finally we are live on Twitter so feel free to share your comments and connect

this year first we are giving away swag bags from colleges and universities here
in Florida to some of our attendees so stay tuned till the end of the session
to learn more about that and also next week you will receive a follow-up email
with information about applying for a $1,000 scholarship this scholarship is
being awarded by the Florida Association of Educational Data Systems so we want to
thank them for their sponsorship and definitely encourage you to apply if you
are attending today's session now I'd like to introduce our speaker
Ashley Thimmes Ashley is a statewide project coordinator for the Florida
Virtual Campus here in Tallahassee in this position she is the expert in k-12
content and takes pride in providing quality services to students in Florida
she conducts workshops presentations and trainings for all of our k-12 audience
Ashley graduated from the Florida State University with a degree in education
and she's always been passionate about helping students Ashley we're excited to
hear from you today
thanks so much Nashla I'm really excited to be here today
this afternoon I'm going to give you guys a quick overview of what
FloridaShines has available so FloridaShines serves all students in high schools
through post-secondary and beyond and is the student hub of innovative
educational services FloridaShines is categorized but we buy what we like to
call buckets so we have our planning for college bucket our succeed in college
bucket and our finding a career bucket so ultimately it's the journey that
you're going to take out a student having these three buckets allows us to
better associate with our audience so as a high school student you will mostly
focus on the go to college bucket however you may also be interested in
exploring in the post-secondary and career world through the succeed in
college and find a career bucket to get us started I'm going to talk more about
the go to college area oftentimes we find that students are unsure of where
they may want to attend college or some students might have an idea of where
they want to go but they really don't know much information about that
particular institution the college and university profiles is a wonderful place
to start FloridaShines is connected with all 40
public colleges and universities here in Florida and we provide this great
information through the profiles once you click on search now you open the
doors to a plethora of information a great feature the profile offers is
allowing you to search using specific criteria maybe you want to attend a
small university add that to the search criteria and you will be able to find
what you're looking for if you are interested in learning the basic high
level information about an institution it's all at your fingertips here are
some great examples of options that allow you to dig a little deeper here is
a screen shot of using student body in your search criteria this gives detailed
information about the student body at North Florida Community College I would
find this fascinating to learn about this type of information
at each institution another great example is cost and
financial aid often times students are unaware of how much it can cost to
attend college this gives a breakdown of all of that information and allows you
to keep your options open okay so this is the coolest part in my opinion but I
think it's important to learn a lot about the campus you know the campus
life so for example you can search Greek life marching bands on campus housing
and it really gives you a glimpse into what the institution is all about so
this feature of the profiles is probably the most important here you can search
what types of programs that institution offers oftentimes student have a have a
specific program and school in mind but not always does an institution offer
that program it's a must for you to do your research and make sure you don't
fall in love with an institution that doesn't actually have the program you're
interested in studying so all of this information in the profiles is actually
updated at least once a year and it updated by the individual institutions
themselves so we make sure to keep all of that data nice and up-to-date for
students so FloridaShines has some wonderful resources available to you and
that is and this is another great example so this is our high school
academic progress evaluation this allows you to check your progress towards
graduation and to figure out what classes you may be missing or what areas
you really need to bump those grades up so we actually receive all of our
student data from the Department of Education who received it from each of
your districts so we again try to keep the information up-to-date for you guys
so this screenshot is inside the evaluation itself what you are viewing
is the standard option for graduation do keep in mind though that there are
different tracks you can take all of which are reflected within the
evaluation so a really great resource are within this on academic progress
evaluation is the college and career-ready tab so it shows how ready
you are for college admissions the University requirements are updated
every year so they were all so they're always current one thing to keep in mind
is that even though colleges don't have requirements for an AA we still provide
information about a recommended GPA to be successful as we move forward here is
another evaluation that we offer through FloridaShines this is the Bright
Futures eligibility evaluation this allows you to check which bright future
scholarship you may be eligible for or what areas you need to focus on in order
to be eligible this particular screenshot is on how it would appear
when you're checking eligibility for the Florida Medallion Scholar the Florida
Academic Scholar and the Gold Seal Vocational Scholar it's really great
information because it highlights exactly what you're missing your GPA and
your courses this next slide is a screenshot of the Gold Seal Cape
Scholars since this scholarship is based on certification in service hours the
display looks different so again all of the data that we receive come from the
Department of Education we do received data daily but I do want to remind
everyone that depending on how often your district sends the data will
determine how often we are able to update our records so we all know it is
really important for you to plan early and even start planning as early as
middle school the college and career planner is a great place for you to
start when preparing for life after high school the planner provides detailed
information about high school graduation requirements Bright Futures details
updates and requirements from the State University System the Florida College
System and the Career and Technical Center's the best part about this
planner is the last place last page is actually a writable PDF so you can print
it out and really make yourself up this document is also updated each year
and we work with the Department of Education to make sure that you receive
the most up-to-date information we know courses aren't everything
you know you need in order to think about life after high school so we have
created some college checklist we have broken the list down grade by grade and
listed ideas suggestions and things to keep in mind when planning your path to
graduation we also linked out to MyCareerShines
ACT and College Board for easy access to important websites
academic success is important so we have created worksheets to help you excel in
the classroom each worksheet focuses on a different topic to help you think
outside of the box so to end this presentation I'm going to talk about
MyCareerShines which is our online comprehensive career advising system
when you visit MyCareerShines.org this is where you'll land so there are
several options to choose from as you can see when you click on one of the
blue boxes you can start exploring possible interests you may have so to
give you guys an example of what's behind the blue boxes I clicked on grow
design and build things these pages provide you with information related to
career clusters career pathways jobs education and salary we feel this is a
great way for you to better associate with your interests and explore your
options once you have had a chance to explore the different types of careers
it's time to create a MyCareerShines account simply click the register or
login button to begin once you have created your account which is super easy
and only takes a few moments you can start your journey
and just to give you guys a little look into what the system itself looks like I
have a good screenshot here for you of a sample account and as you can see there
are three assessment inventories you can complete and tons of wonderful resources
and tools to help you achieve your career goals for more information and to
register today please visit MyCareerShines.org
all right Ashley thank you so much for that great overview we really appreciate
your expertise and sharing all of those resources and tools through
MyCareerShines and FloridaShines if you don't mind staying on the line with us
we do have a couple of questions from our audience
yes of course so the first one Ashley you talked about Bright Futures
eligibility and making sure students are in staying on track with that do you
have to have an account to view your Bright Futures eligibility no you do not
have to create an account once you visit FloridaShines.org and you visit the pay
for college page that's where the Bright Futures eligibility is located on the
only credentials that you will need is your school district your last name and
either your FSIN or your social security number with an X at the end and
if you have any problems while you're trying to log in you can actually
contact our help desk by emailing help@flvc.org org that's help@flvc.org
all right very good to know that they can log in and get help if they need
help with that I'm actually the next couple questions are related to
MyCareerShines which you just covered do students need an account or do they need to make
a new MyCareerShines account each year No so a really cool thing about
MyCareerShines is once you've actually created an account it stays with you for
life so which is pretty crazy to think about but yes no once you've created
that account it stays with you
all right so that's good to know they can keep that forever
the next question related to MyCareerShines Ashley you talked about
assessments and students taking assessments to learn more about
themselves can they retake the assessments can they take them more than
once yes you can actually um you can take them as many times as you out you
would like but I would say it maybe give it some time in between you know each
time that you do take the assessments so that way you know if if you want to
answer them a little bit different I just wouldn't take them you know every
day for three weeks I wouldn't take them I would just give it a little time in
between
absolutely so that's great to know because your interests change from time
to time now actually the last question we have is related to some of the other
success resources you share where can students find the college and career
planners and the checklist you talked about yes so those can be found if
you visit the go-to College section of the website on FloridaShines.org and
once you've clicked on the go to college tab you can click again on get ready for
college and both the planner and the checklist are all available there and
they are for available for immediate download and also on that page you can
also find the high school academic progress evaluation as well on the get
ready for college page of on FloridaShines.org
all right Ashley thank you so much the next set of questions are really about
our giveaway in our scholarship so I want to talk about that by joining us
today you have been enter to win a swag bag from our Florida colleges and
universities so will be we will be drawing names at the end of the night
and we will announce winners on all of our social media tomorrow so please
follow us @FLShines on Twitter Facebook and Instagram again that's
FLShines and good luck if you've entered after this session next week you will
also receive information about applying for the $1,000 scholarship that I
mentioned at the beginning of this session so be on the lookout for that
email with instructions and we definitely encourage you to apply now
Ashley on behalf of our team here we are so thankful that you were able to share
your expertise about FloridaShines so thank you so much for spending the
afternoon with us and sharing your resources and tools yes thank you guys
