Waching daily Dec 1 2017

hey, welcome to 12tone! let's try an experiment.

I'll play you a song, and you try to figure out what it is.

ready? here we go.

(bang) did that seem too short?

ok, let's try another one.

(bang) got it? well, how about this? (bang) ok, let's do one more for fun.

(bang) in case you missed any, those were Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears,

Every Breath You Take by The Police, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and Nirvana's Smells Like

Teen Spirit.

so how'd you do?

statistically speaking, it's likely you got at least one, and you may have even got all

four.

but each clip was less than half a second long: how were you able to put together so

much information in such a short time?

well, now we're getting into brain stuff and I'm just a music theorist, so I'm gonna have

to call for backup from my neuroscientist friend, Alie Astrocyte from Neurotransmissions!

Hey Cory!

Thanks for having me.

To be able to recognize short clips like these, we've got to pull from our long-term memory.

Scientists split long-term memories into a couple of different categories - declarative,

or explicit, and nondeclarative, or implicit.

Our memories of facts and events - and art and music - are declarative memories.

Certain brain regions are really important for letting you store lyrics like when you

memorized Hit Me Baby One More Time back in 1998 - and for remembering exactly what those

opening riffs sounded like when you heard them just now.

Scientists believe that our memories are processed through the hippocampus.

The hippocampus is a seahorse-shaped region located deep inside the brain.

The importance of this region in memory formation became clear after a man named Henry Molaison

had his hippocampus removed to cure his epilepsy.

After he woke up from the surgery, doctors discovered that he could no longer form new

memories!

The memories themselves are believed to be stored in the connections between neurons.

Even though we don't really grow many new neurons as we age, our brain cells are plastic

- that means they're adaptable and can change.

That's how our brains are able to connect different kinds of information together - by

wiring together different neurons and brain regions.

these specific results are from a 2010 paper written by music psychologist Carol Krumhansl.

the full paper is linked in the description, but the main point was to better understand

the relationship between memory and music.

that is, when we commit a song to memory, how is that information connected? in order

to explore that, Professor Krumhansl collected a list of 28 popular songs and took tiny slices

of them to play for her experimental subjects.

and I mean tiny: 400 milliseconds, to be exact.

when she tested the clips with the music identification software Shazam it was unable to even recognize

them, but her subjects were able to identify them about 25% of the time.

One interesting result was a strong correlation between confidence and accuracy: that is,

when a test subject knew the song, they also knew that they knew it.

After giving an answer for each song snippet, the subjects would give a confidence rating

from 1 to 6, with 1 being "no idea" and 6 being "I definitely know both the title and

the artist".

Despite having shades of grey on the scale (six, to be exact), there were clear clusters

at the extremes: roughly 70% of answers were marked with either a 1 or a 6.

And that confidence was justified: about 95% of 6s had the correct answer and 97% of correct

answers were marked with a 6.

she also asked them to identify a couple other properties of the song, including decade of

release, style, and emotional feel.

the last two are hard to measure objectively, so the results were compared to the subject's

own judgments when listening to longer clips from the same song afterwards.

but the most interesting one to me is the release date, because of a well-known phenomenon

known as the reminiscence bump.

The reminiscence bump is a phenomenon where we are more easily able to recall memories

from certain ages.

In this case, from about ten years old to about thirty.

The theory says that we remember things during this time because there's just a lot of

stuff going on.

Everything is new and interesting, we figure out who we are, and we go through a lot of

developmental, educational, and life milestones during this time.

Since things typically tend to stabilize after that, less bandwidth goes towards creating

new memories.

But what's interesting about the reminiscence bump is that ALL memories seem to be stronger

- even things that aren't so important.

because our memories of that period are so much stronger, it stands to reason that we

would be better at recognizing songs from that era, but that's not what Krumhansl's

results showed.

her subjects were college students born around 1990, and while the most recognized clip was

a Britney Spears song that came out in '98, second place went to Respect by Aretha Franklin,

from 1967 and, overall, there was no significant correlation between release date and recognition.

of course, it's not like children are never exposed to older music, but the point is we

don't seem to be better at recognizing songs from our own generation.

interestingly, though, even when participants failed to recognize the song, they were still

pretty good at guessing when it came out, which means that the differences in tone and

timbre between musical eras is very deeply ingrained in our minds.

but release date isn't the only thing that might've affected recognition.

for instance, the chorus is generally considered the most memorable part of the song: we often

call it the hook, and it's the part most likely to get stuck in your head.

but is it actually easier to recognize? to test this, Krumhansl included two clips from

each song: one from the chorus and one from somewhere else. and while chorus clips did

do slightly better on average, she concluded that the difference wasn't statistically significant.

but there was one factor that was incredibly significant.

any guesses? it's actually really simple: do you hear the name of the song?

clips that included either the full name or part of it were over twice as likely to be

recognized, which makes a lot of sense.

compare this (bang) to this.

(bang) it's a lot easier to place that second one, isn't it?

But science isn't science unless it's repeatable, so Krumhansl tried another variation on the

experiment.

Before, she used 400 millisecond clips.

But in the second experiment, she used only 300 milliseconds, and the results are predictable:

people got a lot worse.

In fact, they only managed to identify the song 11% of the time.

That said, most of the other observed patterns held.

People mostly either confidently identified both song and artist or had no idea at all.

And that last part is important: it was very rare for participants in either study to identify

just one of those factors, implying that a song's name and its artist are very closely

linked in our brains and we have difficulty accessing one without finding the other as

well.

These results make sense, given what we understand about how our brains link related information.

Even beyond this study, researching the effects of music on the brain is a whole subfield

of cognitive neuroscience.

As far as we can tell, music is a uniquely human development - so understanding how we

create and understand music might help us understand what makes our brains so special.

The brain regions dedicated to processing sound are larger in humans than in other species,

and we developed specialized brain regions to process language.

But music is a way of expressing ourselves that doesn't require words.

We know that music can have a physical effect on the brain - a small study in 2010 showed

that subjects who felt "chills" while listening to instrumental music showed an

increase in dopamine signaling in the striatum.

This means that listening to music isn't just psychologically pleasurable - it actually

increases the signaling of the brain's pleasure and reward centers.

There's even evidence that music therapy may be helpful for patients with mood disorders

like depression, and rhythmic movement therapy accompanied by music can help stroke and Parkinson's

patients recover function.

So there's a lot of good evidence that music is important to us, and /good/ for us - but

we've still got a long way to go before we understand where music came from, or why

it's so important.

so that's something you may not have known about your brain, but here's something you

may not have known about mine: I'm autistic.

I talked with Alie about what that means, as well as what scientists know about the

condition, over on her channel, Neurotransmissions.

I learned a lot, and I've put a link to that video in the description, which you should

really check out.

ROOM11 - Nihilophobia - Duration: 4:05.

Have your senses taken away

Clear your mind to find a way

Overwhelming fear, nothingness

Paradise of emptiness

Mellow whispers in a forest

Birds' softly whistled promise

The constant noise that keeps you sane

This rumbling is in your brain

Hide and seek in neon colors,

To have our grey parts covered

When it's daytime, we block the light

Though it keeps us safe in the night

Teased by the soft touch of the breeze

A kiss from your lover to appease

Your skin, a prison or shelter

Radiates like glowing ember

Addicted to an unknown scent

From a dream where you and I met

I wanna find it wide awake

Until then, my mind's gonna ache

Total War: Arena - Hero Chronicles: Boudica - Duration: 3:37.

She defied one of the mightiest empires the world has ever known,

and in her wrath, burned the city of London to the ground.

Freedom fighter, violent insurgent— she is Boudica, Queen of the Iceni.

43AD: Rome begins its conquest of Britain.

Less than two decades later, in 60AD,

the occupation is rocked by violent rebellion.

In the first century AD, the Roman Empire dominates the European continent.

In Britain, local tribes are made client states of Rome

and the area south of what is now Scotland was declared Britannia.

Among the tribes living under the Roman yoke are the Iceni.

In 30 AD, Boudica is born into a noble Iceni family.

Her husband Prasutagus becomes king of the Iceni.

Boudica rules as his queen.

In exchange for their loyalty to Rome, the Iceni live in peace.

But in 60AD Prasutagus dies and everything changes.

The Romans plunder Iceni lands.

Boudica is flogged and her daughters violated.

She summons an army of tribesmen and embarks on a campaign of vengeance.

They sack Colchester, capital of Britannia, and march on London.

The settlement is undefended, the population flees.

Boudica's forces pillage, torture and murder

anyone unfortunate to be left behind,

and set the buildings ablaze.

Roman commander Paulinas, leading a campaign in Wales,

marches a 10,000-strong force south.

By the time he arrives, Boudica has left 70,000 dead in her wake.

The two sides meet at an unknown location

near the ancient route of Watling Street.

Boudica's army numbers as many as 250,000, divided into cavalry and infantry.

But they are disorganized and poorly equipped.

Their primary weapon, if any, is the long sword.

The Romans are outnumbered. But they are disciplined and battle hardened.

Their cavalry is armed with lances,

the infantry with broad shields and short swords.

The Romans await Boudica in a narrow battlefield flanked by woods.

Boudica's numerical superiority is blunted,

her soldiers handicapped using their long swords at close quarters.

But Roman scribe Tacitus writes

that the Iceni Queen stirred them with a passionate speech.

The battle opens with a shower of Roman javelins,

followed by a disciplined infantry advance and a ferocious cavalry charge

that sends the Britons into a panicked retreat.

Boudica has made a deadly error.

Her supply wagons are too close to the front line.

They block her army's retreat, leaving them at the mercy of the Romans.

As many as 70,000 are massacred.

Boudica's fate is unknown.

Competing claims say she died of wounds or infection,

or that she took poison to avoid capture.

The rebellion was defeated.

Order was restored to the lands of the Iceni

and the tribes that had lent their support to Boudica.

But her name lived on.

In the 19th century, the Victorians reinvented her as Boadicea,

an embodiment of the power and ambition of the British Empire,

and had a statue of her mounted outside the Houses of Parliament,

in the very city she raised to the ground.

No one knows where Boudica is buried, but there are plenty of theories.

One claims that her grave

lies beneath platform ten at King's Cross Station.

Canan, what is this? I asked you, what is this?!

Look! Get the hell out of my life.

Dandelions are not just a pesky weed. Here are 6 ways you can use them to help with your health - Duration: 5:07.

Dandelions are not just a pesky weed. Here are 6 ways you can use them to help with your health

Dandelions are viewed as a pesky weed to be pulled, sprayed or somehow destroyed. Little children love to pick them once theyve gone to seed and blow the seed puffs, watching the seeds float in the air.

Most people never stop and think that there is any good use for a dandelion.

To be honest, no studies have been done to back up the claims that most natural practitioners make regarding the health benefits of dandelions. The nutritional value has been corroborated, and it is commonly used as a coffee substitute.

Beyond that, no one really knows if the rest really works. The good news is that dandelion is considered safe to take unless you have an allergy to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigold, chamomile, yarrow, daisies or iodine.

Nutrition. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center(UMM), dandelions are an excellent source of vitamins A, B, C and D. They are also high in iron, potassium and zinc, so adding the leaves to a salad ups the nutritional value of your salad.

Coffee substitute. For those who love coffee, but cant drink it, UMM says that dandelion root is a commonly used coffee substitute.

The Hallmark Channel recommends using 1 tablespoon roasted, granulated chicory root; 1 tablespoon roasted, granulated dandelion root; and 32 to 35 ounces of boiling water.

Put it in a French press to make your coffee. If you cant get roasted roots, you can make your coffee with unroasted roots, but the roasting is supposed to make the coffee taste richer.

Diuretic. The Mayo Clinic states that dandelion has been used as a diuretic in the herbal world for a long time.

Before taking any herbal remedies, you want to check with your doctor as these can interact with other medications. Wellness Mama makes iced dandelion tea from 1 quart fresh dandelion flowers (gently washed), 3 quarts cold water, 1 cup hot water, 3 to 4 limes (juiced) and 2 to 3 tablespoons honey or sugar.

In a gallon jug, dissolve the sweetener in the warm water. Add the juice from the limes and the cold water. Add the dandelions and stir gently. Place in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours before serving.

Laxative. Dandelions are supposed to be a gentle laxative. Livestrong.com makes a laxative tea from 1 tablespoon chopped dandelion root boiled in 8 ounces of water for 10 minutes. Strain the root out and add 3 cups of water.

Normalize blood sugar. Dandelion is also supposed to help regulate blood sugar while equalizing cholesterol. Herbal supplements can be taken, but check with your doctor before starting them.

Stimulate appetite. For those who suffer from loss of appetite, UMM says that dandelion has been used to stimulate the appetite. Natural Homeremdies.org says to simmer dandelion root in water for several minutes and drink the tea 3 times a day.

Before taking dandelion for medicinal value, check with your doctor. If your doctor approves, though, you may find that dandelion is no longer a weed to you, but a wonderful medicine instead.

Using This Could Harm Your Dog! This Will Surprise 80% of Dog Owners! - Duration: 6:24.

Hey it's April Bolivar Your Friendly Dog Trainer

Follow My Lead LLC I'm April Bolivar and I am your friendly dog trainer and

certified dog training mentor and hey, if you just happened to come across this

video don't forget to subscribe! Because, when you subscribe you get notified and you

won't miss another one of these awesome videos and also if it's your first time

coming in I want to say thank you so much! And to my replay viewers thank you guys

for coming back I appreciate your time! And if it's your first time watching

I'm April Bolivar. I'm a certified dog trainer. A proud honors graduate of

Animal Behavior College and it's my passion to help you enrich your bond with your

dog. So today, disclaimer, we are going to get down and

dirty and get serious about some training equipment that I don't really agree with.

And what that is, what we're going to be talking about today is the choke collar.

So, first I want to say that no matter what information that you get from me or

my videos you always have to pick whatever method is best for you and your

dog and I also want to say that I do know that there is some certain places

where choke collars are appropriate but, most of us aren't training professional

security dogs or police dogs, so choke collars aren't an appropriate means of

training equipment for us. So check out this video and find out the truth about

choke collars and how it might be hurting your dog.

When you start to look into dog training you see all these different methods and

tools to use. Your head can reel from all the collars, harnesses, leashes and other

equipment that claim to be the best. So, how do you know what really works and

what doesn't? Well that's what I'm here for! Would you

like to know the truth about choke collars and how they affect your dog? Before I start

with that, the first thing you should do is decide what type of training methods

feel right for you and your dog. I hope you choose positive training methods,

because we've learned so much over the years on how punishment and fear may

work for the short term, but destroys your bond with your dog and quite

honestly messes your dog up! One of my least favorite training methods is a

choke collar. This is sometimes called the "trainer's collar" as it isn't really

safe to use by anyone but a trained professional. But, in my opinion no one

should use them. I'm going to put a choke on the choke collar and show you why it

is a dangerous and unneeded method of training. So, here's the number one reason

I believe you shouldn't use a choke collar: Your dog will associate pain with

whatever is in his or her environment so if there's other dogs, children or even

strangers around when his choke collar"s popped, they may think they are why he or

she is experiencing pain and then you have a dog showing aggression to

children, other pets, or complete strangers! Scary right? Now if that isn't

disturbing enough, I want to bring to light some of the health issues your dog

could experience from the use of a choke collar. Things like whiplash, fainting,

spinal cord injuries which could lead to paralysis, crushing of the trachea which

could cause partial or complete asphyxiation, crushing and/or fracture of

the bones of the larynx. These are only a few of the injuries your dog can

experience with a choke collar. So if you have a dog who pulls on the leash get in

touch with me or another positive dog trainer that is certified. There are some

really great harnesses out there that are amazing and will not hurt your dog. I

can show you what you need to do and help you learn how to teach your dog to

see walking on a loose leash as a positive experience. You will have a

well-trained dog who loves and respects you and wants to please you and best of

all that bond won't be fractured by fear and pain. Last of all I want to commend

all those dog owners who are watching this video who loved their dogs and who

strive to do the best and put the best into their four-legged friend. So do you

want to know more about the dangers of choke collars or you have questions or

comments? Leave them at the bottom comments section of this video and I'll

be happy to give you the full scoop on choke collars or answer any of your

questions and always happy to receive comments! And I want to thank you so much for taking some time out of your busy day and watching my YouTube video today. And I hope that it opened your eyes up a little bit about the dangers of choke collars.

And If really insist on using a choke collar you should get trained by a professional on the proper usage of using a choke collar and

that way it'll bring down a lot of the danger of those injuries. And hey, if you

like this video, could you please give it a thumbs up? Because it lets me know that

this is content that you're wanting and I can give you some more. And did

Edam Cheese December 3, 2017 - Duration: 1:31.

Look! The presents are under the tree. It's almost Christmas and for me there's one

gift I love to receive every year. Say cheese!

Edum cheese, that is. You don't have to be a fan of Mississippi State to be a

fan of one of the University's signature products, MSU's Edam Cheese. Developed

in 1938, the three-pound Edum cannonball has become a legendary cheese and a

prized Christmas gift. Part of the cheese's notoriety comes from his

trademark shape and packaging, but mostly due to its distinct, mild flavor. The

Edum recipe calls for fresh milk from the MSU dairy, cheese making assets and

enzymes, custom shaped cheese hoops, a 48-hour salt bath, and a final dip into

NRI Q&A, Documents For India Visit, November 30, 2017 - Duration: 7:14.

In this video, we will discuss documents that you need to keep with you when NRIs visit India

In light of lot of changes that have happened in India recently, NRIs need to bring in some of these documents

These specifically related to Aadhar and PAN card

Among the IDs that you need during your India visit are those having your overseas address and identity proof

You also need your India-related ID documents like PAN card. It is very important for you to carry your original documents

This is all the more important due to the current requirements for updating KYC details in the bank for resident Indians as well as non resident Indians

Also, carry your bank locker keys with you since it has now become important to periodically access the bank lockers

While in India, it would be great to get your Aadhar card done although it is not mandatory to get it done

Since you need to be there in person to get Aadhar card done, you can get this done for you and your family

You can get your bank details updated and India investments reviewed. So, do carry your relevant cheque books and details of your various investments

With the cheque books and debit cards for India based bank accounts you could use your bank accounts anywhere in India

Third-Person Effect - Are You the One? - Duration: 4:27.

Are you the one?

Hi, my name is Andrew from AndrewTorch.com and today I have a couple of studies about

perception. Perception about you and others.

At Arizona State University

they've took... they've taken eight hundred eighty eight students

and they asked them pretty simple question. On a scale, how are you influenced by the television?

Then they've took... then they've taken nine hundred other people and they asked basically very similar question.

On a scale, how are others influenced by the television?

Now that was the first study.

There were a lot of follow ups, but they showed that we believe, we as I or you,

that we are

more immune

to the influence of outside world,

basically in this case television, than other people.

So they've made a couple of more studies basically about marketing and internet and failure.

And results show that we believe that "I am more immune to the failure then you".

In general of course.

This is called the Third-Person Effect.

Now in 1988 they found out that there is actually something quite the opposite to that effect.

They called it First-Person Effect, and they've made it... this discovery by

making people watch public services announcements.

They found out that people

after watching something

good, creative,

hopeful,

they actually answered that they are more influenced by this message than others.

If you summarize it

basically there is an

positive illusion

that says that if something is bad in the outside of you

then this is... that you are more immune than all the others.

All of them. Now if something is better, full of love, hope, generosity, you believe

that you are actually more influenced by it.

So are you the one?

Because this does not stop on watching a TV or a commercial.

It's actually all around you.

It's in the hands of the doctor that believes that he is the one

who could save that person.

Even if the other guy standing

here would say it's impossible.

There are... basically this positive illusion always shows you better.

So it's great to have this positive illusion if you want to achieve something because you will basically believe that you are the one.

You are the one to make this marriage work. You are the one to make this job work.

You are the one to achieve all your goals.

You are the one. But on the other hand you are the one that will go into this building that is burning

and save someone which might not be the case.

So I just want you to be aware that

you will always... well, in general, we, people perceive ourselves as

more fortunate than others.

So just be aware of that

and be aware that it can be used for good. Because, well, you can believe that you can accomplish all your dreams

and that's what I wish for you.

Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed it and want more videos like this then please subscribe

and stay awesome, stay fearless and stay dreaming! See You!

Are you the one or two?
