Hi! Welcome to our making of for Plants VS Zombies in real life remastered.
This was the first time I did not have to interact with other actors.
In part one I basically played myself...
...the planter...
... and the zombies.
In other words, I fought against myself.
I don't want to belittle my work in this trilogy...
...but there are quite a few more demanding challenges for an actor...
... than what I had to pull of in these clips.
In the end I had to rely on the post production... on Heiko and Felix...
... to make something great out of my performances.
My work on the Plants VS Zombies clips...
...really started with the third part.
Part one was produced only by Heiko and Patrick...
... and the plans for the second part really changed again and again...
... so that the models for that never made it into the finished version.
Starting with part three I created all new 3D models...
...and redesigned the already exisiting models.
This was our first clip we uploaded to our channel...
... after we decided...
... to actively run a youtube channel and upload new content on a regular basis...
... with the focus on video game clips...
... in real life or with at least a connection to video games.
The fact that our very first clip went viral ...
... really surprised us and took us off-guard.
Because on the one hand you're in heaven, thinking this will go on like this.
On the other hand it soon became very obvious...
... what our future target audience would be.
Plants VS Zombies...
... is a very special chapter...
... in the history of Hethfilms.
It is for better or worse our Youtube flag ship property.
We can't deny that.
Because of that this topic is a double edged sword for us...
... as we know this stuff is working on our channel...
... and we know we have a fan base on our channel for this...
... that only subscribed to us for Plants VS Zombies related clips.
And you can really see this...
... on the views of our other clips that are not related to Plants VS Zombies.
On the one hand we already have produced quite a lot of clips for that...
... and really milked this concept to the last drop...
... but on the other hand Plants VS Zombies absolutely belongs...
... to our video portfolio for which our fans absolutely love us.
The thing with Plants VS Zombies is the story is already somewhat set.
The people from Popcap already decided on how it all works.
We can't simply create other monsters or characters as we like.
The time has come...
... to go back and...
... or well, to do something new...
... what we ourselves would enjoy doing.
We can't deny that this is just how things progressed on this channel...
... and that there are fans for this and that these clips work on our channel...
... and have been enjoyed by many people.
The thing that annoyed me the most about this...
... in the whole trilogy I only had...
... one word.
Anyone recognizes that we are Germans talking English.
Which can feel quite out of place.
We already had feedback on other clips like...
... "Hahaha, they're Germans!".
And for this series of clips we did not want to...
... be put in this sort of category.
This should feel accessible to anyone in the world.
Which kind of worked.
The reason behind doing this clip right now...
... after all the time the first one is already online...
... we did not expect that one to go viral back then.
That means...
When we uploaded it we did not pay much attention to...
... having a high enough bitrate so youtube wouldn't completely ruin it during processing.
We did not put much thought into the color grading to be honest.
We used Magic Bullet Looks back then.
So we just pushed everything really orange and ...
... applied a very heavy vignette to the whole clip.
So we basically just produced something without putting too much thought into it.
I think if we would've known back then where this would lead...
... we would've produced this clip quite differently.
We would've created quite a different look in regards to what followed later.
But that did not happen, we did not enticipated any of that, it was just a happy accident.
So I recently came up with the idea to fix it now.
And to bring the first clip...
... in regards to look and feel and sound design...
... closer to part two and three which looked quite similar.
They both were shot in beautiful sun light, had bright colors and good contrast.
They did not have such an extreme look, it was more natural and nice.
So... Not so stylized.
And the first one was really standing out... It was dark and mushy and dull.
It just looked very amateurish to say the least.
So my aspiration now that I've made great progress in learning color grading...
... and having much better equipment available now...
... to try and get more out of the old footage.
And while being at it we decided...
... to re-do the 3D models of the plants.
Meaning that the... well...
The plants in part one were created by myself...
... with my very limited skill set in Cinema 4D.
In part three Felix created all the 3D models.
And Felix is in this regard...
.. way more experienced and talented than me.
On my part the remastering was quite easy to do.
Heiko still had all the old 3D files available.
So I could easily re-use the tracking data, positions of the models and the animation timings.
I only had to create new animations for the plants jumping out of the ground...
... as we did not have those before.
I was even able to re-use the prerendered animations of the plants...
... that we used for the wide shots like they are portrayed in the game.
We used that perspective in the first and third clip.
So.. The plants in the third clip...
... I created the wide shot only in After Effects and not in 3D.
Not at least to save ressources.
So the plants were just prerendered animations.
Fully rendered quicktime video files with alpha channels.
That way we could just import them into After Effects, place them in the shots and they looked great.
And the irony is that plants the way we rendered them...
... still matched up enough with the perspective of the first clip to replace the old models...
... without us having to re-render everything from scratch.
Due to a much higher quality in lighting and modeling work the rendering times increased quite a bit.
To make up for that we used the C4D Team Render.
That way we were able to use more than one machine to render...
... and even deployed a laptop for this task.
The zombies were also played by Patrick himself in part one.
The usual stuff...
We later tracked the zombie heads in 2D and 3D onto his body.
But you can still see his hands.
And you see his neck and also you see his...
one exposed leg clearly showing his skin.
I colored all his skin green back then using an old version of Colorista.
I'm not using this plugin any more for quite some time now and the version I had...
... is not compatible with After Effects any more since three or four versions back.
So that effect wasn't available anymore.
And all the zombies were back to having normal flesh tones and no green skin.
Because of that I had to re-do all these effects in Davinci Resolve from scratch.
Luckily, it worked out pretty great to isolate the skin tones...
.. and push all the skin tones back to a greenish / grey.
It was more work than anticipated but it was worth it in the end.
Hadn't I done that it would've looked rather strange.
So now everything is much closer to and looks and feels quite alot more like part two and three.
This links the whole trilogy much more nicely together and...
... you don't see as clearly as before that...
... we did not have much of a concept in the beginning before all this blew up.
That's about it.
I hope you liked this little look behind the scenes and...
... yeah... see you soon!
