The better you are at staying in touch with the people you meet on set, in class, or at
networking events, the more opportunities you'll create for your acting career.
But how do you do that without feeling just icky?
Today I've got three super simple tips to help you make connections on social media
without feeling gross.
If you're brand new here, I'm Heidi Dean, and welcome to my YouTube channel, where I'll
teach you how to rock your social media, make more connections, and create the #Actorslife
of your dreams.
The first step to staying in touch with the people you've met is to find them on social
media.
Find them, follow them, and connect with them right away.
Thank them for the meeting, the experience, or the few minutes they spent talking to you.
This reminds them how they know you, and it'll help bring that offline connection online.
#2 is to set up a Google Alert.
Google Alerts are a free tool to help you keep track of all the people you'd like to
stay in touch with, without having to spend a lot of time researching.
If your new connection is nominated for an award, working on a new project, or speaking
at a screening, Google Alerts emails you that information so you can either strategically
congratulate them online or plan to attend the event.
Step #3 is staying in touch and adding value.
Once you've made a meaningful connection, you need to maintain that relationship and
stay top of mind.
I love this quote from casting director Paul Russell: "Networking is the strongest tool
for an actor.
Actors get most of their jobs not through formal auditions before strangers and passing
acquaintances, but through friends and past work associates.
An actor must always be building sincere relationships with those with whom they work and train."
That's why step #3, staying in touch and adding value, is so important.
Hear that sound?
When you comment on a Tweet, like someone's post, or mention someone in your stories,
that's the sound of them being reminded of you and you maintaining that relationship.
Twitter and Instagram make it super easy for you to stay top of mind, and authentically
comment and like their post.
When they ask questions in their post, respond if you know the answer, and don't forget to
say congrats when they're nominated, they win something, or they celebrate a big win
in their personal life on social media.
You're not asking for anything, you're just deepening that relationship and adding value
to their conversation.
And here's what's really important.
In the future, if there's an opportunity for you to reach out to them about a project,
it's not going to feel gross or weird or out of the blue because you've had this dialogue
with them for months.
Remember, the way to stay connected on social media without feeling needy or gross is by
building a real human relationship, not just trying to book a job, and that is when you'll
start seeing results for your career using social media.
I have a cool bonus tip for you, but before we get to that, let's connect.
Go into the comments and type your Twitter username so I can connect with you, and you
can put everything we talk about today into practice.
Here's that awesome bonus tip.
If you're connecting on Twitter, once you follow them, add them to a Twitter list.
Twitter lists let you group people, like everyone in a show you did, all in one place.
Twitter lists help you cut through all the chaos so you can see the conversations you
want to see.
I'll link to a quick video below that will show you step by step how to set up a list.
Since you're still here, I'm guessing you like this video.
Here's a couple more that you might find helpful.
Until next time, I will see you on social!
