Hello, I'm Christian Munoz, and this week is about political leaders on Now You Know Nebraska!

In 1986, the eyes of our nation were focused on Nebraska,
as our state achieved a historical first.
Republican Kay Orr and Democrat Helen Boosalis won their respective primaries,
making Nebraska the first state to have a woman running against another woman for Governor of a state.
At that point in history, only seven women in the entire United States,
had even been elected to the position.
Boosalis had been the first woman elected mayor in the city of Lincoln's history,
Orr had been the Nebraska state treasurer.
They ran a race of respect for each other and even had fun.
At Boosalis's suggestion, they both rode elephants across downtown Lincoln,
when the circus came to town during the campaign.
Kay Orr would win the election 53 percent to 47 percent,
and become the first Republican woman elected as Governor of a state.

Nebraska's first territorial Governor holds a unique record that I don't think anyone ever wants to break.
Francis Burt was a 47-year-old editor from South Carolina,
appointed by President Franklin Pierce to be Nebraska's first territorial Governor.
But his trip to Nebraska was a rough one.
Headed for Bellevue, Burt had to travel by railroad, stagecoach, steamboat, and wagon.
He finished the journey by walking on land.
He became ill in St. Louis, and by the time he arrived in Nebraska he had to go straight to bed.
He would spend every moment as territorial Governor in that same bed.
He took the oath of office in it and died two days later.
As a result, he is the shortest term chief executive in Nebraska history.
It's highly unlikely that record will ever be broken!

Hi my name is Katrina Eames and this will be the tenth video that I am making for my
project of making a video everyday during lent which is traditionally when this begins
to become more difficult.
♫♪♫♪
I've never really been a traditional person.
I don't like to do things without reason or without knowing the reasons behind doing
something, but I do like patterns.
I like analyzing my own behavior and I know from previous years when I've attempted
to make a video every day for a month that I begin to get discouraged right around the
tenth day.
This is the day that I run out of ideas.
This is the day that I begin to feel a little bit dried out.
Today is the day that I experience brain crack withdrawal.
I am running out of ideas.
I can of course finish editing the last collabs that I filmed at nerdcon.
I can put together my thoughts from places video.
I can talk about more social and political issues that I care about.
I know there are things I can do and make, but honestly I am more than anything beginning
to get unmotivated.
I don't know why I am unmotivated.
I should be excited – I just hit 300 subscribers which is a milestone for me.
I'm happy to have all of you lovely new people in my community and to be able to talk
to you, but what if you decide that you don't like me?
What if making a video every day isn't just draining on me, but makes some of you decide
that it isn't worth it to stay here?
So, as it turns out, I'm not out of ideas – I have plenty left to do.
I'm anxious.
Which is my default feeling, but that doesn't actually make this any easier to deal with.
Anyways, please don't leave after watching this.

we don't really need that much
we don't really need that much money, for example
that's why I'm hitch hiking
When I stay somewhere I often camp
so you don't have to pay a lot for that and I often free camp anyway...
To get food sometimes and depending on the country you can dumpster dive
or you can figure out what you can do to
for a little bit of work and my thing is music
and I really enjoy that because you get to meet so many people
this is what I use while traveling
I really can survive without money for quite some time
but it's not only about that!
... is just one thing, just one perspective
My project is all about inspiring people to live life differently!
is not just about busking... is not about even traveling or hitch hiking
it's about what you feel right to do
also just to give a lot more perspective of many things
this is what I'm working on now
I would like to be people a little bit more independent
in their thinking
to open up the creativity and to reduce the negativity that we have in our world
stress, negativity and aggression
and i think it can be done, very well done
by just opening people up in a creative way
and this can be done by just suggesting many perspectives of one thing
it helps us actually to be closer to each other
but in a different way
and I think in more deeper way
cause we can actually...
when we open up we can communicate more
we can use more of our skill, of our capacities, of abilities
I think we can go deeper
This is one of the best things that another person can give to another one
Just unstress about so many things
and seing the world in different way, in many different ways
All in the same time... I believe everyone can do this
It just needs to be... you need to talk to the people
That's why I want to continue to travel
So this is the sign for you to start changing something in your life already today, like I did once!

Hi again, it's Christian Munoz, and it's time for another Now You Know Nebraska!

Nebraska, specifically Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue,
played a critical role for a U.S. President on one of our nation's darkest days.
When the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 started,
President George W. Bush was in Florida, speaking to children at a school.
Once it became clear that America was under attack, his plane, Air Force One,
headed towards Strategic Air Command at Offutt in Nebraska.

The base is set up to allow a President to securely communicate with his national security team,
and if needed, run the country from its underground location.
After talking with his team via video conference,
Bush convinced the secret service that it was essential for him to return to Washington.
In all, the stop lasted just two hours.
But it did play an essential role in making sure the United States President was safe,
on a day which took our nation by surprise.
