Waching daily Nov 1 2018

Here's what happened earlier today.

I went online to read about this article,

about how rising interest rates might affect the US bond

market.

I'm kidding, I was watching baby goat videos.

[LAUGHING]

But it got me thinking about the internet

and how much it has changed our lives.

Because before the internet, you would do a challenge

and you would maybe try to make your friends do it.

But now, if you post it online, millions of people

might do something that you decide

is a challenge, no matter how weird it is.

That's why so many people dance alongside their cars

doing the KiKi challenge.

Remember this?

Which, some people it worked out for, some people it didn't.

She was pretty good at it, but she's right next to traffic,

I don't know about that.

[LAUGHTER]

Sometimes I get involved.

A couple of years ago, that mannequin challenge was big.

That's me and Warren Beatty right there doing it.

And you had to hold perfectly still, so that was fun.

The latest viral challenge is-- have you

seen this flaunt your wealth challenge?

Has anyone seen this?

It's ridiculous.

It's people-- they pretend to fall out

of their luxury vehicles and spilling valuables everywhere.

There's another one that someone posted.

[LAUGHTER]

I don't really equate makeup and balloons with wealth,

but to each his own.

That's what she spilled out of that car.

Anyway, I just don't even know how that starts.

I think someone just fell and went,

let's make sure it's a challenge.

I'm not drunk.

But I searched online for others because I

don't want to be left out.

I don't want you to be left out, I want to participate in them.

So recently there's the fluff challenge.

This was really funny.

You'd hide behind a sheet and drop the sheet,

and suddenly disappear.

And people were doing it to their dogs.

This dog was very confused.

What happened.

[LAUGHTER]

And then she comes out, obviously the dog goes around

and he's like, oh.

[AWWS FROM CROWD]

You got me, I thought you were gone.

[LAUGHTER]

Oh, it's so fun.

I do that to Portia, and she's always so confused.

[LAUGHING]

And then there are a lot of challenges

that I've never heard of.

There's this new thing called the silly salmon

challenge which is ridiculous.

It has over 17 million views.

This is what they do.

Silly salmon.

Where?

There, bruh.

Woo.

[SPLASH]

[LAUGHING]

Do the silly salmon.

Where?

Over there, bro.

Are you-- oh my god.

[WHOOPING]

[LAUGHTER]

Silly salmon or what?

Where?

[WHOOPING]

[LAUGHTER]

[SCREAMS]

[LAUGHTER]

That's a--

[APPLAUSE]

Did I mention it has over 17 million views?

So I thought, it's easy to start your own challenge.

So I'm going to start my own challenge,

because I've noticed a lot of people

have a hard time doing the dab.

Our warm up guy, Tom, could not do it.

And then Troy, our writer, could not do it.

This man in the audience could not do it.

[LAUGHING]

And they all have one thing in common, besides being white.

They're all dads.

So, I'm starting the "get your dad to dab challenge."

So you can get your dad or someone else's dad

to dab when they least expect it.

You all of a sudden spring it on him, dab, and then it's funny.

So, you post it on EllenTube with the #DadDabChallenge.

How To Deep Condition Natural Hair To Retain Length 😍 My Simple Natural Hair Care Routine! - Duration: 3:09.

So in this video, we show you how to deep condition your hair. I already applied deep

conditioner to the three sections of my hair. It's better to apply deep conditioner into

sections so that you're able to work the product in easy, this is the last section and it already

looks like it has the conditioner in it but that's because I applied the excess

conditioner from these twists into this section so it's not gonna need as much

the conditioner as the rest. Let's just spray some water and then work it in.

work in the water with the praying hands method.

so the water touches each and every one of your strands and then you're gonna

take your favorite deep conditioner, remember that other three sections

already deep conditioner, and any excess I have here so this section doesn't

need as much, apply as much as your needs and just work it in usually

you know if your hair has enough deep conditioner if you can finger dentangle

with a breeze. So just keep on working it in using the praying hands method,

make sure to put extra on your ends because they're the oldest part of your hair and need more moisture.

I'm just gonna work that in

and then twist up the section

The next step is applying my deep conditioning cap. If you see any extra

conditioner you can apply it to the other parts of your hair. So the next step is apply

my deep conditioning cap. Here it is but first because I don't want the

conditioner to get on this material. So I have to wear a shower cap and then

the shower cap acts like an extra layer that can create heat to penetrate my hair.

So I apply the shower cap. A cheetah one.

Make sure that everything is covered and then this will be warmed up in the

microwave for one to two minutes on each side. Depending on your preference.

I let it stay for five minutes or 30 minutes or however long I desire but to

but please follow product instructions. Thanks for watching this video on how to deep condition your hair. I hope it helps.

How to Switch Jobs in 6 Months or Less - Duration: 6:17.

Hey there!

Welcome to Work in Progress, a how-to series that's meant to help you with everything from

prepping for a job interview to boosting your confidence or negotiating a raise.

Here's today's question:

Have you been thinking about finding a new job?

Maybe you've stopped yourself from thinking about that because finding a new job brings

on anxiety and frustration that the whole process is going to take too long.

And that pivoting and moving to a new career is just way too hard.

Well, today, I have some really good news for you.

We can actually help you make your job search way more simple and maybe even enjoyable.

We've got four steps that you can follow to find the right company and job that you'll

be super excited about.

Start by assessing your current job and your skills.

Take a look at your current job, and think about the tasks that you really enjoy doing,

versus the tasks that you procrastinate on and you just aren't really energized by.

Let's pretend that you are a marketing strategist, and one of the things you love talking about

or thinking about is social media, the graphics, the captions.

But one of the things you hate doing as a marketing strategist is writing press releases,

or talking to the press.

Those are some areas where you would have your list of things your procrastinate on,

versus things you really enjoy, and you work on right away.

After figuring out what you like doing, take a moment to consider your skills.

What are you good at doing?

What are your strengths that you've been commended for?

What do your coworkers look to you for advice on?

If you're feeling stumped, try asking your close friends or family what they think your

strengths are.

They often give great insight into what's hard to see about ourselves.

Think about the combination of what you like doing, or you're energized by, and what you're

successful at.

You want to find a job that really intersects those two things.

So something you're energized by/like, and something you're successful with.

That's probably what your next job should be.

Take a class.

You can also probably identify some skills gaps.

And if you do find those, the next thing is to maybe find a class whether it's something

you pay for, a free class on a website like Udemy or even a webinar—and Career Contessa

has tons of webinars.

So if you have a skills gap, you need to figure out how to fill that gap.

And a great place to start is by taking courses or a class.

Anything from paid to free will do.

If you're looking to stay in a similar role or industry, and therefore you don't have

any "skills gaps" that you need to fill, the next thing you can work on is really working

on what we call people skills.

So what about your problem solving or productivity or how you run meetings efficiently?

Those are all skills that are relevant no matter what job you go to next.

Send some cold emails and ask for informational interviews.

We're huge fans of informational interviews here at Career Contessa.

Why?

Because it's a great way to try before you buy.

You can talk to people who already work for that company that you're interested in, or

in that role that you think you want to transition into, without actually having to be working

for that company or in that role yet.

And you can ask them, "How did you get this job?"

"What's your career trajectory?"

"What type of skills do you use to be successful here?"

And if they seem to align with what you want long-term, then you know that pursuing this

is totally worth it.

The process for booking an informational interview is pretty simple.

First, you're going to identify a person who you want to connect with.

This is usually going to be someone who either works for the company you're interested in,

or they have the job that you're interested in, and if you're lucky, maybe you find someone

who hits both of those.

Once you identify that person, you're going to send a concise note to them to see if they

can meet with you for twenty to thirty minutes to talk about their career, why you're interested

in it, and answer any questions that you might have.

And just so you know, for a lot of people, they feel all this pressure to meet in person

with somebody.

But it's going to be a lot easier if you give them the option to connect with you via phone

or in person.

So don't be worried.

You get just as much value out of talking to them over the phone, as you do in-person

to learn about their career.

If you want more detail on what this reach out should look like, check out our free networking

templates, as well as our article on how to send a cold email.

Those links are in the description.

Move within your company or industry.

If you really love your current company, but you're just not feeling excited about your

department or your role anymore, now is a great time to go talk to someone in HR, or

even your manager, to say "Hey, I might be interested in moving to another department

or another role, what kind of steps should I take to get there next?"

If you're really excited about the work that you're doing, but not necessarily your company,

it might be a great idea to think about other open positions in your same industry.

So for example, let's say you work in the entertainment industry and you work for a

small tv studio or production company.

And while you really love the work that you're doing, you're kind of done with that company.

Well, you can really leverage the industry insight and experience you have to move onto

maybe a bigger production company or a bigger studio.

And that's a great way to find a new job, is by leveraging your industry skill set and

experience.

Reach out to your current network.

Old coworkers, acquaintances, partners you've worked with, and let them know that you're

beginning a job search.

Utilizing your connections is a great way to get the ball rolling and find positions

within your industry.

At Career Contessa, our ultimate goal is to help you find a career that you feel successful

and fulfilled in.

When you know that it's time to maybe search for that new job or transition, we hope that

these tips will be really helpful.

It will also help you broaden what you think about as a job search.

You don't always have to move to a completely different industry or a completely different

company.

Sometimes, it's just moving roles within your current company.

Whatever works best for you, follow that and stick with it.

If you're ready to start reaching out to cold contacts, or to your network, use our free

downloadable networking templates which can help you draft those emails.

They're linked in the description.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson Exposes Great Grandfathers Secret Family! | Who Do You Think You Are - Duration: 8:34.

So today I am hoping to find some clarity to the situation I'm not gonna

call it everything else right now with my great-grandfather Jesse upper

cue I'm meeting with criminal justice

historian David Walcott who's asked an archivist to pull some documents about

the murder I really want to know if my great-grandfather actually committed

this crime and if so what his motive might have been I found this article I

actually can't tell him what actually happened I mean he tells a story if

someone were treating from the room why did it choose to arrest him it seems

like the police are not believing your great-grandfather's story about a man

being in a room and running out instead it seems like Jesse uppercu had the

means and the opportunity to have killed her and he was the one there so they're

focusing on him and the investigation and chosen to arrest him okay let's take

a look at some newspapers and try to figure out what exactly happened right

ultimart on July 4 December 1872 okay so it's a real newspaper once is the

old-fashioned way so your article is my August 28th let's look for August 29th

or 30th to 31st 29 Friday morning August 30th

Saturday morning August 31st oh okay okay okay I found something the

Lombard Street homicide further particulars in the case the will of the

murdered lady this will which is the second one

executed by the deceased was found at the house where the murder was committed

so that means that this is her second will so she has rewritten her will right

why would you rewrite your will we might be able to learn more from the rest of

the article about that it is learned that both the Wills mentioned were

executed on the one day July 26th 1872 under the following circumstances a

month before this murder yes seems that way on the day named the

young man my great-grandfather summoned mr. Bannon to the old lady's house where

she desired to be left alone with lawyer this this person Bannon he's the lawyer

for the aunt who was killed okay a will was drawn some donations were made to a

Methodist Protestant Church and to different persons in small amounts and

the balance to young upper Q then amounting to about twenty-two thousand

dollars with inflation it's a little over four hundred thousand that's a lot

of money that's a lot of money back then the young upper queue insisted upon a

reading of the will and indicated dissatisfaction with the church donation

he induced the ants to have another drawn and which these donations were

abandoned there was a will drawn up and literally right after that what was

drawn up a second what was made right he's not happy with the first will so

while the lawyer is still there he insists that the lawyer draw up a second

will getting rid of the donations and giving everything to him that's crazy I

was actually wondering you know about a mode of possible motive for this murder

and now you know I'm getting information about money and a lot of money I'm

wondering if in you know and in court documents if it does get to the bottom

of of this let's look at the records from the Baltimore courts okay

September charm 1872 oh my gosh so at the front there's an index I think upper

queue page supposed to page 74 there it is

this is the state of Maryland versus Jesse W upper keel October 4th 1872 what

would this be plea non Culp not culpable in Latin or not guilty and what's all

this so this is all the witnesses that come there's so many people so the left

side here is the prosecution alleges and then the right side is the defense

witness oh wow and it's about an equal amount of people

right it's largely a circumstantial case he's arrested because he has the means

the opportunity and apparently a motive right but his character becomes one of

the deciding factors December 16th so after a two-week trial his jury not

being able to agree in discharge his discharge discharged

which means that they decided they couldn't decide the case right it means

what we have what's called a hung jury that they just couldn't reach a

conclusion Wow down here though this is a reference to a second case number 57

gin term 1873 great I mean not great but okay what does that mean for a

prosecution and that in that sense for the fact that they bothered to have a

second trial suggests that at least in the eyes of the prosecutors they had a

real case and it really could get a guilty verdict okay

the archivists have brought over the court records from the next year up just

one you here we are page nine

okay there's a second trial then March 6 1873 verdict not guilty it's found not

guilty and once he's found not guilty it's done the prosecutors can't bring it

back so they closed the case it was done it's in his past now right Wow

okay do we know if he got the inheritance there's no documentation

that I've been able to find okay I'm kind of still and a place of unease with

how I feel about my great-grandfather right now I do feel like if I was

sitting on that jury I would have a hard time really calling him innocent

mm-hmm well I'm wondering what happened to us after he walks away a free man we

need to find the next place he shows up in the historical records which might be

the next census in 1888 a way to find that is to try to look for it on

ancestry.com great so now I'm searching for Jessie our cue we want the 1880

census here we have age 30 he's married spouses

name L I uh perk you that's not my great-grandmother there's obviously a

family before my great-grandmother so if he was if he walked away a free man at

age of 23 he met and married her right away I have a six-year-old right

daughter and it looks like there's two more kids or two these are people I've

never heard of this was a whole life he had before he met my great-grandma

inhabitants of Evanston and the county of Cook state of Illinois I don't know

what happened with this family I don't know where I think the next destination

is gonna be Evanston Illinois to find out what happened there yeah yeah I

figured going to that article about the days after my great-grandfather's arrest

was terrifying I mean you know you're afraid to read the next paragraph but

you want to get to it so books so quickly and and just absorb as much

information as you can I have mixed emotions about my

great-grandfather right now it's hard when you receive this type of

information to not step back and start judging all of a sudden there's this

other family I didn't know anything about it all seems very very gray and

I'm looking for some clarity in that portion of his life

Being Healthy Is Being Adaptable - Duration: 1:47.

Hey guys! I appreciate you tuning in for this episode of the mental minute. Today, I'm

going to be talking about part two of Jared's top ten nutritional guidelines

that you could use on a daily basis. We looked at parts 1 through 5, now we're

going to talk about 6 through 10. So number 6: maintain a healthy balance of

various ingredients. Don't be so set in your ways that you don't try new things

just because you heard about it or read about it. Number 7: don't eat terms.

Low-fat, low-sugar, & sugar-free don't necessarily mean healthier options and

in many instances they aren't. Number 8: adopt nutritional guidelines and

principles that you could use in any situation. If you decide that you want to

eat more vegetables at every single meal when you go out to eat, look at the

vegetarian or vegan options first and go backwards from there. Number 9: view

mealtimes as a means to share experiences and knowledge with each

other. I love this one & hope you guys do too. Number 10: consider the environment

when making healthy choices long term and short term.

If you eat out of a car, understand that you probably aren't going to be healthy.

Make it a pact to sit down and enjoy your meals; look and appreciate what you have to it.

Hey guys! Did you enjoy the video? Hopefully, you learned something in the

past 60 seconds that you can take with you on your daily treks through life,

but here's the thing, it's the end of the video. So you're either glutton for

punishment or you want to see some sort of mistakes.

Speaking of mistakes, I guess this is a good time to say if you didn't like the

video, comment below and let me know if something that maybe you didn't

like, and tell me how I can improve. If you did though, hit the like button or

comment or share now. This next screen is going to give you all the social media

stuff, as well as a couple of other recommendations on videos that I put up.
