Hey there. It's book riot associate editor
Sharifah here and today I want to talk to
you about moving that book collection.
I have moved so many times in my life.
I've probably moved once a year like for the
last decade. It's a problem guys. I often
look forlornly at my book
collection because as a result of having
moved around so much I lost a lot of
books along the way. I've had to make
sacrifices because I didn't always have
the resources to move my entire book
collection much less my furniture and my
other possessions. So I have had to give
up a lot of books. And I'm about to move
again and this time I want to keep my books.
So I think one thing I would have
benefited from knowing or having
considered when I was moving in the past
is you can ship some books. You can ship
some of your books to your new place.
You don't have to carry it all in your car
or in the moving van. When you're dealing
with the chaos of moving, any scenario
where things magically appear on your
doorstep is a welcome one. There are
services that aren't your typical
services like beyond FedEx and UPS and
whatever that do bulk shipping and they
do it at a more reasonable price perhaps
than a FedEx or UPS. And I just recently
found out that the Greyhound you know
those bus lines that are ubiquitous in the
U.S., maybe other countries. I don't know,
you tell me. But the Greyhound,
they ship bulk items and it is supposed
to be for a cheaper rate. So I am
definitely going to check that out.
This is not a Greyhound commercial. I have not
tried their service yet either. But I
got the tip from a trusted source and I was
told that this is something people do
specifically when they're moving. And I
thought what a great way to get my books
across to where they need to go. Now if
you're shipping your books, don't forget
to consider the size of the box because
some places will change their rates
based on the dimensions of the packaging.
And if you're not shipping your books, it is
still important to think about the size
box you purchase or you seal from the
office because the bigger the box you
get and pack full of books, the more of a
nightmare your moving experience is
going to be. And I found this out the
hard way. Now this might sound totally
obvious to everybody else but I'm just
sort of person who gets to a point in
the packing and the moving process where
I just get so tired and over it that I
find the biggest box I can get and I
just start to throw things into it. And
more often than not those things are books.
And then moving day comes and my
friends and I are like, can't pick up
this box. There's no way this box is
getting moved. It's a boulder. And often
what happens when I'm faced with the
prospect of having to repack this big
box on moving day because nobody will
move it, is I will reconsider the
importance of bringing them along with me.
Now certainly some of these books are
books I'm never going to read again or
that weren't that important to me.
But often in the mix there will be books
that I really liked and that I will
later on down the line
learn to miss and to regret having left behind.
I've had it happened to me before
where I was just like, that book had a
lot of sentimental value. I can't believe
I just left it behind and let it go. But
when you're in that moment when you're
moving, moving is a huge transition.
It can be physically and emotionally
exhausting. And even if you're a bookish
individual and books are always at the
forefront of your mind, in those moments
that spot might be taken up by just
wanting to get through with it, to get
through the transition and move on with
your lives and then think about it later.
Like, oh maybe I'll buy that book later,
maybe I'll be able to recover it somehow.
It doesn't happen. So if you're moving
your books, try to park them in small
boxes, make it easy on everybody involved
in the moving process including yourself.
So that they're lightweight and easy to move
and you're not left having to reconsider
whether you should bring them at all.
But there is great value in really
considering which books you do want to
take with you on your journey and which
you won't mind saying goodbye to
because it will make that whole process,
the packing and moving, way easier.
And what I want to say about that is that the
earlier you start thinking about which
books you don't want to take with you,
the better. Because let's face it, it is
really difficult to actually let go of a book.
Now I have found it helpful to sort
of gently break into the process by
getting rid of my guide books, for instance.
Books that are published on an
annual basis or on a timeline, they're
released every year, stuff like that,
where it would behoove me to buy the
updated version and to you know either
donate or trash the old version because
I have some stuff sometimes that's from
like 2013 and I'm like what even exists
from 2013 anymore. So that has helped me
to sort of detach myself from these
books I've been hoarding. I like the idea
of one day having every wall in my
living space covered in books but there
are some books that really aren't going
to add anything to my future 'beauty and
the beast' library. So. Okay, so, thoe a
are some of the ways I'm going to help
myself move this big book collection and
do it right for once. But if you had to do
this before, if you've had to move your
book collection and you have some tips
that cannot be ignored, please do tell.
