Why Sleeping MORE Makes You Feel TIRED? - Duration: 2:02.
This is Matt here and today I will be answering the question of why we feel tired after sleeping for too long.
I'm sure you have all had a day where you wake up feeling groggy yet you see the clock and you've slept more than usual.
Well in fact this feeling is caused by a little group of cells in your hypothalamus being very confused.
The hypothalamus by the way is a little part of your brain that controls sleeping patterns, hunger, thirst and sweat.
The little group of cells inside is called the circadian pacemaker,
which has evolved over time to regulate energy on a daily basis because of Earth's rotation about its axis.
Hence the reason why you can't save up sleep and not sleep for long periods of time.
Sleep occurs in cycles and so this pacemaker becomes
accustomed to regular amounts of sleep and the duration of sleep from start adjusts accordingly.
This pacemaker has a job to keep all other cells in your body on the same clock as your sleep is.
When you sleep too much that pacemaker gets confused and starts telling the cells a
different story from what you're actually experiencing creating a sense of fatigue.
To break it down, sleep occurs in mini cycles.
You may not feel it but each cycle lasts approximately 3 hours.
The REM or rapid eye movement phase of your sleep cycle is the most mentally rejuvenating phase,
this is also when dreaming occurs. When you oversleep it means you may have
entered another cycle and so waking up during it makes you groggy as it is the primary rehabilitation phase.
Basically the only sleep that really counts is your REM sleep.

Women with grown children and tots already tucked up in bed were tuning into the Cbeebies bedtime story on New Year's Eve, thanks to the man reading it.
Tom Hardy prompted men and women to swoon as he read the daily bedtime story on the children's TV channel, joined by his sleepy dog.

Hardy chose to read You Must Bring a Hat, by Simon Philip and Kate Hindley, complete with character voices.

Fans flocked to twitter to ask when the bearded star would be back, and to comment that he could read them a bedtime story any day.

The book follows a little boy's quest to get to the hattiest party of the year, where entry rules strictly require the wearing of a hat.

The story is described as having a surreal ending and many joked that they didn't know what it was about once it was done, though that may not be anything to do with the plot.
