My name is Dwayne Simmons, and my position is chair and professor of biology at Baylor.

My research is concerned with how neurons develop their wiring connections early on during development.

We're interested in how that wiring diagram kind of disintegrates over time.

Well, what causes that?

I've been studying the auditory system as a model for both the development of that wiring

as well as the disintegration of the wiring.

Noise is one way to cause the wiring diagram to disintegrate,

and we've been looking at, what are the mechanisms inside of the sensory cells that loud noises cause or give rise to?

The research that we're doing in my laboratory is one where we're forging new pathways.

How are we built inside of our brains, in our nervous system,

and how does that affect or impact what we do and what we can do?

The university by definition is a place where we learn new things, it's a place of knowledge --

discovering something in one area that then leads to a discovery in a completely different area that was totally unanticipated.

There's so many possibilities out there,

and the idea that you're you're pushing boundaries of knowledge, I think,

really is fundamental for helping students to be able to apply that in so many different other ways,

across whatever they're studying.

I tell my students, one of the fundamental things that you learn in my laboratory

is how to solve problems, and you can take that anywhere.

right there where the guys are standing is where we're going to build our house. Right there.

the lake it's gonna be going up where you see that really bright green grass

it's gonna be a probably a little bit higher than that and the reason why the

lake looks so dirty is because some of the topsoil washed down in it so they're

gonna have to get in there and get that back out and then the water will be

crystal clear so they still have a little bit of work left

they're over there drinking the water

and this is where they're going to be putting the waterfall.

Lillian is exploring when we get the lake done she'll be out there swimming again.

a head wrap is just like something that I do sometimes especially my summer to

kind of protect my hair so when I do this I usually just put conditioner on

it and they tangle it and put it up in a ponytail and that's what I'm doing now

I'm using the new Pantene and shower foam conditioner this conditioner is so

good guys like it's so good it detangle my hair so well and it just glides right

through my hair it's kinda turning white but it kind of

goes away really fast so as you can see like the it just going right through my

hair like you know what stopping I really like this conditioner I got it

for free as a free sample and then you influence the rocks which was great but

I I think I'm gonna definitely start buying this conditioner it's a really

good just on-the-go conditioner so yeah so now I'm just gonna put my hair into a

high high high ponytail that kind of helps the head right to stay in place

because sometimes if you don't do this it kind of was around but if you put it

into a high high point so right on the top of your head then it will do and

this is just my regular like edges protect my edges routine I put this

black castor oil black castor oil is so good for your hair it makes it grow

thicker and longer then I use this AB kinky curly curling custard I'm trying

to try new gels because of the whole eco styler situation I don't know whether to

trust it but I always use a lot more drills anyway so

I like this job because it has a lot of slip in it and it helps my hair just lay

right down so I've got this little brush for the visa why I really like it it's

kind of like the same thing as a toothbrush but it has kind of harder

bristles so I kind of like it a little bit better let's just put those edges

into place and this scarf is one of my favorite favorite scarves it's just so

soft like I like the material not necessarily of the pattern but I really

like the material and so you want to tie it knot to tighten but you want to tie

it to the front you want to put it it's like a square scarf so you want to put

in a triangle and then take the tool take the middle and put it on one side

and you just want to twist it like twist it all the way to the end just keep

twisting you don't have to make it tight because when you twist it is gonna get a

little bit tighter so you want to twist it all the way to the end there's like a

little twist braid like a two strand twist and then you want to tuck

everything in so you can kind of look really smooth and put together and then

that's it guys like that's really it just gonna take you to the baby

 "Arsenal is one of the three biggest clubs in the Premier League, it has a lot of fans, a very big history and I am very happy and for the next year I will be here to help the team," Sokratis said

 And the Greece international admits he spoke to them a lot in the build up of moving to the Premier League

I hate those lists you find that's like "10 Things Every Woman Needs In Her Wardrobe"

or "The One Thing You Need for XY or Z."

I think it's dumb.

I don't think there's one one-size-fits-all rule for how you dress or how you live or

whatever.

But, there is one thing that I really do believe that every room needs.

Do you know what it is?

I think that what every room needs is something old.

Something vintage, something antique, something with character, something with a story behind it.

Something that is a little imperfect, a little irregular, a little beat up, brings a little

heart and soul to the space.

So, why?

Why if you have a whole new room and you're buying all new furnishings and decor should

you put "something old" in there?

Well first, it brings personality.

It has a story behind it.

It has something to say in the room.

A fresh, clean, beautiful polished room is awesome but bringing something in that has

a little bit of grit, a little bit of edge, can make the space feel less like it's on

a magazine page and more like it's in your home with your story and your history.

Or maybe even someone else's history if you just find a cool antique piece somewhere.

One-of-a-kind older pieces also bring a ton of personality.

They're gonna be conversation starters.

Not everyone is gonna have the same thing that you have in your living room.

And that is really cool.

Introducing something old also layers in this kind of eclectic, funky vibe.

It shows that you're confident in not just sticking with one literal design style but

that you can mix and match.

You can incorporate cool, unique pieces.

I love that offbeat mix.

I love what that old piece brings to a space.

It's an element of contrast, it's an attention-getter, and it's a serious conversation starter.

I'm not going to tell you you "need" something old in a room, buuuut it's kind of a good

idea and I think it can really elevate a great room into something amazing.

The action at Wimbledon kicks off today, and Serena Williams is looking to get things started right with a solid first round.

The #25 seed is facing off against Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands.

Williams, looking for her 8th Wimbledon championship, is the clear favorite.

But Rus may be able to capitalize on the fact that Williams has not been very active on the competitive scene in the last few months.

And Rus has a lot to prove.

Here's what you need to know.

Rus Got Her Start as a Junior Level Champion.

The 27-year-old Rus, born and raised in the Netherlands, began playing in professional tournaments at age 14.

In her 2005 debut, she lost in the second round of the ITF Pro tournament at Alkmaar.

She got her first taste of success in 2008.

She surprised the field at the Australian Open; Rus was seeded #14 but clinched the championship by sweeping Jessica Moore in straight sets.

Rus became ranked #1 in the world at the junior level during this period.

Also in the junior level, Rus made it to the semi-finals at the French Open, losing to the eventual champion Simona Halep.

Rus next set her sights on a junior title at Wimbledon, but fell short with a loss in the quarterfinals.

Rus is Tied For Longest Losing Streak in Tour History.

Rus shares a title that no professional athlete wants: the longest losing streak in her sport.

In 2013, Rus just couldn't seem to win no matter how hard she tried.

She lost 17 matches in a row, and dropped to a #156 ranking.

The only other woman to lose that many consecutive tour-level matches is American player Sandy Collins.

That losing streak stretched between 1984 and 1987.

Rus does have something going for her, though: she never gives up.

In an interview published by the Associated Press in 2013, Rus had this to say about her losing streak: "I lost a lot of matches.

Yeah, it's hard, but I try to keep working hard.

That's the only thing you can do.".

The longest losing streak on the men's side belongs to Vince Spadea.

According to the ATP, the American lost 21 consecutive matches from 1999 to 2000.

Rus's Only Championship as an Adult Has Been in Doubles.

Rus's secured her first WTA title on clay at the Swedish Open in July 2017, playing alongside fellow Dutch player Quirine Lemoine.

They defeated Maria Irigoyen of Argentina and Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in an epic final match-up.

Rus and Lemoine lost the first set 3-6, before turning it around in the second set.

The third set become a long-lasting battle, with Rus and Lemoine eventually coming out on top 10-8.

The teammates spoke on-camera after winning the Swedish Open.

They both acknowledged that the win gave them confidence going forward in future singles tournaments.

Rus also stressed the importance of having fun on the court.

Rus Has a History of Surprise Upset Wins, But Has Never Capitalized on That Momentum.

Rus has yet to make it past the third round of Wimbledon.

But in 2012, she surprised the 5th-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur, who was previously ranked as high as 4th in the world, in the second round.

That match showed Rus' ability to rebound after a crushing set: she won 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.

Rus went on to lose 6-1, 6-2 in the third round to Chinese player Peng Shuai.

Also in 2012, Rus made history for her country by becoming the first Dutchwoman in 19 years to reach the fourth round at the French Open.

Her second round victory was over Virginie Razzano of France.

Razzano, who was ranked #111 at the time, had just stunned the tennis world by defeating Serena Williams in the first round.

But Rus squashed that momentum by beating Razzano in straight sets.

Rus won the third round over Julia Gorges before eventually falling to Kaia Kanepi.

Rus Is Ranked #105 in the World.

According to the WTA, Rus' current singles ranking is #105.

Her highest ranking was during 2011 and 2012, when she cracked the top 100 by reaching #61.

The left-handed player is coming off a recent first-round loss at the French Open.

She dropped in straight sets to American Sloane Stephens in just 49 minutes of play.

Sports analysts are betting Serena Williams will easily get past the first round.

But Rus has shown in the past that she's resilient and unwilling to quit.

And she knows Williams is not infallible, after that first-round loss in 2012.

Williams and Rus play at 11:20AM ET.
