Susan Westwood: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 7:03.

Susan Westwood: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Susan Westwood, AKA "South Park Susan," turned herself into the police after being filmed ranting at two African American women.

Susan Westwood is a North Carolina woman who was filmed confronting two Africa -American sisters, Leisa Meria Garris and Mary Michelle Garris, while they were waiting for AAA in a parking lot in Charlotte.

Westwood was filmed by the sisters in a video that soon went viral, with internet users dubbing her "South Park Susan.

" Westwood has since turned herself in to the police after a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Here's what you need to know.

Westwood Called the Police on the Sisters for No Apparent Reason.

On October 26, Westwood confronted the two sisters for no apparent reason, and then proceeded to harass them while they waited for AAA in a parking lot of Charlotte, North Carolina, near the apartment complex where one of the sisters lives.

It's unclear how, exactly, the altercation began.

But in the earliest video posted by Garris, one of the sisters can be heard saying that she feels threatened, to which Westwood replied that she was hot and beautiful and white, before proceeding to ask the sisters if they live at the apartment complex.

"Why do we feel like we need to be here, like, on this, like, beautiful place?" Westwood continued.

When one of the sisters replied with another question, asking why Westwood felt the need to be in their "space," Westwood answered, "Well, I live here.

I pay rent.".

Westwood later added, a bit nonsensically, "My kids go to Meyer's Park, so I want to make sure there's nothing going on…and why are you hanging out? Where do you live?".

Westwood Asked the Girls a Series of Racist Questions, Including Asking "Where Their Baby Daddies" Were.

Throughout the recorded videos, Westwood makes a series of apparent racist remarks, including, "I'm hot, I'm beautiful, I'm 51, what we going to talk about tonight? Being hot? Being beautiful? Being white? My new weave?".

She continued later, Is your boyfriend here? Is your baby daddy here? Nobody cares.

I'm white and I'm hot, so what are you doing here?".

Throughout the video, while the sisters continued to reference Westwood as "ma'am", Westwood replied by mocking them in racist stereotypes of African Americans.

"I make $125,000 a year!" she declared at one point.

She talked about her whiteness too many times to count throughout the videos, saying at one point: "I'm white, f*ck off…I'm white, b*tch.".

Westwood Falsely Claimed the Girls Were Trying to Break Into an Apartment Complex.

First, one of the sisters called 911, noting that Westwood was making racist threats and making them uncomfortable while they waited for AAA.

Later, Westwood called the police, herself.

During her 911 call, Westwood falsely claimed that the two women were trying to break into her apartment complex, one that she claimed she paid over a thousand dollars in rent monthly for.

On the 911 call, Westwood reportedly said, "There are folks that are trying to break in.

They're trying to get in the apartments.

I'm trying to do it in a very clandestine manner because it's actually on Fairview Road," Westwood told police, reports ABC.

"They are actually people that I've never seen here before—but they are African American.".

Prior to Turning Herself in to the Police, Westwood Was Fired From Her Job.

Prior to the event, Westwood worked at Spectrum Enterprise, per a screenshot of her LinkedIn, which has since been deleted.

However, since then she has been terminated, a point that wsa confirmed by Patrick Paterno, Director of Communications of the Carolina Region for Charter Communications.

In a statement, he said, "The incident recorded in Charlotte is a blatant violation of Charter's code of conducts and clearly disregards the company's commitment to inclusion and respectful behavior.

As such, Ms.

Westwood's employment with the company has been terminated, effective immediately.".

Westwood Now Faces Four Criminal Counts for Assault and Communicating Threats.

Westwood currently faces a series of charges, having initially been slapped with an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, as well as "misuse of the 911 system.

" Since turning herself in, she has been charged with four counts of simple assault and communicating threats.

Elissa Slotkin: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 8:51.

Elissa Slotkin: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Elissa Slotkin is a former Obama staffer who is now running for Congress as a Democrat in Michigan's 8th District.

Slotkin is different from many other Democrats running for Congress this cycle, in that she doesn't directly identify with the notion of "resistance." To TIME, she said, "Since Ronald Reagan we have had this assumption in the United States that the Republicans are the party of the military, the Republicans are the party of patriotism, the Republicans are the party of American values.

And if there was ever a moment for a strategic shift, it's now.".

Slotkin first worked under the Bush administration before working for the Obama administration.

Here's what you need to know.

Slotkin Is a Former CIA Analyst Who Served Three Tours in Iraq in the Early 2000's.

Prior to announcing her bid for Congress, Slotkin attended Cornell University as an undergraduate, then Columbia University for  graduate school.

She cited her experience being in New York during the September 11 attacks as having a huge impact on her decision to go into civil service.

After she graduated from Columbia, she then served as a CIA analyst throughout three tours in Iraq.

Following her work with the CIA, she served on the National Security Council as director for Iraq underneath George W.

Bush's administration.

She then stayed on when Barack Obama was elected president, and eventually served as Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Obama administration.

Slotkin now lives in Michigan, on a farm in Holly, MI, running her own consulting business.

Slotkin's Husband, Dave, Served as a Colonel in the Army for 30 Years.

Slotkin's husband, Dave, has also served the country as a colonel in the U.S.

army for 30 years.

Dave was reportedly an Apache helicopter pilot in the First Gulf War, Korea, and Kosovo, and he also served two tours in Iraq.

Dave has been a constant presence throughout Slotkin's social media during her campaigning for Congress in the last year.

Slotkin and Dave actually met while they were both serving in Iraq, according to a video Slotkin tweeted, in which she wrote, "My husband Dave and I met in Iraq, when I was doing my third tour, serving alongside our military and diplomats.

He was a colonel in the Army on his fourth tour in combat.

We're proud to be a service family.".

Dave said in the video, "You can bring service to your community and your country by voting in November." Dave has two daughters of which Slotkin is a stepmother.

One of those daughters is in the Army, and the other is a working physician.

Slotkin Decided to Run for Congress For Two Reasons: Health Care & Partisan Ugliness.

According to TIME, Slotkin's two major motivating factors that inspired her to run for Congress were the current state of health care, and the increasingly partisan ugliness in D.C.

She said, "For me, as someone who worked for both Republicans and Democrats, [the atmosphere after the 2016 election] felt so different, and so ugly, and so unbecoming of this country.".

For the issue of health care, Slotkin had some personal experience to impact her political beliefs.

Her mother, who had breast cancer when she was a young mother, struggled to find affordable coverage for herself before she passed away because of her pre-existing conditions.

Slotkin noted to TIME that her opponent, Mike Bishop, was a visible and smiling presence at the White House when Trump signed the bill repealing the Affordable Care Act.

She said, "It was like Christmas for him.

And I turned to my husband and I said, 'No, You don't get to do that.

You don't get to ignore your constituents and vote against their interests and keep your job.'".

Slotkin Has Distinguished Her Campaign by Reflecting a More Moderate Democratic Platform Than Other Progressives.

Since one of the reasons she ran for Congress in the first place was because of how shocked and disgusted she was by the partisan ugliness in D.C., it might not be surprising that Slotkin has built her campaign around a mild friendliness to the Republican party.

To TIME, she said, "I don't believe all Republicans are bad.".

Slotkin's father is a Republican, and she also noted that her in-laws are supporters of Trump.

She added, "I don't consider myself part of the Resistance because that's against something, and you have to be for something.".

Slotkin's desire to cross the partisan aisle is also a noted strategy towards the region of the country where she's running for office.

She said,  "In the Midwest, we cannot stand the vitriol.

People's neighbors see the signs and they walk on eggshells around each other.

Moms tell me they don't want to talk to other moms when they drop their kids off at school.

Thanksgiving dinner is super uncomfortable.

Midwesterners can't stand that.".

Slotkin Is Running on a Platform of Health Care, Education, and Economic Opportunity, in Order to Keep the 'American Dream in Michigan' Alive.

Some of Slotkin's largest issues that she's campaigned upon have been health care reform and education reform in Michigan.

Specifically, she cites the need for affordable health care and access to affordable prescription medication.

As for education reform, she believes in investing in educational systems "from the bottom up.".

Slotkin writes on her official campaign site, "College shouldn't be considered a luxury, or a requirement for success, and should be affordable for those who are interested.

We need more options — more certification programs and college apprenticeship programs that are paired with the specific job opportunities available right now in our state — to ensure that we are educating and training our young people to contribute to growing Michigan's economy.".

Commonly Confused Words Part One - Duration: 6:54.

From VOA Learning English, this is Everyday Grammar.

Ashley: Before we get started today, Adam, I wanted to ask you about your weekend at

home!

Adam: It was great, thanks!

But the drive was a little tiring.

Chicago is a lot further away than I thought.

Ashley: Sorry, you mean...Chicago is a lot farther away than you thought.

Adam: Yes, that is what I said.

Ashley: No, you said "further."

In American English, "further" is usually used for non-physical or figurative distances.

"Farther" is the correct word when talking about actual physical distance - or distance

that you can measure.

Adam: Non-physical distances?

Can you give me an example?

Ashley: Sure.

If you cannot decide on which presidential candidate to support, you might look further

into their positions on important issues.

Here there is no actual, measurable distance.

Adam: Okay, I guess that makes sense.

Farther and further are words that English learners - and even native English speakers

- often confuse.

The English language is full of commonly confused words.

These words may sound the same but mean different things.

Or maybe, they are spelled the same but mean different things.

Let's look at some of these commonly confused words.

We will start with the two words we just mentioned: farther and further.

The word farther is usually used as an adverb.

In American English, we say farther when talking about a physical, measurable distance.

For example, "We walked farther than we had planned."

The word further has several meanings.

It can be used as an adverb, adjective, and even a verb.

As an adverb, further means "to a greater extent."

For example, "The scientists are looking further into the new research."

As an adjective, further means "more or additional."

For example, "Further research is needed to reach a conclusion."

Notice how there is no physical, measurable distance in these examples.

Further can also be a verb.

In its verb form, it means "to help the progress of something."

For example, you might hope to "further your career" by learning English.

In other words, you hope learning English will help you advance your career.

Again, there is no physical, measurable distance.

Our second set of commonly confused words is lose and loose.

These are words that even native English speakers confuse.

Lose [L-O-S-E] is a verb.

Lose has several meanings.

It can mean "to be unable to find."

You might tell a forgetful friend, "Don't lose your keys again!"

Lose can also mean "to fail to win something."

For example, "People expected the team to lose the football game."

It can also mean "to have less and less of something over time."

If someone is looking smaller than before, you might ask, "Did you lose weight?"

The word loose, [L-O-O-S-E] is usually used as an adjective.

Notice that loose ends with a strong "s" sound, while lose, the verb, ends with a "z"

sound.

Loose has no relation to lose.

Loose means "not tight, secure, or attached."

For example, you can have a "loose tooth", "loose clothing," or "loose pieces of

paper."

Loose can also mean "not exact."

For example, if you try to very quickly translate something from your native language to English,

you might be writing a "loose translation."

Another set of commonly confused words is accept and except.

Although they are spelled differently, many American English speakers pronounce these

words in almost the same way.

But, these two words are not interchangeable.

Accept [A-C-C-E-P-T] is a verb.

To accept means to receive or take something that is offered.

For example, if a company offers you a new job, you will probably accept their offer.

Except [E-X-C-E-P-T] can be used as a preposition, conjunction or a verb.

In general, it means "not including."

For example, the post office is open every day except Sunday.

Here's an example of accept and except in the same sentence.

"This machine accepts all coins except pennies."

As a verb, except [E-X-C-E-P-T] means "left out."

It is used in formal speech.

You might say "Women were excepted from the study."

As verbs, accept and except have almost opposite meanings, making these two words all the more

confusing.

And that's Everyday Grammar for this week.

Join us again next week as we take a look at more examples of commonly confused words.

I'm Adam Brock.

And I'm Ashley Thompson.
