what up YouTube back for another intro to hip hop we're
going to continue the multi-part series of how to get started in Logic Pro X
what we're gonna get into today is just some basic kind of where are some
virtual instruments inside of Logic Pro X how to pull those up how to get
started actually you know making some sound and recording some MIDI one thing
I do want to mention is you know I'm assuming and perhaps shouldn't have that
you've already hooked up your MIDI keyboard if for any reason you have any
issue with that sometimes there just plug and play sometimes they require a
little more internal maintenance to get them working right just drop a comment
I'd be happy to make a video on that I don't want to get started beyond you
know where anyone else is and I want to make sure everyone can move along with
us but that said let's jump into the computer you can see I've got some
virtual instruments pulled up here and I'll go through those here in just a
second but how I'm accessing those mmm first of all just you know creating a
track software instrument if I have an empty channel strip then I can come over
here to instrument and I have all of these to choose from here so alchemy is
a you know super-powerful synthesizer you throw my headphones on alchemy is a
great synthesizer something you're definitely don't want to get to know
there's the drum kit designer I mean obviously you can see here a whole mess
of different synthesizers what kind of different blends and tastes a vocoder
the exs24 sampler which is something we'll be doing a video on and that you
can use for kind of like machine style sample chopping and things like that the
retro synthesizer which I'll be showing you today the studio our sculpture the
studio horns and strings which i've touched on a little bit in my 10.4
review but I'll be showing you those again today ultra beat which we'll be
looking at today and you know quite a few others electric pianos organs we'll
look at some of those today so you know to pull up alchemy for instance you can
just click on alchemy pop it up in stereo and it's gonna drop in like that
I've already got one up here so let's get right into that by clicking on this
box over here you can pull up the instrument itself it's going to give you
three options browse simple which just eliminates browse and gives you the
basic functions of that given synth and then advanced which kind of opens up a
whole world of you know knobs and things that you'd be familiar with if if you
are familiar with synthesis if not you know I'd leave these alone for now but
there's definitely a lot of capability within alchemy to make the sound of your
own brows is really intuitive you can select a type so you know if we choose a
base and then something let's say classic always like classic and the
kerbin and let's go clean and now we've got a agile synth bass pulled up
so that's cool
yeah
so it's really easy to use one other cool thing about it is and if I'll just
go ahead and change it over to the simple but basically we're just looking
at the bottom down here is if I pull up a sound
pretty dramatic changes too
and then I can also
so you can really you know create like I said make it your own there same thing
if we just put it back on the sign over here
and then you also have your standard adsr controls attack decay sustain lease
for those who don't know attack is essentially how quick is that how quick
does the sound right away the decay is like how long does it stay on the
background sustain impacts the back end as well
and the release is going to determine how long it plays after you let go of
the keys
place for a while all right so alchemy is you know a place to definitely get to
know I mean it's you know it's a just by itself as equivalent to what some DAWs
offer in terms of sounds there's just an immense amount in here I have not even
come close to going through all of it
the next instrument we're going to take a look at this is the session horns
which was a new addition in the 10.4 upgrade we've gone over this a little
bit so right off the bat you have sections to choose from which are like
ensembles multiple instruments at one time and your single instruments so you
can pull up just a trumpet or sax let me take a look at some of these R&B
sections
so it gives you some controls that you can see here you know Auto vibrato
humanizes a good one where you can kind of add that effect that makes it sound
like person is playing so things will be a little in the pocket a you know little
fluctuation from note to note in terms of the velocity or the volume that
they're played at you can even add in key clicks attack and release the same
so if you want a slow attack or a long release on the end you can give it that
effect there's also different styles within each instrument subsection so I
can say I want to sustain
you're really funny Zach so you know quite a lot to play with in here you
know again switch it over to the soul section and you're just getting a
totally different sound
my kids just busted up in the room very similar layout very similar workflow you
know you've got ensembles in different sections let's go to a string ensemble
but definitely something worth using worth playing around with and you know
you may be tempted to go look at things like Native Instruments Komplete which
is amazing and I use it all the time but you know had I had these things
available to me with logic when I first started making beats it would have you
know certainly been less tempting because you got great horns and great
strings through these last two plugins alright so up next is the retro synth
well this is modeled after like classic synthesizers again if you're familiar
with synthesis a lot of this will look really fit familiar but you can control
the type of sound wave you know the sign the sawtooth the square you've got
another oscillator I believe down here and can blend between the two so let's
make
switch it over to another type of synthesizer
I guess we'll use that for bass one other cool thing is you've got a ton of
presets so Leeds pads bass strings keyboards brass you can see them all but
just a ton so again like going out and buying other aftermarket software that
makes you know that's modeled after synthesizers logics already done that
work for you here you have full control over these
parameters turn things on and off again there's all different styles at you know
FM synthesis synthesis is a different style of synthesis like old 87
yeah all right now we're on to the organ this is modeled after a vintage b3
hammond which is like Ray Charles and a million other artists played all the
time you can have full control
so got a bunch of presets down here so these are gonna put the knobs in
different places all right all right cool so last you know simple instrument
I want to show you that's a big help for me I also think this is a good learning
tool just as far as like hip-hop drum patterns and things but it's the ultra
beat drum sampler I don't know if it's called the ultra beat drum sampler but
ultra beat again you pull that out right down over here whoo drum synth I was
close
so this pulls up the ability to let me first this is what you're gonna see when
you load it up so it's a synthesizer one thing I'll show you right off the bat
like if you wanted to bring in some of your own drums and build and build your
own drum kits you can pull up you know a brand new empty drum Bank like I have
here so it just has no drums in it and then if we go to my hard drive
folders for beach let's just pull up drum pack so say we just want to load in
this clap so if we're on this first drum so we're clicked on it where this is
highlighted and I can drag this clap into this box and it is now in the air
sampled ready for me to use so I could load up kicks' I could even save those
drum packs like I have some that I've made here and then you know reuse them
obviously you can reverse a sound you can't really hear that but if you wanted
like a reverse crash or something like that for like build up or to help with a
drop that's a really easy way to do it and then you can change all kinds of
parameters on the drums this is not the most intuitive thing to look at it it's
like you know an angry robot or something however all the controls are
here so get familiar with it what I find myself doing a lot is loading up a drum
kit clicking on this full view button and then using the sequencer which is
what I'm going to show you now and to show you that I'm going to show you
again all of the stock sounds that you have within logic so I can come over
here to a drum kit and I can look at all these different drum kits alright and
these are just hip-hop but all of these are gonna have sounds that are relevant
like the 808 and 909 that are relevant to hip-hop and then also you can mix and
match so you might just take a you know a kick from one of these electronic drum
kits that fits your song and you might pull the snare from somewhere else and
so on so I'm gonna pull up this hip-hop kit if
you hold down the mouse and just kind of drag left you can erase all the junk
that's in there cuz it'll already have a pattern or a sequence loaded in we're
going to turn it on right here with this button so you can hear your your sounds
by clicking on them there I'm actually going to load up the hip-hop heavy kit
and so when you're working at this BPM which I've set it to 88 typically your
snare is going to land on the 5 and the 13 in a 16 semitone pattern so if we put
a snare here in here and then 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 21 and 29 so now if
we play this in here we got a snare in the correct place so we'll make a little
kick pattern and you know just explore that's why I say this is really
educational as you kind of see like what you can get away with which is anything
and that you don't have to fall into the same patterns all the time it's not like
rigid and confining like it might seem like because all you have is these boxes
pattern made to my actual drum track and as you can see there's nothing in here
if we come down to these almost unnoticeable little dots down here drag
to arrange window if you hold down you know click and hold down and bring it up
nothing happens just kidding then it will drag your drum pattern in so it's
ready to go I'm just gonna double that and then we can turn this off now
cuz it'll continue to play and I'll actually throw off your mix cuz you'll
hear these additional drums that won't be there when you bounce it and so don't
do that alright cool so one last thing I wanted to show you before we get out of
here was just how to load and aftermarket virtual instruments so
something that you did buy or you know maybe you got it as a part of a you know
a purchase with a MIDI keyboard we have additional instruments so once you have
it loaded in and everything you know has been saved correctly to your computer
and you know follow the manufacturer's instructions or whatever for that if you
come down here to your au instruments all of these are aftermarket instruments
so like if I wanted to load up Nexus I go to my riaf X Nexus stereo and again
you can do that from this location like I just did you can also do that from
this location after you load an empty channel strip or if you load the wrong
instrument or whatever you know I can come into Native Instruments and load up
contact or my mode art which has an upgrade I need to go download alright so
then if we have Nexus and
that's pretty good alright well I hope this helps you with kind of just step
two after we've already gone over what some of these basic features are and
what the windows are and all that now you know how to load up an instrument
and get started you know how to do drums and any other instruments that you want
you've got access to all these others that we didn't go over yet so jump in
