Hello Alberta. My name is Levi Neufeld. I'm a Fish & Wildlife officer for the
province of Alberta, and I currently work in the Barrhead district. With the long
weekend coming up I'd like to take the time to mention some of the more common
fishing violations that us officers come across when we patrol our water bodies.
The first one is people fishing without a sports fishing license, or failure to
carry them with them. Every angler must carry a paper copy with them while
they're fishing. The second most common one is people fishing on closed water
bodies, and the last one is people keeping an over-limit of fish or an
undersized one. We have rules and regulations set out to prevent over-harvesting of
fish. These include possession limit and size
limit. Several years ago the walleye population on Lac La Nonne collapsed.
This has resulted in a zero-catch limit for this Lake. Earlier this summer, I
received a report of poaching call from a concerned cabin owner. This call was in
regards to someone catching and retaining walleye on Lac La Nonne. I responded to the
location and found a boat that had similar characteristics to the one
described to me. I found five walleye in the bottom of the tackle box. They were
charged with exceeding possession limit for fish - $1,000 per fish. The angler was
also suspended from fishing for two years from that court date. Although
there are numerous fish and wildlife officers across the province of Alberta,
our officers cannot be everywhere at once. If someone sees suspicious or
illegal fishing, hunting or serious public lands abuse, they can contact the
Report a Poacher number.
