Luna, come on!
Looks like she doesn't want to come
You might remember from my last video this last Sunday
that I promised you a video from the field today
I really tried, I went out yesterday
it was a very, very cold, wet, dark and overall ugly day
I went to a beautiful location
I was hoping to make some good images
but I just wasn't feeling it
so I decided to save that location for a better time
with better conditions, and you show that beautiful location properly
I headed back home, I'm trying again today, Wednesday
it's been raining the whole day
I still decided to get out, because sometimes that's all we need, to get out
I just wanted to press the shutter a few times even if the images are not good
I decided to come here, it's a short hike, half a mile if that
but it's very, very steep
it goes to the top of this hill. There are trees on the top so there are no panoramic big vistas
it's starting to rain again, it hopefully helps creating some atmosphere
maybe some clouds or fog or something
that's what I'm hoping for but yeah, we will see
I made it to the top, as you can see it's not much of a top
there are no big vistas or anything, there's a little view here
but now it's not very visible because of the rain
the rain has picked up a little bit now
I'm heading down now, and I'm heading down with no images
I took a couple shots that I might shown you, but they are not good
I'm aware of that
but yeah, it is what it is
I just wanted to talk about something really quick
why I believe that if you are a photographer of any kind
landscape photographer, street photographer, fashion photographer
it doesn't really matter
at any level, professional, beginner, whatever
why I believe that you should be documenting your work
why I believe that you should be sharing the behind the scenes of your work
and why it's really important, not only for other people but also for you and your photography
that could be a YouTube channel where you record yourself
it could be a blog where you share photos of your setup, how you compose an image
it could a podcast, it could be Instagram stories, it could be anything
I believe it's very important for the community because I think there's no better way to learn
than seeing another photographer working on the field
you don't need to talk, you don't need to explain much
it's almost pretty obvious what you are doing
but just seeing someone working the scene, setting up the camera
and shooting and everything, that helps so much to someone who is still starting out
and to veterans who might learn something new
documenting your work and showing what you are doing to others
can also inspire a lot of people
I can't tell you how much I appreciate when someone sends me an email or a message
saying that they've been inspired by my videos or photography
that makes me really happy, it's what all this is about
some other people have inspired me in the past
I hope to do the same with other people
and I hope that those people do the same with someone else
because that's what it's all about, getting out there, making some images and creating something
I believe that people are happier when they create something
and that brings us to you, the photographer
what do you get from documenting your work?
well, you are still creating something, look at me, I'm here
in the middle of nowhere, I'm wet, my camera is slightly wet
I didn't make a single image that I like
but I'm still creating something. Granted, it's a video, not photography
but I still have to use my creative part of the brain
and I believe that keeps your brain creative and that helps in the long term
I believe that since I've started creating these videos
my photography has improved and that's one of the reasons
another reason why I believe that documenting your work can greatly help your photography
is because you and your work are going to get exposed to other people and other photographers
that is going to bring some criticism
some of it is good, it's good feedback
just have to ignore the trolls
everything else is very good and it's going to help you a lot
also getting exposed to other people is going to bring a lot of knowledgeable people out there
who are going to give you advice, suggestions and tips about how to improve every part of the process that you are exposing
I can't begin to tell you how much I've learned, just from the comments in this YouTube channel
from people who are very knowledgeable
when I started shooting film a couple of years ago, I had no idea what I was doing
and I learned a lot from those comments
and that still happens today
take for example my last video where I was trying to print some prints in the darkroom
using my phone, check it out here if you haven't watched it
I got a lot of suggestions, and tips and advice
from a lot of people, and that's awesome and something you can't get
that's something you don't get if you keep your work to yourself
if you don't expose yourself and your work
and the last reason is that it helps promoting your work
we all know how hard it is to stand out nowadays
there are amazing photographers creating amazing images out there
and even though it's totally possible to get noticed and be seen by other people
just by creating amazing images that no one has done before
it is really, really hard
I do believe that we have a much better chance at getting noticed, and at being seen by other people
if we create and put content out there that helps others
inspires others, and that other photographers find educational
and eventually, they will notice our own work, they will see our own images
I believe that's the way, helping others and getting noticed in the process
I can't encourage you enough to start documenting your work and start sharing it with everyone
create a YouTube channel, create a blog, or create an Instagram account
and start sharing there with everyone the way you work
the cameras you use, the way you use them and why
and all that kind of stuff
if you aren't already, of course
what I'm going to do, not in the next video because I'll talk about the Mobile Darkroom
but in the next one
I'm going to show you how I record these videos
the gear that I use to record these videos
and hopefully show you that it can be very simple
you can make it as complicated as you want
but it doesn't have to be complicated, you can record just with your phone or gopro
and start sharing your work and how you work
and what I'd love you guys to do
if you already have a YouTube channel, a blog, or whatever
where you show the way you work, where you document the way you work
please share it with me in the comments, or via social media, or email
whatever it's easier for you
because I'd love to check it out and I'd love to share it here with everyone
looks like we are going to have a beautiful sunset, after all
this is all for today, thank you so much for watching again and see you in the next one
