Waching daily Dec 1 2018

SO SHE WAS AN ORPHAN. I HADN'T EVEN THOUGHT OF THAT.

BECAUSE TO BE HONEST, I JUST REMEMBER THINKING, LIKE,

"WHAT PARENT WOULD ALLOW THEIR 15-YEAR-OLD CHILD

TO GET ON A SHIP TO A NEW FRONTIER

WHERE THEY WOULD KNOW NO ONE?"

BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE HER LIFE WAS SO PERILOUS

IN IRELAND THAT THIS WAS BY FAR A BATTER OPTION

THAT STAYING HOME.

THAT'S RIGHT. WOW.

MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW.

SO YOU CAN IMAGINE ELLEN ARRIVES ON THE LADY PEEL.

THE YOUNG GIRLS GET OFF THE BOAT,

AND MY GOODNESS, HOW AMAZING WOULD THAT HAVE FELT

AFTER BEING AT SEA FOR THREE TO FOUR MONTHS.

AND HERE, THEY WOULD HAVE BEGUN THEIR JOURNEY

IN THIS NEW LAND.

IT'S REALLY INCREDIBLE TO THINK THAT

SHE WOULD HAVE WALKED THESE SAME STEPS,

WOULD HAVE WALKED RIGHT IN HERE, JUST WHERE WE ARE.

WOW.

SO THEN, WHY WOULD SHE HAVE BEEN KEPT IN THE IMMIGRATION DEPOT

FOR THREE MONTHS?

THEY WERE WAITING TO FIND EMPLOYMENT,

SECURE EMPLOYMENT THAT WOULD THEM TAKE THEM

OUT OF THIS BUILDING AND INTO THE WORLD BEYOND.

GOT IT.

INSIDE, WE CAN GO TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE

FOR ELLEN IN THOSE EARLY DAYS OF THE COLONY.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT. YEAH, LET'S DO IT.

♪♪

COME ON THROUGH.

ISN'T THIS EXTRAORDINARY?

WOW.

SO, THIS IS THE KIND OF ROOM THAT ELLEN WOULD HAVE

SLEPT IN HERE IN THE DEPOT FOR THE FIRST THREE MONTHS

WHEN SHE ARRIVED HERE IN AUSTRALIA?

THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT.

YOU KNOW, NOT LUXURIOUS.

SURE, BUT I'M SURE ANYTHING WAS BETTER THAN

BEING ON A SHIP FOR FOUR MONTHS.

THEY HAVE STABLE BEDS THERE.

SURE.

SO, WHILE THEY WERE HERE, ON A DAILY BASIS,

THEY WOULD UNDERTAKE ROUTINE DOMESTIC CHORES.

THEY'RE NOT PRISONERS, BUT THEY'RE CERTAINLY

EXPECTED TO FOLLOW A PARTICULAR PATH.

I CAN IMAGINE THERE'S A LOT OF FEAR, I GUESS. YEAH.

OR HOPE AND EXCITEMENT. SURE.

AS THEY WERE THINKING ABOUT WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN,

YOU KNOW, THE KIND OF PEOPLE THEY MIGHT BE WORKING FOR.

SO THESE WOMEN, THOUGH, WERE COMING TO WORK

FOR THESE MEN, AND DID THEY HAVE FAMILIES,

OR WERE THEY SINGLE?

THEY ALMOST WERE ALWAYS MARRIED WITH CHILDREN.

GOT IT. YEAH, SO THERE WAS

A SENSE IN WHICH YOU DIDN'T PUT YOUNG GIRLS

IN THE CARE OF MEN WHO MIGHT EXPLOIT THEM.

GOT IT.

AND WE'RE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY LUCKY

BECAUSE ARCHAEOLOGISTS AND RESEARCHERS

DISCOVERED ALL OF THESE INCREDIBLE OBJECTS

THAT HAVE SURVIVED FROM THE GIRLS' TIME HERE

IN THE 19th CENTURY.

WOW!

LET ME GIVE YOU SOME GLOVES. THERE YOU GO.

SURE. THANK YOU.

♪♪

INCREDIBLE.

AND IT SURVIVED. YES.

THAT'S INSANE. IT IS EXTRAORDINARY.

Brian Haberlin on Getting into Comics - Duration: 4:28.

Brian Haberlin on getting into comics Omar: Well, how did you get into comics?

What was your like first way into comics like as a fan?

Brian: Well, I found myself always as the kid that would draw, right?

In high school, I had friends that were already way into comics and I wasn't into comics

yet, okay.

But they cherry-picked the best of the best, so, the 15-year-old me, God, like, okay, they'll

bring out this like, okay, this is Jim Starlin, Adam Warlock, this is Jim Starlin, this is

the Thanos saga, you know, way back then, you know, kind of thing.

This was at the time John Byrne was doing his X-Men run with Chris Claremont and everything

that they gave me like; oh, here's a Gil Kane, here's John Buscema, here is, you know,

going even more esoteric, here is his Talbot's stuff, here's all this like more

advanced stuff and I still remember them saying, "what do you got next?".

And I was like, what's this one called?

Daredevil.

And I'm like, "Daredevil, what's that about?".

Well, he's a blind lawyer by day, fights crime at night, and I'm thinking, "really?".

Yeah.

"That's going to be good?", and it was Frank Miller's...

Omar: Yeah, of course.

Brian: So, I was just like; okay, don't give me more.

So, I was hooked, and then, I'll be going down San Diego with portfolio on hand and

stuff and I actually got a job offer from the then editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and John Ridley

senior to go and pencil at marvel when I was 18.

And at the time, it was like $35 a page, you get paid, you had to move to New York, and

so, I want to film school out here.

Omar: That's crazy.

You got offered a job right at 18 from showing pages or what was it?

What did you do?

Just show up there with, "here's some stuff"?

Brian: Yeah, it was the old San Diego convention center, as I recall, where it used to be,

San Diego Comic-Con, and you all stand in line with your stuff and there you go.

So, I thought I got to meet Terry Fitzgerald who was Todd's right hand man

back in the time, and the guy was working, "Oh Brian, he really wants to get to into

comics".

"Oh, give him a piece".

And he gave me this Spawn Jim Lee Angela Todd McFarlane, Angela piece that

Jim Lee and Todd did, he's like, "Here you go, go and color".

I colored it and rendered it and I put 3-D models in the background, replacing the drawing

they did with 3-D model versions of the thing and gave it tune, thinking, "Okay, this

is going to be great, they're going to like this, right?

And stuff, and Terry was like, "Todd wants to know if you can put back in his line

art".

Omar: That's funny.

Brian: And that really didn't amount to anything until you and I still go down to San Diego,

portfolio on hand and not get dick.

Then in 93, a friend of mine brought in a girl, said, "Hey, listen, I'm going to

get a booth and small press area in San Diego, I want you to join me." I said okay.

So, I went down there and I had a CR model for CRT, what do they kind of say those now,

those old, big?

It's actually deeper than it was wide, right?

And I had this big ink-jet print behind me of Green Lantern with a 3-D model power battery

behind him, all nine yards, and I had an animated Spawn on the monitor going down and everybody

and their mother came by and offered me work.

Omar: Oh, wow.

So, you just made a big show of yourself and you kind of just go like; it's actually

like a peacock just showing its feathers.

Brian: It worked out much better than going around with a portfolio in my hand.

Omar: That's the way it is.

Brian: And that's when Mark came back and Marc

Omar: Marc Sylvestri?

Brian: Yeah.

Omar: And he came by and offered you work, what did he offer you work as; as a writer,

an artist?

Brian: Well, so, that was my, that was always my problem.

So, I'd give whenever I had the stuff with me, penciled and color and everything.

And back then especially, okay, what do you want to do?

And Mark needed somebody to start in coloring department, so, I just

figured out; okay, that's the end, right?

Omar: So, you started off coloring?

Brian: Yeah.

Omar: That's cool.
