Why are so many video game characters HOT??? - The Halo Effect & Attractiveness - Game Design Theory - Duration: 6:49.

Why is it that so many characters and video games are, well, hot? This could be

the result of a psychological principle called the halo effect, where we think

attractive things are better than they actually are. Let's investigate this

further. Hi, my name is Gigity McD, here on the channel we talk about the ins and

outs of game design so that you are equipped to analyze, discuss and create...

great games. Simply put the halo effect is when we find something or someone

attractive and attribute qualities to that thing purely because we find it

attractive. It happens to us subconsciously so we can't control it.

The halo effect has been researched and observed in many different variations

including attractiveness, personality, education and branding. In all these

instances when someone was presented with a positive version of something

such as an attractive person, a good student or a known brand, it is common

for the perception of that thing to be more favorable than another standard or

possibly better alternative. This carries on to mean if a person is seen to be

more attractive, we may think a range of their other traits are better too. This

is a passage from Kathrine Isbister's book, Better Game Characters by Design.

"Studies have shown that many qualities are attributed to people with attractive

features. These qualities include being seen as warmer, kinder, stronger, more

sensitive, more outgoing, more socially persuasive and dominant and even smarter

than others." *end quote* And this behavior is something that we can tap into to

improve a character's first impression. Attractive people are psychologically

easier to like than unattractive people. By making the main character of our game

attractive, we can potentially adjust the opinion the player has of them initially.

Thinking about this in a more marketing sense, the main character is often seen

on the marketing materials like posters, in trailers and sometimes on the box art.

Hell... Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII was used as a model to sell designer

clothing and accessories for Louis Vuitton, and

the characters from Final Fantasy XIII have been used by different companies

also. The player will be spending a lot of time with this character so it's a

good idea to take all the opportunities possible to make the player like the

main character. So if the halo effect is applied in this situation, making the

main character attractive will prime the player to formulate a good first

impression, thus liking the player more and setting

off the game with a positive vibe. Let's also remember that the first time you

see the main character might be on a poster or a trailer months before you

buy the game. We've talked a bunch about the good, now let's talk about the bad.

There is research showing that not only do we apply the halo effect to people

who are attractive. Thinking of them more highly in other traits as a result but

there is an opposite effect we apply to someone that our initial impression of

is negative. The reverse halo effect or otherwise known as the horns effect is

the occurrence of giving negative traits to a person that are not warranted based

on a bad impression of them in the past. So for example an unattractive person

may be assumed to be less empathetic, less intelligent or less caring just

because they don't conform to what is considered attractive. This is a bad

thing for society but it is something we can utilize to take advantage of in our

game characters. In opposition to being attractive, an ugly character can be seen

as more difficult to like, or as it is more fun to think of, easier to hate. This

makes unattractive characters good candidates for antagonists in your game.

We can utilize the horns effect to craft the player's opinion of the character.

Unattractive characters should be used sparingly however as the less your

player feels negatively towards your game, the better. It might be possible to

overuse the horns effect and come off worse. How exactly do we make characters

attractive. This is a fair question given what we just discussed but there isn't a

one-size-fits-all correct answer. Health, the quality for a person to be

healthy and symmetry of features, where features on one side of the body match

features on the other side of the body are consistent benefits for

attractiveness across all cultures but it ends there as a solid answer. Maybe you

could lean on stereotypes a bit big, muscles and romantic for men and curvy

in all the right places for women and maybe that suits your needs just fine.

There isn't anything necessarily wrong with that, just don't expect to be taken

very seriously if you are using the most common tropes in society like those ones.

And also be conscious to not reinforce harmful stereotypes. But attractiveness

is different for every person and manifests itself in different ways

throughout different cultures or even subcultures. Do you find tattoos

attractive? How about facial piercings? Are you a long hair person or a short

hair person? To get this right you need to research the cultures and subcultures

in your game. Investigate what you are portraying in your game and who might be

involved. Do you research into the common and uncommon stereotypes of the theme

then think about whether that will gel with your target audience. Can you alter

something without changing the fundamental meaning of what you're

trying to get across? Will that insult someone? Also be aware that along with

conventional attractiveness, shows of affection vary from culture to culture

too. It isn't okay to kiss your partner in public in every country in the world.

While cultures are slowly changing over time and so are their displays of

affection, if your game needs to leverage affection as part of the use of

attractiveness it may also be appropriate for another trip to the

books if you really want to nail the realism or if you want to reflect a

certain time period. Why don't you guys tell me what your favorite attractive or

unattractive character is? Drop that character in the comment section. Or do

you have an example of the horns or halo effect in action in a game? If you stop

and reflect knowing what you know now, you'll probably be surprised at how

liberally the halo effect is applied. If you wanted to, drop this video a like. It

you're new here I'm Steven sure welcome to the vlog today is gonna be an awesome

day we're gonna make a starburst candy nerf gun so let's check this out sure what's

this for the other day I got a bunch and I mean a bunch of supplies check this

out I got this awesome rocket thing that I got some more rocket and most

importantly I got some molding clay check this out

oh yeah we're definitely gonna need this more than clay for today because we're

about to mold a nerf gun and then make a starburst candy nerf gun I'll go down we'll

share it sit back relax enjoy this vlog because

I'm gonna teach you how to make a starburst nerf gun and it's gonna be

edible and you can totally eat (edible) it it's gonna be so incredible let's get to work

step one we got the mold stuff so we're gonna need some starbursts so let's go

over to the fan mail section shares believe it or not a lot of you sent a

bunch of candy like check this out we got like cupcakes in the fan mail

we've got gummies we got more gummies we got a big box of candy and somewhere in

here we have a big box of a bunch of starboard oh yeah sure is this is what

I'm talking about you are epic let's take this big box of starbursts put it

over with the mold stuff now we just do one more thing and that is to get have a

nerf gun and believe it or not yours you also said nerf guns in the fan mail so

let's pick out an awesome nerf gun let's see we have this knife gun that we

modded to do the silly string nerf gun mod this isn't a nerf coming this is

something so epic it's a Flying Pig how cool is that we got some cool nerf guns

in here you know what shares I'm thinking today we use AHA this the

classic nerf triad and now we got all the

supplies we need for the starburst nerf gun let's hope we

have enough mold stuff shares because if this comes out this is going to be the

most crazy edible nerf gun ever so let's get back upstairs to the kitchen we got

a lot of cooking to do let's go let's go let's go let's go this that child last

night I put a fidget spinner in here and made the mold then I popped the fidget

spinner out and then it leaves like a fidget spinner behind and you can pour

stuff into it you can make cool molds out of it I also did it with the nerf

guns it came out like this the coolest thing is it still keeps all the detail

like check this out you can see where the trigger goes you can see that where

the Nerf darts go and everything it's the coolest mold ever so the goal today

is to get this new mold style new nerf gun make a mold pour the starburst in

hopefully it'll Harden and hopefully we'll be able to eat it so let's get to

work let's get this mold stuff out all this is the coolest stuff ever it's

purple and white yes and makes it two ingredients together in order for the

mold to work I'm just gonna take one set we're gonna open up another set because

we got to make this big enough for the nerf gun to get molded out of so check

this out shares oh yeah let's have fun stuff these get so you just pop this

stuff open I think it's gonna break it open and get to work and mix

oh yeah the mold is made it's completely mixed when they have a couple minutes to

work with it before it hardens out so get this nerf gun let's press it in

all right shares here goes nothing nerf gun versus the mold here we go in three

two one and press in oh I hope this is gonna work let's see I think that looks

pretty good yep now we'll just leave it in here

we'll wait for it to dry and hopefully it'll come out as a good mold and the

best part is yours while we're waiting for this mold to harden we can rinse

this out and test it with some starburst look over here wash it and

once we get all the old starburst out here we'll put some new starbursts in

molds all complete check this out shares you can see that like the finest detail

this is how awesome the molds gonna turn out if the starbursts actually work so

now let's go get some starbursts and let's fill this up the reason the mold

didn't work last night is because that makes the starburst with water and it

made it too runny so I'm going to do a hundred percent starburst this time and

I think it'll work perfect to melt the starburst the first step is you're

gonna need some type of cup I'm use a paper cup I'm gonna use some cooking oil

spray spray it in the cup that way the starbursts don't stick then I'm just

going to take a paper towel and move it all around the cup so it's completely

oily to put these slimy on the inside and then it's time cake um starburst

arbors minis that are already on the graph this to be perfect let's take some

of these let's dump them in the cup oh yeah I think we'll do just about that

much and let's stick in the microwave let's turn it on let's melt some

starbursts and let the starbursts candy melt oh yeah there they go oh no I put it in

too long disturbers all melted out make sure this might be bad uh-oh it's gonna

be too hot to touch okay let me grab some like hot stuff let's see how am I

gonna get this out we have melted burning hot starbursts in the microwave

yikes oh oh it worked though it definitely melted the starburst candy look at

that it's boiling hot starburst candy now let's take the boiling hot cup of

starburst and let's pour into the mold here we go ready in three two one go

oh wow look at this so weird-looking Oh

oh my gosh will this work shares I have no idea come right now hashtag start

worse do you think it's gonna work well there we go shares we got the melted

servers into the nerf gun mold now the question is when is hardens will it pull

out and look like a nerf grow on the other side I have no idea what do you

think shares come with hash tagging or if you think the nerf guns gonna come

out and look like a nerf gun or come on how to make starbursts if you think the

stars are gonna come out all one big glob and look completely messy

oh whoa check it out disturbers that were in the microwave already hardens

look at that in a perfect circle oh that looks so good that means the nerf guns

gonna come out like that oh-oh it's like oh look at that that's

starburst that's so crazy it's like slime styled

Star Wars whoo okay it's still hot though starburst or hardening cherries

check it out this mold is done let's see how this comes out okay will the nerf

gun pull out of here oh it is a tight squeeze oh come on please work oh oh yes

check that out look how good that looks yes okay let's stick some starburst in

here let's get melting this is gonna be perfect this time we're gonna use the

minis kind of start with the sweet and sour starburst they got some neon green

and some pink and then I think we're gonna do a different method to melt the

starbursts let's put it in the oven

Oh No okay well step to work now step three is unwrap the starbursts and stick

them in the mold okay we got all the strawberries in this mold let's get on a

baking sheet we're gonna put it in the oven this time I think this might be a

cooler method it might turn out better than this one I don't know if shares

I've never stuck a mold in the oven before but let's give it a try come on

let's go how long we gonna stick it down there oh whoa okay smoke everywhere okay

not sure what happened there it's still a little smoky of an oven but you know

what let's stick these starburst in let's see what happens I have no idea

but here they go good luck starburst good luck cinnamon

nerf gun mold what's gonna happen I don't know what's fine by the way shares

this is what happens to the cups ahead starburst in it whoa yeah that might be

what happens in there guy might just crumble I don't know idea mmm no good

though ooh and it's working chairs the oven is totally smoky but oh behind all

that smoke check it out this starbursts are actually melting and

it looks really really good it's almost done let me show you oh my

this out okay so this was test subject number one Star Wars nerf gun trying

number one we got the mold and we heated up starburst we put him in a cup we hit

him up in the microwave and we pour the hot Star Wars liquid into this mold and

then think it's about to like actually fall out now so let's take it out

Willa's come out will it not I have no idea chairs come right now what you

think okay here we go three two one let's see oh okay it's not it's not

squishy like a starburst it's like hard now I think cuz we heated up the

starburst throw em away oh but it's actually coming out in one piece oh my

goodness let's see what this stuff looks like oh my gosh

you ready for this oh I'll check this out oh it's a starburst nerfs gonna

actually has all the detail in it this is so cool it tastes like starburst

woman it's so good oh my god should actually warm okay before we get too far

The first tool we're going to talk about is actually a spec guide.

Now you might have it in book form, or you might look it up [on an] online service you might have.

But either way, you have to have this information.

One of the most important things your going to do in your brake inspection is measure the thickness of this rotor.

Now, you're saying 'well I don't even machine rotors at my shop.'

Well, the thing is, if this rotor is under discard, it's unsafe to drive.

That might make that customer a little more willing to replace the rotors when they realize that it's unsafe to drive.

The other thing you can look up in here are torque specs for thing like the caliper to bracket, bracket to knuckle...

Even the wheel lug nut torque specs are in here.

Another thing you might have to look up is brake bleeding sequences.

And it's not always guys, right rear.

It's not farthest from the master, not anymore with today's vehicles.

Sometimes you start at the right front wheel.

So it's very important to have this information.

Right now I'm going to answer the most fruequently asked question of what is the difference between

a baffle trim and an integrated trim when referring to can lights.

And the easiest answer is a white baffle trim is separate from your light bulb.

So if your light bulb burns out you simply remove it screw in a new light bulb, all set!

On an integrated trim the actual trim and the LED are one unit.

So if happens to go out you replace the whole unit.

Um, I would encourage you to swing by a couple of local stores, a lighting specialty store

or a big box store and you can see a display.
