Waching daily Mar 13 2017

I thought, do we have to be nervous? But no it feels save.

It's not as busy as I expected which is nice.

No thank you. You made me really happy now.

Hey guys this is Cathy Cat. When you are in your country,

you get a certain media image portrait about Japan.

Today I am gonna go and ask foreigners who have come to Japan

if Japan lived up to their expectations.

Is it like they expected it to be?

Or is it different? Before and After! Let's ask foreigners in Japan.

Definitely up to our expectations. It's been amazing.

We got a lot to experience. Everything is so far has been perfect.

We are excited to look around.

Everything in a small space. Lots of people lots to look at.

Tokyo and Japan are very bright.

The US isn't as bright, I love it.

So many areas too like...

And each area is so extremely different.

And I don't think it has changed much in 15 years. We remember this street

coming here... and it's pretty much the same stores.

Same thing, it's fun.

It didn't change that much then? - No.

The people are really kind and respectful.

I wasn't surprised.

You weren't? You didn't even know you were coming.

It feels so safe. I feel safe here.

Coming to Tokyo... before we have ever been here...

I thought, do we have to be nervous? But no it feels save.

It's a very safe country.

And like you said, everyone is kind.

Everyone is very respectful and helpful.

For me, I am really into fashion.

I have always seen Japanese fashion to be very...

Extravagant, elaborate, colourful...

I wasn't disappointed when I came. I saw exactly what I saw in the media.

Everyone is free of expression. No one is laughing at anyone.

We were talking about that.

Everyone is open to dress however they want to.

That's something I like. In San Francisco it's the same way.

We are very free people so I love it here.

It was very colorful in the media which it is here sort of.

We are staying in a kind of outer place.

It's a lot different, it's a lot quieter.

Really quiet here.

It was really colorful and a lot of cute things like that.

But then in the same way...

I think it's not as busy as I expected which is nice.

Do you think the image you get back home about Japan

is it proper or was it too much?

I think it was fairly accurate.

It might be a bit overdone.

It's similar.

I thought, watching Anime at home...

and then actually coming to Japan it's really spot on.

The buildings look exactly like the animations and everything like that.

It's crazy.

I was told it's really clean here and it was really clean here.

There is a lot of people and a lot of hussle and bussle.

It lived up to what I heard, in America.

Back then (last time they came) we were not allowed to go to Disneyland

We went to Asakusa where it's more traditional and we got to experience

that different culture.

Compared to the Australian culture.

We had a good time but... Disneyland! We need Disneyland.

When you came the first time they were like

"no Disneyland, you need to experience the culture first"

Yeah.

It's pretty much what I expected.

I think that it's half what I expected and half not.

On one hand you have what the media portrays and that's quite forward

and quite savy.

But then on the other side...

You go out of the city and people are using stick broom things

It's still quite traditional in places as well. I don't think I expected it to be as traditional.

It was really like we saw in Switzerland because we saw trains

There are so much people in there.

The rush hour and all...

This is one of the only things we

we see in Switzerland of Japan and we expected that.

It's new for us because in the trains we have space.

We can even sit.

In the trains here you can't even sit so we have no space.

Yeah that's one thing.

As he said, the videos where people push others into the train

are really true so...

I kind of distrusted them but...

They are true.

It's quite the same. I watched so many J-dramas.

It pretty much looks like the same.

And you watched Ask Japanese!

Yeah!

I am subscribed to you guys.

Is Japan featured in the media in Malaysia a lot or not as much?

They used to feature a lot of films and dramas in Malaysia

But that was 20 years ago.

Office ... Para Para...

Right now they only show just Anime.

Anime is the main feature that's broadcasted - And Music.

Which artists are popular in Malaysia?

Arashi... all the Johnny's idols.

I thought here would be more "geek" people.

In the streets like in Shibuya.

But there are a lot more ordinary people.

Like we are used to it.

Less crazy fashion and styles than you expected?

Yes.

I think the level of respect and

the kind of humble culture it is...

I didn't expect to NOT meet people who are very expressive...

So extremely humble. Very cultured.

Kind of shy. The shyness, even when we go "Hey we like your shoes!"

they are like "Oh... ok..." and that's it.

So I wasn't expecting the shyness.

But it has helped to kind of change me in little ways.

I just feel more calm here and more settled.

I am really appreciative. I really like being here.

So it's been a good experience.

I think for me in the media back home there is not a lot of...

Japanese culture expressed in our American media.

It was refreshing just to be here and experience the culture

We found that there is so much culture. So much sub-culture...

there are so many intricate details that the Japanese community is just so

mindful and intentional of, that we don't experience in America.

It was eye opening. There are very small expressions of Japanese

culture in American media.

Coming here opened my eyes to kind of say, you know

there is culture here, there is room, there should be room

for the Japanese culture to be portrayed in the media

just as we are seeing it here in your community in Japan

So thank you for just...

being amazing, for you all being amazing, for what you do here and ...

how you are here getting the voices of the people onto the networks and into the media.

Thank you! Oh I feel really happy now!

Those were all the questions, thank you so much!

Expectations people had before and after coming to Japan

There is a very important story I would like to share with you so...

When I came to Japan for the very first time it was summer...

Obviously I looked up at fashion styles before I came...

And I knew it's gonna be very hot and it's gonna be like 30-38 degrees

So I brought a couple of light tops with me, the kind who has just straps.

Not really tube tops but the ones that have just like...

A little strap to hold it at the top.

I first stayed at a Japanese friend's house.

What she said is "Look if you go out into Tokyo you should not really show your

shoulders that much and don't expose your skin that much on the top area.

I was like "what do you mean?"

"If you can only see a strap that might be ok but if we can see your bra strap"

which might be beige or skin colored

that looks like underwear so don't show your bra strap.

So I was like "Right what if this strap is black?"

And she said "Black is ok again."

If it's white or if its beige it looks like underwear

And people might look at it in a different way.

That was one thing. Another thing, people in Japan

do not show their cleavage.

You generally don't do this in Japanese fashion like Lolita and Otome fashion.

You might have seen it in Gyaru fashion or Japanese fashion magazines.

Generally people don't show cleavage.

That's a big thing cause if you come to Japan in summer...

and wear the clothes that you generally wear and have a little bit of clevage

it might not even count as cleavage in your country

Oh my god will it count in Japan as cleavage!

Because girls don't really expose the chest area

so if you do that...

People will stare, people will notice.

Very short skirts in Japan however are totally ok!

That was a thing that surprised me. Skirts are very short...

The stairs are very steep...

The amount of panties that you might accidentally see...

might go up a lot compared to your country.

But the chest area stays covered in general!

Japanese people generally have nice and slender legs so they show that off

but they don't show much cleavage.

If you come to Japan be a little bit careful about that.

Because people might look at you in a different way.

And... you don't want THAT kind of attention.

Just cover the area a little bit more.

Wear a cardigan on top or

maybe pick a shirt that doesn't have a cleavage.

So that's one of the things, don't show your skin too much.

Also you see that in Japan the beauty standard is very high.

Arms are thin and skinny, people are thin and skinny

That's another thing if you go to Shibuya

You will be surprised because there is barely any people of age

or people that are not attractive

everyone is fashionable in that area.

I thought I was prepared for the fashion when I came the first time

cause I had different sets of clothing with me

but even with normal clothes, don't show too much skin.

On the top area. Just a little hint for you girls.

I mean guys you probably....

don't really mind? I guess you are happy about that?

In a way... I assume...

Anyways before I keep rambling.

I wish you a lovely day, I catch you soon on Ask Japanese or on my channel

Looking forward to reading what surprised your before and after coming

to Japan or going to a different country. Bye.
