Are struggling to make money self publishing on Amazon or elsewhere?

Have you been hustling in the kindle publishing business for far too long with little to show for it?

Then, you may be guilty of seven self publishing mistakes.

To find out more, stick around!

(music)

What's shakin', it's Dale here.

and boy do I got the goods for you today on some of the most common self publishing mistakes.

First, if you're new to this channel and you wanna learn how to publish and profit the right way…

Then subscribe and hit the bell icon next to it to get notifications for all the latest videos

on kindle publishing, Createspace and beyond.

The self-publishing business continues to massively expand and therefore become excessively crowded.

Most everyone is ready to share their self-publishing conquests since it's now easier than ever to produce literature online.

And, a choice few are making an incredible living from it.

I'm fortunate to be among the few who made this a career that provides for my family.

But, my success was not overnight and I had my share of poor choices and self publishing mistakes.

So, I compiled a list of seven self publishing mistakes that could very well

stifle your self-publishing business.

I can't promise you'll make millions if you heed my advice…

But you certainly increase the likelihood of self-publishing success.

Let's get to it! Your book title sucks!

Early in my self publishing career, I created clever book titles.

But, the problem was no one ever enjoyed my efforts.

Truthfully, no one was looking for my books. Why?

Because the book titles sucked.

You can have the most brilliant book titles…But

if you aren't saying exactly what your audience is searching for online, then you're screaming into a pillow.

(someone screaming into a pillow in the background)

Find and use keywords relevant to what your target audience searches.

Don't be a spam artist and front load your title with a bunch of nonsensical phrases or crazy combinations of keywords.

Find a balance between keyword-rich and tasteful for your book title.

You have a crappy book cover design

All readers judge a book by its cover, so don't pass off amateur graphic design for a five-star classic.

Amazon Cover Creator and online cover designing software come with preformatted cover designs

that just don't cut the ketchup.

I'd be amazed if a crap cover could even draw money, much less, flies. (sound of flies in the background)

If you aren't a cover designer, then hire an experienced professional.

And, if you don't have the money, then find a way to raise the funds

to hire a good cover designer.

The investment is worth it and your payday will reflect the quality of your cover.

Pricing your book too high. Assuming you have a great book title and cover

and you still don't see book sales…

You may need to re-examine how you are pricing books on Amazon.

Price your book around the same cost as your competition, but stay realistic.

If you are not a celebrity or an established author, then you shouldn't price yourself out of the market.

For the newbie Kindle publisher, keep your ebook prices around ninety-nine cents to three dollars and ninety-nine cents.

And, for paperbacks, set your book price around four dollars and ninety-nine cents to eight dollars and ninety-nine cents.

Remember, if someone orders your paperback, they still have to pay shipping and taxes.

So, you shouldn't expect them to pay more than ten bucks for a book.

There are definitely exceptions to this rule since pricing and profit

should be relevant to the book content.

No real book editing process

Depending on the online retailer, your customer has the opportunity to return your book with no questions asked

by most online retailers.

If your book is rubbish, then they can send it back.

The most common reason I see poor reviews on a book is a lack of editing.

Much like a good cover designer, hiring an experienced editor is a necessity.

Publishing garbage on the market does NOT build a long term sustainable self publishing business.

Readers see through hack work and aren't afraid to share their thoughts on poor writing.

Without good professional editing, your book is doomed to eventual failure.

Raise the funds for this critical step in your book production.

Major in the minor things

You shouldn't spend time spamming Facebook groups and Twitter feeds with your free book promotion.

Also, avoid analysis paralysis….

You know, when you're constantly researching how to release the perfect book to get the best results.

And, something I've touched on far too many times on this channel.

Getting reviews. This should NOT be a major part of your business.

And, now that Amazon is going on a witch hunt for what they deem fake reviews,

it's best you focus your time, attention and finances on publishing and promoting books.

Spending money recklessly

A common rookie mistake is to hire out based on the business model of established writers.

Here's the deal, veteran self-publishers have enough monthly income to scale their business.

So, they can hire virtual assistants, multiple freelance writers, cover designers, and editors.

However, if you are new to self-publishing, then save your money and build your business one brick at a time.

This means you should only hire out if it's necessary.

Produce all your content on your own if you can.

Once you have consistently broken about a thousand dollars or more per month,

then consider scaling your business by hiring out.

In the meantime, tough it out and gradually grow your business.

Chasing the trends, also known as shotgunning or spray and pray.

Adult coloring, erotica romance and no-content paperback books have been the all the rage lately.

Naturally, once self-publishers see the market trends shift,

they adjust their business model to accommodate these changes.

This business practice is a never-ending battle to keep up with the ever-changing trends.

Self-publishers whose business is chasing trends are running on the proverbial hamster wheel.

You will get instant gratification, but never establish a brand by trying to keep up with the market interest.

Stick to what you know and love. Then, build a brand around it.

By building a brand and growing a reading audience, you have a greater chance of survival and sustainability.

Self-publishing isn't an easy business; otherwise, everyone would do it

and become wealthy in the process.

You can increase the likelihood of success in this business if you minimize the number of mistakes.

Inevitably, you will make errors, but if you take my advice,

then you just may prosper quicker than most self-publishers.

That's all the time we have for today, and remember, clicking the thumbs up an odd number of times is NOT obsessive compulsive.

So, click that thumbs up, one, three, five or heck even eleven times if you feel froggy!

Also, if you want to learn more about how to publish and profit the right way, then click the subscribe

button and turn the notifications on to get all my latest videos.

Now, get out there and publish some books, you savvy self-publisher you.

Till later, this have been Self Publishing with Dale and I'll see you guys soon. (outro music)

How to Know your Value for Merit Pay Increase - Duration: 3:45.

- You just came out of busy season, and it's time.

It's merit increase time,

it's time for you to get a pay raise.

Go in to performance evaluation time and

merit increase time prepared.

Know what your value is,

and know your value, not only by what the market is paying,

but actually based on what results because ultimately,

you should be paid based on what the market is, but

most important, based on the value that you are bringing.

So first of all, how do you know what value you're bringing?

What I would do is I go back over the past year,

I would go back through your email and look at the feedback

that you receive from clients, peers and leaders.

If you haven't accumulated that information in one place,

I'd go ahead and do that, and I would actually bucket it,

and look at some themes.

You know, don't pull out the onesy, twosies,

I'd really bucket it in to the comment areas,

like, hey you know what, people really love my ability

to connect with clients and learn the business quickly.

What are the common themes you're seeing

and hearing in feedback.

Secondly, what projects have worked on, and what are

the common themes and results that you've come out of there.

Have you come up with innovative ideas?

Everyone talks about innovation and adding value.

What have you done outside of your scope of work?

That's second, we are all paid and expected to do a job,

your value comes when you go above and beyond.

Come to your final appraisal sharing what you have done

above and beyond.

Have examples ready, past behavior predicts future,

and you need to be able to share what you've done.

Really, those are the two things that I would recommend

you do, many times you are doing self appraisal,

I know, even as an HR professional I really didn't enjoy

doing them myself.

What I do know, is that keeping up on it throughout the year

and being able to just provide examples, made it

a lot easier.

So those are my two things.

One, I'd look through feedback from my peers, my leaders,

and my clients.

Feedback's a great way, it doesn't lie.

And second, I'd look for when I went above and beyond.

Also come prepared to share what I need to improve on.

Great employees know where their opportunities are.

Areas of opportunity and those areas that you'd like

to talk about and work on in the next year.

A players know they're not awesome at everything,

you are an A player if you're aware and have

emotional intelligence that you need to improve on areas

because once you are aware of what you need to improve on,

and you're able to articulate that and have discussions

with your leader on it, now you're really talking.

I tallied all the offers that I've made across the country

specifically for accounting folks that are operating in

public accounting and, or in the internal audit space.

You can download the report now and it gives you

a great idea of what the market's paying, you know,

if you have your CPA, if you have your CIA, MBA,

what you can expect to pay.

Download the free compensation report now.

Go into your performance appraisal prepared

and knowing that the market is paying.

Be prepared to have conversations around

what the value is, where you are today,

and where you could potentially be

if you did consider leaving.

Theresa Nordstrom with Nordstrom Talent,

please like my video, share the free compensation report

with your peers, they can also download it,

lets help others make sure they are paid equally

and have great conversations starting off on the right foot

for 2017.

Thanks a lot, have a great day.

How To Get Into Harvard | Spoken Word Poetry - Duration: 7:19.

Hi everyone, my name is Sahil Handa, and I'm a student from London who got into Harvard

and Stanford. I'm making this video because lots of people have been asking me for some

tips on how to get in. How to game the admissions process and give themselves the best chance

to win. So I figured I'd do it in a slightly unusual way, instead of using that cookie-cuttered

approach in most videos and guidebooks today. So sit back, relax, go to the fridge, grab

some cheese, and listen to my weird application hypotheses. There'll be six sections; academics, extracurriculars,

essays and athletics. Followed by a few closing words and a little

musing on being authentic. So where to start? SATs, yes, academics and exams. The part

of the process that everyone seems to equate with tuition programs and heart spasms. So

my ACT score was 32, and my SAT subject scores, not that great, but I realised that I had

to just prove to them that I was competent; whether that was through my test scores or

my grades. Picture yourself as an admissions officer, running through long student profiles

hour after hour, and the little test score is just so small that it's difficult for

even the most trained eye to scour. Now that doesn't mean academics don't matter at

all, and in fact I'd aim for a test score around the fifty percent median of admitted

students across the board. But it is to say that there's loads of kids with perfect standardised

scores who go and sit the same exams weekend after weekend after weekend only to find out

that they're not going to be admitted to Harvard in the fall. In terms of school exams, yes,

a consistent positive track record is optimal, but if you've not always been the perfect

student then talk to them about how you've overcome those obstacles. That you've recognized

the importance of education and found what you're interested in. That you've gone out of your

way and beyond the school syllabus to find out more about this crazy world we're living

in. You've read the extra books, challenged your beliefs and clued yourself up. Not just

because you want to get into college, but because you want to take responsibility for

your mind and man up

Okay, extracurriculars up next, where more of your personality begins to come into play.

But where I also get loads of people asking me what activities or roles will have the

most sway. The trick is not to think of this section as a product to design or a checklist, but

to find where your talents and interests align, and then follow those things like they're

opportunities you'd be crazy to miss. Persisting with the learning and resisting any difficulties;

if you're a dancer, trying teaching, and if you're a coder, building a website, and,

if you're a scientist, maybe even trying to find a new perspective on a disease. It's

the trying that counts, they want to see your determination and tenacity; that you're someone who's

willing to go above and beyond to make the most out of your potential and capacity.

So stretch yourself, get out of your comfort zone, and just pursue what you care about.

Allow failure to push you further and acquire a work ethic that will allow you to power

through insecurities and self-doubts. Show commitment; don't just sign up to as many

clubs as possible, but find a position that suits your skills and then pursue it with

so much vigour that saying no to you is impossible. Make the most of your lucky position on this

earth and really think about how you can contribute; Harvard and Stanford love to see confident

people who have that kindness to boot

Essays now, right, I'm trying to get through these as fast as possible, so bear with me

and I'll try and make this section a little more methodical. Focus on putting across a

story, being a real human being; not necessarily the next ruler of the earth but someone with

real emotion and feeling. Don't let your one chance to communicate with the admissions

officers be the botched up sum of that time you won that internship, got that gold star

and were told you were special by your mum. Have some fun! You know, tell them

about a meaningful experience, perhaps an obstacle you've had to overcome or a funny obsession

that tells them something interesting about your inner appearance. Don't allow an embellished

CV to make an interference, but use this as a way to throw the barriers of "University

Application" into clearance. Tell them who you are, what you love and who you want to

be. Tell them a tale about what led you to your goal or your favourite hobby. It really

is that horrible, annoying, face-palming cliche; that if I picked up your unnamed essay on

the floor I should just know immediately from the tone that it came from your way. Okay,

so, I hope you've seen that this whole thing takes some self-inspection; really looking

at yourself in the mirror and realising that there's value in the reflection. If rejection

comes on decisions day and you didn't happen to fit what Harvard, Stanford or anyone else

desire, don't let the feelings of rejection and the lacking self-affection allow you to

forget that you're responsible for living a life you admire. That may sound cheesy,

contrived or slightly pretentious but I promise you it's true. Treating one admissions

officer's opinion of you as gospel is nothing but completely and utterly senseless. If

you do get in, awesome, use the resources wisely from the second you start as a freshman

and if you're acquiring debt, learn what that means and make sure you really utilise

this investment. Harvard and Stanford are fantastic and if you take these tips you've

got a much better chance of attending. Listening to incredible speakers, learning fascinating

theories and making lifelong friends in the library while essay deadlines are pending.

But if you don't get in, their loss, use the experience to learn about who you are.

College isn't an end destination so pick yourself up and take pride in your scar. Wave

goodbye, choose another path, and wish them nothing but the very best. Understand that

you're not dependent on any one thing for your success. Because the more we allow our

worth to be defined by colleges, lovers, universities and other questionable personalities, the

more we begin to forget that the way that someone else sees our identity does not determine

the limits of our capacities. It's up to us to challenge ourselves, sort ourselves

out and learn what our lives are about. To be critical of ourselves whilst realising

we can all find a calling worth telling our grandchildren about.

So challenge your own opinions, because that's intellectual curiosity, and follow what you

love at the highest velocity. Be human, don't try to be perfect, that would be a monstrosity,

and always remember to attack your free time with ferocity. But most of all, be you, with

all your quirks, intricacies and weirdness. Just be you. Do the things you love, find

what you're passionate about; follow through, work hard, and be the person you want to be.

Because that way, not only will you have a better chance of getting in, but if you focus

on being the best version of yourself then, whether you get in or not, you'll never

have to stop and think and question whether things just might've been different if you

hadn't held up that filter over yourself.

Gen Y Money: What you need to know about owning and buying a condo - Duration: 1:39.

Although this sticker price on most condos is less than a house,

buying a condo has all the usual...

and all of the regular owning bills like...

The difference with condos is that you'll

also have to pay regular, monthly maintenance fees.

Think of a condo maintenance fee

as your share of the cost of running the building.

Anything from the carpets in the hallway

to paying the concierge, to gardening and snow removal.

These fees vary from building to building

but they can be quite high

and they can shoot up drastically over time.

Condo owners can also be on the hook for big one-time costs.

Thousands of dollars from major

repairs not covered in the buildings budget,

like fixing a leaky roof,

faulty windows or a cracked parking garage floor in a massive building.

These steps could save you thousands down the road

and help you decide if condo ownership is right for you.

The 'Cast Away' Ending You Weren't Supposed To See - Duration: 3:59.

- Wilson, I'm Sorry.

I'm sorry!

Wilson!

I can't.

(Mournful music)

- I always knew you were alive.

- I'm home now.

We can be together.

- Chuck, it's not that simple.

You were gone so long and-

- (voice offscreen) Hey, babe!

Frasier is coming on, let's go.

Chuck?

Is that really you?

- Wilson?

- Wow it's really good to see you, man.

- It was a small ceremony.

Just friends and family.

- Kelly's parents, they really wanted a beach wedding

But I don't think I could've.

- How did you even find each other?

- You told me where you lived.

That's the only address I had.

- Didn't seem weird that you stole my life?

- I'll tell you what's weird, Chuck

bobbing around in the ocean alone for days

just wondering why your best friend left you to die.

- I almost drowned trying to save you!

- How do you almost drown

when you have the whole raft to yourself?

- Honey.

- Chuck.

- You're in a safe place.

- I can't believe this.

I should've never gotten on that plane.

- Yeah but that's you, Chuck.

You let people in your life cast away.

- I lost you that day, too.

Now

I lost everything.

- Honey, can Chuck and I have a minute alone?

- Fine!

He's here to see you anyway.

- I want to show you something.

- This is our car.

You kept our car.

- A lot of good memories in this car.

- (voice offscreen) We all have memories here, Chuck.

- Wilson!

- I got an HJ right where you're sitting, buddy.

- I should go.

- Yeah get out of here!

- Chuck.

Chuck!

Chuck!

(Loud kissing noises)

- I knew you were alive!

Everybody said I had to stop saying that,

that I had to let you go.

You're the love of my life.

It was just physical with her.

I'm sorry, honey, but you know it's true.

It was the only way I could be close to you.

- Wilson, I get it.

- No this has been eating at me.

I poked a whole in the water bed just so we could

get really really wet.

I had her put on your clothing

and go weeks without showering.

One time she put on a fake beard.

- You jerk!

- And a prosthetic penis-

- Wilson!

Wilson!

I'm sorry!
