What surprised you most about prison? - Duration: 1:40.

How quickly it became normal to walk through the prison gates. How much time

you actually get to do things that aren't really scary. There's not as much

aggression as I was expecting. It's actually a really human environment, in

fact I would say I have a laugh with the guys without doubt every single day. How

cheerful it can be at times it isn't always a fight, there isn't always

tension. I expected to come into an environment that was kind of chaotic and

fights and assaults and abuse and the reality was so so different. Of

course you have a few worries when you first start that's completely normal but

those go away quite quickly when you realise that the day-to-day is very easy

to get comfortable with and becomes enjoyable very quickly. So what's most

surprising for me is actually being able to enjoy my job

as much as I do. You can have a lot of fun and have a laugh with other staff

members and with prisoners and that definitely helps you to deal with the

more challenging aspects of the job. The amount of aggression I was expecting has

actually changed to 'these guys, these prisoners, just need our help'

and whether that's help in talking to them because they feel down and they're

missing their children or whether it's help through getting them into some sort of

education course. When you imagine a prison you don't necessarily imagine it

as just a place full of people. It's surreal and it's strange and it's

unusual, but it's just full of humans and I think the humanity that I found here

is what surprised me most in staff and in prisoners alike.

Apparently he's looking to encapsulate his crawl space, but he's got a gas furnace, and

he's wondering if that's going to cause backflow issues.

So, stay tuned.

Well, John, that's a great question.

And I highly recommend you get your local heating and air company to discuss this further,

or talk to your local codes enforcement.

But what I'm going to share with you is just a generalization.

Whenever you close up a crawl space, and you have the vent fan that blows out all the time

according to the EPA standards, that should be good enough.

But, keep in mind that local codes enforcements can be more strict than the international

residential building code enforcement.

Okay?

So, if your local codes enforcement requires something else for the gas furnace, then you

would need to check with them.

And the best place probably to check with, would really be a residential heating and

air contractor, because they're going to be more up to talking to you about that sort

of thing than trying to get hold of the local codes enforcement.

So, that's great question, it comes up often.

So, I think that before you get going with this, you check with them first.

But another thing to keep in mind is that if your crawl space is open, whenever the

wind blows, it's blowing air into the crawl space.

So, if it's not causing any back draft issues with that type of air or pressure on the crawl

space, I'm not sure 110 CFM crawl space vent fan is going to either.

But, again, just to make sure we're clear, check with local codes enforcement first.

Less than 20 years ago, a German child was born who appeared incredibly muscular.

Doctors followed his development and found that, at four and a half years old, the size

of his quadriceps was over seven standard deviations above the average for his age and

the thickness of his fat was nearly three times below the average, but otherwise he

was completely healthy.

His mother and several other family members, including uncle and grandfather, were reported

as being unusually strong, but none to the extent of this boy.

Genetic testing showed that he and his mother both had a mutation in a certain gene - the

mother with a mutation in one of the two alleles she inherited from her parents, and the boy

with a mutation in both.

The gene that held the mutation is associated with the production of myostatin.

Myostatin is one protein in a larger group of proteins called the transforming growth

factor beta superfamily.

They are responsible for the growth and development of the various tissues in your body.

Myostatin is predominantly found in your skeletal muscles, the ones that help you move around,

but newer research suggests that it might also play a role in the regulation of heart

size.

Its job is to restrain muscle growth and make sure that they don't grow too large.

A mutation in the myostatin gene can alter your cells' production of the myostatin

protein, resulting in an overgrowth of muscle known as myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy.

This is a rare condition that results in up to twice as much of the usual muscle mass,

with increased strength and reduced body fat, but with otherwise no known medical problems.

This is a very rare way to get super buff.

The function of the myostatin gene was discovered by researchers in 1997.

They were studying the effect of disrupting, or turning off, this gene in mice and found

that mice with the disrupted gene had skeletal muscles weighing two to three times more than

those with intact genes, indicating that the gene's role is to inhibit skeletal muscle

growth.

While this disease is rare disease in humans, similar mutations have also been observed

in certain breeds of dogs, pigs, sheep, and cattle.

In fact, Belgian Blue and Piedmontese cattle breeds, who both contain a mutation in the

myostatin gene, are often referred to as double-muscled.

They're super strong - and also, if i'm gonna be honest, a little scary… is that one looking at me?

I feel like that one's looking at me, right?

Since limiting myostatin production increases muscle mass and strength, scientists are exploring

ways to apply that knowledge to treat muscle wasting diseases like muscular dystrophy.

In experiments testing the effects of anti-myostatin substances, researchers found promising results

with muscle mass regulation and the maintenance of skeletal muscle during heart failure.

However, clinical trials with these kinds of therapies showed no effect on muscle strength.

And a 2007 study on mice found that inhibiting myostatin increased muscle mass, as we'd

expect, but didn't make those mice any stronger than the others.

Clearly, there is more to consider than simply stopping myostatin.

And before an anti-myostatin drug can be developed, scientists need to continue working towards

a more complete understanding of its effects on muscle development.

Hopefully someday soon we will get there.

What is the indirect object pronoun? The indirect object OI tells us to whom /

for whom is the direct object. Take a look at the following sentence

She buys a gift for Pedro. OD: same a gift for whom, is the gift for

Pedro. I'm like Pedro. When to use the indirect object pronoun we use the

indirect object to indicate to whom, for whom, the action of the

verb. Let's see the example again. She buys a gift for Pedro. For

who buys the gift? For Pedro OI same Pedro.

An implicit direct object sometimes the direct object is not indicated but rather

it is implicit. Let's see the following example.

He told him although the direct object was not is explicitly stated in this

prayer is implied. What is this prayer literally means he is

Special Education Program at Farmington - Duration: 1:51.

I came to Farmington for a couple of different reasons. I'm from Maine,

I really liked the sense of community here, the reputation of the education program and I really felt like I could be successful here.

Anytime I tell somebody I go to UMF, their first

reaction is, "Oh

that's where a lot of teachers have come from in my schools, or

If it's another teacher a lot of people say they wish they came to Farmington.

I think that really lends itself to the program and how it's prepared us.

We really get a lot of in-field experience and a lot of exposure to

classrooms. Our program really ties in

the community of Maine and what can we do for me and as educators.

In my student teaching I've been able to make a lot of connections, not only with the staff and

with my students, I've been able to make a great connection with my mentor who I worked with previously in the past. I've been

able to establish myself well in the school and in their community.

I chose to be a special education teacher because I'm able to work with my students closely to individualize instruction for them as needed.

I found that working with them

I'm able to really

understand what they need and their strengths and use those be an advocate for them and also be a cheerleader. I found it's really

rewarding as a teacher to see these kids have a lot of success. In my field experiences

I've been able to see first-hand the results of teacher shortages in Maine, specifically in special education.

Even though the profession is very demanding. It's also very rewarding and you're able to see student success every day.

The education program at UMF prides itself on being able to send

effective educators out in the community to make a difference in Maine for students and schools.
