German Courses - Our Students - Duration: 3:45.Students who come to Carl Duisberg Centren
can expect much more than just a language class.
We promote life-long learning and provide students with everything they need
to be safe, to have fun and to achieve their goals.
I'm learning German because I want to go to college in Germany.
I'm learning the language because my family ancestry is German.
I received a scholarship to do my doctorate thesis here in Cologne.
I'm an opera singer, so I wanted to be able to learn operas, as well as arias, in German quickly and thoroughly.
In a world where the English language is so predominant, I think it is very important,
especially for young people, to speak a second language.
And because of Germany's economic position in the world,
I think German is a pretty good choice.
There are a lot of activities, for example, giving presentations
and learning German with games.
There was a great mix between traditional and practical learning methods.
I really enjoyed the interactive activities.
Having conversations in German really helped me use my new vocabulary correctly.
In my classroom, I focus on establishing relationships based on mutual trust.
Students should learn in a relaxed environment where they feel comfortable and can also fully
concentrate on their tasks.
Carl Duisberg Centren welcomes more than 3,000 course participants from 126 countries
to learn German each year.
Our aim is to promote international understanding by building bridges
that span the language and culture gap.
We all have different mother tongues, but the common ground is German.
We're all here to learn German.
In my classroom there were students from 7 or 8 countries.
Together we could share our different experiences of living in Germany.
We were all at the same German level so we could learn really well together.
The majority of the students who study here are doing university or doctorate degrees.
It's a time of personal development and a transition from student life into adulthood.
Learning a new language plays a big part in this development.
Many students who come here without any German language skills
start speaking the language very quickly.
It's really quite amazing.
Learning German made me more self-confident
and also gave me a new appreciation for my home country.
A year and a half ago, I couldn't speak any German at all.
But right now I'm speaking with you – I'm so proud of that!
Learning German has been such a huge impact on my work with singing.
I definitely recommend Carl Duisberg to everyone.
It's really different to learn a language in the country where it's actually spoken.
I recommend Carl Duisberg Centren for German courses.
You have the opportunity to speak the language a lot and improve your language skills quickly.
When someone wants to learn German, I would recommend them to
come to Carl Duisberg to study German.
Everyone here is very friendly, especially the lecturers – they are very helpful!
I had a great time here.
There are no limits to learning
at Carl Duisberg Centren.

Ep. 70 "I'll Forever Be Grateful" | Library Stories - Duration: 1:47.The Library has been an essential part
of my life since I came to this country.
I felt very isolated. I was very homesick.
I was missing my family, my friends.
I did understand English but definitely
needed to improve it, and I found out
that the Library offers free English classes,
so that was my first interest.
Then I saw that you can also apply
to volunteer at the Library. I started with the
Library as a volunteer and an ESOL student,
became employed by the Library,
ended up managing the branch where I
originally started volunteering, and then
got promoted to outeach manager where now
I oversee programs and services
for immigrants and other communities for the whole system.
Now in this role that I have,
I'm privileged to be able to work with
everybody throughout the three boroughs,
which is really exciting.
Thanks to the resources that I was able to get
at the Library, I had my interview and I
became a citizen in January of this year.
So now that I'm a citizen, I feel even
more — how can I describe it — an even
greater sense of responsibility.
And I want to help people; I want people
to able to achieve this as well and become
citizens so they can have a more filled
life and contribute to society.
I can honestly say that I am who I am
and where I am right now thanks to what
The New York Public Library has done for me.
I'll forever be grateful.

Learn How to Crochet Scallops on Fleece Blanket - Lace Edge Border Edging Trim on Fabric - Duration: 10:16.Hi I'm Donna Wolfe from naztazia.com
Today i'm going to show you how to
crochet a scalloped edge on a fleece
blanket. The written pattern and supplies
list is on naztazia.com You will need
one skein of Red Heart yarn and a size F
hook. And 47 inches by 47 inches of
fleece fabric. By the way be sure to
click on the subscribe button to get
notified of new videos from me each week.
We're going to place marks on the fabric,
so use a pencil or washable fabric
marker. Place your tape measure on one
side of the fabric and place a mark at 1
inch... 2 inch... 3 inch... and so forth. You'll
have 46 marks on this side. Turn your
fabric and place marks every inch on
this side. You'll have 46 marks on this
and all other sides. Then place an
additional mark - one in each of the four
corners. To review start with 47 inches
by 47 inches piece of fleece. Place 46
marks on each side. Then place one mark
in the four corners, for a total of 188
marks. Now take an awl and poke a hole
through the fabric along each of the
marks. Ensure your crochet hook can fit
through the holes.
And if you're on social media you can
also find me on Facebook, Instagram,
Pinterest, and Twitter. With your yarn
make a slip knot. Find the hole right next
to a corner and make a single crochet
into it. Then in this corner we'll first
chain 5.
Then make a single crochet stitch.
Then chain 5 again.
And make another single crochet stitch
in that same corner hole. Then for the
remainder holes on this side just chain
five and make one single crochet.
Chain 5. One single crochet. Repeat this
process until your next corner.
Once this side is completed let's work
in this corner. Chain 5, single crochet in
the corner, then chain 5 again, and single
crochet in the same corner. Continue down
this other side with just a chain 5 and
one single crochet in each hole.
After going around the blanket in this
pattern, just slip stitch to the first
single crochet. To begin round 2, slip
stitch into that adjacent loop. Chain 1
and single crochet in the loop. Now in
this corner loop make 9 treble crochet
stitches. If you need help with the
basics of crochet be sure to see my
beginner crochet videos on YouTube, which
review stitches like the treble crochet.
Then in the next loop single crochet. You
can see what we have done. Chain five and
make a single crochet in the next loop.
And in this next loop we're going to
repeat that whole nine treble crochet
stitch motif... three...
four... five... six... seven... eight... and nine. Then
single crochet in the next loop. Chain 5
and single crochet in the next loop. You
can see the pattern here of nine treble
crochet stitches, with chain five loops
in between them. To finish this round
we're doing something a little different...
chain two and then double crochet into
that first single crochet. Chain 1 and
single crochet in the loop. In each of
the treble crochet stitches we're going
to make a treble crochet, but we're going
to put a picot in between. Make your
treble crochet stitch, chain 3, and slip
stitch into that first chain...
three...
four...
five...
six...
seven...
eight...
We'll end with just a treble crochet
stitch. You can see the nine treble
crochet stitches and the eight picots in
between. Single crochet in the next loop.
Start the motif all over again... treble
Crochet in each of the nine stitches. Put
a picot in between. And here's my last
treble crochet. And then in the next loop
single crochet. You can see what this
looks like. Continue around the blanket
with this pattern. At the end just slip
stitch to the first single crochet. To
finish cut and weave in all of your ends.
And here is the finished crochet
scallop edge on a fleece blanket. To

130 - Creating groups - Duration: 4:37.Groups are used in many courses for different reasons.
Let's take a look at some of the ways that you can use them.
To create groups, click on the "Groups" link in your course website.
You could also access that exact same point by going to 'Course Admin' and then clicking
on "Groups".
Either approach works.
On a new course, there won't be any groups to find just yet.
We can start by clicking on "Create New Category".
We will create groups for one purpose, for example for a workshop, and then we can come
back and use the "New Category" button again to make groups for another purpose, for example
a group called "Assignments".
Let's start with that workshop example.
Click on "New Category" and then we have the option to give it a name, fill in a description,
and we can choose how the students are to be grouped.
Six options are possible.
The first three are where you as the instructor or teaching assistant manually assign students
into the groups.
Either you can choose groups of a certain number, for example groups of five, or you
can choose how many groups you would want.
For example: four, three, seven groups.
The last three options are where students can choose to enroll themselves in a group.
If you select any of these last three options, students also have the ability to un-enroll
from the group and re-enroll themselves in another.
There is a cut-off date and time by which they need to do that.
Let's try the self-enrollment example for a workshop now.
We want 3 groups with self-enrollment and there is a capacity of 35 students per group.
Fill in those numbers.
35 students per group and 3 groups.
We can give it a prefix, for example 'Workshop', and then Brightspace will create names 'Workshop
1, 2, 3' for us.
We can then go modify those.
We can set an expiry on when students can choose to self-enroll.
In other words this is the deadline for them to make up their mind which group they want
to be in.
After that deadline we can have Brightspace allocate un-enrolled students into a group.
We will ignore the option of lockers, discussion area's, assignment submission folders since
that is not appropriate or needed for a workshop.
We will come back to these later, though, for other group uses.
Click "Save".
Now we have those three groups and we can go modify their names and add a bit of a description
over here.
We can also see at any moment who is currently enrolled in these groups.
We can also go manually add students into a group.
Click on the "Enroll Users" button and here we can then filter this list by people who
are currently enrolled, or not enrolled in a group.
So we can use this, for example, to manually enter and make changes to our groups if needed.
Some things to watch out for: when you go and enroll users manually as shown here, this
list can be very long and may not show the entire class.
For very large classes this will be a problem.
You can click save and make your changes and come back and go to the next page 2/3, 3/3
for example.
Also when scrolling from left to right, the current theme in Brightspace does not show
the username anymore once you go one screen to the right so this is less helpful when
you need to enroll manually, very large numbers of students.
In that case, we want you to contact Brightspace Support.
We have a way to work around this.
There is one restriction currently in Brightspace and that is if you want students to be able
to start their group enrollment on a certain date and time.
That is not currently possible.
In other words; once you have created the groups in Brightspace, if a student logs into
the system and sees the group being available they can sign in right away.
You can't postpone that to some particular date and time in the future.
Our advice then is: only create the groups on the day that students can start to enroll.
We are looking at some workarounds; please contact Brightspace Support to see what the
current status of that is.
Now, other videos in this series will consider group lockers, group discussion forums and
groups for assignments.
Please watch those if you need them for your course.

London Living Rent Emma's story - Duration: 0:28.The London Living Rent scheme has helped me prepare for the future, because it's given me a plan.
And it sounds really clichéd but it's given me a bit of hope that I can actually be a
homeowner, that I'm not going to have to rent for the rest of my life.
The fact that you can buy where you live - that's a massive, massive bonus for me.
I always wanted to own a property, already it feels like my home and I haven't even been here a month!
I've already met my neighbours, I love living here.
I feel so lucky to be able to be part of the London Living Rent scheme.

and we come across London Living Rent on a housing website.
And we fit the scheme perfectly and we contacted them and we viewed the property, me and my
girlfriend loved it - and we went for it!
We were living previously with our parents.
We wanted to move out but we didn't have enough for the deposit.
The scheme has made us independent.
I think the flat has brought me and my girlfriend closer as well.
I mean for us it literally took three weeks from viewing the flat to actually living here.
It was great, and we feel very positive about the future.
