hi it's jennifer from Tarle speech and
language and this is your pronunciation
question of the week
today's viewer question is how do i say
words that end in dth like breadth and
width when I say them it sounds like
breath and with this is a great question
and this is a little more of an advanced
topic so get ready i know you can do it
so let's look at these words and talk
about what we're going to focus on so
the words our breath and breadth with and
width so to make these words sound
different focus on two things the vowel
and the ending sound combination so in
the words breath and with these vowels
are going to be a little bit shorter
than they are in the words breadth and
width and the reason is is that your
voice is going to be on for these d
sounds so your voice is going to stay on
a little bit longer for that vowel so
your your UM throat is getting ready for
the D so it's going to make that vowel
sound a tiny tiny bit longer okay and then
next you're going to make sure that you
start with the D sound and then add the
th we just had a lesson on another UM th
and then adding a d to the word this is
going to be the opposite and what you're
going to do here is stick your tongue
out for the D sound yes
stick it out of your mouth even though
typically we do keep it in your mouth
and make that D sound behind your top
teeth we are actually going to stick the
tongue out
touch your teeth and then keep the
tongue out there while you switch the
air and you keep it moving out of your
mouth by pulling your tongue down
slightly away from your teeth OK so it's
going to look like this
dth dthe and it's hard to kind of do in
slow motion so let's give these words a
try and let's start with breath breath
so on that you're keeping your putting
your tongue out and that air is moving
out for TH
breath now for this next word breath
really try to think about making this
vowel slighlty lately longer not long just a
little bit longer than the vowel in
breath and then stick your tongue out
for the D touch your teeth to stop the
air and then pull your tongue down so
that air can then start flowing over
your tongue breadth breath breadth okay now
let's try the next combination with with
again slightly longer vowel just a
little bit longer and then touch your
teeth for the d while your tongue is out of
your mouth and then pull it down for the
th width width breath breadth with width OK
give it a try i know people will notice
the difference
also keep in mind that the context of
your sentence will be very very helpful
to your listener um
these words are really difficult and I
even find myself saying them and they
sound somewhat similar when I'm just
saying them alone but when they're in a
sentence you can really tell the
difference
