Hi everybody! I'm super excited for today's video. Thank you so much for joining me!
(upbeat music intro)
As I spoke about in my previous video, this is a new series in
which I hope we can be more interactive in tackling and organizing project in
our own life, share our successes, share our tips, and basically support each other.
I've been a fan of organizing pretty much my whole life so I'm so
excited to be able to share my enthusiasm, my tips and my strategies
with you in hopes that it can help you out.
I have made a little checklist here.
That I'm going to link in the description below. Feel free to click on that link
and download this for you to keep. We'll be going through it for today's project.
One of the principles I really want to talk about when we talk about organizing
is that it doesn't have to be complicated and it doesn't have to be
expensive. I know it can feel daunting if you feel overwhelmed by the amount of
things that you have to sort through or you don't have a lot of space to do it. I
think the most important thing is that if you have the will and the
determination and the courage to tackle it, you will be successful. And this relates to what I call Step One.
When I'm tackling an organizing project I first
envision my end goal. Now I know that might sound oversimplified but I really
want you to try and take your mental place to envisioning how you will
function in or with this organized space, with these belongings. In short, what do
you want this space, this drawer, these shelves, to look like when you're done?
Take a moment and think about that, jot it down, help it formulate maybe your process.
Okay now we're ready to dig in. Now today, for me, for my project, I
want to organize this game bench. This is a bench that my husband and I bought
several years ago to Ikea and it houses all of our games. We like to play games.
We're very competitive. Unfortunately though, we've accumulated
so many games they don't fit functionally in this space. Now this
particular project illustrates what I think a lot of people struggle with and
it's really a binary condition of organizing. Either you have too much
stuff for the space that you have or you don't have enough space to fill what you
need. And it's figuring out what your angle or what your options are
will help you figure out the strategy for solving your problems. I don't have
any other space in house where I can have our games. I need to make this work.
And because I have more games than I have space I'm going to have to
prioritize. I have a box here and I'm basically going to use this box as a
place to put the lower priority games and I will store this in our shed or our
garage. That way we still have them if we want them and maybe sometime down the
road we will end up donating them. With that said, let's head to Step 2: Clear your target space.
Now this could be the most scary part in an organizing project.
because as I put on this sheet, it's going to get worse before it gets better.
I'm a strong advocate for when you're tackling an organizing project you need
to clear the space. You need to empty out the drawer fully, you need to
clear out the room, or at least the section of the room, you need to empty that
closet. And that can get kind of chaotic and overwhelming at first. But if you see
the steps through that I suggest, it will be okay and I think you'll find it's the
most efficient way to really tackle all your stuff. So that's what we're going to do now.
(music plays)
Okay so once you have everything clear onto space, then I suggest you sort
like items together. So here I have my board games and then I have all my kind
of playing cards, cribbage boards, and miscellaneous, MadLibs, and some other miscellaneous items here.
Okay, so now here this is where it gets to be the fun part: putting things away.
So again part of my end goal and vision for this drawer is that I can easily pull out games to play with and put
them back easily without having the whole drawer implode.
So I need to think about some strategies that can help make that happen.
Because the depth and the dimensions and the awkwardness of this drawer, stacking is not a good idea I
don't want to have to pull out to get to what's at the bottom of the pile. So for
the board game boxes I go for an approach of filing them vertically.
Now here is an example where we have two Scrabble boards. I don't need two Scrabble
boards in this drawer. So I'm going to stick with the newer one and put the
older ones in storage.
Now these are actually just cards so I don't know if I
need a whole big bulky box...
See look at that-- look at how much waste there is.
So I'm going to actually take these out of the box, because this is just taking up a
lot of space that I don't need for it to be taking up.
Hey Little Man.
Hey! You want to help mommy organize? This is Alton everybody, if you haven't met him yet.
This is our almost four year old golden retriever, fur-son...
Woof! Yeah, okay.
Go get some water buddy. Go get some water.
Using plastic baggy's I think is a prime example of where you can take ordinary
things from around your house and utilize them for an organizational purpose.
(music plays)
I don't know if you can kind of tell but because this is a deeper drawer, one of the
things I'm doing is I'm putting things away vertically and not horizontally because
they're tall enough-- the drawer is tall enough to let me do that.
And it's still quick access.
And there you have it folks. A nice, neatly organized, game bench,
(sounds of kids cheering)
where I can get to everything easily, without having it collapse in on itself.
Well that's it for today's video guys. I hope you enjoyed it. I hope that you have done
as I suggested and organized along with me, pausing the video at every step and I'd
love you how about your project, your success, what have you tackled? Maybe take
a before picture and after picture. Thanks again so much for watching.
Please give this video a thumbs up if you liked it. Subscribe if you're enjoying it. I'm
going to be doing more of these kind of videos and check out what other videos I
have on my channel. Lots of different stuff. Also don't forget you can download this
link in the description below. Take care guys. Have a good one! Bye
