of the screen, forgetting that Wavey is still travelling along it on the left,
causing him to crash into endless obstacles.
But at a point it clicks and you begin to to place the curve so you can swoop through
enticing lines of collectibles.
I'm a big fan of games that allow for graceful play - that is, games where the reward of
high skill play is that it looks amazing to watch, as if the player was seeing through
the code like Neo in the Matrix.
I was nowhere near hitting that kind of slickness in my demo, but I can easily people repeatedly
playing the stages to turn their runs into one balletic maneuver.
Kinoko is exactly the kind of thing you want to find at a bustling consumer show.
In amongst that light haze of dry ice and the sticky heat of bustling crowds, this is
a game so relaxing you can happily lose yourself in it.
I know I did.
Inspired by games such as Flower and Journey and Awith a touch of unspoken context that
has become synonymous with the games of Fumito Ueda, this world is one you take at your own
leisure.
It's designed to be enjoyed without needless exposition or meddling.
You play as this thing, which reminds me of a more charming, mage-like, genderless Jack
Pumpkinhead, who brings spring back to a series of beautifully imagined islands blanketed
in snow.
And as a few adorable little forest sprites tell you (all voiced by the team of students
who made the game, believe it or not) or rather babble and motion via a series of animated
drawings, you can interact with certain objects in the environment: a pile of snow, a mound
of dirt or a tree.
And as you clear the snow and ice island-by-island, more work is required.
The joy of this game is in small discoveries; finding an underground cave with glowing mushrooms
and a little bay filled with giant purple flowers, I frankly forgot I was perched on
an awkward little stool with people uncomfortably peering over my shoulder as I played.
You can zoom out into an overhead view of the map but from what i could tell it didn't
point you in the direction of every snow-clearing activity, so that leisurely stroll remains
relatively uninterrupted.
Kinoko is the work of a student team, and I'd be very interested to see where they
take it from here.

DESTINATION EUROVISION 2019 : 20 ARTISTS I WANT TO SEE COMPETING - Duration: 7:12.Go, go on, live, go on, go my friend
Don't forget to smile on the way
Go, go on, live, go on, go my friend
And fate might well change its mind
Hey, there's nothing that can stop you
Go for it, if you fall it happens
Hey, there's nothing that can stop you
Adjusts, calculates, evaluates, manages risk
Come here, I invite you
to get out to see the reefs under the cliff
We won't save the world tonight
I'm not going to lie to you
But I dream of better days
I am poor but rich
of love on the inside
Unity
Express your willingness
Unity
Unity
Make sure everything change
Unity
It goes by in two seconds
It's elusive
We only build sand castles
But as soon as there's the two of us
It's irreplaceable
We can live happily ever after
In our sand castles
We can live happily ever after
In our sand castles...
Like a shadow that follows me
Are you there my strange friend ?
I'm looking for you
I'm running away from you
Forever at your mercy
I'm dragging this life with the wind
And I lose my temper
I run, yes, I fly
I don't care about the praise
I dwell on times past
Suddenly, I don't need my buddies anymore
School notebooks either
I've cracked the codes
And I like this life which is only wind
but which carries me away
Your boyfriend
Your boyfriend
Your boyfriend
Don't promise the moon
Without raising your head up to the sky
I pour out my pen
That writes of nothing but cries of pain
I laugh at my life
The memories come back
Forgive my appearance if it seems superficial
Don't promise the moon
Without raising your head up to the sky
1, 2, 3, where will we go ?
No matter where, only the two of us
We're driving the winds away by leaps and bounds
We'll see about tomorrow
1, 2, 3, spin the wheel
Chance sometimes in your sights
We take it, this moment
Pressure surge like a first day of school
I'd like to learn what we don't learn in school
How to grow up if I don't understand the codes ?
I'd like to learn what we don't learn in school
Not easy to be a child
But it's even worse to be a child who grows up
Bad parents
I promise
I'm not really feeling well
So, he's wasted, he smokes
(Forever unsatisfied)
In the mist
(Yes, it's a disease)
So, he's wasted, he smokes
(Forever unsatisfied)
In the mist
(Yes, it's a disease)
A bit of sun in the cold water
My whole body twists
I'm only waiting for you, Luna
Only you, Luna
And if suddenly tomorrow the hatred becomes old-fashioned
The world anthem would be a modern Bob Marley's song
Traveling the world with a message of peace
It's up to you to convey the message, to heal the wound from our sorrows
When the world is asleep
I dance, dance, dance
When my heart awakes
I dance, dance, dance
When the world is asleep
I dance, dance, dance
When my heart awakes
I dance, dance, dance
Before life goes by
Before life goes by
Before life goes by
Before life goes by
Come on, smile, it's your sleight of hand

Can this device help you sleep better? Philips SmartSleep | DHRME #59 - Duration: 7:43.all right so we're at IFA 2018 and obviously Philips has introduced a few
products - can you tell us a little bit about what .. well let me start by asking
you a question; so how many hours of sleep do you need at night? I would say
about eight hours. like to feel refreshed? to feel refreshed - I didn't sleep that much
last night I don't feel so refreshed. and you need eight hours? eight to nine.
yeah, eight to nine. now how many hours do you get usually? if my son cooperates
nine, eight to nine. you will get eight to nine. do you ever have days that you
don't get that? yeah. okay, and what about you, how many do you usually get? the seven to eight.
so about an hour less? yeah. so that's pretty typical story I mean I think most
of us know what we need and we often get less and we tired to try to catch up on
the weekends you actually can catch up on the weekends but we have a product
that we came out with that's designed for people in the twenty five to fifty
year old range who are not getting what they know they need to feel refreshed.
yeah, so it might work for both of you guys. so this is smart sleep this is a
headband that you wear to help improve the quality of your sleep, it's really
got three components that I'd like to show you. so this is an EEG sensor it
senses brainwaves you can tell you what stage of sleep you're in. this is the power
unit, okay and it stores some of the data and then you've got headphones in
here. it's all in the very soft casing. I'll show you what it looks like when
you wear it, this although also by the way is also for EEG for a reference
point when you have that reference point for that EEG you can really detect
brainwaves and you put that on the what they call the mastoid like
right behind your ear. so just goes on like this
this clips on to the sensor right behind your ear yeah this the headphones go
over your ears. you can feel them they're soft and then the
EEG sensor goes right here, press the button, turns on. that's it. and
it's comfortable to sleep. yeah I mean like anything it takes a little
getting used to - yeah but it's totally comfortable after a couple
of days. yeah and how long does it go with battery?
you charge it every morning, yeah and when you plug it in and charge it you
can sync it with the app and get your data immediately. and there are multiple
stages of sleep that you go through naturally when you sleep we can break it
into three stages to make it simple there's REM sleep which is mostly a
second half of the night that's dreaming and then there are two kinds of non REM
sleep there's light stages 1 & 2 that happens throughout tonight and
then there's deep or slow-wave sleep stages 3 & 4 that happens mostly in the
first half of the night. ok so we now over the past decade or two have learned
in sleep that slow-wave sleep is critical to feeling refreshed during the
day it's critical to cognitive functioning it's critical to mood so
when I wake when I don't get enough sleep I'm irritable I don't know about
you and 2 what we call executive functions these higher order cognitive
functions including the ability to inhibit like a response to a
stressful situation some of that irritability so what we do is we detect
when you naturally go into slow-wave sleep yeah and we deliver natural
tones in your ear okay one twentieth of a second you won't even hear them but
those tones help synchronize your slow-wave and boost the amplitude of
that wave so you get a higher wave you get more slow wave sleep and if you're
sleeping less but you get more slow wave sleep you'll wake up feeling better. so it's
quality not quantity? exactly I could have said it that easily.
and if I may ask like have you tested this and has it been
statistically significant? yeah so this first of all is based the concept is
based on several years of research that has been done
not by us but by other academicians I'm an academic researcher too but I haven't done
those studies and it's been published in top-tier journals so we know this is
really sound science we've also tested it with our product and we absolutely
see a boost in slow-wave sleep yeah and we've started we have launched this in a
very limited launch in the United States they're about 500 out there and we see I
think it's like 96% of the people say they wake up you know they give it more
than four stars and on you know other ratings and 70% say they wake up feeling
more refreshed. now this is a little bit of an issue because you have to
compare it to when you're gonna get if say I get six hours yeah and I use it I
might not wake up feeling like I got 9 yeah but I wake up better than I felt if
I got 6 without it without it ok yeah and I use it myself. so this product is
essentially for people to help improve the quality of sleep - absolutely to help you be
more ready for the day are there also other sleep disorders that you're
treating with this or do you have other products like for sleep apnea? yes we have a whole
series of products for sleep apnea, yeah and we've been you know we've been in
that business, very big in that business for nearly 40
years. so we are one of the market leaders in treating sleep apnea and I
personally have brought a lot of the psychology around engagement to that
product which has improved adherence to that product. this is designed for the
people who are by choice restricting their sleep and we're building other
products to help with other sleep disorders because there are a whole lot
of them. and all this is connected also with an app I'm assuming so you could get
insight into your sleeping patterns. it's a great it's a great point because you
know the other thing we don't want people to do the best treatment for not
getting enough sleep it's just to get more sleep, right. so in
this app we help coach you to getting that better sleep through extending your
sleep time and through getting better quality sleep.
and are you seeing any kind of use cases for it to be connected with other
Philips products like Philips Hue for example and those kinds of products? yeah
so we you know we're seeing potential to be connected to things like our wake up
light, to be connected to other products like that and as we come out with other
products we're absolutely going to be thinking about every user experience, you
know, if you have two sleep products from Philips in your house and it makes sense
to connect them we're gonna be on top of that. and what are we looking at in terms
of retail pricing and this is 399 right now it's a limited launch in the United
States but we're ramping up like I said we have about 500 out there. I think you
know pretty soon we'll have up to 2,000 out there so we're getting ramped up and
it's gonna be in the fourth quarter it's gonna be launched in a limited launch in
DACH. may I ask why is it a limited launch? you know I think this is
the first time we're in this part of the like the more the consumer sleep
business we wanna make sure we do it the right way and we're using we're getting
ambassadors for our products so that we have good relationships with those
ambassadors and we iterate on the product to make it best for the user. so
thanks Mark for your tips and I guess we'll sleep on it. all right you've been
awake and we've been DHRME

Love In Action In The Family - Love In Action Chapter 21 - Duration: 2:53.One of the easiest and most challenging places to offer love in action is in our
family and friendships. We have the opportunity to put the needs of people
close to us ahead of our own less important desires.
I'm distinguishing doing between what people really need as opposed to what we
might want, but not truly need. Sometimes these opportunities come up in
unexpected ways, I had a friend who had a couple of daughters, and my friend was a
very dedicated parent. She made a point of whenever her children would come to
her to interact with them, she just dropped whatever else she was doing and
gave them her full attention. One day when her younger daughter was about 18,
my friend was so happy when her daughter said, "You know mom, there's never been a
time that I wanted to be with you that you weren't there for me, that's so
important for parents and children because the time we have together is
limited, often the children grow up and move away, sometimes they stay in the
same area, the relationship changes though. So the parents I encourage you to
cherish your children while they're close and while you can.
Of course, parents themselves are awful children of their own parents, the family
networks includes siblings and more distant relations. There's a lot of
opportunity for friction and anger in those situations. It can be very very
difficult, I know from my own experience. I think it's important to use the tools
in love and action and elsewhere to do the best we can to maintain loving,
supportive relationships. Not withstanding standing the friction that sometimes
happens in families, not withstanding the dysfunction and the provocations we
can love, love, love, do our best to support, not accept abuse or aggression,
trust, and love.

Top 10 Urban Fantasy Tropes - Duration: 8:55.Urban fantasy is legendary for its tropes.
Contrary to popular belief, tropes aren't a bad thing.
When you understand them, they can be your superpower.
In this video, I'm counting down the top 10 most common tropes in urban fantasy.
If you're wanting to break into the genre or if you just want a quick tour of one of
the hottest selling fantasy genres right now, this video's for you.
What's up, guys?
My name is Michael La Ronn with Author Level Up, helping you write better and faster.
I write urban fantasy and have published 6 books in the genre so far.
This video is especially fun for me.
I create these writing videos because I believe that each of you has Stephen King level talent,

And in this writing video, we're talking about urban fantasy tropes.
If you aren't familiar with urban fantasy, it's defined as magic and magical creatures
in a contemporary urban setting, compared to epic fantasy like Lord of the Rings or
Game of Thrones, which usually takes places in a society not as advanced as ours.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, American Gods by Neil Gaiman,
the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, and even the animated series Gargoyles are
prominent examples of urban fantasy in pop culture.
I like urban fantasy because it's the perfect blend of fantasy and reality.
Now, before we move forward, let me disclaim that tropes aren't magic bullets.
Just because you use a trope in your writing doesn't mean it will work.
Alternatively, if you avoid all of the tropes in this video, you're also likely to alienate
readers.
Tropes are really nothing more than reader expectations.
You can affirm or subvert those expectations.
The true power in being a writer is controlling reader expectations and managing those expectations
in an artistic way.
Watch my video on tropes for more information.
Trope #1 is that magic is usually hidden.
Vampires and werewolves walk among the unsuspecting.
Wizards live among Muggles, and with some notable exceptions, magic is usually a secret
available to the hidden few.
But when night falls...the supernatural side of the city comes to life, which brings me
to Trope #2, which is that magic usually takes place in the seedy underbelly of the city.
Vampires are the best example of this, and by their definition, are the seedy underbelly
of any story they inhabit.
Demons generally don't live out in the open since they thrive in the shadows.
This seedy underbelly trope often lends the dark and gritty tone that urban fantasy is
known for.
Trope #3 is culture clash, because the the seedy underbelly and the city mix in interesting
ways.
For example, this is why you have elves playing in rock bands like in Emma Bull's War for
the Oaks, wizards like Harry Dresden doing detective work, ancient Gods working as prostitutes,
taxi drivers, and shady businessmen like in American Gods, and most recently, orcs as
police officers like in the Netflix movie Bright.
Often, there's little explanation for this and it's just an accepted fact in the story
world that mythical creatures live and work there.
So we've talked about the setting, which is important, but I should stop and say that
there are perfectly good deviations from the cityscape trope.
You can see urban fantasy set in New York, Chicago, a fictional metropolis, or in rural
settings.
One of the most notable examples I've read is The Dark Magic Enforcer Series by Al K.
Line, which takes place in Cardiff, England, and is a welcome departure from the huge city
trope that's so common in the genre.
Anyway, now that we've painted a map of WHERE urban fantasy takes place, let's talk
about the characters that inhabit it.
Trope #4 is mythical creatures.
Werewolves, vampires, Gods, shamans, demons, angels, dragons, shifters, you name it—no
urban fantasy is complete without a robust bestiary.
The main character, villain, and supporting characters are usually a kind of mythical
creature, but not always.
The next trope, trope #5 ties into the mythical creature trope, and that's vampires and
werewolves.
Not every story has them, and you don't have to include them in your story.
But if you're going to write them, you have to be a little careful because they're overdone.
But readers do love their vampires and werewolves.
Trope #6 is there's usually a unique twist on the mythical creatures.
Maybe the vampires have learned how to walk in the daylight, or maybe, like in the Mercy
Thompson series, the main character is a shifter coyote living among wolves.
Every author does something a little different to make their mark on the genre, and it's
ultimately one of the major things that readers judge a series by.
Okay, so we've talked about the world and the characters that inhabit the world.
Let's talk about the MAIN character.
Contrary to popular belief, urban fantasy is not all badass female protagonists.
There's a growing trend of "tough guy" urban fantasy, with badass male protagonists.
Trope #7 is that regardless of whether your hero is male or female, they usually have
a unique profession or skill that's central to the story.
Mercy Thompson is an auto mechanic.
In Annie Bellet's The Twenty-Sided Sorceress Series, the heroine owns a board game shop.
Harry Potter is a wizard in training.
For a shameless plug, my heroine in my Magic Trackers series is a dream mage who jumps
into people's dreams and offers unique interpretations to help them solve their problems.
Whatever their profession, the hero is usually at home with their real-world job and is pretty
good at it.
Trope #8 is totally optional and perhaps the only one that frequently ventures into cliche
territory, and that's that the hero has a special or hidden power and lives in hiding,
even from the supernatural community.
If others find out about their power, they will kill or harm the hero.
Personally, I see a lot of this and as a reader, I prefer something a little more original.
It's similar to the "chosen one" trope and I dislike that trope for the same reason.
But it's a thing and readers won't be too upset if you do it, as long as you execute.
For a great example of this by an indie author, check out The Dragon's Gift series by Linsey
Hall.
The main heroine is a conjurer who has to hide her skills from the world for fear of
being killed if she reveals them.
Trope #9 is the most common of all the tropes, and that's the first person point of view.
It's hard to separate urban fantasy from the first person, and I honestly think that
this POV has become so common that if there was one trope I WOULDN'T break, it would
be this one.
Readers have come to expect it.
And with first-person POVs comes usually a heavy dose of sarcasm or cynicism, but those
are optional because they're overdone.
It's refreshing to read a hero or heroine that's NOT overly sarcastic, honestly.
Trope #11 is love.
Love is optional in urban fantasy, but it's common to see a love interest who occupies
the hero's heart.
The key is to make sure that the love isn't the focus of the story; otherwise, your story
is paranormal romance, which is another league entirely though it's similar to urban fantasy.
The key to remember is that with urban fantasy, conflict comes first and love comes second,
and in paranormal romance, it's the other way around.
I'd love to hear from you guys.
Do you write or read urban fantasy?
If so, tell me your favorite trope that you like to see and your least favorite trope.
Let's learn from each other.
I'll start: my favorite trope in this genre is mythical creatures living and working in
society.
When done well, it's sophisticated and thought-provoking, like in American Gods.
My least favorite trope in the genre is that vampires always have to be Eastern European
or have thick accents.
I know, I know—Dracula—but come on.
It gets old.
I'm eager to hear your guys' comments!
If you're interested in reading some good urban fantasy, I've put together a shortlist
of my favorite titles that define urban fantasy for me personally.
Check it out in the video description.
