Hello everybody my name is Raxef, and today I want to talk with you about the Mythic Dungeon
Invitational.
Now, what exactly is that?
Well, a couple days ago Blizzard made the announcement that they are going to be hosting
a global competition where teams can come together and compete to figure out who is
the champion of the Mythic Plus Dungeon.
Now starting July 25th to August 8th, teams of players are going to be able to push Mythic
Dungeons as hard and as fast as they can to get the highest scores and the highest possible
level of keystones.
At the end of that two week period they are going to be submitting their scores for their
top five dungeons to Blizzard.
Now Blizzard is going to be sorting through all of this data and picking eight teams of
five players from the four major regions, which are the Americas, Europe, China, and
Asia-Pacific.
Now what these thirty-two teams are going to be doing is come mid-September they are
going to be competing within their own regions across two weekends with one day for each
of those weekends dedicated to that particular region.
So for the first weekend in that mid-September match up is gonna be China and Asia-Pacific.
With the second weekend it's gonna be America and then Europe for that final day.
Now how are these playoffs are gonna be working?
It's basically a single-elimination bracket in a best-of-three rounds.
Now what is a round?
Basically, when the two teams go head-to-head Blizzard is gonna be picking a Mythic Dungeon
for those two teams to run at the same time, and whichever team can complete that dungeon
the fastest wins that round.
Now this single-elimination bracket is going to continue until their are eight teams left;
two teams from each of the four major regions.
Now once we have those eight teams, there's going to be a Finals in late-September, which
happens over one weekend.
It's going to be the same format as the Playoffs with that single-elimination bracket, however
instead of it being inter-regional, it's going to be cross-region.
So you're gonna have America versus China, and you're gonna have Europe versus Asia-Pacific
and so on and so forth, and this going to continue until we at last have our winner!
Now what is the prize for this competition?
Well, Blizzard has announced so far that there is gonna be a $100,000 prize pool, split between
the top three teams, with first place receiving $50,000.
So that comes out to $10,000 for each player.
So that pretty much sums up what the competition is in general, but now I kinda wanna take
a bit of a deeper look, see who this competition might be aimed at, what kind of players are
gonna be drawn towards it, and I feel like the first impression that a lot of people
might have is "well, couldn't it just be a group of players or multiple groups of
players from guilds like Method or Alpha who are pushing the bleeding edge of Mythic content?
Who have funneled all of that high-end gear to their best players; won't they have the
advantage that pretty much very very very few members of the World of Warcraft population
have."
I mean I think it's something like less than 1% of the players are pushing Mythic Dungeons
to the same level of those world first guilds are.
That's an interesting point.
You know of course gear is very very important.
You have certain DPS requirements that you need to meet.
You have certain healing requirements that you need to meet.
You know, you need to be at a certain level of health in order to survive some abilities,
particularly as you get higher and higher and higher into these Mythic Plus Dungeons.
Now what's interesting about that is even though there are some guilds that of course
have this bleeding edge armor, they might not necessarily have the skills for Mythic
Plus Dungeons.
Now of course they are skilled players.
I mean you don't get to be a World First guild like Method without being a skilled
player.
However, they might not necessarily have the skills for Mythic Plus Dungeons.
I know that there are groups of players who aren't necessarily Mythic Raiders, however
they pride themselves on running Mythic Plus dungeons very very frequently.
They know how these dungeons work.
They have all of the mechanics down; not just the basic mechanics of the mobs and the bosses,
but also with the added difficulties of the various levels of keystones.
These particular players; they might not necessarily have the best gear, but they know by heart
how these fights go, how they should be approached, and how they can survive and eventually complete
the dungeon.
And what I really really like about this particular competition is I feel like it's gonna bring
out a mix of those kinds of players from the woodwork.
I don't believe anything has been announced by Method or Alpha or any of these top guilds
saying: "Hey we have this roster of five people and they're gonna be representing Method going
into this competition."
I don't think any official announcement like that has been made yet, but I wouldn't be
surprised if something like that was gonna happen in the near future.
Y'know keep in mind that this competition starts just two weeks away.
So I think y'know it's a very good chance that those world first players are gonna be
competing, but I think we're gonna see a lot of unknowns that normally wouldn't draw a
lot of attention, and they're gonna be coming out of the woodwork, like I said, and really
be able to represent their regions during this competition.
Now moving on, overall what are my thoughts about this particular event?
I think it's really really great that Blizzard is taking this step into kind of merging esports
with PVE.
I mean pretty much all esports, for the most part, are based around player versus player
games, you know?
You have Overwatch, you have DOTA, League of Legends, Starcraft, Hearhstone.
You name it.
I mean pretty much everything is PVP.
You have things like speed runs, you know?
Games Done Quick and things like that, but they're not really held in as high of regard
or given as much publicity as these PVP events.
What Blizzard is doing here, for really the first time is legitimizing and incentivizing
success in a player versus environment realm.
So I think with this relatively small prize pool of $100,000, y'know $10,000 per person
that certainly isn't anything to laugh at if you're in first place, but overall it's
a relatively small prize pool, particularly for a competition that's being put on by Blizzard
themselves.
But given the small prize pool, I think it's more of like a test run for Blizzard to see
okay what exactly are people's reactions gonna be?
How much support can we draw for this?
And I think it's really really great.
I mean already across Reddit people are really really happy about this.
Some people are a little bit sad that Blizzard is kind of not putting as much emphasis on
PVP, and some people are feeling a bit left out of that, but with the direction that World
of Warcraft is going, I do feel like it is more of a PVE game, and that Blizzard should
really be focusing on making the PVE as the forefront of what your experience can be.
I'm not knocking PVP.
I know plenty of people, I have many friends who love PVP in World of Warcraft, but I just
don't think that the game itself lends itself that well to PVP.
And at the end of the day, it really is awesome.
As someone who does a lot of raiding and PVE content in general, it's really great to see
Blizzard, like I said, legitimizing PVE.
You know, yeah we have this world first race every time a new raid comes out, but that's
really only important to arguably a small percentage of the playerbase, and it's cool
to hear about "Oh, you know, Method got world first Avatar and this was their strat," but
you can't really watch it.
It's more of just kind of playing a waiting game and figuring out "Okay, well I guess
we're gonna need to wait."
Like now for Kil'jaeden.
It's like yeah, okay.
A couple of guilds are on Kil'jaeden and it's great.
Y'know we get to see which team comes first, but at the end of the day it's just a waiting
game without really much update about what's going on because many many guilds keep their
tactics a secret during this time in the race.
So I think the fact that Blizzard wants to shine more of a light on PVE as something
that you really can spectate; I think the Mythic Plus Dungeons are a really really great
way to do that.
It'll be really interesting to see how spectating that works.
If they're just gonna be taking the POV of a player or if there's gonna be some specially-built
spectator mode built in, although I think that's a bit unlikely.
But overall it's really great that they're bringing Mythic Plus,. which I think is a
great format because you can make it as hard as you possibly can, and there will come a
breaking point where just people cannot complete these dungeons, so this is gonna be an actual
real test of skill across the regions to figure out who are the best players in this particular
format.
Y'know it only takes maybe ten-fifteen minutes to run a Mythic Plus Raid depending on the
length of it and the difficulty of it.
Of course you have that time limit, but there are gonna people who are so great that they're
just blazing through that time limit until it gets to those really really insane difficult
levels.
So overall I am really really really excited for the Mythic Dungeon Invitational.
It's open to everyone as well.
You don't need to be in a Mythic Plus Raiding Guild or you don't need to have been a player
for X amount of time.
Y'know any five random people could just come together and form a group and have a chance
to compete, which I think is really really cool.
It hearkens to the Overwatch League scenario, where yes of course there are gonna be those
people who are in the higher levels, the esports pros who are gonna have a bit of an advantage,
but y'know if you are able to show up and show your chops with your team of other four
players and show that you really can exhibit a mastery of these dungeons like nobody else
can, then you absolutely deserve a seat at the table as one of the best players in this
format.
So I'm sure some more details are going to be released as we get close and closer to
the uh to the to the two week sort of uhh the two week Proving Grounds I believe is
what they're calling it.
In this two week Proving Grounds area I'm sure more announcements will come, and then
of course in the Playoffs with the thirty-two teams and then of course of Finals with the
final eight.
So I'm of course gonna be covering more of that as we get closer and closer, but overall
I think this is a wonderful move by Blizzard.
Y'know they should have done this a long time ago, and finally we're seeing some traction
in legitimizing PVE play in World of Warcraft.
I am absolutely all for that.
So y'know if you have some thoughts about it then be sure to leave it in the comment
section down below.
You know maybe you love this direction that Blizzard's taking.
Maybe you are one of those hardcore PVPers and you think that Blizzard should really
just be pushing more of their chips towards PVP in World of Warcraft.
Or maybe you just don't really care.
You know maybe I'm just kind of biased since I am uh not a hardcore raider, but I do pay
attention to things like the world first race, and I wish that it was just a little bit more
accessible.
But maybe to the average World of Warcraft player this type of competition won't really
hold much excitement or interest.
But like I said, y'know, if you agree with me or disagree with me leave me a comment
in the section down below.
