Author Origin Tag - Duration: 11:48.

Heya, book nerds!

I'm Meg LaTorre, and on this episode of iWriterly, I'm excited to do the Author Origin

tag.

I was tagged by Natalia Leigh and Lenn Woolston.

I'll include a link to both of their videos in the description below as well as the original

tag by Evie Driver.

Before we get into today's content, make sure you hit the subscribe button if you haven't

already.

Here on iWriterly, we create videos about how to be a successful modern-day author:

the ins and outs of writing, being an entrepreneur, author platform, and publishing.

If that sounds like something you're interested in, be sure to ring that bell so you're

notified every time we upload a new video.

For those who might be new to YouTube and don't know what a tag is, it's essentially

a video where you answer a list of questions.

One creator on YouTube will create the list of questions and tag people at the end of

it, who are supposed to then answer those questions in their own video.

You can also do a tag video regardless of whether you've been tagged, so long as you

include a link to the original video in your description.

Stay tuned to the end of this video to hear who I tagged!

1. BACKSTORY

When and why did you start writing?

How old were you?

In which genres did you begin writing?

Like many writers, I first started writing as a kid.

When I was 10, I wrote a fantasy play.

After that, I wrote my first "novel."

And I use the term very lightly.

But it was a portal fantasy and involved pirates.

When I was 17 or 18, I took the idea of my very first novel and wove it into a YA portal

fantasy.

Years later when it was completed and queried, I ended up scrapping the whole thing.

Again, I kept the kernel of the idea and rewrote the story to be epic fantasy and changed the

age group to adult… and I'm thinking about rewriting it again.

More to come on that later.

2. PROTAGONIST

What was your first main character like?

How have your tastes/muses changed since then?

The main character in my first completed novel was the typical YA female protagonist who

is discovering she has magic while falling in love.

Compared to my characters today, she was pretty passive and two-dimensional, letting others

around her take the lead.

When I write today, I'm a huge fan of diverting from tropes wherever possible and having my

protagonist's choices (and mistakes) move the plot.

3.

ANTAGONIST: What's the worst writing advice or feedback you ever received?

What was your first rejection or confidence-breaking experience like?

The worst writing advice I received happened when I was in college.

I had originally wanted to become a nutritionist and work in a hospital setting to help patients

live healthier lives--in tandem with pharmaceuticals.

Later, I realized that wasn't my calling and swapped to studying English/writing.

The worst feedback I received was none at all when I asked how writers could be traditionally-published

today.

None of my professors had gone through the process of getting an agent or even knew that

was part of the process.

Looking back, I'm disappointed that my educators weren't well-versed in book publishing and

also at myself for not doing more digging into traditional publishing right away.

My first confidence-breaking experience also happened in college.

My professor told me I was a bad writer and that my story ideas weren't good enough.

She was the first person who told me I couldn't make it as a fiction writer--which was and

is my passion.

After wallowing for a few days, I decided I was going to prove her wrong.

And I worked my butt off to create a solid story that semester for our final project.

I'm happy to say that at the end of the semester, she admitted she'd been wrong.

4.

SUPERPOWER: What part of writing or the writing process do you feel is your greatest strength

(emotion, showing [vs. telling], drafting, revising, character flaws, etc.)?

As many of you know, I formerly worked as a literary agent apprentice and I'm also

currently a freelance developmental editor.

As you can imagine, one of my strengths is editing and polishing a story.

Specifically, I would say I am strong in looking at an early draft of a manuscript and pulling

out character voice and world-building.

5.

KRYPTONITE: What part of writing or the writing process do you feel is your weakest?

One word: DRAFTING.

Despite being a plotter and writing chapter-by-chapter outlines (in other words, I go into first

drafts REALLY prepared), I drag my feet to get those initial words onto the page.

6.

TRAINING MONTAGE: What strengths or weaknesses changed over the years?

Additionally, what have you done over the years to better your craft?

I used to be a pantser, but after writing several books and realizing I was an over-writer,

I found that writing (very detailed) outlines helped me to keep my story moving in the right

direction.

Now, I'd say outlining is one of my strengths when it never used to be.

As far as bettering my craft, I spent many years writing tons of different manuscripts,

studying writing in school, interning at a literary agency (prior to becoming an apprentice),

participating in workshops and critique groups, and working as a developmental editor.

I also worked as the lead editor for several magazines over the course of my career.

I believe all of those things have made me a stronger writer and editor.

7.

WEAPON OF CHOICE: What programs have you used over your writing journey?

What is your favorite right now and why?

I love Microsoft word and Google documents.

Microsoft is great because of features like Track Changes, but what I love about Google

documents is that I can access my manuscript at any time.

If I have a few minutes before picking up my toddler, for example, I will often write

a few paragraphs of my manuscript on my phone.

8.

TRUSTED SIDEKICK: Every Batman has his Robin.

What is your favorite companion to cuddle or consume while writing?

Has this changed over the years?

If so, does this also differ from daytime to night time?

I've always been most productive in the morning, so my favorite thing to consume while

writing is coffee or tea.

As a toddler mom, mornings are also usually the only time I get to myself during the day.

9.

ZERO TO HERO: When you first began this journey, what level of success did you imagine for

yourself?

Is where you're currently at on your writing journey heading for the destination?

If not, how has your dream evolved over the years?

When I began writing my first full-fledged manuscript toward the end of high school,

I had imagined I'd be traditionally-published in my late teens or early twenties.

I looked at authors like Christopher Paolini, wanting to reach what I considered success

at a young age.

Many years later, I'm thankful my story never reached the hands of readers.

(Because it wasn't very good!)

Taking the time to work on my craft these past years has helped me to find my voice

and my sweet spot in the industry.

Although I still hope to be traditionally-published one day, I wouldn't be surprised to find

myself as a hybrid author down the road.

10.

REMEMBER MY NAME: Fame!

What authors helped you realize your interest in or passion for writing?

What books helped shape your writing style, genre of choice, or tastes?

I've mentioned this in previous videos, but I'd consider Robert Jordan's Wheel

of Time series to be my gateway books into being a hardcore lover of fantasy.

I'd also consider Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER series to be my gateway book into romance

and historical fiction novels.

But it wasn't until I read NEVERNIGHT by Jay Kristoff that I finally found a writer

whose voice moreso mirrored my own.

Don't get me wrong, Jay Kristoff is an incredibly talented and I don't pretend my writing

is anywhere near as good, but I was so happy to find another writer who was more similar

to me stylistically, compared to the epic fantasy with the formal language I'd read

for years.

11.

MARVEL VS DC: Comparison is dangerous.

How has comparing your author journey to others' dismantled or helped your own?

Any advice to overcome this?

I definitely struggled with envy for writers who experienced success at a young age because

that was something I had dreamed of for myself.

I had wanted to make a career in writing and editing books right out of college.

However, seeing the success of others, I changed my mindset to be happy for them.

Then, I kicked myself into high gear to focus on my own path and find my own success--which

is going to be different than theirs.

12.

THE OBLIGATORY LOVE INTEREST: Looking back on your earliest projects, what genres have

you grown to love or hate to write?

I wouldn't say genres, but age groups.

I had originally written YA fantasy in my first manuscripts.

Now, I much prefer writing manuscripts for adults.

13.

ARCHNEMESIS: What are the most common excuses you've given to yourself or outside forces

you've overcome that prevent/prevented you from writing your story or crush your confidence?

When I was first starting high school, my dream of writing a book really materialized

in my heart.

At the time, I believed I had to do things in the "proper" order--go to high school

and college, graduate, get married, have kids, and THEN write a book.

All of which were things I did want to do, but for whatever reason, I had thought I couldn't

write a book until later in life.

Thankfully, I met my now-husband at age 18, who showed me that dreams are things that

shouldn't have to wait.

14.

SUPERHERO NAME: When you began, did you consider using a pen name?

If you're using a pen name now, why did you decide to use one?

If not, why did you use your real name?

I have a pen name that I'm keeping in my back pocket for a rainy day or for another

genre (besides fantasy, space opera, and steampunk).

When I began working at a literary agency, I (of course) had to use my legal name.

My social media presence grew pretty quickly.

Around the same time, I was writing on the side and launched iWriterly under my name

as a way to help writers hoping to be traditionally-published.

After having to step away from my role at the agency due to personal circumstances,

I decided to shorten my writer name to just my maiden name, and kind of just went with

it.

15.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE: Tag a few of your favorite people to do this tag on their channel!

I did a preliminary search and I'm hoping these folks haven't been tagged yet.

I'd like to tag: Bella Rose Pope, Lily Meade, and Brittany Wang.

Thanks for tuning into this episode on iWriterly, the

Author Origin tag.

How to budget for your web design project 💸 - Duration: 7:47.

WEB DESIGN IS BROKEN ...it's just crumbled to sand in your hands and it's just

disappointing. Today we are going to talk about budget that the big one: budget

budget BUDGET! It is such a huge topic but I'm finally gonna lay down the final

word on budget, specifically how much you should spend when you're buying a

website. I've got the answer for you. You ready you ready for it?

500,000 pounds a week! There we go! Did it! (that was easy)

I'm out. See you later. (web design is fixed) No. If you do have five hundred

thousand a week to spend on a website you should get in touch with me. I think

we could work with that... Budget it's such a huge topic no one's really kind of

tackling the answers of a few there's a few articles on the internet that are

like "well if you want this type of website you should spend around this

much and if you want that type of website you should spend around that"

Much it really comes down to a few factors namely your attitude towards

risk, whether you're whether you're coming from a gain or a pain perspective

and how much you actually stand to make out of it. What you're really doing is

investing in a website: you're looking for it to create a return you want it to

be putting money back into your pocket. If you don't want it to do that then

it's only gonna be acting detrimental, it's only gonna be taking money or

reputation or whatever out of your pocket and you really need to rethink

the reasons why you're doing this in the first place. Go back to one of my

previous videos where what where I ask you the question why

are you doing this in the first place. So the first thing that we've got to

understand when we're asking the question how much does a website cost,

how much do I spend on a website, we've really got to appreciate that

all you're doing is you're trying to give yourself what they call

an 'anchor' This is literally just a psychological stake in the ground so

that your brain can go "okay well I've got a point to start from" It really

doesn't matter what that number is but it becomes your anchor: the first price

you hear becomes your anchor and around that point you will base all value

judgments. So be careful when you're asking this question because you might

end up with another massively overinflated number that completely puts

you off of even going down that route when actually you could have got

something that worked for you at a reasonable price, and if you get a number

that's too low you're gonna look around and think "hey

well this is all way too expensive" and not actually start engaging in the

conversations to help you understand the value that it could bring there is.

Another thing that you need to be really aware of when you're trying to create a

budget for our website and that is that you like me like everyone else on the

planet we are naturally risk-averse: yeah we have

loss aversion. Most people agree with the statement that "it is better to not

lose five pounds than it is to find five pounds"

It's the same five pounds! It's weird we're hardwired to avoid losses. We try

and keep what we have and therefore we're less likely to risk that in search

of future gains so this means that you're naturally going to be skeptical

about the gains that you can create with a website you're naturally gonna want to

spend as little as possible and that means that you're at a risk of

actually under investing when you're buying a website

You risk of under-investing because you're

averse to loss. I'm exactly the same: the amount of times that I've bought things

that I need on say Amazon and gone for the cheapest possible one because I

wasn't entirely sure if, you know, if it would bring me the thing that I was

looking for - the reality is that I end up spending double because, you know, buy

cheap buy twice. But you can actually under invest and if you do especially in

something like a website it's like under investing in in your team member:

if you if you hire a new salesman and you under invest in him well then he's

not gonna do as good a job as he possibly could do if you're picking

if you're picking your team members based on the salary that they're

willing to accept then you're probably under investing and you're not actually

realizing that if you spend a little bit more you can get like disproportionately

larger returns. The third thing that you really need to be aware of but before

you start thinking about your budget is whether you're coming from a pain

perspective or a gain perspective. Are you looking to this website to help you

reach new markets to help you, I don't know, dominate the competition; to help

you boost sales/ Is it a gain thing? Are you launching a

new business a new product? Or are you looking at it from a pain perspective?

Are you looking at it and thinking well how can I use this website to help me

automate things, cut costs, reduce overhead - things like that. Maybe you've

got a whole bunch of bad reviews on your existing website and so you're almost

being forced by your customers forced by your marketplace to up your game what

you're really trying to do there is manage losses. You approach these ... you can

buy the same thing in two different ways and your experience and therefore what

you're willing to spend completely changes depending on whether you're

coming from a pain or a gain perspective. The final line on it is using an analogy

that we use sometimes it's based around cars

basically. Are you are you just trying to get to and from work or are you trying

to win Formula One the Formula One Grand Prix you need very different types of

cars to be able to do each of those things. There's no point in buying a

Formula One car because when you pull up in the Sainsbury's car park you're gonna

have nowhere to put your shopping. Likewise there's no point in buying a

Fiat Panda and taking it to the track. So the better you can understand what type

of race is that your business is trying to win, or what type of things your

business are trying to do with a website and what that's worth to you is the

better you're gonna be able to start creating a realistic budget and get a

return that's more in line with your expectations.

My name is Aaron Taylor I'm helping you to make better decisions and have better

conversations when you're buying a website.

till next time. [singing] I fixed web design, said I fixed web design...

Should you sacrifice one life to save the lives of many? A Jewish approach. - Duration: 2:27.

You are an engineer working on a new railway project.

You see on the cameras a train speeding down the track about to kill a whole group of people

working on the track at the time.

You have a central override programme and can pull a lever which will divert the train

to another track on which there is only one worker who would be killed.

Would you pull that lever?

The philosopher Philippa Foot posed this scenario in the famous 'trolley dilemma'.

This dilemma is not just theoretical.

In the book Holocaust and Halachah, which explores how even in the horrors of the holocaust

Jews tried to keep Jewish law, the following tale is recounted.

A Jewish prisoner in a camp asked a rabbi this question...

"The Nazis have imprisoned 100 children who they plan to murder tomorrow morning.

My son is among them.

I can bribe the guard to free my son, but if I do the Nazis will grab someone else's

son to replace mine.

Rabbi, may I bribe the guards to free him?"

The rabbi didn't answer him.

From his inability to find a response, the father interpreted the Rabbis answer to mean

that he was not allowed to free his son at the cost of another person's life.

The Talmud, discussing a similar situation, says, "How do you know your blood is redder?

Maybe their blood is redder?"

Rashi, comments, saying: "Who knows that your blood is more treasured by your Creator than

the blood of someone else?"

That makes sense when talking about one person against another.

But how can we explain maintaining one life at the expense of hundreds or thousands?

Can't we say with absolute certainty that in God's eyes the lives of many people are

more valuable than the life of just one person?

It really depends how we measure the value of a life.

Judaism believes that each and every life represents a whole world.

No matter how many lives are being discussed we cannot pit life against life.

By pulling the lever to divert the train you are actively choosing to kill an individual,

and taking any life is murder, even if it's to save the lives of many others.

Obviously this is an oversimplification.

The complexities which go into making such a judgment are enormous -- which is exactly

why no human is in the position to judge the worth of somebody's life.

No one knows the potential or the challenges of an individual, or what God expects from

them.

We can never know someone's true value.

That is God's business alone.

things so I know it's gonna be awesome I'm so excited I'm also want to let you

guys know I don't know if you guys heard but we bought our building oh my

goodness I'm sorry

come on one charge are you so excited you prayed you believed you said come on

so good so excited about what God's gonna do and we're not about a building

but we are about people but I'll just tell you buildings make things a whole

lot easier right and some of you may be like what are they standing and cheering

hey let me tell you if you tore down and set up for four years you would be

sinning and cheering - and all my dream team said amen

oh we are so excited you know for those of you that don't know our church has

been going for four years and we've seen so many people give their life to Jesus

and that's just with a building that we use a few hours of the week how many

more people are we gonna see come into the kingdom with a building that we have

all the time we're so excited for those of you that don't know our building is

located on interstate 30 and it's right before you come into roy city and its

really interesting whenever we planted the church brian was driving a to Rory

city one day and the Lord spoke to him there was before the church started and

the Lord spoke to him right now the first thing you see when you pull into

roy city is the high school and the lord told him but one day the first thing

you're gonna see is you're pullin into rose city is gonna be the church and tom

goes on you know how sometimes you think well maybe we miss God like maybe that

wasn't God's Word and you kind of put it on the shelf and for those of you that

know we bought land and so we thought well maybe it's gonna be another way and

another thing and then whenever this building came up like God just made

himself so apparent and I think it's so cool now that the first thing you see is

you're pullin into Roy city it's gonna be our church isn't that so exciting oh

my goodness it makes me so excited so we are really really excited so we'll begin

the build-out process of that facility and we don't know how long it'll take

I'm praying it's done tomorrow amen I want everything yesterday and my

backup plan is tomorrow so but we'll move as quickly as we can

but we're really excited about all that God is doing next week is vision Sunday

and so for those of you that don't know twice a year we kind of refocus as a

church and our vision Sunday in September is where we talk about what is

the God's word for this house for the upcoming year and

every year we have a word that we kind of center around as a church family and

so you'll see that on the worship guides it says you are the one and so every

year it's something different and we don't just pull a phrase out of the air

as a staff and Brian and I we really pray and ask the Lord God what's the

word to this house for this next year and that's kind of what becomes our

focus and so pastor Brian's gonna be discussing that and talking about all

that we've done and where we're going as a church family I've already gotten to

hear a part of his message and y'all is so good so you want to be sure and be

here next week for vision Sunday so as you guys know we are in a series called

you asked for it so if you don't like what's been talked

about it's your fault cuz you voted for this some of your like

I did not vote for this but you did because you either voted or you didn't

vote right so this is what you got I think it's been an incredible series

Brian's message last week was incredible how to deal with difficult people I had

so many people tell me this last week you dealt with difficult people and you

needed that word and so that was an incredible one and then pastor Randy

kicked it off in the beginning on getting over fear and then the number

one most asked for topic was how to grow your faith so that is what we're gonna

talk about today and before I get my scriptures I'm gonna give a warning real

quick if you have children in the service I'm going to talk about a man in

the big red suit and so you might want to have them leave our cause a child to

cry in the last service so you might want them to leave go out in the hallway

away from a speaker and you've been forewarned and so other scriptures are

gonna be Romans 12:3 and it says to every man is given a measure of face I

may say every man every man tap your neighbor and say every man every man and

then Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God

okay so we are gonna look at those two scriptures today we're an unpack them

we're gonna learn how to grow our faith let's pray as we begin Jesus we just

thank you that this is a God appointed word at a god appointed time father

declare in this house every ear is open and receptive every

heart will be softened for the seed of the word of God we declare that no one

will leave the same that every one will be changed in Jesus name and everybody

who believed it said a men you know I really don't know at what point I

stopped believing in Santa I know that it was probably older than I should have

been it was my graduation day of high school

now I'm just kidding that was a joke and that I remember I truly like my parents

were the type of parents that they were all in like they were all in Team Santa

and they were all in teen Easter Bunny they were all in team tooth berry

I'd like they went to such extremes that it was ridiculous

how hard they worked to get you to believe and so I was always like one of

those people that I was like well I mean I'm gonna believe what my parents say

because I was the child that would get phone calls from Santa like in June and

June who gets a phone call from Santa in June has anybody know what I'm talking

about does anybody get phone calls from Santa

and June is probably cause you're bad kid like me now I look back on and my

parents are like I realized that my parents are just trying to get me to be

good and so I would get phone calls from Santa and June we would have footprints

through our house on Christmas Eve every single Christmas Eve there would be

jingle bells outside of my window and I knew if Santa sleigh was here and I was

just always like oh my goodness like it was so real like Santa was so real the

cookies were always eating in my house and not just a little bit like my Santa

was hungry and so he ate all the cookies anybody else have a Santa they all the

cookies and we would leave carrots out for the reindeer the carrots would be

gone all the evidence pointed to this was a real thing so I found myself in

like fifth grade and we were lined up for something it was the first of

December and we were lining up for a school activity and I remember just

telling how excited I was about Christmas coming up and I'll never

forget the girl was wearing a unicorn sweatshirt she was standing behind me in

line and I said yeah I said I just can't wait to see

Santa's gonna bring me and she goes you believe in Santa and I was like do you

not believe in Santa like he calls me and she's like no

that's done like and she calls to all of our her friends in the line she's like

can you believe that she believes in Santa and all our friends are laughing

and you know those moments were like no no no and I'm looking at her unicorn

sweatshirt I'm like are unicorns fake too like is that my whole world's like

crushing down in this moment and so I go home and I'm crying like I'm having a

complete mental crisis like everything that I have built my entire life upon

it's like falling apart before my eyes and I come home to my mom I'm like mom

we need to have a serious conversation I need to know right now what is Santa

real well honey he's real in your heart you know Santa's everywhere you know

he's real to all those who believe and I'm like no mom I need to know so then

she talks to me and then I'm like wait the Easter Bunny

she's like yeah him too and then I'm like the tooth fairy and she's like yeah

her too and I'm like oh my gosh I remember going to bed crying that night

like some poor child that was sitting in first service is probably gonna go to

bed crying too and it was awful it was like the worst moment of my life but I

look back at that and how much I truly believed in Santa and then fast forward

I turned 16 and back when I turned 16 there was two things every teenager

wanted number one is to get a job and number two was to drive a car what is

wrong with kids side note that you are 19 years old you still have a driver's

license what is wrong with you what is wrong with you get a job and drive a car

anyways um so that was me like on my 16th birthday I went to the DMV I passed

my driver's test still don't know how I passed that and because I definitely was

not good idea I didn't realize till I was 22

why cars honk tat me when they were getting off the interstate it was

because I was supposed to yield I didn't know what that's so that's what the sign

man I was like people are so angry when they get off the interstate thank you

Jesus that you protected me and so on my mom my 16th birthday I went and got my

driver's license tray and then I went and got a job that's what you're gonna

do too and so I went and I got a job and the

part is he told me how much I was gonna get paid and I believed him I didn't ask

to see his financials I didn't ask for proof I just kept showing up believing

that I was gonna get a paycheck and then the day I got the paycheck I went to the

bank I was like yeah I'll never forget I went and bought a hot fudge brown Sunday

with my money I'm like I'm rich I can buy anything I want and then fast

forward to when you think about the foolishness of buying a plane ticket

like especially nowadays because you buy them online like there is no proof that

you're really gonna get on an airplane right like you go onto Expedia they give

you this number that's like a confirmation number and you have this

email and that's supposed to be proof enough that you're actually gonna get on

board this plane right but you prepare you ask off work you drive there you

pack your bags and do everything believing that that little those few

words on your phone are gonna actually get you on the plane and I'm using all

those things to say this the Bible says to every man is given a measure of faith

you have faith it's just where are you using it and how are you using it seeing

I've just decided in my life that I'm not gonna give Santa Claus and give my

employer and give American Airlines the best of my faith I'm gonna give God the

best of my faith I'm not gonna believe more and all these other things that

really because who knows your employer they may not have any money you may be

working for nothing and that dude's broke it as a joke let's just be honest

right but I'm not gonna put more faith in my employer than what I'm putting in

God and I'm not gonna put more faith in American Airlines and what I'm putting

in God and the Bible says every man is given a measure of faith so if everybody

has faith then why are we seeing great things happen now I'll just tell you

that if today whenever you left here I gave every single one of you a plan and

it was alive and it was just a little bitty plant now every one of you

received a plant correct but it's what you do when you leave here that will

determine whether it lives or whether it dies and I'll tell you that every single

Sunday when you come to church the Word of God is sown in

to your hearts and it's what you do outside of here that's going to

determine whether it's going to grow and thrive or whether it's just going to

diminish and go away and I think if a lot of us got real honest here like we

all want to have great faith right we all really want it but then we find

ourselves just not really believing the way that we wish we should we could so

two things I want to establish before we get started is number one that you have

faith right we all have a say I have faith you have faith and I'll just go

step further it's as bigger as small as you made it to be

I'll go another step further you are as close to God as you want to be hello

number two you that your faith can grow in second Thessalonians 1:3 Paul is

writing and he says that he gives thanks for their faith that is growing more and

more in other words God's plan for your life was not salvation and that's it he

wants you to grow in the things of God he wants there to be something further

now I'll just say this that salvation is free but everything else you're gonna

have to fight for salvation is free I'm not talking about God loving you

accepting you I'm not talking about that I'm talking to the people who said I

want to have great faith and if you want to have great faith I want to let you

know that it's gonna grow so here's the thing is that if we were all the size

and the physical shape that we wish we could be we would all look like models

right now if you guys all decided like okay like I really want to be skinny I

want to have great gluts I don't have great abs I'm gonna do all this and you

had pictures of it you knew exactly what you wanted to look like you had a gym

membership it wouldn't work right not until you go to the gym and do the work

the weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar industry billion B

people pay so much money to try to figure out how to lose weight I'm gonna

give you the secret right now you ready you eat less and you move more that was

free I just gave that to you for free that's all you have to do and can I tell

you in the kingdom it's no different you eat more actually the word

and you act more on what he says if you want to grow spiritually you have to

change what you're putting in and change what you're doing hello but I think if

we'll be honest that we have to get to this place with faith I think for us to

really move forward it's unlearning what we've learned and

and usually when I talk to people and they're struggling in their faith it's

around these three things and it's number one that there's some things that

you just can't control there's some things that you can't control if you're

really gonna live a life of faith that means you don't get to be the boss of

your life and some of us if we'll just be real honest we have a hard time with

that cuz we want to be our own provider we want to know that at the end of the

day that we can pull ourselves out if we need to we want to know that we can put

on the game face pull it all together we don't need anybody we can pull ourselves

up by our own bootstraps but if you're really living by faith it means that

you're always living in such a way where it's one step outside of what you can do

in your own natural ability and this is why my friends most people never start

giving to God because you want to be your provider and I'm just gonna say

this I'm gonna throw this out there that you have no right to ask for God for

things that you're not willing to give him thank you all three of you I love

you I asked them to clap on that part good job cuz here's the thing is that we

want God to do something but we don't want to do anything to get it cuz we

want to be in control God you blessed me and then I will because we want to be in

control we don't want to live our lives in such a way that we can't bail

ourselves out but when you're truly living by faith it means if God shows up

that's that's the only plan he's our plan a there is no plan B and that's

really hard for people to get around faith submits its limitations to an

unlimited God and when you truly let go of control that's exactly what you're

doing every single day god I can't but with you I can

god I'm not able but with you I'm well able the second thing is you don't have

to have all the answers

most people get tripped up about the things of God they don't understand and

I'll just say this that I don't want to serve a God that I can understand

because if I can understand him that means that I'm just like him and I'm not

God I would make a horrible God I'm not that great at being a wife and a mom let

alone a god right but here's the thing is you gotta let go of having all the

answers there's just some things that I don't know I've been in ministry now for

17 years I didn't choose the ministry life the ministry life chose me I'm

married Brian and you know I didn't choose the thug life that though life

chose me anybody here know all right I see y'all thank you thank you for that

and so I remember I married Brian Anna I went to the grocery store because we got

home from our honeymoon and that's what you do in your adult you go to a grocery

store now I get my groceries delivered hey and so I was there and I was walking

down the bread aisle and this lady came up to me and she's like oh my gosh your

pastor Brian's wife I'm like he hath kind of and she's like I need somebody

to talk to and she started just dumping all of her problems of what was

happening and this happened and that happened I don't know what to do about

this and my jaw is like dropped open and I wanted to be like girl your life is

messed up like this is bad like this is bad you need help you need to talk to a

pastor like this is so bad and she's like what do you think like what do you

do you know what to do and I'm like I don't know I I don't know how to help

you like go see pastor Terry and and I'll say that it's 17 years later and

that's still my response to a lot of things I don't know I've sat in the

hospital room where they turned off life support on an infant child and literally

prayed to the moment that that baby flatline that God would resurrect it and

then once the baby was declared dead I thought okay Jesus like we're about to

raise this baby from the dead Lazarus here we go like we're gonna do this

prayed nothing happen I've gone to funerals where we stood and

believed God in faith and sat there and I was like this doesn't make sense but

I'm not gonna let the things that I don't understand about God keep me from

serving of God of the things I do understand about him and some of you are

getting so tripped up on why he left why it didn't work out why that person

rejected you why your loved one died and the things that you don't know about God

are keeping you from the good things that you do know about God because I can

tell you on the other side of the room I've been in rooms where we laid hands

and brain tumors disappeared I've been in rooms and in situations where the

diagnosis was so bleak there was no way and in a moment God's healing came upon

him I've been in rooms and in moments where we've seen breast tumors

completely dissipate I've been in situations where the couple looked like

they were gonna get a divorce there was no way out and in a moment God showed up

and did it but here's the thing is if I would have let the questions that I

didn't understand keep me I would have ever seen those miracles happen and some

of you in this place you're letting all the hurt and all the disappointment

define what you're gonna believe from God and there's some of you you got to

give the pin back to God and say you know what I don't understand it all I

don't have all the answers but God I know that you do and I know that your

word says that you will work all things together for your good so that's what

I'm gonna choose to believe one of my favorite scriptures it is in Deuteronomy

29:29 put this in your back pocket this is a great one it says that the secret

things belong to the Lord and I just think there's some things we just don't

have the answers for but I know that God is faithful and I know that the secret

things belong to him the third thing is there are some things that we will never

understand on this side of eternity there's just some things you want to

understand on this side of eternity there's so many times whenever you're

reading the Bible talks about when we come into heaven we'll see him face to

face as he is it talks about another place in the Bible when we get into

heaven that the things that were secret will now just be common knowledge for us

and I think when we come into heaven there's gonna be so much clarity about

things that we didn't understand cuz girl I got a long list like when I get

to heaven I wanna be like Jesus we got a long coffee day cuz we got to

talk about some things I got a list but here's the thing I'm not gonna let those

things keep me from serving God here on this side of eternity I'm gonna choose

to believe that he's good and he does good because I've seen too much good to

believe the bad over the good amen all right so how to grow your faith are you

ready this is good number one read the word you didn't see that coming did you

you wanted a secret you cannot grow your faith without the Bible in Romans 10:17

faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God I was I love numbers and

I think statistics are interesting and I read that eleven percent of Americans

have read their Bible from Genesis to revelations not in the last year I'm

talking about ever ever that's a staggering statistic and yet the average

American home has 4 point 4 Bibles sixty-one percent of Americans say that

they wish they read their Bible more fifty-four percent of Americans do not

read their Bible four times or less a year they said that they may reference

it they are not never but they're four times or less but this

is the part that was interesting eighty-eight percent of Americans say

that American culture has moved away from the Christian foundation that it

was founded upon I'm gonna talk to you real we should stop praying for our

government to change and come back to Christian heritage maybe your home needs

to come back to a Christian heritage maybe before praying for our leaders and

everything else to change you need to change listen to me moms and dads some

of you need to get into the word yourself quit praying for our schools to

change and you start changing the spiritual climate of your home because

here's the thing I won't stand before God for Trump I won't stand before God

for the strength of Supreme Court justices I will stand before God from my

home and for what I did and I will tell you

that I want on Judgment Day to stand before the Lord and say as for me and my

house we serve the Lord we've press into you we made the Word of

God a priority come on somebody we decided that we were to put God first

place reading the word is the only thing that's gonna grow your faith that is the

main thing I'm gonna tell you some other things but if you do nothing else but

read the word you're gonna have strong faith you have to read the word and I'll

say this that in 1st John 5 4 it says that this is the power that overcomes

the world our faith Matthew 6:33 says seek ye first the kingdom of God seek ye

what first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you

see we're seeking all the things without putting God first place we're saying God

when I get the job when I get the money then I'll take off on Sundays God when I

have all these things then I'll put you first place no reading the word is the

most important thing I believe it's setting God 1st place right in the

morning and I'll tell you that my best days are the days that I don't check

Facebook first email first text messages first can I get a witness and I get into

the Word of God first thing what is it doing it's saying God I'm seeking first

the kingdom and I know all these things will be given back to me and I'll tell

you just a free thing of I believe that there's a big difference between fast

food and gourmet food ok so think about this how many of you can remember every

meal that you've eaten in the last two weeks anybody tell me breakfast lunch

and dinner ok none of us can but every single meal nourished you and got you to

where you are today correct now how many of you can remember one really good meal

iron can you remember one really good meal in the last month I mean like good

like Britney like cooked for you it was good stuff Britney's like yeah I did

good once this month but how many of you can remember one good meal in the last

month ok like 10 of us I had a really good meal this weekend for our

anniversary we went out and was good but here's the thing it's not every meal is

memorable but every meal nourishes and sustains you there's fast food

devotional time and there's gourmet devotional time fast

food devotional time and the kingdom looks like this you put on audio Bible

while you're driving to work you put on a podcast while you're in the shower

right that's fast-food devotional time but then there's the time where we get

with God where we open up the Bible and we have a deep meaningful spiritual

moment if you're not doing that every day you're okay just make sure you get

the Word of God in you in some way okay like just start with a podcast on the

way to work start with putting the audio Bible don't start in Leviticus you'll

quit class okay but just start with the audio Bible as you're driving to work

you'll be amazed at how much it grows your faith and before long you'll find

yourself yearning to get into the Word of God don't start being like okay well

tell me today I'm going home I'm reading ten chapters don't do that you'll fail

I don't read ten chapters okay don't do that and so for those of you that don't

know we send out emails as a church every single week and they're always

full of good information and we want to send you a Bible reading plan if you're

not subscribed to our emails um you can do that by texting the key word email me

two three three seven three three email me two three three seven three three

follow the prompts and this week we'll send you a Bible read plan it'll show

you exactly what books of the Bible to read which ones you should read first

and then it'll work on down the line I believe it'll really help you start to

grow your faith or you'll get something good out of this all right number two

you need to begin to speak the word in Psalm 19 12 says that may the words of

my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing unto you

Romans 10:8 says what does it say the Word of God is near you it's in your

mouth and in your heart you are the greatest prophet of your life if you

want to hear what your life is gonna look like in ten years

listen to what you're saying put on a recorder around your dinner table or

when you're prepping dinner and see what you're saying what's coming out of your

mouth if you're saying that your kids are rebellious don't be surprised when

you raise rebellious kids when you're saying that your husband's are good for

nothing don't be surprised when he's a good-for-nothing come on if all you're

saying is that we're just broke we've always been broke everybody

our family's broke guess what you're gonna be broke I don't want to say those

kind of things I'm like I'm blessed say men if you say all of our families died

of cancer I'm gonna die at cancer well guess what come on but you get what you

say I love Jesus when he's teaching the disciples about faith in Matthew 21 he

says whoever will say to this mountain what does he say whoever will say to the

mountain be removed and cast into the sea it'll be done for him right but he

doesn't say whoever says to this mountain man you've always been there he

doesn't tell him say man that's a big old mountain I wish we didn't have this

mountain wish the Lord would have given us a smaller one no he says you're

supposed to speak the solution and for some of you you Neah start speaking the

opposite of what you see you need to get in your clunker vehicle for real I did

this for years I would lay hands on the steering wheel

and I would close my eyes and I would picture the car that I wanted and I

would begin to declare out of my mouth what it was gonna be and as I began to

say these things and declare them you know what happened God began to do

things I have a book that sits on my desk and it has all the things that I'm

believing God for for the year has how many I'm believing God for the church

and how many in groups and how many times I want to go to Disney a year and

I'm not joking where's Mickey Scripture it says that he will give you the

desires of your heart right my desire is Mickey Mouse amen but I say that to say

well as we've gone through the year Brian and I have been in agreement

and we've been declaring the word over those things and as we declared the word

over those things the other day when I got into the office

I opened up the book and I freaked out Tony and I ran to Brian's office and I

was like babe you're not gonna believe this

everything in this book is happening right now like oh my gosh because I had

put it that I was believing for but the end of the year that we'd have 800 in

attendance for the church we're over 850 now oh my goodness I had in there I had

60% of our church is going to be in group sixty-six percent of our churches

in groups now and all the things and I began to go

through one by one by one and see that didn't happen on accident it happened

because we got an agreement we began to speak what the Word of God says and for

some of you if you're believing God for finances here's a quick trip right

you're gonna trip out on this google scriptures on finances I know you don't

have to be super smart and it'll tell you all the scriptures on finances and

and didn't you just do this command P and print that bad boy out and then

stick it somewhere where you see it and then begin to pray the word back to the

back to God the Bible tells us in Jeremiah chapter wine that the Lord

watches over his word to perform it there's another scripture that says that

the angels hearkened to the Word of God so when you remind God what he said he

is obligated to begin to go to work because he will not be a liar and his

word is the standard that he begins to move things by right and so when you

begin to pray the word it's so powerful are you getting something out of this

the last thing I want to tell you is to begin to hear the word hear the word

that's not on your notes all my C personality types it's okay some of you

are freaking out that's not on that but the Bible says faith comes by hearing

and hearing by the word you be in here today I'm so proud of you you putting

God first place by coming to church on Sunday I believe God is real big about

the first and I believe when you come to church on Sunday

it's like putting him it's giving to God the first part of your week and you're

saying God I'm gonna put myself in an environment where my faith can grow I

want you to imagine spouses if your husband were to come home and tell you

girl I love you you know I do like Denver if you told Salem you know I love

you but I'm only gonna come see you one hour a week

do you guys think Denver would still be married and then three weeks goes by and

he hasn't come by and she's still waiting week four he finally shows up

sorry things have been kind of crazy busy I've had soccer practice and I'm in

a band and I got a lot goin on with work but girl you know I love you you know I

do she'd be like no you better love me with some time move back into this house

we would all say they were separated right why do you think your relationship

with God is any different maybe you feel distant from him because

you removed yourself he's still in the same place and when you start putting

him first place God wants to be first place seek him first the kingdom of God

all these things will be added under you friends I'm telling you God wants to

grow your faith why not because that's the only way he loves you and that's the

only way you can come to church I'm not saying out of like a legalistic thing

I'm saying it because he wants a relationship with you there's nobody I

love more than Brian sparks I mean I love him I'm crazy about him but we

spent a lot of time together and that's why we're so close and if you want to

get a close relationship with God it's gonna come with just spending time with

him and it might be on your drive it might be in the morning with you in the

word but I promise you this you're gonna begin to see amazing things you know

whenever we were believing God for the building in Caddo that we just purchased

it was like it was looking like we weren't gonna get it like everything was

going south and really fast it was not good and they had called us and said

there's actually another offer on the building and they offered full asking

price and then when they found out that we were offering they said we'll go

above asking price and they were a cash cell which meant they could close in two

to three weeks and so they were like I just don't know

well y'all like Brian and I both we felt like the Lord had told us like that is

your building and so I was sitting there and I was frustrated I'm like everything

in the natural is telling me it's not gonna work out but everything in the

spiritual like God I know that you promised us this building so I looked at

her staff I looked at Denver and I looked at Ashley and I said I'm gonna go

pray over this building like I'm gonna go pray over this building and so we all

got in the car I was like a hundred and Hill outside all the Texas people said

amen and we went out there and we're sweating bullets and we do what every

Christian that's crazy Christian person does we Jericho March that sucker y'all

know what I'm talking about we walked around that thing somebody you don't

even know what a Jericho March is you ain't lived till you die in Jericho

March and so we Jericho March that building we walked around at seven times

that's what the Jericho March means and we laid hands on that building and we

declared we begin to bind the enemy and we've been again to declare God we

declare that whatever we bind on earth is bound in him whatever we loose on

earth is loosed in heaven god we thank you this building is ours we prayed

until we felt like we had release and so I said okay guys like now the rest is up

to God we've done having done all stand and stand therefore so I was like we'll

just have to see what they decide so I get in the car we drive back to the

office y'all I walk in I sit down at my desk literally right when my bum hits

the seat my phone rings and it was Renee that was negotiating the deal and she

says she's screaming on the other end of the line she's like oh my goodness and

she was saying she goes they decided that even though they would have made

more money and they could have closed faster they decided they wanted a church

in there and so they decided to give the building to you come on somebody

but throughout this whole process the thought that's kept coming to my mind is

what if we would have compromise what if we would have just believed what was

happening in the natural and we didn't stand in the spiritual and I want to

declare over some of you that God's wanting you to grow your faith not for

you to be saved this is not about where you're going to spend eternity this is

about you believing God for the miraculous in your everyday life God

wants you to begin to see some amazing things happen but it's not gonna happen

with just doing a little bit of time every single week it's gonna begin to

happen when you begin to put the Word of God in and you begin to water the seed

that's on the inside of you and I'll promise you this I believe in declare

that God's gonna take you places you never dreamed possible

amen amen well I'm gonna pray for you if you're a husband and wife can you just

join your hands together I want to pray for every single person definitely want

to pray for spouses to father we just declare what I declare that you're a

miracle working God that father you can do anything and everything father we

declare in this house that father we will see great and mighty miracles and

then lord I thank you for every marriage Lord in this house the father where that

enemies been attacking where there's been confusion and arguments father we

just say it has to stop now in Jesus name that the enemy is trying so hard to

get you guys to separate cuz he knows if your faith gets together there's you are

an unstoppable force father I thank you right now for peace in every home that

god I thank you that husband's will begin to pray for their wives and wives

will begin to pray for their husbands and that God as they begin to get an

agreement that Lord there's nothing that they can't do with you on their side so

father right now I think you that you're watering the seed inside of every person

lord I declare over them that their faith is growing that they are strong

that they're believing you for great and wonderful things we believe in declare

in Jesus name and everybody who believed it said amen

well hey if you're here in the sound of my voice and you said crystal I do not

know Jesus to be my Lord and Savior friend let me tell you there's no better

prayer that you can start off with and that one right there you know I've been

serving God first eighteen years now and I can tell you my life has never been

the same I came into church because I wanted to be with the guy and Brian told

me if you're gonna date me like you have to come to church every time the doors

open and I wanted the guy so I came to church come on y'all ain't dumb and so I

wanted the guy in Wranglers and boots and so he's the cutest thing I've ever

seen and so I came in there for a guy but what I really encountered was Jesus

and sitting in a service like this I heard the gospel of grace preached and

in a moment I realized maybe God could love someone like me and in that service

I surrendered my heart and surrendered my life to Jesus and I can tell you he's

taken me places so much further than I ever dreamed possible and I want to tell

you that same God is here today and he loves you he's never given up on you and

today he wants a relationship with you just if everybody here if you could just

bow your head and close your eyes if you're hearing the sound of my voice and

you say Christo I don't know Jesus Christ

I don't know him to be the Lord and Savior never prayed that prayer maybe

you might say Christo I prayed that prayer but I made some mistakes and I've

fallen away but today I want to give my life back to him if that's you you want

to give Jesus your life for the first time or you want to rededicate your life

to Jesus on the count of three will you lift your hand one

two three lift your hand amen amen

thank you Jesus let's pray this together as a church family Lord Jesus I give you

my heart I give you my life take my sins and by your grace I take your

righteousness in Jesus name and everybody who believed it said a man a

man come on can we give it up for every person who just prayed that prayer so

awesome okay I want to tell you that we're so proud of you for praying that

prayer and we want to celebrate with you can you take a moment and text the

Have you ever seen a haggis? | Gaydio - Duration: 2:27.

Have you ever seen haggis?

Yes. A haggis, yeah yes.

I thought haggis was something you eat?

Well, it is. Basically, it looks a bit like a chinchilla...

... no, not a chinchilla you know kinda like big Guinea Pigs, they're kind of fluffy.

Oh, a haggis is an animal!

Yeah that's what haggis meat comes from like you could

artificially make it like by using an animal and preparing it but

basically they're like small animals, they've got two long front legs and two short back legs

it's a bit difficult cause they're easy to hunt in that respect.

I feel like you're you're making a joke here.

I'm a Scotsman I know what haggis is.

Okay, okay yeah.

They're quite endangered now anyway that's why they moved to this process of like artificial haggis.

If you know what I mean so they're trying to protect the species.

But they only exist in the highlands and that

is something that's true, a lot of people are like "Haggis, that's not true!" Genuinely, they are.

There's more even than the Loch Ness Monster, trust me. Okay.

I was always taught haggis was like sheep's intestines cooked in its own stomach.

Yeah, it is. That's if you make it artificially, if you want like 'fake' haggis, to protect it.

But if you were to get real haggis it's like the same thing, still sort of mince

like a mince flavoured thing and its preparation is still the same but there's two types.

Okay the reason I thought you're making a joke is I vaguely remember

reading like a story on Facebook like it was fake news or how there's an animal

called a haggis and it's front legs got longer and it kept dying because it

fell down the hills or something and that's why. No no, the reason it's easy to catch, that's the reason it's endangered.

Anyway, but yeah, we're proud of it... [giggles]... I can't do it, sorry, I can't

It's not true, it's not true, anyway.

So it's not! Oh for God's sake!

[Laughing]

I don't think I could have kept that up any longer!

The look of disgust on his face when I said he's making a joke

I actually thought I stepped on it I pulled the string there really, a hidden nerve. My God.

I did not think that would be that easy!

Pickled Asparagus Recipe | FAST and Delicious Spicy Pickled Asparagus - Duration: 3:23.

Welcome to Extreme Food Reviews! My name is Daniel

and today I've got a recipe for you that is going to blow your mind!

Pickled asparagus.

Now, I know what you're thinking

We usually pickle cucumbers, but when I tell you

This is an amazing, amazing recipe

Enough talking, let's get to it!

Are you ready? Here we go!

Start with about 15 asparagus spears.

Cut the bottoms off so that they'll fit inside of the canning jar.

I'm using a 1 quart jar for this recipe.

I'll cut one and use it as a guide to cut the length for the rest.

Next, let's grab some fresh garlic

We'll need about four cloves.

Let's use our knife to break them free so that we can peel them.

Slice the garlic coarsely and let's grab our peppers

I've got three Habaneros here.

One being my favorite Red Dominica.

If you don't want your pickled asparagus to be spicy

Just don't use the peppers that we included in this recipe

Next, I'll grab 10 Thai chilies

Cut the tops off them and cut them into smaller pieces.

Now let's go over to the stove.

In a saucepan, let's add 1 1/2 cups of spring water

and 1 1/2 cups of white vinegar

to create our pickling brine.

We'll bring that up to a boil

and in the meantime, we'll prep a pan with extra virgin olive oi

and add our peppers and garlic

Just the garlic if you're going for the non-spicy version.

Heat really brings out the flavors of these ingredients

Which is why I always like to pan sear them first

while those open up...

To our pickling brine, let's add one teaspoon of whole black peppercorns

One teaspoon of Oregano

One teaspoon of whole mustard seed

One teaspoon of whole dill seed.

One half teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes

Instead of pickling salt

We're going to use one teaspoon of sea salt

Now, back at our cutting board

Let's grab our 1 quart canning jar

and put our asparagus spears in.

Then we'll add our grilled peppers and garlic

And next, very carefully we'll add our pickling brine

Doing this when it's hot allows the jar to create a seal as it cools.

Let's close that up and clean it off.

I'll shake it around and mix the flavors

Look how awesome that is!

I'll leave this out on the counter to cool for an hour or two

before I put it into the refrigerator overnight.

Three days in the refrigerator will have these spears tasting like heaven

And there you have it!

An amazing pickled asparagus recipe

That's going to change the way you think about pickles

Asparagus! Who'da thunk it?

Oh my gosh...
