Well that was good. Yeah, it was awesome.
Great weekend, definitely worth coming to again.
It would be nice if the vis was better.
Yeah, the vis was pretty poor wasn't it? Yeah.
With our two Sunday morning dives under
our belt,
Chris and I decided to have lunch at the
Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel, where we
found Santa looking for his lost
contact lenses!
This place really is very nice and
welcoming and you can enjoy a fabulous
view, while you enjoy the fabulous food.
'The Straddie' as it's affectionately known,
also has some beautiful hotel rooms, so
staying here is also an option if you
want. And with views like that, why
wouldn't you?
That's the feed. That's what we want for
Lunch. Yeah, I think I should've had that.
Yeah, but you've got healthy stuff there,
you've got veggies. I love my veges.
Pulled pork, wedges, sour cream and chilli sauce.
A couple of lunches and a couple
of cold beers later, it was time for us
to head back to the house and load up
our gear ready for the short trip back
to the ferry terminal.
With the Sun just about to set below the
Western horizon, we arrived back in
Cleveland after a fantastic weekend of
diving on Stradbroke Island. If you're
looking for a weekend away that's not
too far to travel, where you can see some
fantastic marine life, I highly recommend
this trip. We did get a little bit
unlucky with the visibility on this
weekend, but that didn't detract from the
beautiful marine life that we encountered
and the fun we had as a group.
I will definitely be back for more.

I was told by my CPA that I could give away $10,000 (or $14,000) each year to my kids.
Is this true?
How does it work?
Well, it's true, but the reason for doing that depends on your circumstances.
In other words, for Medicaid planning or nursing home planning that's generally a very bad
idea.
People get the Medicaid and the nursing home rules confused with the gift tax rules where
those same gifts can be a good idea.
The difference is, in the gift tax arena people will give away, and can give away, right now
it's up to $14,000 per year, per beneficiary, per spouse, and they don't even have to file
a gift tax return to the federal government.
Currently, in Massachusetts, there is no gift tax.
That type of incremental gifting can be very helpful to chip away at their estate for federal
and estate tax purposes.
In other words, it doesn't affect their exemption.
Everyone gets a $5.4 million federal estate tax exemption.
If you gift under those levels every year, you don't affect it.
You don't chip away at it and that can be a good thing for estate tax purposes.
However, those same gifts, if you're applying for nursing home Medicaid, will cause a gifting
penalty.
In other words, a period of time where Medicaid won't pay for your stay and on average, in
Massachusetts, your looking at roughly $12,000 a month to private pay through that penalty.
It is generally two different types of clients.
Wealthier clients who are gifting to help their estate tax situation, and the rest of
us who may be applying for nursing home Mass health and should think long and hard about
the consequences, the penalties, for those gifts if they need nursing home Medicaid within
five years of the gift.
I hope that's clear enough, but if it's not you should see a qualified elder law attorney
to discuss the gifting penalties and how they might affect you.
