marketing strategies and social media strategies and website strategies that
will help you build your business. First of all what is SEO Yoast you ask? If your
website was created in WordPress then SEO Yoast is a must-have plug-in that
you will want to use that will not only help you with your blog post but all of
your website pages in general and it will help you get more subscribers and
get more visitors and help your website as a whole be a much better performing
site for you and your business. So SEO Yoast is a
very complex and powerful plugin for your WordPress website and for the sake
of time I don't have time to go into all of the different settings and features
that SEO Yoast offers so for the sake of time what we're going to do is we're
going to focus just on your Wordpress blog post and how to fill in the SEO
Yoast form fields that are located underneath your blog post article and
I'm going to share with you what you need to be putting into those fields in
order to help boost your blog article and get more visibility in front of your
ideal target market. So without further ado let's head over and I'll show you
how that is done by demonstrating one of our articles that were about to be
posting into our blog. Okay here we are with a blog post that we are getting set
up and ready to post in our blog. By the time you see this video eTip this post
will already be up and running in our blog so go ahead and check it out if you
are interested in hearing more about call to action. So as you can see the
title of this post is called Defining Call to Action and Why Your Website Must
Use Them. We're at the preliminary stages here but I wanted to show you how to
fill out the Yoast SEO portion of your blog post which aside from the article
itself is one of the most important parts that you want to be paying
attention to when you add in a new blog article. Now if you are not seeing this
window there's a few things that could be happening the first one is make sure
that you have Yoast SEO plug-in actually installed in your WordPress blog and
that it is also activated so once those two things are done, if you're still not
seeing this, this window might be collapsed so right now it's opened up
and if I click on this arrow you'll see that it all closed on me and so you need
to click on this arrow to open it back up again.
And if you're not seeing this at all then you want to check up at the top of
your page under screen options and make sure that Yoast SEO is checked off and
that should get you up and running where you will be able to now access
this window. So Yoast has put in some things on our behalf to help us along.
The whole primary purpose of Yoast is to add in the title tag and the description tag
those are the two biggest things and it is doing everything it can to help us
with that effort. So you'll notice that this little snippet here is giving me a
preview of what my article would look like if somebody were doing a search in
Google and this is what would come up if they were searching for say
call-to-action and there's a few things that are not quite right here. Now the
first one is that you can see that there are ellipse tags here and that
means that our title has gone over Google's character limit. Typically
Google gives you about 60 characters to fill in this space before the ellipses
show up and you want to avoid the ellipses because people won't know what
that is. So the reason why those ellipse has shown up is because Yoast
has automatically added them in for us based on information derived from our
article. So you can see there's a title and the page and the actual title
article here and there our site names so it's adding on eVision Media as well so
typically you're going to want to override that so I'm going to do that by
adding in our title tag manually and let's take a look and see what happens
so it's still the same title tag but it has removing our eVision Media at the
end if I had added in eVision Media here you can see that right away at that
point in time is when we go from green to orange and orange means that we don't
really want that. That's because because Google is now truncating it so for this
article I'm going to remove that but it is a good idea to have either your
author name or your business name tagging on at the end of that title and
just to give it a little bit of extra SEO juice but in this case
I won't be able to do that. Now the other part that we want to pay attention to is
the description. So your description is typically, if you leave this part
empty. What Yoast will do is just grab the first several sentences from your
post. This is usually not a good idea because often the first couple of
sentences don't get into the actual benefits of telling the reader why
they should be reading that post so we definitely want to click on that and
edit this and so I've already written out what I wanted to put there so I'm
just going to copy that in and paste it in and now instead of a bunch of garbage
we are being more specific and concise about a CTA, short for call to
action critical on every website page. So as you can see not only are we talking
about call to action but I have other keywords in here as well that are very
useful like website and business, commerce, SEO, marketing, conversion funnel
all of those are good keywords that I want to also add in to go with my
article. Now the Meta Description is about 300 characters max. It actually
just got upgraded of a few months ago back in December of 2017 so your
Meta description can be anywhere between 50 and 300 characters you can
take it right up to 300 characters as long as it's nice and concise and still
tells the viewer who has done a search on Google why should they
click on that article and read more of it. Now the biggest thing that a
lot of people get a little bit confused about is the focus keyword. Now I had
already put in our focus keyword here of being call-to-action and the reason for
that is that is the main purpose and intention of this article is all about
the call to action that we are wanting to put on our website and so
because that is what the main reason for this article is, that
is the keyword to put in there. What some people get a little bit confused by
is this focus keyword is not the same as your typical meta keywords that used
to be extremely popular years ago with the search engines. Us web developers
would put masses amount of keywords into the Meta to go along with the Meta title
and Meta Description but since then it's basically been very much degraded and
most search engines don't use Meta Keywords any longer to help position you
in the search engine rankings and so basically people just don't bother with
them anymore. Every once in a while I still add them in if I have an
opportunity to do so because there might be some remote directories or
search engines out there that could be still using Meta Keywords but for the
most part it's not worth your while. Don't confuse yourself between a Meta
Keyword where you would be having a whole row, a whole list of keywords. So if
this were the Meta Keywords I would go 'call to action' and then CTA
and then marketing and then business and website you know the whole nine yards
then I would spell it right - and so that's not the case here. A focused
keyword is one word or a couple of words as a phrase on what you are hoping
your target market is searching for in the search engines in order for them to
find your article. Now there is a tool that Yoast provides for us to help us
with this keyword this focus keyword and it's called Yoast Google Suggest
Expander and interestingly enough as I was preparing for this session and
adding in our article, at first we had this article called defining CTA and why
your website must use them and the reason for that is we wanted to keep the
article title nice and short by using CTA instead of call to
action and so what I did was I used this Yoast Google Suggest Expander to see, is
CTA what my target market is going to be typing in the search engines in order
for them to learn more about call to action? And I was quite surprised to find
out there is absolutely nothing here in the in those search results or what
people typically search for. It turns out that CTA is more about bus trackers and
train trackers and maps and blue lines and things like that. So that is what
prompted me to change the reference of our title from CTA to Call to Action and
if I click Submit this now gives me much more accurate results as this is what I
want people to be searching for in hopes for them to find our article that helps
them define what a call to action is. So use that link Yoast and Google Suggest
Expander I'll have it down in the comment section below so that you can
use that to help you determine what your focus keyword should be here. And one
last thing is just to share about the tags here over on the right-hand side
because again this can get confused with meta keywords. It can get confused with
a focused keyword so the tags here have absolutely
nothing to do with the search engines. It is not related to SEO at all all. It is
therefore a way to categorize and help your users find more articles
related to those specific topics. And so just keep this at minimum. You don't have
to override these with a thousand different tags which honestly I used to
do myself until I found out about this and so our tags here is just
call-to-action, conversion funnel and CTA and just leave it at that. Just keep it
down to exactly what the topic of this piece is. Choosing a perfect focus
keyword is not an exact science so don't panic about it in trying to figure out
what to put here. Our goal is to be in the green zone and
if I click on save draft I'm hoping that my SEO will turn green it hasn't quite
yet so that means I have a little bit more work to do. What I want to do here
is come down here and it will tell me what problems I have that I should be
working on so it says that the focus keyboard doesn't appear in the first
paragraph of the copy make sure the topic is clear immediately and yes that
is very valid you want to make sure that your focus keyword is up in the top we
start saying it in the second line as well as in the third line but Yoast
wants it here in the first line but I'm going to let that go. I don't want to put
the focus keyword up at the top if it doesn't make any sense as the user is
reading it either. It's saying that the keyword density is 0.2 percent which is
too low so I should find more instances where I can add in call-to-action and
saying that the Meta Description has been specified but it does not contain
the focus keyword and that's kind of interesting because it certainly does
right there but and it could be because I have
hyphens there so at the end of the day you do want to make sure that
everything is working but don't panic either like I already know that the
words call-to-action is in the title I know that it's in my description and
everything so sometimes Yoast is not quite it's giving us false positives and
it's more likely because I have the - there so I'm not going to worry about it
too terribly much. In a perfect world I would like to see that orange colour be
green but I will play around with this a little bit more and see if I can make
that happen and so as you can see using that focus keyword is a great benefit it
does help quite a bit in helping us position our blog articles so that we
can make sure that it is seen ideally by our ideal target market but at the end
of the day sometimes it's not a perfect science but do what you can and any
little bit of effort does help in the long run to get you higher up in those
search results so that your ideal target market will find you. Now online
