Hi, everyone. I'm Noreen and welcome back to my kitchen today for our installment of kid Friendly summer snacks
I've got a little bit of a story time for you, and I'm going to show you how I do a flavored yogurt
Hack that is going to make your life a little bit easier
And I think save you a little bit of money in the long run
And you're going to be able to make all your kids happy and who doesn't like that
So let's go see how this all comes together
Today, I'm going to share with you a super easy way to make all your kids happy
By flavoring plain or vanilla flavored yogurt. That's what I have here is some vanilla yogurt
With Jam or in this case an all-natural fruit spread that is only sweetened with fruit juice
So this isn't about refined sugar. This is about natural fruit sugar, so this is a super healthy snack
It's a great breakfast you can add granola to it
You're just going to take about a tablespoon of the fruit spread and you can use listen you can use whatever
Jam that you have I've done this with my homemade Jam
But today because we're doing kid-friendly summer snacks I kind of thought let's go ahead and use that natural fruit spread
because that way it's not got a lot of extra sugar in it and you can just go from there, so
This is as easy as it gets
I've got these little jars our 4 ounces, so they're a half a cup. I fill them up to the bottom line
With the yogurt, and then a little tablespoon, which is the serving size of this fruit spread?
right on in there and boom
Strawberry yogurt
And the best part about this is you get to control
The type of yogurt use if you like organic yogurt which this happens to be organic whole milk yogurt?
Maybe you prefer a greek style yogurt. You can use that too
But yogurt is cheaper if you buy it in a big container than is if you buy it in the individual flavors package
Or even though squeezable yogurts if you break those down else per ounce they're expensive
so this is a really nice way that you can control what goes into your kids or into you for that matter and
you'll know exactly what's in there, and you can do this so simply and
again
Super easy pop them in your fridge mark them on. The top. What flavor they are so today
I've done strawberry peach Cherry and raspberry and
Me I'm not even like I know you will hear here's the raspberry
Give it a taste
Now this is what I use vanilla yogurt
So there is a little bit of sugar in that but I used one that had a lower sugar
And it was the stonyfield organic French vanilla
yogurt
It is not Vegan, but it is delicious
And this is just another way for you to kind of stretch your food dollar and make your kids happy
Like I said you don't have to use this particular fruit spread you can use whatever kind of Jam
You have on hand and you know maybe your kids like grape Jelly yogurt who knows because that's what they like
And you're not going to be able to buy that in the store
Like plums you can buy plum yogurt. You. Can't buy that pineapple yogurt. You can get pineapple jam, or you can use the crushed pineapple?
Really big possibilities are endless
But I something else you could have done put the fruit in first
Baked fruit on the bottom yogurt. That's right. That's a great idea honey
I didn't think about that you make your own fruit on the bottom yogurt
And then your kids can stir it up when you give it to them, so it's kind of like a little extra prize
I like fruit on the bottom yogurt. I always did
I know some people really don't like
Anything but the priests turn stuff, but that's fine. Whatever floats your boat
But here's the story time I've been doing this since I was 13 years old
because when I was 13
We had some very dear family friends. What we still do who live in British Columbia and
The reason that we met them was because I grew up in Tucson, Arizona
And that was the home of an organization called up with people and up with people was a youth
organization that was dedicating dedicated to spreading peace and
friendship throughout the World through music and Dance and
every year they would convene at the university of Arizona and
They would come from all over the world and the people of Tucson were asked to act as host families
For the kids that were there
for rehearsal and all that getting organized before their 4 troops went out across the globe to
Perform their wonderful music so I grew up with up with people and I still to this day
Sing many of their songs and I love them. They are no longer a thing anymore
One of the girls that came in stayed with us the very first year that we did it her name was Christine
we just really became close with Christine when she had her dress rehearsal her parents flew to Tucson from
British Columbia where they have a farm they stayed with us and their names are dick and vera and I love them to death
There are special special people
I haven't seen them in many many years, but Kris is now obviously all grown up has a family
I believe her children are actually grown up now, too
They dig and vera took us on a week-long camping trip like camper style camping trip across
Canada and we went from we went from British Columbia
Into Alberta and we saw Lake louise and banff and yes
Those elk really do and moose they roam the streets of banff, and it's super cool
but a little dangerous lake louise probably the most beautiful place I've ever seen on Earth in my entire life and
We went to the Columbia icefields, and it was just really a once-in-A-lifetime opportunity
To see parts of Canada that I probably otherwise would not have seen but any case in that camper on that camping trip
Zera only bought plain yogurt, and that's what we would enjoy for breakfast and never in my life
Had I put plain yogurt in my mouth, and it was horrible and revolting because I had no flavor
But it was super sour and varys said oh here, honey
And she brought a bunch of homemade jam from her you know farm. She grew all of her own fruit and
She had strawberry Jam and raspberry Jam. She's like what Flavor
Do you want and let's put some of that Jam in your yogurt?
And then you can have your own fruit flavored yogurt
so I know that that's kind of a long roundabout story to get where I was going but
But that's my story time about that
And it never left me I've been doing it ever since so thank you very aware ever you are for
Sharing that idea with me because it really is kind of Brilliant
And I think that it's an appropriate thing to share with you
All you moms and grandmom's out there yogurt is not cheap
And sometimes it can be difficult to you know you stack those little containers in your fridge
They fall over if you don't have a basket to put them in
This is a great way these little 4 ounce jars you can get a dozen of them for about five or six dollars
They're washable reusable. You're not throwing anything away
Just pop the lid on it mark it with what Flavor or just fill it with plain yogurt
or don't do that at all just keep the yogurt in the fridge and the Jam and the fridge and
When they want something ask them, what flavor they want and pull it out?
And it's all good. So that is my flavored yogurt
Hack and my story time about how you can flavor your yogurt
Any old way you want with things you probably already have in your fridge, so I hope that's helpful

I want to say good morning to everybody because this morning for me but it's not
morning for even our guest today so I'll just say hello this is Tambra Harck.
Welcome back to You Are U Symposium. If it is through your first time here

you are unlike anyone so it's ever been or will ever be throughout all of time I
find that extraordinary I find you extraordinary
you are universal and one of our guests assessment you are you symposium said
you know what else it's also you are unicorn this is the hostess so you know
we invite magic and possibility and appreciation for the property that's a
possible experience for us each individually and as a for us as
community of humans when we take the courageous task to know ourselves to
live from that deep well of wisdom that is our unique expression in life and to
bring that into a way that we live so that's my motivation for this call this
podcast this session I want to introduce you to my beautiful guest Jennifer
Abruzzo she is a founder creator
transcriber of soul language and so much more
today we're going to talk primarily about so language is beautiful project
that has really birthed through her as a model for knowing oneself so welcome
Jennifer are happy to have you once again thank you I'm so honored to be
here yay yay sister so I know that we have a finite amount of time and you
could talk for hours because we have in the past so why don't we start with
what's the language
that's a good oh sorry which is putting tangibility to soul not to put anybody
in a box but when you have the words to put to what your soul is and that
knowing you can connect with it in a deeper way so each one of us has three
core energies of soul your mission how you fuel that mission and then your
soulful personality how your soul prefers to go through life so when you
have that knowledge even for people been on the path for a very long time it
really allows you to understand where you're utilizing all of that gifts and
energy of soul consciously or where you're choosing to be in struggle and
then you can consciously connect and utilize all those tools that you that we
learn and have in our toolbox to move from struggle to consciousness ok so
first of all what a relief I imagine many people feel when they hear
tangibility to soul and I've been talking about you you notice about me
I've been talking about soul and listening to our soul and living from
the depths and understanding of our soul for many decades and it's often been a
challenge we've loop people are like yeah I don't want to do that but how and
yeah I've come up with my methods but I think that because you're such a like
you have such a value for practical application and tangibility which I
imagine most people don't even ever say the word to agility in their whole life
you know having heard a jerk come out of my lesson like that is such a great word
I'm more the tangential it's weaker right so let's talk about because I love
that on you our deal with those two offering the the wisdom tools could also
be life experiences so can you share with us how you how'd you get this
really good or is not generally tangible good I got it from asking some really
big questions he knew what my life purpose
was and powerful healer and teacher of service in the spotlight and I was like
okay god that's really groovy and God is what I call my higher power but really
pissed where's my community and where are my people and what do I do with this
groovy little title and I was speaking at a conference about essential oils and
life purpose this woman sat down next to me when
we're going to be friends and I went yeah I totally got that then my invoices
in the insect way said why her and not this other person across the way he
looks really groovy but I don't care if I ever see them again
like what's that and what I heard was stole language and I was like oh okay so
I'm going to keep asking questions and before long I had a paradigm of
structure to put tangibility soul I had 107 different energies across the three
different categories and then I started identifying people so languages when
identify this woman who knew nothing about soul language knew nothing about
107 energies of soul and we identified one of her sewing which is his partner
and I said has a resume with you she said well before we got on the phone I
asked myself if Jennifer asked me my phone language what would I say she said
I wrote down the word partner and I have warrior energy and I burst out
hysterically crying she's like oh my god are you okay I was like yeah you just
told him not crazy so you know and you know when I tell the story it seems like
you know it was like kind of a walk in the park but it was really like going on
a bike downhill without any brakes you know and so how loving a paradigm is and
now I support others and very matted the process and and you not only have to
download it then you have to bring it to people and you have to bring it to the
appropriate people because I can know you you certainly did have to write I
thought of a hurry up with them and it's not meant for anybody right good so far
you've heard a lot where's my community all right and then I was bringing some
language to people who didn't need it or want it needed
enclosed and though you know until I started really kind of listening and
going you did a deeper way and going oh so many nice people who who know that
the answer is within them and they're just asking kind of the wrong question
right and so that's how it kind of was burst all right so as long as I've known
you and I've lost track of how long that is you know longer than this lifetime
one might think one of the things that I have often said to you and and more
often you even said about you is that I love the way that you ask questions like
I'm kill intrinsically curious but your question technical ooh I never thought
to ask it like that like what makes you think of that
question and that and I don't know that I've ever heard you say that part of who
single soul languages for are people that they want to know but they and they
want to know the answers to the questions they just need to ask better
questions or ask the right questions yeah and I think here's the thing I
think highly intuitive highly you know master healer spiritual renegades people
with their own paradigm they're they're practicing their work and they're you
know they've been on the journey and I think sometimes you know doing that and
being there is we just know so much and often when we create a conscious
connection a deep connection with our soul it allows us for something to pop
where where we can step out of what we know and go into the knowing and I think
that's really what I mean by better questions
yeah Oh what so I'm sitting on my deck and I'm
looking out and there's a little skunks walking across the way
ah-hoo we're gonna like so so okay oh and now it's like the kingdom is coming
to try with us oh my god that's so fantastic love it and those who you know
love to follow animal symbol messages can ask themselves the question or ask
higher guidance we question of you know what the energy skunk what's the what
the enactment of two different very different creatures coming to join the
conversation if shows up I'm going to love this
cuz study animal I want that record tiger yeah do they have those in New
Jersey
mountain lions dishonest yeah I moved to a place where where I live on
the island no creatures like that so we have a super abundance of deer I mean
crazy amount of deer and I have an everlasting chant that shout out be near
here there trancing France occur all the time because nobody is after them they
just propagate them live everywhere there's no bears there's no big cats
it's amazing to live where there's not more vicious more powerful dominating
animals interesting thing yeah so on to
so here what I heard you say so far is that there's that the sole language
breaks itself down into three components mission how to fulfill the mission and
the sole personality but there's a hundred and seven energy so you can you
kind of talk us through how those three and 107 all kind of mesh together
sure so if we mess them all together 107 that's divinity right so our three are
our kind of a PhD and how we want to use those
energies this lifetime so it's like I always describe this this way so the 107
languages are as the giant cake batter of the design right your three is your
flavoring of divinity what you are here to kind of master what you've selected
to kind of really support what you want to experience in this lifetime so my
three my mission language here is called equalizer it's all about creating that
perfect formula balance first for myself because altered zone and then for others
my axiom a translation which is a sophisticated way of saying the fuel of
my mission or how I'll be known here which is that second category is called
teacher of integrity so all of my life I've been able to see where people are
out of the consciousness of love for themselves I have them to get back in to
give them the opportunity get back into that consciousness of love which means
back into balance and then the third category which is at soulful personality
category my language is called graceful warrior action movement courage and
grace so when we mess those three together we have a one-liner not to put
me in a box but again as a instrument to go this is my highest level of
consciousness how do I be there is I create balance for myself and others
through love integrity and courage and so you know when people really start to
understand that these are their core energies that they've kind of designated
for themselves to support them to really connect with their divinity to utilize
their divinity life becomes pretty fun because it becomes this kind of magical
playground of consciousness and then you get to go oh look there's a skunk and oh
look there's you know you get to really kind of see that that the world is
happening through you and by you and so life is a lot less full of struggle and
when there are challenges you have a go to connection to remind
yourself that you're safe and whole and complete
beautiful so for so I'm unit tracking in the way the three languages translate
into a statement for you I can imagine that from other practices I've used and
taught and hosted people on that it for a while one could even use that
one-liner as as of self teaching as a tap stone you know like a mantra to you
know to say like I create balance you know for myself and others louder like
okay those weren't just words like if I feel how those resonates truth right how
they bring the equalizer into place right you know that's that one right
nary move by the way that is anyway oh yeah totally you do not never run out of
it but yes it can become an observation and a alignment tool of course it can
somehow were you know that's a perfect use of you know your soul language the
pioneer always forging new rows and and that's what I love about pioneering
energy is is you know pioneers go oh yeah there's the road but hey let's go
over here and make our own road right and you know the more the more options
you have to understand yourself your worlds your soul the divinity the better
you are because our viewpoint is really still this little penny you know small
viewpoint now God's point you know and so the more 360 you can see you know the
more likely that you are going to get in touch with that guide point of view and
that's where where you participate in the miracles of life mm-hmm I think you
just underscored with that statement I'm going to go back and transcribe it
because the what you just said there is my perhaps
my highest motivation for hosting this show fun you know like if people have
even just a glimmer more or or perhaps an entire path laid out before them from
within this answered through what we're offering on these podcasts or shows
whatever we call these things you I think of them as in depth conversation
then we've you know contributed beautifully to that ever-expanding
connection to the divine yeah and yeah so that's why I that's a good day's work
yes exactly so you just mentioned pioneer so we can
tell everybody my as the Jennifers we're talking about it the mission is also
called actually request right yeah I'm glad that right and so my soul language
in that quest or mission is pioneer so now we might interchangeably talk about
how these show up for us but there's 107 right so 170 of it long missing right if
you have a business you tend to want if you don't have any languages in common
with your business because most people don't and you call in a business to do
something bigger first for yourself yeah first for yourself and then for
others so nine out of ten times you need different energetic support for that and
when when a business languages are identified then especially with
entrepreneurs they realize how much that they're not their business and how much
you know their business is really here to support them and the conversation
becomes easier and you're you don't get bogged down so much in the how because
you have a whole metaphysical support team just to support that and that's
really where where it's fun because businesses that energies just pure
consciousness it doesn't have all of our belief systems and all of our
experiences and you know now the pain of when you were seven its
conscious doesn't have your birth trauma yeah you put your consciousness in it
it's going to act purely conscious and if you put struggling and it's going to
act in struggle and so when we when we work in tandem with a person and their
business you know so often I hear well I really connect so much more deeply to
the business energy and I'm like yeah because it doesn't have your crap right
because it's like sitting in this giant easy chair of love right so now the
reason why you're not getting kind of what you want to have a business it's a
personal problem of the business okay so my world is pretty fun skunks
are included it's gone soon and woodpeckers I imagine that there are
people who are doing wait what'd you just say wait what because the
perspective that you're suggesting here is not one that most people talk about
or ever find really and I think what you're talking about also is the kind of
thumb in in a way I asked it's an aspect of we are creating this change in the
world that humanity has never seen before we are living it out loud right
now and business may or may not have been what you just described in the past
but it has the potential of being that right now
and that's extraordinary it's extraordinary and I think you know
here's that here's what I believe I believe that there's been extraordinary
change in every moment of history because yes there's she can't eat right
and everything the thing what's really happening in this time frame is we're
really coming up to a power of choice we're really starting to understand
and we can choose to be one with the divine whole and complete conscious and
the consciousness of love and peace or we can choose not to and I think what's
happening is is more and more people are lining up and going how do I learn how
to choose mm-hmm and I think that's a powerful transformation of all kind of
jump in our consciousness right now I think next to and an example of the good
of better questions okay yeah yeah yeah how do I learn how to choose how do I
tap into my power of choice yeah yeah all right so I'm going to say that the
one of the reasons that I love what you've done is that when you use your
own soul language as a way to bring this whole thing through like courage come on
I think that your story of how the languages reveal themselves to you is a
great example of living and courage with with that ever-present communication
with soul and the divine I always think that yeah I mean I have what that you're
doing is you know my salmon is and it's so often like a warrior statement like
okay I didn't think I was doing anything special like you know it's not try to
spit off and people will say that about you know they're kind of greatest gifts
we hear that all the time yeah well can't really do that no everyone can't
do that right yes yes oh my gosh good if you know it's one of those I so
understand what you mean and I see it and of course we can cheat on others you
know I feel like having that know that about yourself like this like your most
exquisite a specter see that strengthen you and completely
but then there's no deceit on ourselves like who's only you know I have that
which is one of the great gifts that I think so language can bring is that we
can certain see more and more of ourselves in that reflection of the soul
energy I'm not in my um and not in my head and not in my ever-changing head
that now think that this has been the way it's always been which is a whole
big thing I think in itself the so we're going to go with this because I think
that if we look at tangibility to soul and where we were a moment ago was okay
so people have their own soul language which heís also the imprint from the
with the person's life right so murmured our our life Yama's and struggles and
our core wounds but also our grace and and experiences of love and acceptance
or challenge and then there's so language to business are there also soul
language to partnerships like marriages are there strategies between people and
places yeah places you can't really identify a place
because nobody really has permission over that place so I wouldn't know like
who spiritually to ask but sacred partnerships yes I can identify the soul
energy that comes together brought by to people whether it's to collaboration
partners whether it's a marriage whether it's you know a romantic relationship or
a friendship and then what's really groovy there's Jennifer Broome does the
language and money so she can identify the sacred partnership between you and
money and then I do identification of the sacred partnership between you and
the divine and of course my language my mission language in that category is
called pioneer and I went off or SNAT all those of course is
and so whenever I kind of you know turn my fist and cursing kind of God and
that's what I call my higher power I go oh wait okay what new world are we
forging here oh and it allows me to remember oh wait you know God not doing
him you know yeah yeah had time and time examples of you know it for it to be
more clear that God you knew who I knows who I am he would have people grew up
Catholic would have to sit down next to me and say hello because some of the
kind of examples that I can give are so tangible so in-your-face that they can't
be denied can you give us an example of what a great example it's okay bring the
example so I'm coming home from having dinner with a friend of mine and it was
a good dinner but I was feeling stuck kind of sad my dad passed away several
years ago we were not in the best of relationships and I've been working on
kind of the dead dad issue for years and I was just feeling a little sad about
you know missing my father and I was like okay God okay dad I want a big sign
a big sign that you know You Know Who I am
dad loves me like I want it in my face so I turn on the radio and a song comes
on and you know looks like one of my father's songs as I can you know at
that's not that's not it in your face sign that could happen to anyone and so
the song goes off the radio announcers is talking about how people are calling
in about you know music you know the dancing and music from the 70s and you
know going to clubs and he goes through all these clubs I was like I don't know
what that is oh no that is and then he goes yeah you know and that brothers
three and I'm driving and I literally almost went off the road Brothers tree
what's the name of my father's bar when I was growing up
and AI forgotten about the bar and B I didn't even know that had live music and
for that to occur I was like okay I get it
like even thinking about it still brings up tears like that's pretty awesome like
yeah to have that tangibility of going okay so next time I down I get to
remember this you know and it's such a tangible it stretch it in your face
and so often when we're you know we we kind of ask for those signs in your face
and we're getting them all along we just don't know we're getting them
and I think that creating that conscious connection with your soul allows you to
be more present to the profound fact about how we are so connected and we are
so provided for and it's a matter of working the system you don't I mean in
the matter of accepting it and kind of getting on the bus rather than spending
so much time letting the bus pass us by right you know I think it is a beautiful
example of okay I could not have made that up because I didn't even remember
it right and I think that there are times when we've heard so many different
words of expression of this energy you're talking about how things get lets
sake of the good to our consciousness so in The Alchemist Paulo Coelho Calvin
omens and humans design they say watch for the signs I usually refer to it a
synchronicity which is more of a union approach and playfully call them gods
nods like we're gods this God whatever your the expression of divine it just I
like to play on words that you know kind of like gods just nodding in agreement
like yep here is one for you uh-huh this one here is the uh-huh
and they come constantly but they're there with us always and then we notice
them or don't if we don't they you know it doesn't mean they're wrong or they're
you know we're blind we just didn't notice them or busy we're distracted
we're not trusting whatever and then when we notice them and take them in

divine I think that is because humans are under the missing miss
interpretation that yeah is much more entertaining much more interesting than

of the power of choice but can I choose to focus on connection can I choose you

connection to focus on divined focus on beauty to focus on love whatever the the

5 Showing Signs That Your Life Is About To Undergo A Massive Change
There are moments in life when we believe that everything is falling apart.
What we actually don't know is that, at times like these, when we feel hopeless and at a point of no return,
everything is falling to its place.
Change is not always welcome but it's inevitable and often when we believe that our life is a complete chaos,
it's because everything is being arranged in order to synchronize with our true passions and desires.

The things you don't like have become unbearable
There is nothing worse than feeling annoyed.
It comes out of the blue, like a mosquito while you're asleep, and it's starts itching, making you scratch your skin till it bleeds.
When little, meaningless, things in life start bugging you be sure that a change is about to happen.
It has to happen.
There is a certain amount of negativity that we can deal with before the last straw breaks the camel's back.
Something snaps and we take action.

You feel lost
The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself.
We've all heard these words.
It kinda sounds backwards, but that's only until we figure out why.
When you're lost you have no direction and when there is no direction there is no desire.
When there is no desire you don't need anything and when you don't need anything, that's when your soul starts to speak.
Even though things might see out of control, in this moment you are in a perfect disposition to accept everything that your heart is
completely and unconditionally trying to show you.
You're now tracing your new path and maybe what you really need is that radical change that will help you get your mind, body,
heart and soul in sync.

Leave the incubator
Have you ever noticed that there are periods when your schedule is completely packed with adventures, parties with your friends and family,
and trip to a point when you feel that you are barely keeping up?
On the other hand the rest of year you spend isolated, even depressed, going through deep introspection.
The length of these cycles varies but we all go through momentum shifts during our lives.
We need these cycles to form our perspective of the world.
Moments spent introspecting offer us emotional, psychological and spiritual growth, while the outward pulses manifest as new experiences,
traveling and broadening our horizons.
When you break free from the incubator period, it feels like you are being reborn.
This means that you took your time to recharge your batteries, take a step back and reevaluate the things and people that surround you,
in order to set another goal and trace a new path towards a better life.

You feel scared, excited and anxious at the same time
The incubator stage you have been going through is finally coming to an end and now you have a new course in life.
So, what's next?
When something feels scary and exciting at the same time….you shod go and do it.
Take the leap, as you definitely feel something big is about to happen and the momentum is building.
You have no idea what to expect, but you feel that you are on the right path and you are anxious to see what is waiting for you at the end
of the tunnel.
At moments as such, there is no point in making big plans, as they are probably going to get canceled or postponed and it will only give
you headaches and frustration.
You've set your goal, but the energies are still aligning as the many possible outcomes unravel.
You need to explore and evaluate every single one of them before you decide to follow the path your higher self had already chosen.
Be patient, stay open and go with the flow.
These are exciting times.

Synchronicities
Is there anything better than the subtle clues left by the univers, pointing that you are on your true path?
Synchronicities serve as soft assurances that your actions, thoughts and feelings are aligned with your higher self.
When you are about to undergo a major shift, you will start seeing number 5 everywhere you turn.
Number 5 is the clearest of signs that you need to change yourself, or the things around you,
because you are going through times of change that will transform you forever.
Nevertheless, a change should never be perceived as positive or negative.

Session 204 Chapter 2
Verse 196 And complete the pilgrimage and the Umrah
for the sake of God.
If you are prevented from doing so, then whatever offering for sacrifice you can afford, and
do not shave your heads until the offering has reached the place of sacrifice.
If any of you is ill, or has an ailment of the scalp, he should compensate by fasting,
or feeding the poor, or offering sacrifice.
When you are in safety, anyone wishing to take a break between the Umrah and the Hajj
one must make whatever offering he can afford.
If he lacks the means, he should fast for three days during the Hajj, and seven days
on his return, making ten days in all.
This applies to those whose household is not near the Sacred Mosque.
Always be mindful of God, and be aware that He is stern in His retribution.
(Chapter 2: Verse 196) The order of verses and topics in the Holy
Quran is fascinating.
A few verses earlier, God began by talking about fasting Ramadan, and after that He discussed
the Hajj pilgrimage and its appointed times.
The month of Ramadan comes before the months of Hajj, so the flow of the verses is consistent
with the flow of time.
These verses were also interjected by the discussion about the legislation of fighting
–more specifically during the sacred months- which is also consistent with the flow of
time.
The verse under study starts with: "And complete the pilgrimage and the Umrah for
the sake of God" indicating that the obligation of Hajj has already been established, and
what Allah is asking you to do is to perform it to perfection.
The Hajj pilgrimage and the Umrah share many rituals and acts of worship, but they differ
in the fact the Hajj pilgrimage has a specific appointed time and requires the presence in
Arafa.
Take note that when God talks about obligation, He Almighty only mentions the Hajj pilgrimage
–not the Umrah-.
God says in the 97th verse of chapter 3: The Hajj Pilgrimage to the House is a duty
owed to God by people who are able to undertake it.
This is yet another proof that the Quran has to be studied as a whole and not taken out
of context.
More specifically, you should gather all the verses and Prophet narrations that discuss
a certain topic and study them together.
It is the best way to assure that you have a complete understanding of the subject.
Here is an example from the 3rd verse of chapter 9.
God says: And a proclamation from God and His Messenger
to all people on this day of the Major Pilgrimage: that God disavows those who associate partners
with Him, and His Messenger likewise.
In this verse, the phrase "Major Pilgrimage" refers to the Hajj, and indicates to you that
there are other types of pilgrimage which you can only learn about from other verses
and narrations.
Likewise, when you read the prophet's narration that says: "Hajj is Arafa" you understand
that the main event during Hajj is the event of standing at Mount Arafa, which is not a
requirement of the Umrah pilgrimage.
As you see, a higher level of understanding can only be obtained by looking at all the
Quranic verses and prophet's narrations regarding the topic on hand.
Here is a commonly asked question: Since Hajj and Umrah are two distinct acts of worship,
can they be performed together, or should they be done separately?
Scholars have differed regarding this issue.
Some said that doing an exclusive trip for Hajj is better, while others encouraged doing
both on the same trip and in the same Ihram.
This means to perform Umrah first, stay in the state and attire or Ihram until the Hajj
duties are completed.
A third opinion is to break your state of Ihram between Hajj and Umrah.
In other words, you arrive and perform Umrah, get out of Ihram and begin a new one for Hajj.
God says: 'When you are in safety, anyone wishing to take a break between the Umrah
and the Hajj one must make whatever offering he can afford.'
The verse continues: "And complete the pilgrimage and the Umrah for the sake of God."
Allah is aware that some people may only perform the superficial rituals of the pilgrimage;
there will be others who will go to Hajj to take advantage of the high season for trade.
This verse is a reminder to all of us that the pilgrimage should be performed and perfected
for the sake of God.
In fact, even the thought and planning you put into making this trip should be done with
God exclusively in mind.
Purity of intention will serve you well in other matters too.
If your intention to perform the pilgrimage of Hajj and Umrah is for God's sake, then
you would make sure that the money you use to make this trip is earned by lawful means.
The Hajj trip should be pure in all its aspects, whether spiritual, financial or social.
Prophet Muhammad –peace be upon him- said: "Those of you who properly perform the Hajj
pilgrimage without committing indecent acts or mischief will be cleared of their sins
as if they were born today."
Sadly, some people misunderstand this narration as an excuse to do whatever they like before
Hajj because all sins will be forgiven.
We answer that the purity of your intention and the purity of your finances start well
before the actual pilgrimage trip.
Moreover, it is crucial to clarify which of your sins will be forgiven.
God will forgive all your sins and shortcomings in your duties towards Him.
In other words, if you have wronged yourself in your relationship with Allah –such as
not performing your prayers, or fasting carelessly- then Allah will forgive these shortcomings.
However, if you have wronged your fellow man, then these sins have to be addressed justly.
God will forgive your sins towards Him, but He will not forgive your sins towards other
people.
So make sure that your dealings with people are just and fair, and seek forgiveness from
those you have wronged.
If you owe somebody money, you cannot go to Hajj until you pay what you owe, or at the
very least obtain that person's permission to go to Hajj.
Such are the steps on the road to purity before you go on the actual trip to Mecca.
Allah also knows that –despite your best efforts-, there will be circumstances outside
your control.
You may fall ill before your trip and be advised by doctors against traveling.
Border authorities may prevent you from leaving your country or entering the Holy Land.
This is similar to what happened to the Prophet and his companions in Huddaibya when they
were prevented from entering Mecca.
Allah –the all merciful- wants to give you peace of mind, and to honor your efforts and
intentions.
He says: 'If you are prevented from doing so, then whatever offering for sacrifice you
can afford, and do not shave your heads until the offering has reached the place of sacrifice.'
You have the option of earning great rewards by sacrificing an animal –if you have the
means to do so- in cases where you trip was unsuccessful.
Allah gives yet another permit to those who are ill or have scalp issues to compensate
by fasting, giving charity or sacrificing an animal.
Here again, you can see the beauty of Islam.
God gave three choices for the ill on a progressive scale.
First, there is the option of fasting which only benefits the person who fasts.
Second, at a higher level, there is the option of giving charity, which helps the believer
and a few poor people; yet for those who strive to do better, the third option of animal sacrifice
is given, which is enough to feed tens of poor people.
You can choose what you want to do based on your level of faith, finances, and desire
for reward.
Here, we should take a moment to study the true meaning of the phrase "If he lacks
the means."
Sadly, we see some people who –as soon as they make it to Mecca or Medina for Hajj-
rush to the market to buy gifts and souvenirs.
And when the time comes for the animal sacrifice, they are out of money and claim that they
do not have the means to do so.
We answer that 'not having the means' should be applied faithfully.
In other words, it should be a valid excuse to those who are in true poverty or had a
real financial emergency.
Buying gifts and spending money on luxuries should only be done after all the necessities
of worship have been satisfied.
The phrase: 'If he lacks the means, he should fast for three days during the Hajj, and seven
days on his return, making ten days in all' has been explained by the scholars to apply
to those who know beforehand that they would not be able to afford an animal.
It does not apply to those who put themselves in a situation where they run out of money.
The prescribed fast for the poor are three days of fasting that can start as early as
the 2nd day of Eid, and seven days on the way back home or as soon as the traveler returns.
God says: 'making ten days in all' so we understand that it is not a choice between
fasting three and seven days, but an obligation to fast a whole ten.
Moreover, those who fast these days because they honestly could not sacrifice an animal
will earn the full reward from Allah as if they had sacrificed.
The verse ends with: 'Always be mindful of God, and be aware that He is stern in His
retribution.'
Why would Allah warn us of severe punishment just after He offered such ease and accommodation?
We answer that Allah does not want you to take advantage of or abuse His permits.
They are reserved for those in poverty, those who are ill, or those who run into real emergencies,
not for the lazy or the opportunist.
