You are, according to the FBI, more likely to die as the result of faulty furniture

than by an Islamic terrorist.

So, you should really be scared of your La-Z-Boy.

For a very long time, really the only Muslims that you saw on TV were the Muslim villain

who would scream, "Allahu akbar!"

and then blow himself up.

[Clip] "Allahu akbar!"

And then there was, like, the "good Muslim".

So you have that great movie "Body of Lies",

and you're like "Oh, look it's a Muslim

guy who's good, he's, like, with the CIA!"

No! He's dead.

Like, three minutes into the movie.

He's done.

In the 1980s, being Muslim in America was like being Martian.

I grew up in a predominantly Mexican community.

So I just told everybody I was Mexican.

I didn't really know that much Spanish.

I knew, like,"Órale!" and I just, like, would throw that out every

once in a while.

"Órale!"

And people would be like, "Oh, you're obviously Mexican".

It was very important that we kept the whole

Muslim and Iranian thing on the down-low as much as possible.

I was longing for a way to express myself spiritually.

And so, I started reading about Islam,

I started reading the Quran.

The more I read, the more I realized

this is what I already believe, I just didn't know there was a word for it.

[Clip] "Please welcome back to the program,

Reza Aslan."

[Clip 1] "Reza Aslan."

[Clip 2] "Reza Aslan."

[Clip] "Reza, let me start with you."

The hardest part for me when I'm being interviewed,

is to tamp down my astonishment.

[Clip] "The question at the bottom of the screen that everyone is looking at:

does Islam promote violence?"

The thing that's mostly going through

my mind is "calm down, calm down".

[Clip] "The justice system in Muslim countries,

you don't think, is somehow more primitive"

[Clip] "or subjugates women more than in

other countries?"

[Clip] "Did you hear what you just said?

You said 'in Muslim countries'."

Please don't generalize about 1.7 billion people in the world.

[Clip] "You're a Muslim, so why did you

write a book about the founder of Christianity?"

[Clip] "Well, to be clear, I am a scholar

of religions with four degrees, including one in the New Testament and fluency

in biblical Greek."

The Fox News video, that one really touched a nerve.

I woke up the next day and realized I had

ten thousand new followers.

I mean, everybody was talking about it.

I got a lot of positive comments from people.

Muslims who were saying, you know, for the first time,

"Okay, now we have proof

of how we are being dealt with all the time.

This is what it's like to be Muslim in America."

The negative stuff, however, was much, much louder.

I've got an entire file folder of just death threats.

After about ten years of being cable news' favorite Muslim,

I've come to the realization that I don't think it's doing any good.

Bigotry is not a result of ignorance, it's a result of fear.

And fear is impervious to data, fear is impervious to information.

The only way that you're gonna dissipate that fear

is by getting people to know someone that they're afraid of.

In this country, we went from overwhelming

majorities who were against same-sex marriage

to overwhelming majorities supporting

same-sex marriage within the span of a couple of years.

What changed peoples' minds was "Will and Grace",

was "Modern Family".

Was watching people who were gay,

on television, being, you know, normal.

They're struggling with the same issues

that you're struggling with.

They are human beings.

And so for the last few years I've decided

that what I'm gonna do is try to change peoples' minds

through pop culture, through film and television.

Stories have the power to break through the

walls that separate us

into different ethnicities, different cultures,

different nationalities, different races,

different religions.

Because they hit us at the human level.

What's New in Kinemaster Version 4 - Duration: 4:05.

Kinemaster version 4 is a major update, so I wanted to take a look at some of the new

features.

The first thing you'll notice when you open the app is the addition of this button for

the new asset store.

Tap the button to enter the store.

The first time you enter you'll be greeted with this menu.

Tap Agree and Continue, and you'll start in the top tab along the left hand side of

the screen.

This tab serves as a featured area of the store where you can see assets from every

category.

In the store there are free and premium assets.

If you subscribe to the paid version of Kinemaster, you'll have access to all of the premium

assets.

Moving down the tabs, the next one is for special effects.

These effects can be downloaded from the store to your app.

Once downloaded, you can add them to an effect layer in your project.

The next tab is for transitions.

Below that are overlays, including Animations, Stickers, and Text & Titles at this time.

Below that are fonts which have been sorted into helpful categories.

And finally the bottom tab is for music and sound effects.

The layer menu has been updated to allow for the new Effect layers.

The two buttons for Video and Image layers have been replaced by one Media button.

The new Effect button is next.

The Stickers button has been changed to Overlay, followed by the familiar Text and Handwriting

layers.

Let's add some media to this project.

I'll add a video clip to the primary media track.

Now I'll add an image to a layer.

Something new for layers is the ability to crop.

Drag the handles to adjust the cropped area.

You can even add a mask by tapping this switch.

Change the shape of the mask by tapping here.

And you can even feather the edge.

I'll change this shape to a circle and feather the mask.

When I drag the mask area so that all sides are equal, a guide appears to show me that

the mask is a perfect circle.

Let's download and use an effect layer to see how that works.

I'll go to Layer, Effect.

There are two basic effects available right away; Gaussian Blur and Mosaic.

You can access the Asset Store straight from this menu, and it will take you directly into

the Effects area of the store.

I'll download the sketch effect.

The effect layer can be applied on top of all your layers, or between layers.

Adjust settings for the effect layer in the menu at the right like you would for any other

layer.

You can even add an animation with keyframes.

Another new feature is the Audio Level Meter and Master Volume Control.

When you play back the video, the volume meter appears to the left.

The meter will make it easier to check that your sound levels are in the correct range.

If you want to adjust the Master Volume for your entire project, tap the Project Settings

icon, and turn off Auto Master Volume.

Then you can use this slider to adjust the volume of your entire project.

The Project Settings Menu has also been updated.

Now there are handy controls for default image and layer durations.

Going back to my image layer, you can see that there are new wipes available in the

In and Out animations menu.

There's also a new Cracked Glass 3D transition.

I'll apply that here so you can see what it looks like.

And last but not least, Kinemaster version four has support for more Android fonts.

This handwriting font stands out at the top of the list, but I was really excited to see

Roboto included.

I feel like Roboto is the Helvetica of Android typefaces.

It's easy to read and offers a nice selection of styles and weights for your graphic design

needs.

In the 1940s and 50s, the American Medical Association was not only saying that

smoking—in moderation—was not a problem, but that on balance,

smoking may even be beneficial.

After all, most physicians themselves smoked; so, how bad could it be?

With the American Medical Association saying this, where could you turn back then

if you just wanted the facts?

What's the new data advanced by science?

"She was too tired for fun… and then she smoked a Camel."

Babe Ruth spoke of proof-positive medical science, that is, when he still could speak,

before he died of throat cancer.

Now, some of the science did leak out,

causing a dip from about 11 cigarettes a day per person on average down to 10,

but those that got scared could always choose the cigarette

that takes the fear out of smoking,

or, even better, choose the cigarette that gives you the greatest health protection.

Now, if by some miracle, there was a SmokingFacts.org website back then

that could deliver the science directly to the people,

bypassing commercially corruptible institutional filters,

you would have become aware of studies like this: an Adventist study out of California in 1958

that showed that nonsmokers may have at least 90% less lung cancer than smokers.

Now, with so much money and personal habit at stake,

there will always be dissenters.

But, given the seriousness of these diseases and the sum total of evidence,

we shouldn't wait to put preventive measures in place.

So, if you're a smoker back in the 50s in the know, what do you do?

With access to the science, you realize that the best available balance of evidence

suggests that your smoking habit is probably not good for you.

So, do you change your smoking habits or do you wait?

If you wait until your physician tells you, between puffs, to quit, you could have cancer by then.

If you wait until the powers that be officially recognize it, like the Surgeon General did

in the subsequent decade, you could be dead by then.

It took more than 7,000 studies and the deaths of countless smokers before the first

Surgeon General report against smoking was finally released in the 60s.

You'd think maybe after the first 6,000 studies maybe they could have given

people a little heads up or something?

One wonders how many people are currently suffering needlessly from dietary diseases.

Maybe we should have stopped smoking after the 700th study like this.

Now, fast forward fifty-five years.

There's a new Adventist study out of California.

Warning Americans about something else they may be putting in their mouth.

And, it's not just one study.

According to a recent review, the total sum of evidence suggests

that mortality from all causes put together,

and many of our dreaded diseases –

ischemic heart disease, and circulatory and cerebrovascular diseases, like stroke,

were significantly lower in those eating more plant-based diets,

in addition to less cancer and diabetes.

So, instead of someone going along with America's smoking habits in the 1950s,

imagine you or someone you know going along with America's eating habits in the present day.

What do you do?

With access to the science, you realize that the best available balance of evidence

suggests that your eating habits are probably not good for you.

So, do you change your eating habits or do you wait?

If you wait until your doctor tells you, between bites, to change your diet,

it could be too late.

Just like most doctors smoked back then, despite the overwhelming evidence

published for decades, most doctors today continue to eat foods

that are contributing to our epidemics of dietary disease.
