15 Black Mirror References You Might Have Missed in "Black Museum"
The episode of Black Museum Netlflixs Black Mirror combined three stories into one, but the menagerie of crime that framed those stories had a lot more to tell than what the plot could give.
Lots of items in the museum were callbacks to previous Black Mirror episodes, and the entire episode felt like a spot the reference for die-hard fans and binge-watchers alike.
Heres a list of the ones the stood out. Spoilers for all of Black Mirror season 4 follow.
1. The BRB Connect charging station references an episode title
Aside from the fact that an all-electric car service station is pretty cool, the name of the company is an allusion to the season 2 episode Be Right Back, which starred Hayley Atwell and Domnhall Gleeson.
2. Victoria Skillane, the crew of the USS Callister, and the White Christmas murder.
The picture in the back is Victoria Skillane, the protagonist (and murder voyeur) who was repeatedly mind-wiped and tortured in the White Bear Justice Park in the season 2 episode White Bear.
The Double Suicide headline on the wall of screens potentially refers to the forced poisoning and suicide of Harry and Jennifer in the first part of White Christmas. Similarly, the Cloning Without Consent panel may refer to Dalys DNA-hoarding and digital cloning of his coworkers in USS Callister..
3. The deadly robotic pollinators from Hated in the Nation
These troublesome robo-bees were programmed to murder the three-hundred thousand–plus people who hashtagged #DeathTo disliked personalities in the season 3 finale, Hated in the Nation.
4. The shattered Arkangel unit from Arkangel
This is the parental spying tablet Sara uses to assault her mother Marie in the season 4 episode Arkangel.
5. The bloodied bathtub from Crocodile
Mia goes to extreme (and futile) lengths to protect her reputation in Crocodile, including murdering Anan in this blood-splattered bathtub.
6. The hanging artist from The National Anthem
The hanging man in overalls to the right of this screenshot is a dummy recreation of Carlton Bloom, the artist who captured and threatened Princess Susannah in the very first Black Mirror episode.
After he released the princess, he hanged himself, hence the macabre display.
7. The Hunters outfit from White Bear
This is the terrifying mask, red coat, and gun owned by Baxter, the lead actor at the White Bear Justice Park in White Bear.
8. Dalys DNA-cloning device from USS Callister
Robert Daly used many of his coworkerss DNA to populate his twisted Space Fleet game, but his most heinous act was to use his bosss sons lollipop to clone the child and toss him out of an airlock.
His machine, complete with the unfinished lollipop, is in Rolo Hayness possession.
9. Smart Home cookies from White Christmas
On the left side of this screenshot are a series of white ovals suspended in a case — these are cookie-holders, the likes of which were used to store human consciousnesses to disastrous ends in White Christmas.
10. Rolo Haynes used to work at St. Junipers Hospital
The name of Rolos former employers should be familiar to anyone who was a fan of season 3s Emmy-winning romance episode San Junipero.
11. And Nish mentions uploading old people to the cloud
Later in the episode, Nish asks if a certain technology is similar to uploading old people to the cloud, which is pretty much the plot of San Junipero.
12. One of the rats Rolo uses for his demonstration is named Kenny
Kenny is the name of the protagonist (and later confirmed pedophile) in season 3s Shut Up and Dance.
13. ...and the other rat is named Hector
Not-coincidentally, the other rat is Hector, named for Kennys partner in literal crime from Shut Up and Dance.
14. 15 Million Merits is the name of Jacks comic book
Jack from the Monkey Needs A Hug segment, is seen enjoying a graphic novel called 15 Million Merits, which is the title of a season 1 episode.
The art on the cover resembles Bing, the leading man of that episode, in his virtual avatar form.
15. The inside of the 15 Million Merits comic shows the climax of that episode
The comic shows Bing going on an explosive rant and features characters that perfectly resemble both Bing and the Hot Shot judges from 15 Million Merits.
