Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Five Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

It was confirmed today that oft-scrutinized second-year player Markelle Fultz will be out indefinitely with and injury.

The injury has been revealed as being Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, an ailment that affects nerves between the neck and shoulder that severely affects a person's range of motion and functional movement.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was among the very first to break the news, and says that the injury is treatable by physical therapy.

Though Fultz's future in the NBA is uncertain, here's what you need to know about the injury:.

Common Causes: Physical Trauma, Repetitive Injury, Anatomical Defects.

According to Mayoclinic.org, the injury can be caused by physical trauma, say, like the trauma experienced in a car accident.

It can also be caused by repetitive sports (or job-related) injuries, pregnancy, or "certain anatomical defects (such as having an extra rib).".

Fultz has famously referenced lingering pain in the affected shoulder from a motorcycle accident last year, and he's obviously been playing through pain ("repetitive sports injuries") as he attempts to get back into shape.

It may be possible that he's caused additional damage to the shoulder by attempting to play through the pain–his strange shooting form is almost definitely the result of this injury and his attempts to work through it, though for a long time it was assumed that his lackluster play had something to do with an over-the-summer attempt to adjust his shooting form.

The Thoracic Outlet is the Space Between Your Collarbone and First Rib.

The thoracic outlet region begins in the lower part of the neck, near the clavicle, and extends to the upper part of the arm.

This explains Fultz's apparent pain or discomfort whenever his shooting arm reaches the angle where this specific space on the body would be engaged.

He seems to experience a sort of barrier–whether of pain or simply a limited range of motion–when his arm reaches the 90-degree angle point of his shot.

This has confused the league all season, wondering what could have possibly been to blame for this strange downfall of a former No.

1 pick.

The Syndrome Occurs When Blood Vessels or Nerves Become Compressed.

According to Healthline.com, the important blood vessels, nerves, and muscles required for such ranges of motion as a basketball shot pass through the thoracic outlet.

Compression of any or all of these things can occur if the outlet is too narrow as a result of physical trauma, injury, or structural abnormalities in the patient's body.

If compression occurs in the thoracic outlet, the pressure places upon those nerves can cause noticeable pain in the area: the shoulders, neck, or arms.

Surgery May be Needed to Correct the Syndrome.

Markelle Fultz will begin physical therapy immediately, which can heal the injury as well as anything else.

In fact, though the syndrome sounds pretty scary, it's typically treated by just that: medication and physical therapy.

However, surgery may be in the cards, depending on the severity of the injury and the quality of the recovery process.

If the symptoms don't improve after therapy, surgery may be needed to ultimately correct the issue.

The Sixers are optimistic that Fultz could return within three to six weeks, but this will entirely depend upon his recovery and how the physical therapy progresses.

If he ends up needing surgery, his return date will likely be much further away.

TOS is Diagnosed via 'Provocation Tests'.

After going through a physical exam and having his symptoms reviewed by a specialist, Fultz was likely subjected to so-called "provocation tests" in order to ultimately diagnose the injury.

The tests are meant to induce the symptoms so that the doctor can get a clear idea of what the patient is dealing with.

They can include specifically-directed movements of the neck, shoulders, and arms in varying positions, or you may be asked to put your hands over your head for a few minutes at a time.

Additional tests can include X-rays, MRIs, or Electromyography (EMG).

EMG is a way to check out the condition of the muscles and the nerves that control them.

Since TOS affects the muscles and nerves at a base level, an EMG could have been easily been used to support or confirm a diagnosis for Fultz.

Brandon Browner's Net Worth: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

The NFL career of former cornerback Brandon Browner went off the rails following a shocking development in 2018.

Browner, who played five seasons in the league with three different teams was arrested in July.

The situation escalated quickly after the arrest and culminated in a final decision on his future away from the field recently.

As Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper detailed, Browner's original arrest came in Los Angeles in July.

He broke into the home of a woman he previously had been in a relationship with.

The woman reportedly attempted to leave but Browner refused to allow her to leave.

On December 4, Browner entered a no contest plea to one count of attempted murder and two counts of child endangerment, according to TMZ.

He was sentenced to eight years as part of the plea.

Let's take a look at Browner's career from a financial stand and break down his net worth.

Brandon Browner's First NFL Contract Came With Seahawks.

Browner was an incredible player in the Canadian Football League, so much so that it led to the Seattle Seahawks offering him a deal after multiple years away from the league.

During his four seasons in the CFL, he was a three-time All-Star and won a Grey Cup championship.

While his first stint in the NFL didn't work out, the Seahawks signed him to a three-year deal in 2011 worth $1,613,756, as Over The Cap details.

Browner had signed as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos back in 2005, but his time there was short.

He Signed a 3-Year, $15 Million Deal With Saints.

In what was unquestionably his largest NFL contract, Browner was able to parlay his success as a member of the Seahawks' "Legion of Boom" into a big payday.

As Ari Gilberg of Business Insider detailed, it was worth $15 million over three years and came after his only season with the New England Patriots.

The situation was somewhat strange, though, as shortly after Browner signed with the Saints he stated that he hoped to go back to Seattle, per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times.

Brandon Browner's Total Career Earnings Were Over $13.1 Million.

Browner's big contract with the New Orleans Saints above played quite a role in his overall income throughout his time in the NFL.

As Over The Cap shows, the former cornerback made $13,153,462 in total cash over his time in the league.

This number includes the $7.75 million he earned in just the two seasons spent with the Saints in 2015 and 2016.

Interestingly, Over The Cap also details that twice over the span of the three contracts Browner signed in the NFL, he earned 52 percent or less of the full deal.

With New Orleans, he made 51.7 percent of his $15 million deal and earned just 28.1 percent of the three-year, $13.95 million he signed with the Patriots.

Browner spent just one season with the Patriots on that three-year deal and was released after the first season.

Brandon Browner Didn't Earn His Final NFL Contract.

As NFL Network's Tom Pelissero revealed previously, Browner agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth the minimum salary of $760,000 back in 2016.

The deal featured no guaranteed money, so when he was released by the team prior to the year, the Seattle Seahawks weren't forced to pay his contract.

This was the final stop in his NFL career, as he was unable to find another job after that short stint in Seattle, which came when he was 32.

Browner's Current Estimated Net Worth is Estimated at $3 Million.

It's tough to gauge exactly how much Browner is currently worth based on his previous contracts and income, but putting it all together can help give a solid idea.

With that said, he had a few big contracts which didn't all get paid out after he was released, so that'll play a role in his estimated net worth.

The biggest factor which stands out is that while he did sign contracts worth over $31 million throughout his career, he only made the $13 million-plus from them.

It seems his projected net worth does factor that in.

In turn, The Squander revealed a number of $3 million as the estimate for his current net worth as of 2018.

While that's the consensus to this point, Net Worth Tomb did cite a slightly higher number at $4,762,500 while factoring in a few things, including $238,125 in endorsements, sponsorships or bonuses.
