Eliminate fault masking with PSRswitch - Duration: 3:33.

The PSRswitch safety switch is intelligent. It permanently monitors the channels for faults and,

in contrast to conventional switches, prevents fault masking in your system.

With the introduction of the new safety standard EN ISO 14119,

the prevention of fault masking is becoming increasingly relevant. But what actually is fault masking?

The danger zones of a machine are safeguarded by doors, for example,

each of which is monitored by a conventional safety switch with floating contacts.

The contacts of the safety switches are connected in series via two channels to a safety relay.

If one door is opened, for example for maintenance work,

the flow of current is interrupted in both channels.

The downstream safety relay detects this interruption and therefore a potential danger situation.

The machine stops. When the door is then reclosed, the machine can be restarted via the restart switch.

Assuming that the cable is damaged and a short circuit has occurred in one channel of the redundant switch system,

this short circuit would initially go unnoticed during operation.

If, however, door 2 is then opened, the machine still stops,

because the safety relay continues to detect the opening of the door

via the first channel and switches off only one channel.

The different signals in the first and second channel do not meet the expectations of the safety relay,

which identifies this as a fault and prevents the machine from restarting.

By chance, the machine could restart if another door is opened and closed again,

because the conventional safety switch on that door interrupts the signal in both channels and resets the fault status of the safety relay.

The machine continues to run after the restart,

but the defect on the channel of the second door remains and is thus "masked".

This problem will become a danger if a short circuit now also occurs on channel 1 of the second door

and the door is no longer monitored from a safety perspective.

The machine would continue to run if the second door was to be opened.

Due to this potential danger situation, the standard for safety switches

and the technical report limit the performance level of cascaded safety switches with floating contacts.

This safety loophole can be closed very easily with the PSRswitch non-contact safety switch from Phoenix Contact.

The PSRswitch permanently monitors both channels for faults.

If a fault occurs in one channel, the switch uses the second channel to shut down safely and prevents reconnection.

This fault detection system enables the highest performance level – PL e – to be reached in the cascade.

Further non-safety-relevant status information on the switches

– such as "door open" and "door closed" – are recorded via the integrated diagnostics channel.

The PSRmini safety relay transmits the diagnostic data to the controller via IO-Link.

The data can then be evaluated centrally there, and faults can be detected directly.

I think as one gets older, one becomes more aware of the extent to which my

generation has screwed up the planet, and I'm thinking about future generations.

And in particular, my wife and I have just recently had our first grandchild,

so we have a grandson who's now 14 months old, and looking at him and

thinking about his world does induce a sense of responsibility in people of my

generation. We have to take action now to make sure that his world will be more

safe, more sustainable, and he and his children can have a better world to live in.

So the aim of a university like this one is to have impact for society, and that

means both locally, regionally and globally.

One area where the University of Edinburgh has been particularly active

and I think has many reasons for being proud of its track record

is taking urgent action to tackle climate change

and its environmental and societal impacts.

Climate change action features everywhere in the University of Edinburgh,

right across our teaching curriculum, right across our research and right across all of our activities

and all of our policies. We aim to be carbon neutral by 2040;

we have very detailed plans in order to achieve that.

So for example we're aiming to reduce our energy usage;

we're aiming to have responsible methods of travel and communication

and also making sure that all of our activities all of our development plans

all of our building programs

feature environmental sustainability as one of their core principles.

So I think every member of staff and every student and alumnus and friend of

the University of Edinburgh can contribute to tackling climate change,

partly just through awareness and partly by factoring the issues of

sustainability into their thinking and into their plans.
