Waching daily Jul 29 2018

Thank you for allowing me to interrupt your Man Booker / Booktubeathon content,

cluttering your subscription feed, to bring you yet another--oh my god--

read-a-thon announcement! Hi! my name's Matthew, and everyone and

their mother has a read-a-thon. Let's just face it. However, I wanted to make

some mischief. If you didn't already know, August is Women In Translation Month, and

here on my channel (in my life) I like to read translated fiction. It's

kind of my bread and butter, and I wanted to celebrate. So, I decided to team up

with two lovely humans: Kendra over at Kendra Winchester and Jennifer over at

Insert Literary Pun Here to bring you all a week-long read-a-thon. This

read-a-thon will begin on August 25th and continue through August 31st at

midnight in your timezone. If you feel so inclined to participate, definitely,

definitely do! This one's gonna be pretty chill. We're not going to be doing

anything that exciting. We're just encouraging you all to read women in

translation. I will be doing some reading sprints on my personal Twitter. I don't

know what the other two lovely hosts will be doing, but they might throw in

some fun things as well. I'm hoping Kendra will pull out some Corgi pics?

Like, some translated women fiction Corgi pics? That would be great. But of course, a

read-a-thon would not be a read-a-thon especially here on Booktube, if there

weren't prompts. I'm not gonna call these challenges, because "challenges" implies

that there is a particular winner, when in fact, we are all winners, because we're

gonna be reading some really great things! So, prompt number one is to read

something that is not a novel. This can be anything, this could be a news article,

it could be manga, or a graphic novel, it could be a play. I highly encourage you

to get creative with this prompt, and just read something that isn't a

traditional fiction story. Prompt number two is to read a book about, or of

childhood. This could be a coming-of-age story, this could be a perspective novel,

something that involves children. Prompt number three, because we all love a good

arbitrary prompt is to read a book with red on the cover. Choose something as

part of your TBR that has red on one of the printings of this book. And that is

my pro tip, if you know the original language cover of the book had red on

it, but the English version doesn't, I still think that

counts. So again, get creative. I love an arbitrary prompt. I think it'll be fun to

try to choose something that has red on the cover. Prompt number four, is for

anybody out there who already reads a lot of translated fiction: it is to read

a text translated from a language that you haven't already read a text

translated from before. Nailed it! Now, if you have not read any translated fiction?

Pick a language any language! If you have read lots? This might be a little bit

more difficult for you, but I encourage you to find something out there. We do

also have two bonus prompts. The first bonus prompt is to read a book that was

translated posthumously. A lot of works don't get translated until unfortunately

their authors have passed away, so it would be interesting to dig around--do

some research and see what you can find out. And bonus prompt number two is to

read a text as written by a Nobel laureate. This one again might require

some research, but that is why these are bonus prompts. We don't want to deter

anyone from reading if they feel overwhelmed by these, but they might be a

little bit of fun, and again we don't have to be talking complete books here.

We can be doing their acceptance speeches if you feel so inclined. And

then if you want, like, extra double non-existent because all of this is made

up bonus points, we encourage you to try to find texts that were written by women

of course, but also translated by a woman translator. That's gonna be, like, the

icing on the cake. That's gonna be what makes this read-a-thon the cream of the

crop experience. So those are the rules, those are the details, I'll have

everything down below so you don't have to watch this video over and over again

on loop (though if you feel so inclined give me those views I'm not complaining).

I will be posting a TBR probably after the booktubeathon--after all of that

settles--with some recommendations for these prompts, and also for what I'm

gonna be reading. I know that my co-hosts will be posting some recommendations and

their TBR's as well. So I'm so excited to get this going. It's gonna be, again,

the last week of August. Just to sneak it in there, in case you haven't been

reading enough women in translation. That will be the time. So if you have any

questions or comments or ideas for this read-a-thon, put those down below. I

encourage you to communicate with me because this is gonna be a lot of fun.

It's also gonna be very chill. Like we're doing a very low--stakes, very casual

read-a-thon here. Otherwise, thank you so much for watching, and I hope to see you soon!

How to Help a Depressed Person - What To Say (and What NOT to Say) - Duration: 5:06.

So you now know what the symptoms of depression are, and what it looks like --

and now you want to help. What should you say to a person who is depressed? Stick

around and I'll get to that.

There are loads of things that you can say to help

out a person with depression, but I'd rather get into what you shouldn't say --

because those are the things that you should be avoiding, because those can be

very damaging -- especially when a person is in a sensitive or vulnerable or

depressive state. First up we've got: "you'll get over it" or "get over yourself".

Other things that are similar to these are "Snap out of it" or "Stop feeling sorry

for yourself". "It's not a big deal", "Pull yourself together", "Have you tried to

just... not be sad?" People with depression have whatever problems they're facing

all up in their face, and to them, it overpowers everything else. Saying things

like these makes them feel like you're not trying to help at all. Worse, you've

made their huge problem (that they've probably been dealing with for a period

of time) seem like it's just a trivial thing. This makes them feel alienated.

What can you say instead of this? You can say something like, "I understand that

you're going through a really difficult or challenging time right now. You're not

going crazy, and I'm here to listen." Second up, we've got: "Just be positive."

Other things that are similar to this are: "Have you tried calming tea?", "Just pray

about it", "Just go out and get some exercise", "Let's go out and drink it off,

or let's do drugs!" More often than not, depression isn't a choice. And people

with depression aren't lazy either. They've tried a lot of different

strategies to cope -- maybe even including some of the things that you've just

suggested. Maybe your advice makes sense, but that isn't the point. When you point

out quick fixes, you're essentially telling them that their huge, complex

internal problem can be solved by something simple, small, and external to

them. Their problems aren't so trivial that they can be solved by one simple

thing in that moment. They need to come up with tangible solutions that they can

accept, and the most that we can do is guide them to it. An alternative thing to

say would be: "What would you like to do about it? Whatever it is, I'm here to

support you." or if you can, "Can I give you a hug?"

"Here's another set of things that you shouldn't say: "Just be grateful that you

have..." or, "Some people have it worse", "Everyone has bad days", "Well, life is not

fair." Like I said earlier, their problems are all up in their face. They don't care

about other people's problems -- they care about their own, right in that moment.

They know what they have, and they're not ungrateful for it. They also know that

life isn't fair, because obviously, life isn't being fair to them right in that

current situation. It's just that their current situation is so overwhelming, and

they want so much to find a solution that it's taking all of their energy and

all of their focus. Something you can say instead of this would be: "I can't imagine

what it's like for you, but I'll try my best to understand. I care about you, and

I'm not going to leave you." Another set of things" "It's always about you", "You just

lack attention", "You're making us feel bad", "It's your fault for feeling that way",

"What's wrong with you?" These are some of the worst things you can say to a

person who is depressed or a person with depression. You might be a well-meaning

person to have approached said person with the intent to help, but saying these

things can be incredibly damaging. These things show that you're persecuting the

person for the way he or she feels, which as I've mentioned, is not within their

control. It's bad enough that they're going through a really really tough time,

but saying all these things would just really pile on to what they're going

throug. What would be a better thing to say if they already think that it's

their fault? You could say, "Right now, I don't care whether it's your fault or

not. What I care about is you. Period. And that right now you need help. When people

are depressed, the things that they need most in that moment are empathy, warmth,

support, and understanding. The things I've mentioned earlier could make them

feel dismissed, trivialized, judged, alienated, and pushed away. I get that

it's difficult, but just remember these four things: warmth,

support, understanding, and empathy. And hey. If you find yourself speechless, I'd

like to quote this song from Ronan Keating

in the nineties.

Because sometimes, it's enough that you're just sitting there

with that person, and that person knows that you're there for them. I hope you

found this helpful. If you did, share this with your family and friends, and don't

forget to give this video a thumbs up, and smash that subscribe button. Thanks,

and I'll catch you next time!

WAG Q&A With Adee, Episode 30: Competition Day Nutrition - Duration: 5:21.

This is the day that you've been working so hard for all those hours in the gym

all the sweat the tears sometimes blood this is that day competition day

what we're gonna be talking about today is to make sure that you make the right

choices on competition day so all that hard work doesn't go to waste

I'm gonna give you my top two tips for how to approach nutrition on competition day

number one this should be something that you've tested beforehand so if

you're an athlete in any kind of sport generally you do some type of either

mock competition in weightlifting sometimes you go up to your openers in

CrossFit you do little mock regionals before you go to regionals that is an

opportunity for you to test out competition nutrition if you have some

competitions that might be a little bit less important than others like

regionals compared to a different CrossFit competition use those other

competitions as an opportunity to test out your nutrition so in those less

important competitions you can make bigger mistakes or you can try things

that you've never tried before but what I don't want you to do is try something

that you've never tried before so that's tip number two is don't do anything on

competition day that you've never tried before one great example is me when I

was in a competition in Miami I was at the CrossFit the not the

CrossFit at the Seoul open competing in a weightlifting competition and I tried a

pre-workout that I had never tried before this is a huge rookie mistake I

ended up lightheaded it was way too much for me and I actually ended up missing

all my clean and jerks in that competition that's just one example don't eat any

food you've never eaten before don't have any amounts that you've never had

before any supplements that you've never had before

keep things routine and that you know work for you

this is definitely really common people losing their appetite on competition day it's kind of like your

body has all of these things to worry about you're nervous the adrenaline's

pumping your body's working a little bit extra hard to accomplish the things that

you're trying to get it to accomplish sometimes that can subdue your hunger

so keep in mind first that it's completely normal but also that

just like the answer to the first question you don't want to change up

anything drastically so you still are going to need fuel on that day what I

would suggest is keep things a little bit simpler so eat food items that you

know are gonna feel really great on your stomach it's not gonna be hard for you

to digest and don't have food in really close proximity to when you're gonna

work out might make you feel slow and lethargic depending on who you are

and what your needs are so definitely have a really good hearty strong

breakfast in the morning or a good hearty strong dinner before you go to

sleep at night and then some things that might work around workout times that are

lighter and easier to digest or fuel pouches baby food liquid calories in

these situations I would definitely suggest to get liquid calories like

protein shakes or carb supplements if that's something that you've tried

before it's a little bit easier on the stomach and not gonna get you as full as

eating an entire meal or sticking to other complex carbs like oats or rice or

potatoes that can also be a little bit easier for you to digest

so you've just competed you've just worked really hard for this one event and it's over and now

it's time to celebrate often times celebration surrounds food

indulgence and you want to share that experience with your family and friends

I'm definitely not going to tell you not to enjoy those experiences with your

family and friends however I would take into account that going completely

overboard and using this as an opportunity to just free-for-all eat

whatever you want is not gonna feel good when you wake up the next day so enjoy

yourself don't be super hard on yourself in terms of your food choices eat

something to celebrate and enjoy it in a social situation with friends but try

not to go you know when you go home after that dinner with your family and

friends eat even extra or let it roll into a couple days you're gonna

enjoy this meal celebrating with your family and your friends but let's

not let it roll into an entire week of celebrating after competition

another thing to keep in mind after a competition is when is your next

competition going to be so if you have another competition that's coming up

relatively soon especially for those that are

in a weight class specific sport going free-for-all after competition day is

going to be a lot extra work for you to do going into that next competition so

often times you can see people going celebrating after competition in gaining

five maybe even eight to ten pounds that's gonna be weight that you have to

bring back down it's gonna come back down quicker than if you had gained it

over time but it's definitely going to be harder on your body to go up and down

and for you mentally to have to get right back to being super diligent with

your nutrition so save yourself the time enjoy something limit portion sizes and

have fun but don't ruin all the progress that you've worked so hard for

these are some of the top tips for how to manage your nutrition on competition day

now you know and you can use those tips for your next competition good luck
