It's not the same anymore.
It's become a town for the tourists
A human's need to seek answers never ends.
You want a car and you get it. You are really happy for a week and then it goes away.
When your income is minimal. How can you find happiness?
Life is full of problems
Too much stress is dragging us closer to the death bed.
I have been travelling for the last 17 days
My journey has now reached that place where the 'Char dham mahayatra' begins
Im here in Rishikesh.
People from all over the world come here, for their own different reasons
Some come here for yoga , some for peace, some for meditation and some for faith
And I have my own reason. I am in search of Happiness.
So lets see what this city has to offer.
The name of this place is 'Tapovan'.
This used to be a place of sages to come and meditate.
Rishikesh used to be a quiet place for people to meditate.
in the process be one with God.
Rishikesh used to be a place for 'Sadhus' and 'Rishis'
It's not the same anymore.
It's become a town for the tourists
Everybody comes here to enjoy now.
Are you happy?
I have never thought about happiness and sadness for myself.
If I have managed to do something for others, that is when I have experienced happiness.
I had always heard that Rishikesh is a place of Faith.
Now I have just entered Rishikesh and there seems to be a lot to explore
I roamed the streets a lot looking for happiness
but something that I found in almost every lane of Rishikesh were Yoga centres
It seems like this could be the source of something...Happiness or a feeling around it
You can find happiness anywhere.
Because we try to find it in material things.
Happiness is your home, television or even your wife
But the happiness that you get from this is temporary
Everything is within us and yet we try to seek it outside
To satisfy the hunger of the body – we eat
The satisfy the hunger of your heart – we listen to music or watch movies
But our soul is hungry. It is always hungry.
The food to satisfy hunger of the soul, is found in Rishikesh.
You can go anywhere in the world but you won't find the peace that you find here in Rishikesh.
What do humans need?
On one side there are the mountains, the other side you have the river flowing.
Everyone likes this natural beauty. Everyone wants it…
But this natural beauty is not available anywhere else
A human's need to seek answers never ends.
But Somewhere down the line you will have to stop.
I met two wonderfully different kinds of women on the Ganga Ghats,
just one thing in common with each other and with me
Both of them, like me, came here to find happiness
This one.. she came with her family
she wants to provide for them and want to give them a better life
I have three sons, for whose happiness I left home and came here to Rishikesh
I work from anywhere between 12-15 hours a day so that I can look after my kids.
And her.. she is here far away from her family
in search of her internal peace, which she believes lies in self discovery..
I am so far away from home and so disconnected from everything that I am able to be with me, by myself.
Wherever you go, problems will be a part of your life
But if you have a lot of money, you can rid yourself of the problems in life.
We, the poor feel that – if there is a problem,
it's because we don't have money.
There is a kind of happiness which is like ephemeral
It comes quickly and it goes quickly
For example; if you want a car, and you get it
You are really happy for a week and then it goes away
No matter what happens,
I feel happy with my life, with myself.
So far I haven't experience anything that I could say has been the happiest moment of my life.
Have been through such hard times that I cant even begin to share with anyone…
I have been through some tough things in my life,
I have been through alcoholism, drug addiction, so I went through a lot of pain
I think that's a treasure that I have
because I understand pain. And I know how to deal with it.
And it has also made me look for my own answers.
Even animals have kids.
That isn't when you feel happy.
You feel happy when you have given your kids a life that you yearned for.
I wasn't as happy when my kids were born,
but today I am happy that I have given them a good life.
You will find happiness by meeting people,
connecting with them and learning what they believe in.
And then something will just click.
And you will go like "Oh That Makes Sense"
I think that's true and once you feel like that's true.
I think you will be very happy
because you will understand what going on in this world and universe and everything.
"Mind over matter"
I had heard of it so many times in my life.
But this girl Ana from Mexico in her twenties
I found her to be quite a living example of this proverb.
I thought she definitely deserves something for this courage, for this will.
the souvenier I picked up from Himachal was perfect for her
And in return what she had for me was extremely precious
This is the Virgin of Guadalupe- makes a lot of miracles.
A lot of, almost all Mexicans believe in her.
My grandfather walked a lot of miles on his knees
Pray for her to bless his baby to be a boy
So my dad gave me this image of the Virgin of Guadlupe.
I feel like I can pass it on to somebody else
and take care of somebody else
And I hope it brings you happiness and you find your own answers.
Here is Rishikesh along the banks of River Ganga,
I found many new insights on happiness.
It looks like the holy river Ganga still has a lot to teach me
So I am going to go with the Flow
Next Stop – Varanasi
Entering Varanasi is like getting lost in a colourful painting
there are hundreds of things that will pull you towards them
Call it what you want – Varanasi, Benaras or Kashi...
From what is known to us this city is more than 6000 years old
Eating dead bodies is possible in Benaras
The Agoris use the human skull as their plate to eat human flesh
This bone?
You have made a chillum (pipe) out of a human bone?
Yes Is this real?
Ofcourse it is real.
Some have problems with friends,
Problems with girlfriend
Problems with the world
Problems with a guy
Problems with a girl
Problems to find food
A lot of problems
Life is full of problems
People feel a sense of peace and calm when they visit him (Agori)
I am just happy that I will earn $4-5 a day and use it to feed my family
Now I start walking from the ghats and feel like having some Bhaang.
And as soon as I start walking – I spot a shop selling Bhaang
wouldn't I be the happiest guy?
When your income is minimal. How can you find happiness?
I cut a dead body into 108 pieces.
I read out mantras and offer some flesh to the fire.
After this all problems are solved.
After consuming Bhaang you will not just find Khushi
you will also find Pushpa and Anjali. (all names of Indian girls).
Try it once and you will know what I am talking about.
After death- you don't know where the soul is going to go.
It won't hang around in your dead body.
Your body will be dirt and after burning will become ash.
I am lord Shiva.
You get most happy when you are in temples.
Because we share what is in our minds with God.
God is made out of Stone – He won't ever counter your feelings.
You need a lot of patience to explore this city... its abundant!
But something that comes like a quintessential tip when you go to Varanasi
is to witness the Ganga aarti.
It's that facet of Kashi that will engulf your mind, body and soul!
When I saw the Ganga Aarti for the first time,
I was moved to tears. It felt good.
The first time I performed the Aarti I was scared
Scared to face the crowd,
Wasn't sure if I was doing it right because it has to be synchronised.
I have been doing the aarti for the last 5-6 years.
I see a sense of happiness on the faces of all the people who comes here
They are moved to tears of Happiness.
You actually have tears in your eyes.
When I saw it for the first time – I had the same reaction
I actually met someone who belongs to the family
who has been organizing the Ganga aarti more than 25 years now.
There are a lot of people of Benaras who do their jobs the whole day,
But at the end of the day – without fail come here to watch and seek blessings during the Ganga Aarti
Most of these people come from 5-7 kms away from here
We asked them what is it that brings you here everyday?
Their answer was – the tiredness of the entire day vanishes,
We regain our energy for the next day and go back.
We feel like we can't live without doing this.
In life, I think you will be happy only if you know your inner self
If you recognize yourself properly and act according to what your heart truly seeks,
you will definitely find happiness.
When I was in Rishikesh, I met this girl who was from Mexico
She gave me the portriat of the God that she believed in,
this potrait has been with her since her childhood and I want to give this to you as the happiness souvenir because I think here in Benaras,
since you are involved with all the public welfare causes, you are the most deserving of this.
I feel extremely happy.
Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian… everyone believes in the creator
I also want to give you something that is very precious to me
I want to give you the picture of the first Ganga aarti that was organised by late Satyendra Misra ji
When we look at it, we get inspired, we feel happy
I am going to pass it on to you, hoping that it will get you your happiness.
When I was leaving for this search and now even when I am on it
so many times people have questioned my need to wander.
One such wanderer who left his kingdom
his princely life for his enlightenment was King Siddharth.
It was at my next destination that Siddharth became Gautam Buddha.
I have reached Bodh Gaya.
As mandatory as it seemed to talk to a holy priest in this city
nothing and no one looked as interesting as this guy.
When I started speaking to him, I realised that I didn't need to ask him a lot of questions
Somehow, he just went on answering all my questions by himself.
Have you always been in Bodh Gaya?
Yes, crazily I don't know how I reached here
But once I was here I was made a Sadhu
MADE a sadhu?
Yes… I think so…
because I didn't ever think that I would be like this
in the initial days, I didn't know what I was eating, what I was drinking, where am I going..
Suddenly one day I met this Sadhu
who I consider as my Guru today
Sadhu ji, what is your name?
My guru gave me this very short name
'Kalp mochan anand bajr swami muni'
Muni is the title and it comprises of 5 names
If you stop thinking about self, you feel closer to God.
You people are also trying to find the same thing
just now when you said, how will I find happiness
Happiness means contentment
and we sadhus are at the zenith of contentment
at the top of all sorts of contentment
Overthinking and stressing over menial things is dragging us all closer to our death beds.
And for us.. we don't have to worry that how will we source food,
how will we source water, how will we source clothes, everything is being magically sent to us in some or the other way
so you automatically feel at peace.
After listening to whatever he said
it felt like he is so clear about the fundamentals of life
right, wrong.. good, bad…truth, lie… he had just the right answer for everything.
And when I asked him What is happiness… He gave a similar kind of reply
Sadness and happiness are two brothers
Happiness, naturally is the older one
and sadness is the little one
The way waves flow in an ocean, the same way happiness and sadness operate together for us humans
what we feel more is pain, sadness.
because If we don't feel the pain, then who will call out to God
But imagine this
if you have been given sadness and you embrace it and dont cry about it
then happiness will come to you automatically because he is the elder one
If you love the little brother, the elder one will love you automatically
The question that you've asked me is a question of belief
But if I were to summarise it, it goes like this...
Whatever you wish and you desire, if you get it
Then there is no other person happier than you in the entire universe
The moment you think something and its not going according to your plans
Its getting stuck. that's sadness
What is happiness?
whatever you think… if it happens easily… then there is no bigger happiness
What if I think of something wrong?
Ohh but why are you thinking wrong… then its your fault!
We humans are selfish, we always think good for ourselves
If we deliberately think something bad, then we are doomed
Sadhu ji, thank you so much for giving us your time
Just for this much you are saying thank you…. Ram Ram
You are the coolest baba that I have met
Really… Ram Ram
Will I get happiness here?
Definitely
Traversing through the banks of Ganga
Crossing Rishikesh, Varanasi and reaching Bodh gaya finally,
today I have successful checked 3 more states in my list
next in line is the gateway to the northeast.
It's that part of the country that I know of very less
that I have heard of very less and therefore my need to explore it is even more.
Jacket on... fingers crossed... I am going to Sikkim
