I'm Louisa and this is my sign name
I wanted to talk about
Specifically for freshman
But really all students
Who are now struggling in school
Or in college
Maybe you're a high school senior
And you're graduating soon
And you're asking yourself what you should do
Psychology?
Maybe you're thinking about a lot of different majors to do
If so, this video is for you! :)
Reasons why you shouldn't become a psychology major:
Maybe you're thinking that's a funny or puzzling question
Especially if you know me, you know I just graduated
With a bachelor's in psychology
Yep, that's true I love psych
All throughout I loved it
But you know, MANY people
Will take their first psych class
Before going into, will think they loveee itt
But then, get Fs
Awful! What?!
What did I do? What happened?!
You know it's fine but I'm just letting you know
Some people think psychology is for hippies
Cool people
Or people who want to do hypnosis...
No guys!!
I researched a lot and I'm a good researcher
If you're a type A personality,
maybe you already know a lot about psychology,
But maybe you just have the idea or concept of psychology
Or have a lot of friends who just graduated and said it was really easy
Don't take their advice
Psychology is not easy for a lot of people
I just graduated from a deaf university called Gallaudet University
It's a great school
I really loved it
I was only there for a year and a half because I transferred there
And then graduated early
It was short but I still feel like I set roots in there
Getting to know everything and everyone
Got what college was like there
You know?
I could sense it was good!
But because it was a deaf college,
There was more of a focus on ASL than English, which is good
I liked that
Homework assignments would be more signing videos
and hands-on projects
A few English essays here and there but not a lot
But if you're a PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR...
There's A LOT of English essays
A lot of research papers
If you don't like research...
Don't go into psych, sorry..
Research is a huge focus
Maybe you could go into social work
If you want to work with kids that's good
More often than not, kid-oriented jobs are social workers
If you want more of hands-on career,
where everyday is new,
environments are different, changing policies,
Work in schools,
Go to different people's houses,
Social work really has many roles
Psychology is more focused on specific concentrations within it
Most often either a psychologist,
You can get your master's later
and do general counseling, school counseling,
But there's not a lot of Master's options in psychology
General therapists
also psychologists, which would mean having a PhD.,
Is really a tonn of research
Again, there's a ton of research
If you want to be a therapist or a counselor,
Maybe you're not sure, then social work is probably for you
That's more flexible
A lot more changes and it's very broad
Psychology is more narrow, it's true
For me, I always thought I wanted to become a psychologist because
I'm really fascinated with the brain, it's functions,
abnormal psych, mental health,
mental illness,
Those are my biggest interests
and big focuses for me
I loved studying it
and researching
But my internship enlightened me
I learned that I didn't want to focus as much on mental health
Really seeing the behind the scenes
I truly loved it, but
When I was an intern, shadowing therapy sessions,
I just didn't really like it
It was too depressing for me
I want more highs and lows in my career
Fun sometimes
Highly rewarding as well
A job like that is highly rewarding
But I just noticed for me, it didn't match me
So then I was thinking what I should do
I grew up, all of my life
I always loved children and working with them
Talking to them and taking care of them
Nurturing them and other different things I enjoyed
I've always known that was my passion
So I was on the fence with teaching and psychology
I obviously decided psychology
I thought it was more interesting
As time went on, at Gallaudet University,
I sat down and talked with a lot
of professors, master's program professors,
master's students,
I did a lot of research myself
You really have to do self-research to figure everything out
No one will do it for you :)
Anyway as time went on,
It just clicked
Being a school counselor is the best of both worlds for me
Perfect match
School counseling because
I can work together with kids
And watch them grow over 3-4 years (or more depending!)
Continue watching them grow up
Seeing different changes in them,
Helping them develop into their best selves <3 :) ( the feels!!)
School counseling isn't just one role
Working with behavioral problems,
mental health and a variety of tasks
Collaborations with other people in the school too
And that's when I knew that was the perfect fit for me
You know?
I really like variety and ups and downs
All of the different responsibilities are what I need
I needed more stability
Meaning I could continue this and still be excited, you know?
If you have a private practice,
Prices are crazy high and keep increasing
All your clients will have to be rich
Because now insurance only covers about 6 sessions
Yes, last I heard was 6 sessions
So that really sucks
So school counseling is for me, but
You really have to research for yourself
And find the match for you
Pick your match and keep pursuing research for it
Do some shadowing
Other research ideas can include watching YouTube videos
You know the "Day in a life of.." videos?
They show you what they do for work
It's really cool!
Try that!
Figure out and keep your eyes open
My age, you can figure it out but I'm not going to tell you
But you know I'm passed highschool lol
I just graduated college so you can guess
But you know still
Life is a journey, and cherish that! <3
I cherish life and all of its ups and downs
Sometimes when you're trying to figure it out, it just hits you
Psychology is really narrow
So maybe social work or public health even
There's tons of options
But I can't emphasize research enough
Find the best match for you, alright!
