Bark up the wrong tree - Duration: 6:31.Hey everybody, my name is Andrew from the Culips English Podcast.
In this video, I wanna take a look at the idiom "to bark up the wrong tree."
Do you know what this means?
To bark up the wrong tree?
I watched a Youtube video this week where this idiom was used and I thought it was a
great example of a real life context of using an idiom that I could show you guys.
So, I wanna show you the clip of the video where we hear "to bark up the wrong tree"
and then I'm gonna break it down and explain how this idiom is used.
Just a little bit of context before I show you the clip.
In this video, two men are accusing a woman of being a "fake homeless person" ok?
So, I believe this video takes place in Richmond, Virginia in the United States and a woman is begging for change
on the side of the road.
Two men see her and stop her and get really angry at her actually, because they say that
she's not homeless and that she is cheating people out of their money.
So, this whole video is just kind of pathetic and sad, but there was a nice use of this
idiom "to bark up the wrong tree," in the video clip, so this is why I'm showing it to you.
So, let's watch just the little exchange where we hear to bark up the wrong tree and then
I'll break it down for you and explain what it means.
So, let's watch that clip two times.
Let's watch it right now.
Man: Oh that's her car right there.
Woman: Y'all are barking up the wrong tree, I'm tellin' you right now.
Man: I bark wherever I wanna bark.
Woman: No you don't bark around me.
You got it?
Man: Oh that's her car right there.
Woman: Y'all are barking up the wrong tree, I'm tellin' you right now.
Man: I bark wherever I wanna bark.
Woman: No you don't bark around me.
You got it?
So, in that video, the woman told the two men that are accusing her of being a fake
homeless person "y'all are barking up the wrong tree, I'm tellin' you right now."
Y'all are barking up the wrong tree.
So here, "y'all" is kind of American slang for "you all."
So everybody, you two guys, you are both barking up the wrong tree, I'm telling you right now.
And in, actually, a very funny reply to this, the man says "I'll bark wherever I wanna bark!"
To me this was a line almost right out of a comedy movie, I thought this was really funny.
I'll bark wherever I wanna bark.
And then again, in an almost equally funny response, the woman says, "no you don't bark around me." Ok?
"You don't bark around me."
So, what does this mean.
Ok?
We hear the word bark, bark, bark, a lot.
And as you may know, this is the sound a dog makes, right?
Bark.
Bark.
A dog barks.
And this idiom "to bark up the wrong tree" actually is an allusion to the time when we used dogs to hunt.
Actually, I guess some people still use dogs to hunt.
But if someone is barking up the wrong tree, it's similar to a dog sitting at the bottom
of a tree barking, thinking that an animal, maybe a fox or a bird is in that tree that
he wants to hunt.
But really, the animal is in a different tree.
So if you're barking up the wrong tree, you're sitting like that dog at the bottom of that
tree expecting to get some prey, to make a kill, but you know that animal's in a different tree.
It's gone.
So here, when the woman says "y'all are barking up the wrong tree," what does it mean?
Well it means that the two men are wasting their time.
And we use this idiom a lot when we are being falsely accused of something, ok?
So maybe somebody's accusing me of lying.
Or stealing.
That's a better example.
Somebody accuses me of stealing ok?
But I'm innocent.
I can say "hey you're barking up the wrong tree."
You're wasting your time.
I'm innocent.
And this is what we hear the woman say, ok?
You're barking up the wrong tree, you're wasting your time accusing me of being fake homeless
but I'm, you know, I'm innocent.
You've got it all wrong, ok?
But the man's reply, "I'll bark where I wanna bark" ok?
"I'll bark wherever I wanna bark."
This is really funny.
And what does it mean exactly?
Well, it's kind of really just depending on the context.
We couldn't say this sentence in a different context and have it make sense, but, what
it means is don't tell me I'm wasting my time I can do whatever I want to.
I can accuse you if I want to accuse you and there's nothing you can do.
This kind of meaning, ok?
And then the woman, says to the man, "no you're not going to bark around me."
Ok?
And in this context, again, "bark" means you're not going to do that.
You're not going to falsely accuse me, ok?
So it's all, this whole exchange, is centred around this idea of falsely accusing an innocent
person.
So anyways, I saw this video this week and I thought it was an interesting use of this
idiom "to bark up the wrong tree."
And I thought the exchange between the man and the woman, even though they are very serious,
and they're arguing with each other, was an interesting and actually funny way to use
this idiom, so I wanted to show you guys.
I hope you enjoyed watching this video.
I would love it if you tried to make an example sentence of your own using "to bark up the
wrong tree" in the context of making a false accusation, ok?
Leave a comment, write an example sentence, I will double check it for you.
And yeah.
That's it for today's video.
Thank you very much for watching and I will talk to you next time.
Bye!
