Hello. Today I want to talk about ceasing to try to escape.
I've spoken with many, many people over the years; and I would find a recurring
theme with many, many people...is that they are studying non-duality and seeking
enlightenment to escape. They are looking for a cure of what ails them. For example,
someone might be depressed... experiencing depression...maybe even on medication for
depression. And they are looking at... they're looking at non-duality and for
enlightenment to cure them of their depression. And unfortunately, it doesn't
work this way for primarily two reasons... that come to mind. The first is that
there is no escape. There is no way to skirt what is. Really, the only hope you
have is to delve into the feeling...fully experiencing it. If you're depressed,
really dive into that depression. Really feel it. Quit trying to get away from it.
And then as you're delving into it... you're just seeing...you're aware of
what's there and you're also kind of looking for the cause. You're looking for
the roots. And when you understand what is going on, things may change on their
own automatically. You may discover that it is some preconceived notion or belief...
maybe that was conditioned from an early age...and that might be the root
of the issue. And when it becomes a conscious awareness of - this is
the root - you're able to look at the root and go - is this really true? Is this
really valid? And in really dissecting and
investigating and analyzing what's going on, it may change. It's like the ignorance
is seen through. We're ignoring. We're not seeing what's going on...that's why it
repeats. But if we really looked at and ceased ignoring what's going on...you know...
ignorance is dispelled with understanding. And so, a new
understanding occurs and then actions and reactions change. Now the other
reason that came to mind that...you know... trying to escape won't work is you can't
use non-duality or enlightenment for personal utility. What I mean by that is
you can't use enlightenment for something. As long as you're seeking
enlightenment for personal gain, what you're really doing is you're
reinforcing the illusion of this "me". Enlightenment is seeing through the "me".
It's a shattering of the identification with a "me". However, as long as you are
trying to get enlightenment or study non- duality in order to be cured of
suffering...relieved...you know...basically, personal gain,
then what you're really doing is you're inflating and strengthening this "I"
that you believe yourself to be. And on top of that, until you get this
idea of enlightenment that will cure you,
you're putting yourself at odds with what is. And so, you're constantly gonna
be hyper aware of your suffering. And then it's this/it becomes a vicious
cycle of your hyper aware of the suffering and the "me" is trying to escape
it and the "me" is seeking enlightenment so it'll be cured...and you know it
just inflates and strengthens and energizes this "me". Enlightenment cannot
be used. It's not a personal gain. As long as you try to gain from enlightenment,
you're actually pushing it away. So...it just doesn't work that way. And so the
message I'm trying to get across today is cease trying to escape. Cease trying
to transcend or get out of.... That's not what enlightenment is about. It's not
really what non-duality is about...because in non-duality there's no other. Where
are you gonna go? There is no out. There's just this and the sooner that we come to
terms with this, the sooner we are no longer resisting and denying and
struggling against what is...and then suffering decreases. So I hope this helps.
