Waching daily Jul 2 2018

well we knew it was coming I guess it's finally here what's going

on guys It's your boy the Beast of Ecom and I am back with another video dropping

nothing but value bombs if this is the first time ever watching one of our

videos hello and welcome if it isn't it's nice

to see you again please do if you get some value like comment and of course

smash that subscribe button and hit the notification about as well so you stay

up to date with my latest videos because you do not want to miss out on any of my

upcoming content so I want to talk about this massive update that Facebook have

done recently which has completely changed the game for every single

advertiser on the platform now it doesn't matter if you do a Shopify drop

shipping if you are doing a niche store a general store a branded store selling

info products print-on-demand affiliate marketing it doesn't matter

this affects absolutely everyone so what is it I'm actually talking about well

Facebook have rolled out a new feature a transparency feature which allows

anybody to go onto any single fan page and see the adverts that they are

running yep so those dark posts you thought were hidden from everyone are

now officially unsure to the whole world now this was officially only available

in Canada they tested it out in Canada but now it's officially gone global

which means that anyone any one person any marketer anyone in the world can

click on any single fan page and just see the adverts that you're currently

running so before I actually talked about what this means for you as an

advertiser let me show you exactly how it works so you can get to grips with it

and of course start testing it out okay so let me quickly show you how this new

update actually works so you can get to grips with it as you can see I'm on the

Facebook page for pet ninja I think someone in the comments on one

of my videos said that they thought that pet ninja was my website unfortunately

your hundred-percent wrong so I thought I'd just use this as an example so as

you can see on the left hand side it will say a bunch of tabs and this one

here says info and now if you click on that that is load

and it says active ads from pet ninja now of course it's defaulted to United

Kingdom which is where I am but you can change that and as you scroll down a

little bit you can see all of the adverts that they're currently running

for the United Kingdom and if you click on that what you can do is of course

change it to anything in any country United States or you can click global

ads as well if we click on that we can scroll down we can have a look at all of

these products the creative and stuff like that now you can as well see the

engagement as well that is going on on the advert so if you actually click on

the video turn that down and if you click on it widescreen you can see here

now that the creative ok get yours here etc and you can see the amount of likes

it's got you can see the shares the amount of views and of course you can

see the comments as well so you can see the engagement you can see the advert

you can pretty much see everything that is out there so that is how it works

that is the new update let's have a conversation about it so now that you've

seen how it works what does this mean for you as an advertiser is it the end

of Shopify dropshipping is it gonna harm you brand you know what are the pros

what are the cons let's talk about it well the good thing of course is that

it's opened the playing field for everyone it's leveled the playing field

okay it means that you can now find products you pretty much have no excuse

to find products if you're relying just on dropship in you know you can go to

any single page ok click on that tab and find their winning products you can of

course see the engagement as well to see if it is something that is getting a

great reaction or not and you can basically just go to any single page and

find products which means you don't necessarily have to start relying on

those spy tools now remember that angle should always be if you are just

starting off with dropship in should be to build out a long-term sustainable

brand okay that's I do with my winners you want to be

testing stuff on your general store okay find those winners and I once you find

those winners break them out into a new store find a supplier okay brand them

yourself trade market copyright it and build it into a long-term sustainable

brand like I said that is what I do and that is what your goal should be to do -

now once you get to that point where you trade marking stuff and your copywriting

your logos and all those sorts of things it doesn't matter if people can see you

stuff anyway because at the end of the day you can just literally sue them if

they are taking your material now you are gonna build a massive brand loyalty

and be building an asset that of course you can sell in the later stages of the

business if you wanted to now drop shipping is still the easiest method to

get into e-commerce okay you don't need massive warehouses that you do with a

brand okay you don't need any sort of you know inventory so to speak to start

off with and again it the barriers to entry to drop shipping are so low that

again testing products and all those sorts of things you can literally do and

start making sales so again there's nothing wrong with drop shipping to

start off with now Willis up they actually kill drop shipping on Facebook

well let's talk about that for a minute just because you can see these products

working again you can see these creatives does not mean that you are

going to be able to recreate that success why just because you watch Bruce

Lee on TV in films does not mean you know karate so what do I mean by that

well you may be able to see the product you may be able to see the offer but

there's an important part missing which is the audience and the targeting a lot

of mentioned in a previous video okay you need those three things aligned to

be able to create success so you know you need the product you need the

audience and of course you need the offer so if you can see only two parts

of it you still missing a massive part now how many times have you seen a

winning product on Facebook and you think okay you know what I'm gonna give

this a test and you throw some money out and you find that you don't find that

it's a winner it don't bring you the sales I've done it and I know personally

that people watching this video have done it too that's because there's a few

different things that come into play that influence whether something

gonna be a winner or not and it's more than just a product just the audience

and just the offer things like ad account history relevancy scores quality

scores pixel data all of these things have an influence on whether something

is going to be a winner or not so remember just because you can see it

does not mean you are going to be able to recreate that success it's as simple

as that now another thing is you actually have to find these pages which

isn't as easy as it is of course if you're just doing dropship in these

dropshipping stores what they do is they hyper niche their pages which means if

they're selling cat products they'll send it on a cat page if they're selling

dog products they'll sell it on a dog page and they'll have all of these

different pages okay all running with different winners on so although you may

find one page that store may have you know another five to ten different pages

that may all have winners on so you might find one it doesn't mean you're

gonna find all of their winners now is this going to create competition with

your main products and your main winners who knows it may do it may not but

remember there's a lot of different things that come into play and if you

have winners right now I wouldn't start pulling your hair out thinking that

everyone else is going to recreate that success because like I said there's a

lot of different things that come into play into your product being a winner

over the next person now if you are the first to market you're gonna get the

lion's share anyway so if you are scared scale hard and scale fast but remember

there are a load of different things that come into play and if you have

something working on facebook nine times out of 10 Facebook will favor your

advert over the copycats because you were the first to market you have all of

those different things which are previously mentioned which is why your

advert is working also Facebook isn't the only traffic source if you are just

reliant like I mentioned in my other video on one traffic sauce then you are

in serious trouble don't just rely on Facebook yes it is

fantastic yes you can drive targeted traffic but remember there are loads of

different ways you can go out there and find traffic that are super

underutilized and probably a lot cheaper than Facebook for example Google AdWords

YouTube ad verse okay Pinterest adverse there's loaded different places that you

can use also ready verse there are lonely different places

that you can use okay that can bring you in targeted traffic as well as Facebook

now if you are super scared of this update and you don't want the world to

find winners first and foremost just get over it and secondly if you are that

scared and you want to take measures then just create more fan pages just

find a product and once that product is winning on that page then just create a

new page test products on a new page until you find a winner and then just

create a new one and test products on that and so on and so on and so on or

alternatively just ruin a turn of $1.00 adverts so that it fills up the whole

thing making it a little bit harder for people to find your winning products

again I wouldn't even bother with doing any of that okay the main thing is you

need to move towards a brand okay a sustainable brand which means that no

one can copy your stuff regardless that is where you ideally need to be now do I

think this update will kill dropshipping absolutely not and am I worried about it

absolutely not why because obviously of course I've got

branded stores that I'm working on and alternatively I'm a marketer who adapts

and survives it's as simple as that if you are not in this game okay as a

business person as a marketer okay as an entrepreneur you have to adapt and

survive there has been many changes with Facebook throughout the years okay CPC

is rise in you know CPM is rise in different changes algorithms all these

sorts of things okay if you are not in this game to adapt and survive then you

are not fit to be an entrepreneur it's as simple as that you roll with the

times and you keep moving that is the reason why we're consistent with our

producing results okay we adapt we survive because at the

end of the day there's nothing we can do to change it so all you can do is adapt

survive move and keep pushing it some people will absolutely love it some

people will absolutely hate it I'm pretty much indifferent it doesn't make

any difference whatsoever but just use it while it's here it's here it's here

to stay so use it utilize the tool while you can now of course if you got some

value from this video please do of course like comment

smash that subscribe button hit the notification bar as well see stay up to

date with my latest videos now I'd love to know your thoughts on this update

what do you think of it which side are you on do you absolutely love it

do you absolutely hate it are you indifferent what are your thoughts so

let me know in the comment section I'll be reading through them replying to them

and having a little bit of a discussion down below so make sure you comment down

below with your thoughts and what you think of this new update remember I have

got a free mastermind group click the link down below I'm in but the marketers

are in there we talked about in the simple ecommerce Shopify drop shipping

all helping each other grow if you want to reach out to me on a personal basis

best place is probably Instagram you'll pop up on the screen drop me a like drop

Selena Gomez and Meghan Markle Had a Flawless Twinning Moment You Might Have Missed - Duration: 2:22.

Selena Gomez and Meghan Markle Had a Flawless Twinning Moment You Might Have Missed

In Los Angeles on Sunday, Selena Gomez went to her first red carpet movie premiere in two years for Hotel Transylvania 3 — and, can I just say, she looked amazing in this two-piece Oscar de la Renta ensemble.

Sel's outfit consisted of a bustier crop top and high-waisted midi skirt with raw hems and she accessorized it with silver Tiffany & Co.

jewelry (worth a whopping of $21.5K!!!), a matching clutch, and embellished heels.

In case you're experiencing a little bit of déjà vu looking at the blue-and-white print of her outfit, that's because you saw it on none other than Meghan Markle in June.

The Duchess of Sussex wore the same exact pattern when she attended the wedding of Celia McCorquodale (i.e.

Prince Harry's cousin and Princess Diana's niece).

Meghan's dress, also by Oscar de la Renta, was more on the conservative side with its long sleeves, maxi skirt, and drop waist silhouette.

She paired it with a white fascinator for the formal occasion. It's the twinning moment I never knew I wanted, but I'm so glad it happened.

What's better than your two faves wearing matching outfits by the same designer?.

Maybe, like the rest of us, Selena saw Meghan's ensemble and wanted to channel royalty.

Either way, you can shop similar dresses below if you're digging this blue-and-white theme, like I am.

Tell Us: Are You Having Trouble Finding A Home To Buy?

Ten years after the Great Recession, a new housing crisis has developed in America.

In 2008, people were losing their homes.

Now, people who want to buy a home are being shut out of the market.

America's inventory of unsold homes is at its lowest level since 1999, according to the National Association of Realtors.

And that has all had a huge impact on prices and affordability.

In a series of upcoming stories, NPR and member station reporters will explore what's happening in the home market and why, and we'll look for solutions to this looming crisis.

You can tell us your story by filling out the form below.

Top 7 TV Presidents of All Time - Duration: 9:44.

- Nothing but respect (dynamic music)

for our favorite TV presidents.

Welcome to Gammaray.

- Oh God.

- [Woody] Independence Day is coming up

in these United States of America,

and so we thought it might be good time

for us to hold an official office debate--

- I should be president or something.

- [Woody] About which of the many fictional presidents

that have crossed our living room screens is our favorite.

Some are great, some are diabolical,

but they understand the privilege, the consequences,

the power of their words for good or ill.

First up at number seven,

we're starting with a curveball, Robert McAllister

from the short-lived WB series Jack and Bobby.

Oh, deep cut. (uplifting music)

Yes we know he was never technically president on screen

as the show's fascinating premise centered

around two brothers.

No, not like the Rick and Morty--

- [Rick] Two brothers. - [Woody] No, don't you do it!

- [Rick] And, then a meteor hit.

- [Woody] Go back, we're doing it.

We have serious things to do, okay,

a lot of presidents.

- [Rick] The moon comes crashing to Earth.

- [Woody] Oh, you, you cheeky editor,

putting that Rick and Morty thing

about two brothers in there.

(laughs)

Relevant for the kids.

(uplifting music)

The show's fascinating premise centered around two brothers,

one of whom would grow up to be the president.

While the first few episodes tried to keep you guessing,

it was eventually revealed that it would be

baby Percy Jackson to take on the Oval one day.

While technically the show didn't center

around the presidency itself, we wanted to give it credit

for tackling a larger philosophical theme

around the position.

Are leaders made, shaped and groomed

by their environment and upbringing, or are they born,

refining skills and behaviors

ingrained in their DNA somehow?

You be the judge.

We're on to number six.

At number six, we're going to continue

to avoid the actual job.

We're cowards.

We were surprised when we realized the post-presidency

was such a gravely underutilized dramatic premise.

Thus, we had to give some points

to Richard Graves from Graves.

- What?

- [Woody] The show is filled with endearing performances,

light comedy, and Nick Nolte

who takes on the frank, unrepentant character with delight.

- What a prick.

- [Woody] Freed from the need to be re-elected,

Graves can simply focus on doing what's right

and trying to correct the mistakes of his time in office

in a way that doesn't apologize for his beliefs

but acknowledges the failure of his choices.

Poignant.

For movies, there's also My Fellow American,

which has those two guys from Grumpy Old Men

and then there was um, uh, it's technically

not the president one,

but Bulworth is a fun one.

Check that out, Warren Beatty.

- Do you have any more of those little crispy crab cakes.

- [Woody] At number five, we're hitting the Oval Office,

but we're still avoiding the job.

Passing the buck, it's a president thing.

You get it. (somber music)

Both presidents on Scandal are kind of terrible presidents.

No really, they're very terrible presidents,

but we do have a special place in our heart

for Tony Goldwyn's Fitzgerald Grant.

Oh oh, Fitz, you emotional abuser.

You're the fucking worst.

While we have literally no idea what his policies are,

he makes for a great, diverse, romantic hero.

Heedless in his efforts to maintain his elicit romance,

the man invades a foreign country to save his mistress,

survives an assassination attempt, like you do,

frequently forgets about the existence

of his children, right,

and has probably had more sex than any other

on-screen presidents.

- I'm the leader of the free world. I do not sleep in.

- [Woody] We checked and that dude gets it in

with the quickness.

Like seriously it's no longer like the Oval Office,

it's freakin' pound town.

I don't think he bones that often in the Oval Office,

but check it out, I don't know. It's a sexy show.

Shonda Rhimes effectively turns the job into a great opera

and veers into the space so unapologetically

that despite the show growing more convoluted and absurd,

Fitz was always a fun president to watch.

At number four, let's talk about more shit presidents.

This time, not because they're spending too much time

getting busy, but because they're busy being evil dicks.

There's a few honorable mentions.

On Prison Break, Patricia Wettig's Caroline Reynolds

started as veep but after a Borgia-like poisoning

she upgraded to the president to be a memorable villain.

At least she has a spine,

unlike Gregory Itzin's Charles Logan from 24.

Oh my God, fuck that guy.

Who seemed to be decent and ready

to uphold David Palmer's legacy, but ended up

being complicit in his assassination,

inept at thwarting terrorists, and even guilty

of gaslighting his poor wife

when she figured out his machinations.

This dude sucked. (dramatic rhythmic music)

Oh, it's like Iago from Aladdin, but as like a human.

And, he's also a head of state, like oh just fucking die!

Anyways, the dude sucked.

In the end, there's no one who's more hated

by his constituents, and now the audience,

than the murderous, traitorous, insidious

Frank Underwood from House of Cards.

Going from a representative from South Carolina

to the White House by being a vile human being,

every time he's given the opportunity to reflect

the better nature of humanity or even the ideals

of the American experiment, he often just steamrolls

in the opposite direction.

He may be a calculated planner, but his ruthlessness

is often lacking when it comes to execution.

(laughs) It's a pun, he kills a person.

A couple people, actually.

Anyways, you should see the show.

The show makes us nervous about the realities

of rule under the dark side of the force.

In the end, without saying too much

about a show called House of Cards,

despite all the cruelty Underwood

put into this fictional world,

he may not even end up being the most fun to watch president

on the show in the end, but, you know, we'll see.

- We're just getting started.

(heavenly music) Could we talk

about good presidents now?

Can we?

Oh thank you. (somber music)

At number three, we wanted to give praise to those

who stepped into office utterly unprepared,

forced by extreme tragedy, and yet excelled.

Disqualified by being the president of Caprica

and not the United States, we really wanted to give the spot

to Mary McDonnell's Laura Rosalind of Battlestar Galactica,

who went from Secretary of Education

to the top job overnight.

And, on the backs of like billions of people who died

in a robotic, uh, you know, genocide, like you do.

She made some early mistakes in season one,

but eventually grew to be a skilled and principled leader

who never let the wandering tribes forget

the real thing they were fighting for,

the chemistry between Edward James Olmos

and Mary McDonnell.

Let's get to 'em cuddling.

(moving to rhythmic music)

It's like your parents.

You're really rooting for them.

It's cute, but you don't wanna see 'em have sex, you know.

But, since this is for US presidents,

we chose the next best candidate,

Tom Kirkman from Designated Survivor.

Stepping up to the plate and taking on the presidency

while never really having sought it

brings both of these characters a level of honor

and a level of drama others don't benefit from.

Sure, Kirkman is basically a nerdy Jack Bauer

forced to sit in the Oval, but that's part of the charm.

Like, you're just watching him being like, okay,

when is he gonna take off the glasses and punch some guy

and like demand to be like who ordered the attack?

Add to that both a personal and national crisis

for a man who was the Secretary of Housing yesterday

and now has to take on the top job

and it's a recipe for a compelling plot.

While the fate of Kirkman's presidency

is also keeping us in suspense, it's worth revisiting

his two years in office.

(upbeat electronic music)

At number two, we were genuinely surprised

by the number of comedic presidents there have been.

After his now iconic big screen presidency,

there was a charm and decidedly less aliens

to Bill Pullman's Dale Gilchrest

from the First Family sitcom 1600 Penn.

Back in 1985, Patty Duke's President Julia Mansfield

took on religion, race, politics, and sex

in a comedy far ahead of its time.

- You could open a boutique.

I'm President of the United States.

- [Woody] George C. Scott took on the office

back in the early days of Fox with Mr. President,

produced by Johnny Carson's production company.

The show was kind of a mess behind the scenes,

but it was entertaining while it lasted.

Oh man, there's The President, voiced by Keith David

in Rick and Morty after a giant head appears in the sky--

- Kill her.

With a demand.

- Show me what you got!

- [Woody] You know Rick and Morty.

Or there's Lisa Simpson's stint in the Oval Offce

cleaning up the budget crunch she inherited from

a I still can't believe they predicted it--

- To President Trump.

- [Woody] There, we got his name in it.

Can't wait to read the comments.

But, after all the votes were tallied,

our favorite comedic champion

is the shortest presidency in history.

She started out as vice president, but Veep's Selina Meyer

ascended to the top job after her predecessor resigned,

only to immediately start the next campaign cycle

and somehow end up with a tie in the electoral college,

which would eventually, and hilariously,

result in her losing her job.

- I'm fluent in bastard. (dramatic music)

- [Woody] Her identity, and, you know,

I was gonna say dignity but did she ever really have that?

- What are you talking?

I am furious!

- [Woody] And now, for the number one spot,

there's three candidates that really made a good run.

("America the Beautiful" by Samuel A. Ward)

First off was president Mackenzie Allen

from Commander in Chief.

Good choice!

The show only made it one season and like

almost all female presidents on TV

she wasn't elected but was another Veep

who took over the Oval after her predecessor died.

Seriously, is that how it always go

for every female president?

She was an Independent in a Republican government,

and despite both the dying chief and the current government

asking her to step down, she stuck with it.

Battling both an administration that didn't want her

and a shit ton of behind-the-scenes

real life production turmoil, I didn't know that,

Geena Davis delivered a memorable president

who tried to do the right thing

and deserves an honorable mention.

Honestly, we could make an entire list

out of the presidents on 24.

While we loved the sternness of Allison Taylor,

and even the utter incompetence of Wayne Palmer,

it was the show's first and longest running president,

David Palmer, played by Dennis Haysbert

that reigns above them all.

Nothing but respect for my fictional president.

He survived assassination as a candidate,

thanks, of course, to Jack Bauer, but then proceeded

to also get through an attempted coup,

another assassination attempt, a nuclear bomb,

and the twisted plots of his ex-wife Sherry

and, despite all that, still managed

to remain strong-willed, skilled,

and just an all-around decent and trustworthy man.

He wasn't perfect, but he was reliable, honorable,

and trying his best.

Let's all be honest, though.

Much like crackers are just a vehicle for a good cheese,

or tortilla chips are just a vehicle for guacamole,

this list is just a vehicle to talk about the true top spot,

a fictional man who has yet to be beaten for this position,

though we're open to someone, someday, doing so.

Do we have to say it?

We do. (dramatic uplifting music)

It's clearly The West Wing's Josiah Bartlet.

Raining down bible versus on bigots,

assuming unofficial father figure roles,

and otherwise holding his own with word after word

of Aaron Sorkin's witty dialogue,

Martin Sheen's stint as fake president was unwavering

in his idealistic principles.

While his presidency was marred with scandal,

assassination attempts, and the abduction of his daughter

in order to make good TV, his policy decisions

were full of tough calls with great reasons.

We'd like to believe that if America elected

a fictional president, they'd elect Jed Bartlet.

That's it for us this week, folks.

Let us know what your thoughts are in the comments.

Like, subscribe, do all the things

and we'll see you all next week.

I'm Woody Zandorf.

Enjoy your national holiday if you live in America.

And, if not, enjoy your Wednesday.

Paras: The Mushroom Pokemon - Got A Minute? - Duration: 0:58.

Destined for disappointment, Paras are corrupted by mushrooms and sport some rather unsightly

freckles.

But while the fungus looks fresher than their foreheads, those specked demons sap nutrients

from Paras and issue them orders to seek and extract juices from the trunks of trees: making

for far worse blemishes.

These bugs are built well for this sort of servitude, though, thanks in part to the tiny

hand spikes they use for digging and puncturing roots.

As their name and conduct suggests, the relationship between Paras and the mushrooms is a bit parasitic.

No matter how much they consume, the fungus drains the nutrients and leaves them with

only what they need to sustain their growth.

There's no escape from this fate either.

As soon as they hatch, Paras are subjected to spores that consistently manifest as fungal

pairs on their backs.

No one's thought to put an end to this process, though, because it's said that ingesting the

mushrooms like medicine can extend one's life.

The suffering of an entire species is a small price to pay for a few more minutes of youth

after all!

Relationship - What You Should Know - Duration: 1:12.

okay so there are two types of relationships right there's the nourishing

relationship and there's the toxic relationship so the nourishing

relationship is one that motivates you they inspire you, they literally bring

out the best in you. now the toxic relationship, these are

people who always find faults in everything that you do they criticize

everything they're just negative just negative energy you want to get rid of

these people. like it's not good for your health They'll give you high blood

pressure man so what I want you to do is don't take their foolishness don't take the

foolishness why do people do it they're not good for you walk away because it's

already hard enough just for us to achieve our goals and it takes a lot of

physical mental and emotional energy just to get to where we need to go so

what I want you to ask yourself is this relationship ask yourself what kind of

person am I becoming because of my relationship?

Am I becoming a better person? and a better individual?

Are they good for me?

the back of the jello box so I have a packet of lime jello and the first

thing you want to do is add 1 cup of boiling water when I was a little girl I

hated jello because it was thick and filmy and disgusting and then I realized

as the years went on my mom was just making it all wrong

she didn't dissolve the jello and so it would get that thick film that's really

disgusting so you wouldn't assume that you'd need a tip for making jello but

that would be it completely dissolve and whisk in that jello so that your kids

don't hate you for the rest of your life or just your jello maybe they don't hate

you now that it's completely dissolved in that boiling water you can go ahead

and add your cup of cold water to it and just keep mixing it it looks good it

smells like lime green jello it looks like blobby's color we're good to go

so I went ahead and I sprayed this lightly with some cooking spray so that

way they can just slide right on out we're gonna just pour it into these

molds now that they're filled are just gonna be refrigerated until they set

which is going to take probably anywhere from about an hour to two hours and then

we'll just slide them out and we'll have our Hotel Transylvania jello blobbies so

once the jello blobbies have completely set to get them out of the mold we're

just gonna dip them in hot water once they are loosening they're just gonna

pop right out and look we have our jello blobbies and you're just gonna set in

here

so once the eyes are on they look just like blobby from Hotel Transylvania 1 2

& 3 guys thanks for watching I'll see you next time make sure to subscribe to

my youtube channel or I make cooking so much fun

Brought to You by Satan Kickstarter - Duration: 1:17.

Hi, I'm Holly.

And I'm raising money for a project called Brought to You by Satan.

It's a short film that I have written and that I'm going to direct.

It is based on a true story from my life, and it is funny, and it's dark, and it's very

human, and it's grappling with some questions that truly haunt me personally.

I'm going to be filing this back on my home turf of Chicago, and I've put together a great

team of Chicago crew, and actors, but all of those gaffers and lighting and all of that

cost a lot of money.

So I'm raising dough for this because I really believe in this project, I really want to

develop my talent as a director, and I want get this film into festivals so that people

see it.

And I personally think that the live action short category of the Academy Awards is in

desperate need of comedies.

So let's shoot the moon and imagine that I'm gonna win an Oscar and when I do, I will thank

you.

So thank you for listening and for considering donating, I really really appreciate it from

the bottom of this devilish little heart of mine.

Thanks.

Why Does Nature Make You Feel Better? - Duration: 5:45.

[♪ INTRO ]

It's probably no surprise that nature is beneficial to our mental health.

From hitting the beach, to taking a long stroll through the park, multiple studies have shown

that there's something about nature that helps us feel happier, more focused, or just generally better.

But why that happens is trickier to figure out.

From what psychologists can tell, though, it's not just about getting in some sunshine

and Vitamin D. Instead, it might have to do with our sense of belonging.

The idea that nature is healing isn't a new one, and exposure to natural environments

has been an important part of mental health treatments for a long time.

As early as the Middle Ages, monasteries for those with mental illnesses created so-called

restorative gardens.

And in the 1800s, people designing mental hospitals would try and make sure their buildings

were surrounded by acres of natural land.

So far, modern research really supports this idea, too.

Studies have shown that being exposed to nature — whether it's a wilderness preserve or

a tree-lined city street — can improve wellbeing in a bunch of ways, both in those with and

without clinical conditions.

For example, a 2011 meta-analysis looked at studies involving a total of almost 850 participants

— mostly students.

It found that exercising in a natural environment resulted in higher feelings of revitalization

than doing the same exercise indoors.

And another study from 2012 found that walking through nature for 50 minutes provided a mood

boost and other cognitive benefits for twenty participants with depression.

There's also evidence to suggest that those with schizophrenia, ADHD, and a whole host

of other illnesses experience similar benefits from just taking in a little scenery.

So far, there are several factors that have been floated around as possible explanations for this.

One is that nature allows us to recover from stress and attention fatigue.

This is the idea that urban environments have too many things competing for our attention.

Other studies suggest that nature offers exercise opportunities, facilitation of social interaction

and development, and opportunities for personal development in general.

But a lot of these factors haven't been investigated in rigorous depth.

They also don't really explain the mechanisms of how we gain psychological benefits just

from existing in nature, rather than running around in nature, chilling with friends with

nature.

In fact, most research on the subject seems to describe the mechanisms as 'elusive'.

Which is psychologist speak for, "We dunno.

We're workin' on it."

Still, that doesn't mean we don't have a hypotheses or two.

Some researchers argue that these positive effects, at least in part, come about because

of an increased sense of connectedness to the natural world.

One significant experiment about this was published in 2009 in Environment and Behavior,

and it looked at the effect of exposure to nature on mood and problem solving.

In this study, 76 students were asked to complete questionnaires on mood, along with the Connectedness

with Nature Scale – or CNS – which measures pretty much what the name implies.

It asks participants to rate how they feel about some vaguely hippy-ish stuff, like 'Right

now I'm feeling a sense of oneness with the natural world'.

Or 'I'm feeling like the natural world is a community to which I belong'.

After rating 13 of those peace and love statements, the students were split into two groups, and

bundled onto buses for a field trip.

They took a 20-minute drive to either a nature reserve or a downtown parking lot.

Then, they spent around 15 minutes silently walking, sitting, and taking in the scenery

before filling out those questionnaires again.

The results showed that participants who went to the nature reserve reported significantly

more of a mood boost from their trip.

Their feelings of being connected to nature were also higher than those who took a stroll

in the parking lot.

Now, this in itself isn't massively surprising.

You can imagine it's probably hard to feel at one with the universe standing on a stretch

of concrete.

What was more interesting is that the CNS survey results seemed to mediate the effects

of the environment.

More specifically, when people reported that they felt part of nature, their mood boost

tended to be bigger.

So it wasn't just about seeing nature; it was about feeling like they are part of it.

The scientists behind this experiment argue that it's that sense of connectedness that

causes all those positive benefits.

And they cite something called the biophilia hypothesis as a possible mechanism for this.

The hypothesis theorizes that since, evolutionarily speaking, we're used living in natural environments,

we all have some innate urge to seek out nature.

The researchers suggest that we need to see ourselves as part of it, belonging to the

same group as the various plant and wildlife species we share our planet with.

It can be hard to prove evolutionary hypotheses like this, especially when they're as abstract

as this one.

But the concept that we need to belong to groups to stay mentally healthy is one of

the main principles of social psychology research.

In fact, it's such an important concept that having a sense of belonging with other

people is seen as a core human need in some models.

Not having this sense of belonging can lead to things like lowered immune response, and

poorer sleep quality.

And, conveniently, those are exactly the kind of functions researchers have seen improve

when we're exposed to natural environments.

So it's not that huge of a stretch to think that maybe that need to feel like we belong

extends beyond human interactions, to seeing ourselves as part of the wider ecosystem on

our planet.

It's a plausible idea, and the results of this study certainly support it.

But like with a lot of other big ideas, it would help to have more research to be sure.

If nothing else, though, studies do suggest that time in nature is really good for you.

So even if we don't totally know why, it's probably worth visiting your local park sometime.

Your brain — and your mood — will thank you.
