One of the common emotions that many people feel often is guilt, whether it is justified
or not. We tend to feel guilty over so many things, such as saying the wrong thing, something
that went wrong, or forgetting something. It is important to remember that guilt is
a reflection of our own conscience. When we feel guilty, it has to do with something engrained
in our own value system.
Also of importance, is to always remember that guilt helps us to grow and improve ourselves
in certain areas. Yet, an excessive amount of guilt is not good for us, either psychologically
or emotionally. If you feel so guilty that you carry around that weight each day, it
will literally tear away at your health.
Today we will discuss some things that you should stop feeling guilty about:
1. Do What You Want
Now, we all know that we cannot just get up and do whatever we want everyday. We all have
limitations and responsibilities; however, it is important to take control of your day and
allow yourself to self-indulge, at times. Take an afternoon off or treat yourself to
a little dessert. Do something everyday that is simply just for you.
Use this time to reflect on your own needs and to let go of anything that's troubling
you. Make a conscious effort to talk yourself out of getting stuck in your mind, thinking
about whatever is going on, and just letting go.
Sure, taking a walk will not make all your troubles go away, but it will allow you to
be more grounded and better able to handle them. These moments are essential to your
well-being and for that alone, you should not feel guilty about taking them.
2. Say No
Again, you cannot simply decide that you're not going to take on the responsibilities
that you put in your life, but you can control the additional burdens that come your way.
You should not feel guilty declining an invitation, declining additional work or anything else
that your mind and heart are telling you to say "no" to.
3. Get Away From Those That Do Not Make You Feel Good
You've probably heard the saying that we become like those that we surround ourselves with.
So, those toxic people in your life that do not support you, bring you down, and just
do not get along with you, are a huge source of your guilt and stress. You do not need
them in your life. Now, sometimes these people are family, coworkers, or someone else that
we cannot simply escape. However, you can choose to not to spend any unnecessary time
with them and distance yourself from the negativity. In doing so, you will better your
emotional health and you should not feel guilty about that.
4. Express Your Opinions
You should never feel guilty for expressing your own opinions, even if they differ from
others. Often we hold our thoughts and feelings in because we fear that they will hurt someone's
feelings or they will let someone down. Telling the truth is always for the best and it can
be said in a respectful way that does not aim to hurt anyone's feelings.
By telling the truth about your opinions or emotions, you are able to help the other person
understand where you are coming from. By being silent and waiting for that moment to pass,
you are not doing anyone a favor.
5. Meeting Your Expectations
In life, we tend to aim high. It is how dreams are made and accomplished. However, there
will be times that we do not accomplish those goals and we fail. Then, we turn inside and
we beat ourselves up. This must stop immediately. First off, you are not going to meet every
goal that you set. That is how you grow personally, professionally, emotionally: by learning from
our mistakes. Stop feeling guilty for not meeting all of your expectations.
As we discussed, there are many times that feeling guilty is not beneficial to your well-being
and is holding you back from personal growth. At other times, when we know that we've done
something wrong, the guilt we feel will help to shape us. Now, we would like to hear from
you. What are some things that you think are justified to feel guilty about? What are some
things that people should stop feeling guilty about? Continue this discussion in our comment
section.
