A Better Way to Log, Format & Color a String in Unity with Unity-Spice 1.0 [Unity] - Duration: 6:32.

Hello Ace

This is RetroTK2 and today you'll get to see exactly what Unity-Spice is all about

If you remember from the last video...

The card is on your screen now in case you missed that Ace

I showed you how to get Unity-Spice for free, but I didn't get a chance to tell you what it is and more importantly what it can do for you

You should hopefully have Unity-Spice downloaded Ace, but in case you haven't, feel free to click the link in the description down below

Now that all that is out of the way, let's get stuck in...

Open up an existing Unity project or create a brand new one Ace

With our project open, navigate to the location you saved Unity-Spice

Double click on it and a dialog box should appear in Unity asking you to import the package

Click "Import"

And with any luck, the package should import without any problems Ace

If you do get any compiler errors, specifically because of the Unity-Spice import...

I'll have to get a better bug reporting system later on down the line Ace, but for now this low tech method will suffice

Ok great, you've imported Unity-Spice into your project and you should hopefully see the "Examples" folder

The scenes here show case all the unique usages of the Spice package and will show you how to use all of its features

Now features are all well and good Ace, but they really only matter if they offer some sort of benefit

The main benefit of this version of Unity-Spice, and indeed the main benefit of all future versions of it is time

Unity-Spice will save you hours of development time Ace, and with this version we are focusing on debugging

Specifically logging

Firstly, let's have a look at the main feature of this release, the Logging extensions

Open up the "Logging-Example" scene and press the play button

And immediately you'll see the log is filled with messages from the example script

Nothing too crazy here Ace, though I suppose the colored text in the console might be a bit new to you, since I don't believe we've went over that in any of the Unity tutorials thus far

But on the whole, nothing to strange going here

Ah, but there is Ace

If we jump into the "LoggingExample" script you'll see that our log calls aren't at all like anything we've done before

Here we're declaring a string, with whatever message we want to log and then we're calling an extension method

Which then goes and calls the standard Unity Debug.Log("") method that we all know and love

I'll be going over extension methods at some point in my c# series Ace, so be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss out on that

If you're a more advanced Unity user, you'll probably be aware of Unity's 'ILogger' interface

This version of Spice doesn't implement this feature Ace, but future versions will, I promise

Now while semantically the Log extensions are nicer than the standard "Debug.Log" methods, you probably won't be getting too excited about them on there own...

Ah but Ace, these extensions allow for greater string formatting...

If you take a look at the lines below our simple log calls, you'll see a much more advanced look at this in action

Here I want to log the value of the int 'i'

Now the standard way to do this would be to use the "Debug.Log" method, and then add the 'i' value to our string

Not exactly the best way to do this Ace, and if you've never seen this in C# before, I'll be going over this in the C# series too

The better way to do this is to use the "string.format" method

This too shall be covered in the C# series...

Yes indeed, there is still quite a bit to cover in that particular series Ace, I shall get to it I promise

So here I can type out: "Debug.Log(string.Format("my int = {0}", i));"

This method is better in terms of performance Ace, but don't you find it a little difficult to read?

Well the Spice equivalent is about half the size, uses the same method under the hood, and in my opinion is much easier to read

The only thing that the standard method has over it is the nice green highlighting for the formatted strings, but I'd personally say it's a small price to pay

Now the other two examples are even more complex Ace

Here we're logging and formatting just like before, but now we're also adding color to our logs

The standard way to do this is to add color markup tags to your log strings

and with this you can reference the standard Unity colors, that's the "red", "blue", "green", ecetra Ace...

Or you can use the hexadecimal notation instead

Now, these are very basic strings Ace, just "RED" and "WHITE", but look at how complicated these are already

Not nice at all

With the Spice "color" extension method, we make it all a lot cleaner

I mean, it can still be little difficult to read, especially if you look at the method on the bottom line

But compared to the alternative Ace, you have to admit, its a lot nicer

And that about does it for this version of Unity-Spice, the only other thing to comment on is the other string extensions

We've already seen the "color" extension in action, but there are other examples too

If we pop into the "String-Extensions-Example" scene and click the play button, you'll see we get some logs

If we head into the "StringExtensionsExample" script, you'll see we've extensions for "color", "format" and "formatAndColor"

All stuff we've seen so far Ace

But if you look at the top line, you'll see we have a color extension method, that will convert a Unity Color to an Html string

This is the exact same extension method I use for the color strings Ace

So the color you pass to the method is then converted to the Hex color notation and added to the markup tags

I think that covers just about everything Ace

One final thing is to be careful with formatted strings, they can be a pain if you don't have the same number of objects as the ones that are referenced in the string itself

So here I'm deliberately logging out a formatted string, but I'm not passing an object to the log method

If we head back into Unity and run the game...

You'll see we're hit with a 'FormatException'

offered real world application skills.

Which I haven't found in a lot of other classes.

Not only do they offer a variety of classes,

but each one gives you real world practical applications.

- My current position is the marketing assistant

with the YMCA of the Fox Cities.

My job is kind of a little bit of everything

that encompasses communication.

I do a little PR.

I do some marketing.

I do some advertising.

I do some community relations.

The Professional Communications program

taught me everything that I do in my current job.

Every class that I took for

the Professional Communications program

I apply to my job today.

- I work with faculty and I work with private clients

to edit e-learning content.

Whether that means working with

a private company to determine

what their training needs are,

how best to deliver that,

and then writing the content for them,

or whether it means working with faculty here

or actually any of the 16 technical colleges

to develop specific e-learning for their classes.

(upbeat music)

I had the best of both worlds.

I could do the work on my time,

but yet all of the faculty here

were available if I ever needed to come

in and talk to someone about a class

or a question that I was having.

- I worked three days a week while

I was in the program.

It allowed me to, while my kids were

in school during the day I could work

on my school work.

When my kids got home I was done

and I get to be a mom.

When I had to go to work I got to go to work.

None of it felt overwhelming to me.

- My role at Thrivent Financial

here in Appleton is to manage

the internal communication channels.

Anyone who's considering a communications degree

I think might be surprised if they really look

at the breadth of opportunities for them.

Anything from technical writing,

helping write a new manual for a new machine,

for a new automobile, et cetera,

all the way through image and story development

through video, images, social media, consulting.

There is such a wide range of career options

that are really out there.

- I-CAR does collision repair technical training.

My role there is director of curriculum product development.

I have responsibility for a team

of about 25 people that put together training materials.

They need to be able to write an effective sentence

that convey a message.

The fact that it's changing every day.

Five or 10 years ago you would have never imagined

that a component of a business's professional communication

strategy would include things like Twitter and Facebook

and other social media outlets.

Today they are in some cases

the leading communication approach.

- Being a strong communications professional,

you are an incredible asset to any company.

- It's not a boring field.

It's always changing and it's not just one specific

thing that you're doing all the time

which is really exciting.

Hi everyone and welcome to my latest vlog. Today I'm going to talk to you

about how you can find your brand voice. Now what I mean when I talk about brand

voice is how it is that you communicate with your target audiences, how is it

that your PR effectively helps you create a voice that increases sales and

generates income for you. That is what PR is about and that's what I want to talk

to you about today. So my first tip in helping you find your brand voice is to

think about what it is you actually stand for.

What is it that you is your personal brand stands for and what is it that

your business brand stands for? So think about keywords that describe your brand

what goals you actually want to achieve, who your audience is, what field it is

that you work within. What does your audience like or dislike? What is it that

represents you and your business effectively? That is what we need to know.

In order for you to have a good brand voice your audience needs to know

instantly what it is you stand for, so I would recommend doing

an exercise where you pull together five to ten keywords to describe your

business and do a little bit of a brainstorming session to see where it is

you get to and think about maybe three key words in the end that describes you.

That will help you begin the process of creating your brand voice. So the

second point I'd like to discuss today is knowing your audience

Do you actually know your audience - what are their likes? What are their dislikes?

How do they like to be spoken to? What platforms do they use online? What kind

of content do they digest? Do they prefer to read online do they prefer to read

print? How is it that they like to be communicated with? Then you can start

creating a plan on how you can communicate effectively with them. Now in

terms of knowing you audience you need to know what tone of voice they use

what's their style, what it is that they want to learn about and through your PR

activity you can make sure that you create content that addresses those

issues. Knowing your audience is key - you need to know everything about them so

doing your research on this subject will help you do that. It could be that you,

you know, you get people involved, you ask your existing customers what is it

you actually want to hear about from me? or what is it that attracted you to our

company into purchase from us in the first place? Once you know that you can

create a brand voice which will help you replicate this process to potential

customers as well, so knowing your customers is definitely key. So my point

number three is understand the difference between your online voice and

your in-person voice

Now what I mean by that is I look online and I see such a disconnection with

brands between the way they are on Twitter, on social media, on their website

to what they are like in person. Now there are specific industries that

can be very guilty of this i.e. professional services. I often find

that in person the accountants I meet and the the lawyers I meet and financial

advisers are very lovely and very personable when I meet them in person,

but actually when I think about them or look at them up online or look at their

LinkedIn they're very stuffy, there's too much jargon, it's not easy for me as a

potential customer to relate to them and that is something that needs to stop. You

need to be consistent in your voice. If you have one unique brand voice

it is the same voice it is on Twitter as it is in a press release. It's the same

tone, it's the same feel, it's how you want your audience to feel after talking

to you needs to be the same and that is where the tip number one is going to

come into effect by thinking about what it is you actually stand for. So make

sure that your online voice and your offline voice are both the same - they

both need to be unique and representative of your brand. Tip number

four, which is my final tip, is to actually test your voice

Test it with your target audience, we really want to know what it is that they

want to hear from you. Keep testing what it is you stand for, how it's perceived

how it's reciprocated, what your potential customers do is a call to

action, based on what it is you're saying. Once you test this keep going and

going and going and test it every six months, every year, keep on top of that

and make sure your voice evolves alongside your industry, the needs of

your customers and your brand itself. So once you test, evolve just keep evolving

your brand voice that is how you're gonna stay connected to new audiences

whilst keeping existing audiences happy. And it's how to keep your PR and your

brand fresh. That is how it's going to work. So that was my four top tips on how to
