Hi everyone and Happy New Year. This is
my first video of 2017. It feels good to be
in a new year. I hope your New Year's was
great. And with a new year and a new
month of course it's time for more
Book-of-the-Month Club selections. I've
been doing these videos for the past few
months and people really seem to like
them, which is great. And because of that,
Book of the Month has continued to reach
out to me and work with me on this video
to share with you the January selections.
And I know that I say this every month,
but I really think this is the best
month that they've had since I joined
which was last May. I joined last May and
I've really loved it, and I will continue
to be a subscriber. And I know that I
talk about it a lot on this channel
and on Twitter and everything, but that's
because I really enjoy it. This month
there are five selections as always, and
they are all so great, I can't wait to read them.
So let's just get right into it.
If you're new to my channel or you don't
know what Book of the Month Club is, it's
a monthly subscription service where
each month you get to choose one of five
books that is sent to you-- so you know
what you're getting, which is nice. Because
some subscription services, you don't know
and it's a surprise, which can also be fun.
But this one, you pay around $10,

box below this video. But it comes out to
around ten dollars for your first 3 months,
which is great because they're
hardback books, the shipping is free. And
like I said there's five selections;
usually there is a celebrity judge, but
this month they just had five of their
recurring judges, who are writers or
journalists or authors, different people
choose the books. And there are five
really great selections so I'm just
gonna get right to them.
The first one is "The Most Dangerous Place on Earth"
by Lindsey Lee Johnson.
This is set, as you can imagine from the
title, in high school.
It follows, I think, five students and
their new teacher who has come from a
kind of rougher area of California. And
she's coming to San Francisco, so these
kids are very privileged, and they
have some sort of incident that happened
when they were in middle school that
kind of ties them all together. And it
looks at all the different perspectives.
It sounds like it's kind of thrilling
and mysterious, and there's always sort
of one selection like that in each book
of the month selection. So if you're into
mystery / thrillers, this one might be the
one for you.
The next one is a YA novel, and
they've only ever done one other YA
novel in their selections, so I like that
they're starting to include that for
people who read YA or to find YA
books you might not know about. This one
I've never heard anyone talk about
before, and it's "Girls in the Moon" by
Janet McNally. I really love this cover.
It's about a girl named Phoebe who
is in a family of musicians, and they all
kind of hide their real selves. They
don't tell the whole truth, and it's
about her going to visit her sister who
lives in Brooklyn and kind of find her
own truth. But what I think sounds really
fascinating about this book is the
structure; it follows Phoebe, whose story
is being told in chronological order, and
then it follows, I think, her mom's
perspective or her mom's romance with
Phoebe's dad, as it moves back in time.
So you're getting these two alternating
stories going in different orders until,
I'm guessing, the end when you arrive at
some sort of conclusion. I read a book
like this last year that I really loved,
and so I'm interested to see how it's
played out in this one. It's nice to see
a YA selection. The third one that you
could choose is one that I've been
highly anticipating for the last like
month or so since I found out about it,
and I was really ecstatic to see it as
one of the selections this month, and
it's "Homesick for Another World" by Otessa Moshfegh.
You might recognize this name
because last year she wrote
"Eileen" which was a very highly acclaimed
novel. It was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
I read it and I didn't like it, so you're
probably wondering why I'm excited for
this. But it's because when I read that
book--I think I even said in my review-- it
would have worked better as a short
story or novella, because the author was
really great at capturing
feelings and creating these really vivid
images, and it's very visceral the way
she writes. But it just felt too drawn
out as a novel, and she would have packed
a bigger punch, I think, if it was a short story.
And this is a collection of short stories.
I think that people are even
more excited about this than her novel,
which speaks highly of it because a lot
of people loved her novel. I just
happened to be not the biggest fan of
the story, but I loved her writing, and I
can't wait to see what she does with
this collection of short stories. I have
a feeling this is gonna be a big one
this year. Fourth one is "Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk"
by Kathleen Rooney. Again,
one that I've never heard of, but once I
read the description i was completely sold.
It's about this woman named Lillian Boxfish,
and it is the last day in 1984-- so kind
of timely considering we just had the
new year. And she is 85 years old; she was
born in 1899, and she had a very exciting
life. It's the last day of the year
and she's taking a walk to a party, and
she's walking through New York City, and
I think it's about her kind of
recounting her life through the
different decades of the early 20th century.
And the people that she sees on
her walk and the things that she's
thinking about kind of echo back to
earlier times in her life. And I just
think-- I love reading from older
perspectives-- and I just think that this
sounds like a delightful read that I
really can't wait to get to. I'm so glad
that they include books that are not
necessarily talked about a lot in the
book publishing world online-- they're
kind of under the radar-- because I would
not necessarily have found this one without
them, and I think it just sounds lovely.
And look at that beautiful cover.
Gosh, I know i'm gushing over all the books
this month, but they're really so great.
The last one is in this package which is
how your book will arrive when you
select one, so i wanted to keep it in
there to show you. So I'm going to get
scissors to open it. Hopefully i'm
still in frame. So I'm just going to open
this up, and your book looks like that. It
is shrink-wrapped, like I say every month,
so it's well protected. And this month
it looks like there's a little extra
something in there. So each one of your
selections comes with the bookmark that
has a little blurb from the judge who
chose it. "Lucky You" by Erica Carter.
This one doesn't come
out until March, so if you select this
one you'll get it two months early.
This one sounds like it is about
three friends who live in Arkansas, in
this town that they went to college in,
after they graduated. And they kind of
don't have direction in life, and they're
all kind of struggling with different
things. One of them decides to leave
and asks the other two to join her in a place
called "The Project" which is in the Ozark
Mountains. It sounds like it's kind
of dark and disturbing, but sort of
funny too. I've never heard of this one;
again it doesn't come out till March, so
an early release you can get ahead of
the buzz. But I'm interested to see how
this one is. And like I mentioned there's
a little extra something this month,
which they sometimes throw in-- like
magnets or stickers, things like that-- and
this month they actually included an
extra book, which is really cool. And it
says "little book, big twists" and it is a
copy of "The Grownup" by Gillian Flynn,
which i have read. I actually own a copy
of it already.
So maybe i will be giving this one
away on like Twitter or Instagram, and
you can follow me @welldonebooks,
both of them, because i think in the next
week or two all do a giveaway, since i
already own this. This is a really great
short story; it's sort of a twisted take
on the classic haunted house story, and
of course Gillian Flynn is a great
dark and gloomy writer. So maybe that's
why they paired it with "Lucky You"
because this sounds like it's sort of
dark and twisted. I don't know if this
one only comes with "Lucky You," i'm
guessing it comes with every box, but I
don't know for sure. It's just an extra
bonus book that they're giving away this
month, which is cool.
So these are the five selections for
January, and i know i said this at the
beginning, but these are probably some of
the best selections they've had. I can't
wait to read them. I don't know when I'll
get to them; I have so many books to read.
But I definitely want to read all of
these. I'm particularly excited about
these short stories, but I'm definitely
interested in this YA novel because I
don't read a ton of YA, and this one
sounds right up my alley. So I'm going to
have to give it a shot.
