How Do You Split An Atom? - Duration: 4:23.Hello and welcome back to Life's Biggest Questions, I'm Ron McKenzie-Lefurgey.
There are certain scientific concepts out that that most people have heard of, but don't
quite know what it implies.
While you've doubtlessly heard mention of splitting an atom in school or films, you
may have missed out on how exactly this can be done.
So let's explore the wonderful world of nuclear physics.
If you want more Science videos, check out our "Biggest Science Questions" playlist
on the channel.
Now get ready, it's time to ask the question: How do you split an atom?
Now, you've probably heard of splitting the atom countless times before, but what
exactly does it mean?
Well, based on the vision of the atom created by Niels Bohr and Ernest Rutherford, it was
believed that the atom could be split using a nuclear reaction.
In 1932, this idea became a reality, when Walton and Cockcroft managed to split a nucleus
into two alpha particles by artificially accelerating protons against lithium-7.
This eventually led to modern nuclear fission, where the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller
parts to release huge amounts of energy.
It should also be noted that atoms are splitting around us all the time, through radioactive
decay.
Unstable atomic nuclei lose energy over time, emitting radiation in the form of alpha particles,
beta particles, and neutrinos.
Even everyday objects like bananas are technically radioactive.
A banana has roughly 450 milligrams of Potassium, and 0.01% of potassium is radioactive.
This means each banana containing roughly 45 micrograms of radioactive potassium, caused
by the splitting of potassium isotopes.
However, let's keep with the spirit of the question, and explore ways in which we can
intentionally split an atom.
One method you can use is the compression of radioactive materials.
This involves obtaining enough of a fissile radioactive isotope that fission will continue.
If there isn't enough, you can enrich the isotope, increasing the fissile isotope in
the sample, using gas diffusion or a centrifuge.
Then by compressing the sample, often with explosives, you can cause the atoms to push
closer and closer together, increasing the chance of released subatomic particles striking
and splitting other atoms.
This is the method used to create Plutonium 239-powered Fat Man, the nuclear bomb used
to attack Nagasaki during World War 2.
But that isn't the only way we can split an atom.
It can also be done by Bombarding Radioactive Isotopes, commonly using Uranium 235.
As with compression, you need to have enough of the isotope to make sure fission will continue
after the first split.
Then, by firing atoms against others of the same isotope, you cause them to split, releasing
neutrons, which in turn collide with other atoms, continuing the reaction.
Alternatively, you can fire subatomic particles like Protons, Neutrons, or Alpha Particles
at the nucleus of the fissile isotope.
But hey, this is 2018, can't we just do this ourselves?
Well, in a word, yes.
But it can be pretty tricky.
One particularly impressive example of this was made by Dr. Michio Kaku when he was in
high school.
By winding a 22 mile long copper wire around a football field, generating a magnetic field
20,000 times greater than the Earth's, he created his own version of the Large Hadron
Collider.
If you do this, it would allow you to smash ionized atoms into each other, resulting in
a change to the atoms.
If you want to actually see the particles, you can build a homemade cloud chamber!
A video showing you how to do that is linked down below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xky3f1aSkB8 Bottom line: You CAN try this at home.
But since it can be dangerous, and I don't want to get sued, I'd advise not trying
this at home.
So now we know the history and mechanisms behind the splitting of the atom.
But what use is this to us?
Well first, as previously stated, nuclear fission is often used to create nuclear weapons.
This was one of the most regretted discoveries of the century, taking millions of lives in
World War 2, but it certainly showed the power one could wield thanks to fission.
Thankfully, this power has since been wielded in more constructive ways, with fission also
being used in nuclear power plants.
These plants use fission reactions to release nuclear energy, which generates heat, which
in turn is used in steam turbines to produce electricity.
As of 2014, nuclear power accounted for almost 20% of electricity in the United States, and
ironically, 27% in Japan.
So not only has nuclear power provided a job for Homer Simpson, it's provided power for
millions!
Good job, atom splitting!

Natural Birth In Greenville SC - Duration: 2:56.The advantages of a natural birth the idea of natural childbirth can be very frightening for some new moms after
all
Haven't we've been told our whole lives that there is no pain on earth that compares with that of giving birth there has been so
much talk of the pain associated with natural
childbirth in fact that millions of mothers have been scared beyond reason at even considering this means of
Delivering their new babies into the world. It's time for women to rethink the fear of delivering their babies without drugs
Yes, childbirth, whether medicated or unmediated is painful, however
There are some distinct advantages to delivering naturally here are just a few of the advantages of natural birth for you to consider
Increased clarity the pharmaceutical painkillers used during childbirth leave women groggy
Disconnected and not really in the moment as it were it's sad
But many women report that these drug-induced Hayes's have actually kept them from remembering the birth process altogether
There are a few moments in life that are truly
Once-in-a-lifetime and the birth of your baby is definitely one of them when you deliver without the use of drugs
You will have increased clarity and connectedness with your baby throughout the delivery
Faster delivery the drugs that are used in epidurals to help to kill the pain
But they can also greatly increase the overall time that you are in labor
Experts agree that women who have not been medicated are better able to push effectively during labor and more often than not
deliver their babies quicker
Yes, you may feel more pain without the drugs
But you are more likely to be done with the process and enjoying time with your baby faster when you choose natural childbirth
Mom is in control when you get hooked up to an epidural. You immediately give up a fair bit of control over the birthing process
You are stuck with an IV and very little control over your legs when you choose natural childbirth
You are not reliant on an IV and can decide to get up and walk should you so choose?
Walking can help to speed up delivery and it's much easier when you are not encumbered by pain-killing drugs
Better for baby the bottom line is at natural childbirth is better for your baby's well-being
When you forego the epidural your baby has the advantage of entering the world without the haziness or confusion
Associated with the use of drugs we all want to give our children every advantage that we can
Skipping the epidural allows you to give your baby a distinct advantage from the very first moment they enter this world
Keep these advantages in mind as you decide on the childbirth method that is best for you and your growing family

So we're...oh [dogs continue to bark]
Like..."what is their favourite colour?"
[Nikkay] And you have to put down what Naomi's favourite colour is.
So don't look at my stuff.
[Nikkay] Put some seperation.
No, cause then we can't see each other. [barking continues]
Y'ALL GON HAVE TO STOP!!
[barking stops]
[laughs]

[N] Next question is:
[C] And you know, I put alot of this stuff on my Instagram story. And if you would've read it, you would've known.
[N] Oh, all those story quizzes? [C] Mmhm.
[N] Janiece, do you read her story quizzes?
[J] I do.
[C] No, she doesn't; I see.
[C] No! You don't, cause I see that you didn't look!
[C] No, you're not on the list!
[J] Sometimes I do!
[C] You can say these things, but I got Insight!
[C] and it's right there! [J] I understand what you're saying--

[J] I put Jean Ralphio's sister.
[J] From Parks n Rec
[J] The sister.
[C] I'm gonna have to Google that.
[C] I'll Google it when I edit it.
[C] I was thinking more of like...uh...

[C] I can hear the letters. You're wrong.
[J] I was right the first time!
[C] Give it to her, I'm sorry! [J] I was right the first time. [N] She put both actually.
[C] No, cause I told her to cross it out. [N] You put tea?
[J] I put tea, and then she was like "I heard coffee, so you need to put tea!"
[C] No, wait, wait, wait!
[C] What did you put first? [J] I put tea first!
[C] Okay, then that's wrong.
[C] So, did you change it to coffee?
[N] Yes. [C] Okay, then that's right!
[C] Cause I knew, it's--
[C] when you first wrote it--
[N] She wrote /makes scratching sounds/
[C] Yeah, like /makes scratching noise/
[C] I was like, "that's too short."
[C] And I was like "you need to change it."
[C] Then you /makes scratching noises/ and I was like "that sounds better."
[C] So it is coffee, so you got it right.
[J] You switched back to coffee again?
[C] No, I always prefer coffee. I just know tea is better for me.
[C] But it's not that we're arguing, it's the fact that you don't know anything about me.
[J] It's not that I don't know anything! [N] /sings/ You don't know me~
[both] /sings/ You don't know me~
[C] Oh!
[J] Oh! I mean...That's my answer so..
[C] Nicole! You know! [N] I already know!
[J] HELP ME!
[J] Obama. [C] YAAAAAAAAY!
[J] Yay! [laughing]
[C] As soon as she said spazz, I thought..."I would cry if I saw Obama."
[C] Anthony Bourdaine!
[J] Yes.
[C] Yaaay! [J] Or Obama.
[J] Halos.
[J] Cause cuties make you choke.
[Nikkay Laughs]
[J] I'm right!
[N] Sounds like a commercial!
[C] It's like she doesn't care that there are not facts behind it.
[J] You were just eating--wait...
[J] You just said you had an orange earlier.
[C] That's not my favourite.
[C] Just cause I'm eating it, that doesn't mean it's my favourite thing!
[J] UGH!
[C] I tell GG to get grapes. I tell her to get blackberries!
[J] When did she get blackberries?!
[C] We always have blackberries! [J] No you don't!
[C] We ate them all!
[J] when's the last time you had blackberries in the house?
[C] Last week! [N] Like last week!
[J] Well, you guys got oranges right now, don't you?
[N] So, because we have them that's her favourite? [C] RIGHT?! [J] Yes!
[C] What is this?
[C] I feel like I put so much thought into these, and she's just like,
[C] "Because you just had a Halo, it's Halos!
[C] And I'm just like...?
[J] You eat them upstairs--NO! BECAUSE YOU JUST HAD ONE BEFORE WE STARTED THE--
[C] THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S MY FAVOURITE!
[Nikkay Laughs]
[C] IT'S WATERMELON!
[N] Watermelon, Janiece!
[N] Janiece! [C] SEEDLESS!
[N] Seedless!
[C] GOD! [J] What'd you put?
[C] Coconut!
[J] NOOOOO!
[J] IT'S MANGOS AND I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT! [N] She like mangos!
[C] I know you do, but-- [J] I don't want to hear iiiiit!
[J] Noooooooo! [C] No!
[C] IT'S DIFFERENT!!
[laughing]
[N] Okay, we're gonna stop here.
[C] JUST BECAUSE I GOT ONE QUESTION WRONG YOU'RE LIKE "OOOH YOU DON'T KNOW ME," BUT YOU'VE GOTTEN 15 QUESTIONS WRONG!
[J] YOU HAVEN'T GOT ALL THE ONES RIGHT EITHER!
[N] YOU'VE GOTTEN 15 OF THEM WRONG!!
[N] We see that you guys need a break.
[N] But, Naomi wins...
[N] 30 to 20
[C] Oh wow! What does that say?! Just because she doesn't know coconut, she doesn't know anything about her niece!
[C] Thank you for watching.
[C] This was another segment with J-Stewie who doesn't know crap about me.
[N] One more: either or.
[N] Batman or Superman?
[C] Batman. [J] If I'm wrong...
[J] I'm gonna jump off this thing, land in the pool and drown cause I can't swim.
[J] Batman. [C] WRONG!
[C] I like SUPERMAN!
[J] You have nothing Superman! Nooo! NOOOO!
[C] You just don't know me as much as you think you do.
[C] And that's fine. I've come to terms with the fact that you don't know me.
[J] It's not that I don't know you, Naomi... [N] /sings/ You don't know me~
[C] She doesn't listen to me. [J] You listen to me!
[C] But you don't listen to me...
[C] It's come down to this...
[C] We're gonna break up, guys...
[C] Newly Weds over.
[C] Cut the cameras off!
[laughing]

Using Throwboy Social Media & Emoji Pillows in your Videos - Duration: 2:25.Hello! Hello! Today I am going to show you how you can use social media pillows to
spice up your social media videos. I'm Jade. Hope you're doing well. If you're a
returning subscriber welcome back and if this is your first time here feel free
to subscribe and hit that Bell notification icon so that you'll know
anytime I post something new. Alright as you can see behind me here I have a
collection of social media pillows, that personally, I use in my backdrops or as a
prop in my social media videos whether that be for YouTube, or Facebook, or
Instagram. And these particular pillows are made by a company called Throwboy.
They are one of the first companies to start making social media pillows, if I'm
not mistaken, going all the way back to 2007. And they make high-quality pillows,
they're very plush, the colors are very bright, the elements or the text on the
pillows is embroidered. There's even a hook at the back so that you can hook it
up onto a wall when you're using them in your backdrops. And this compares to some
of the cheaper versions that you'll find on Amazon for example, which I find aren't
as colorful, aren't as plush, there may not be a hook on the back, the lettering
and the elements on the pillows aren't embroidered. So I highly recommend the
Throwboy versions if you are looking for social media pillows. Now, you can see
amongst my pillows I've got the YouTube subscribe button, so I can use that as a
prop to say ''don't forget to subscribe''. I've got the monkey face, which I love.
I've got the poop face. Actually, some people say that's chocolate ice cream. I
don't know? What do you think? Is that chocolate ice cream or is that a poop
face? Let me know down in the comments below. Hey! Do you like monkey poop?
Laugh out loud I love monkey poop! But what I like even
better is when you subscribe! Oh yeah! People subscribing, that's...
All right, so as always, leave any comments down below. Remember to give
this video a nice big thumbs up. And let me use one of these as a prop: Don't
forget to subscribe! Again, I'm Jade. And as always: Rock and Roll

Announcement | New Series Coming Soon! - Duration: 1:37.What is up guys, it's DragonLordLeda with a quick update video.
At the moment, the publishing schedule is still irregular, not really consistent anymore
mainly because of schoolwork and life in general that's keeping my schedule busy.
So busy in fact that it's been hard to record any new content since the beginning of the
year.
However, I don't want to leave you guys hanging, so I will tell you a couple of new
series that are coming soon.
This month, I will be releasing episodes for my solo playthrough of Doki Doki Literature
Club.
I had a blast playing through that game and doing the commentary with, yes, probably by
the internet's standards, very cringy voice acting, but at the end of the day, I had fun
and hope you guys too.
As a bonus, once I'm done editing the episodes, they will be released daily, so keep an eye
out for that.
I'm also planning to do some Arena of Valor, VainGlory 5v5 with the return of my friend,
SoliD, and more solo series and the best way to stay up to date with all of this is to
either FIRE UP that subscribe button and hit the little bell icon for notifications OR
you can also follow me on twitter, @DragonLordLeda, where I am most active and frequent post new
uploads to. Thanks you guys for supporting the channel and I'll see you, in the next video.

Something's Missing... Also, Adorable Puppy News | Friday Show 03 - Duration: 4:54.Hello people of the internet. You may have noticed something strange this week.
Something is missing.
The videos that we said we were going to put up. That's it.
We made plans.
We made plans that we were going to go for a walk and sort out the shed.
And those were our videos for the week.
And er, yeah, we told you those plans.
And so fate went.... nah.
Let's give them a bug.
Ian's currently sitting in another room unable to speak.
It's a bit weird because he can only talk in a whisper.
Which means that I kind of find myself whispering back to him,
because if somebody's whispering around you you kind of feel that you ought to be quiet as well,
so it's like we live in a library all the time at the minute.
It's just very odd.
Since I've already had this cold twice, this time round's not so bad for me.
I mean a bit a bit not right,
but not like awful.
Anyway so what it's meant for this week is that on Monday
rather than the walking or the DIY film,
I did what's called, apparently, a YouTube rewind video,
where I took the highlights from I year's videos
and put them into a little montage.
and I'm quite pleased I did it actually because it's quite a nice little film
and I think I'm gonna do it again next year,
because it's good to look back.
And then on Wednesday we had to delve into our backlog of films
because last week it rained and this week we've been ill.
we've depleted our backlog of films quite dramatically
and I think we've only got one more film we can really draw from.
so what we learnt this week was
don't tell you our plans for the next week
unless we have something already filmed
and then we can say it's definitely edited, and it's definitely up,
and nothing else can go wrong,
then we'll say what's going to happen next week.
But other than that I think it's a bad idea to say we're gonna do this,
because life has this way of just going
"no, not today."
The other thing we've learnt is...
we knew it already
we need a backlog of films.
I was hoping that the backlog of films we already had
would see us through any time we slipped in the future with other projects
but because of wind and sickness, that's no longer possible.
We'll do it, we'll be fine, it'll be fine, it's all good.
But, despite the fact that we haven't been able to get out filming
and despite the fact that we haven't done what we set out to do,
we've still managed to get Mondays Wednesdays Fridays up,
and we've managed to get 200 subscribers, which I wanted to do by the end of January.
So those are very positive things,
and I hesitate to tell you my February goals, but here they are.
By the end of February I would like, personally,
to have reached 300 subscribers possibly 500...
Pushing it to 500 if we can.
Despite our setbacks it's all been fairly positive.
What I've been doing this week really is learning a bit more about YouTube,
which is never a bad thing,
finding films to put up, and promoting the videos,
and stuff in the background.
And yeah I've even taking a bit of time for personal writing,
because I quite like to do a bit of writing.
So that's that's been our week, it's been eventfully uneventful.
Let us know in the comments down below how your week has been
and we can compare notes as to globally how we're doing.
And I will leave you with the news that the Boston Museum of Fine Arts
has hired a puppy!
Which is nice.
I don't know what they're paying him in,
but he's to sniff out little bugs and critters that would otherwise destroy their artefacts.
It's a test job, they don't know how good he's gonna be at it yet,
but, you know, puppies being employed.
Heartwarming story all around I think.
And so, if you want to see more of our shenanigans
subscribe to see us Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
Fade to black
Eh
There you go.
That's the thing that people do isn't it?
Fates to black and then you're gone...
Like that?
No?
Eh, I'll give you some drone footage.
you

Building trust with investors - Duration: 1:37.- Investors are people too.
And if they're gonna bet, for example,
their daughter's college education on your business,
they want to know that they can trust you.
They want to know that you're
a person of character and integrity,
because they are trusting you
with their money and their future.
And that means that you've gotta be someone
who will share bad news with them.
You've gotta be someone who is willing to
share every part of your business;
the soft underbelly, the vulnerable side,
the weaknesses with your business.
So building that trust with an investor
is the number one thing that matters
in building a relationship.
And that is something that happens over time.
I think a lot of entrepreneurs wonder,
"Why can't I get money faster?"
It's because the pace that you're really on
is the pace of trust.
It's not the pace of making a decision
about how great the business is.
That's obviously very, very important,
but this person needs to trust you.
And your trust is effected by
whether or not you do what you say you're gonna do,
how honest you are about the shortcomings of your business,
your performance, your growth, your delivery,
your ability to pull in other people to solve this problem,
and your credibility in tackling the problem
that you're tackling.
Do you actually know this problem in and out?
So that trust is really important
in building relationships with investors.

LNG Demo Branded SPANISH HD - Duration: 4:02.it is the same gas used for cooking, heating homes and generating power.
liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is not readily available to most people.
It's odourless, colourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive.
it has been safely handled for more than 50 years.
of this - literally - cool fuel.
because doing so reduces its volume 600 times.
That's like shrinking
so it's easier to store and ship long distances.
you can see the LNG quickly evaporating as it beads and slides along the pan.
This is because the pan is so much warmer than the LNG.
when you rinse a hot skillet with cold tap water in your kitchen.
in the unlikely event that LNG spills on the ground.
although it would freeze any moisture that's in the soil.
Let's take a marshmallow.
It will take no time to freeze when Manin dips it in the LNG.
As you can hear, the marshmallow is now frozen.
when it's had a chance to thaw.
Some things become brittle when frozen in LNG.
when Mariah dips it in LNG.
special metals and materials are used to contain and handle LNG.
Because we know LNG is non-toxic, we can dip a graham cracker into LNG.
And after it thaws a bit, we can eat the cracker.
-Cheers! -Cheers!
-And it tastes great. -Very good.
Let's see what happens when LNG comes into contact with water.
so the LNG immediately warms and evaporates.
but in case of a spill on the water, no spill clean-up is required.
So we can actually drink this very cold water.
Oh, and the marshmallow itself?
Back to normal.
Let us illustrate what that means.
Mariah will hold this glass beaker over the candle.
And watch what happens.
You can see black carbon residue start to form.
But if I do that over this natural gas candle...
...there's hardly any residue...
...as you can clearly see.
burns at a temperature of around 700 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit,
without even igniting it.
to keep the cigarette lit.
When the LNG evaporates, it returns to a gas.
to the LNG vapours coming off of the LNG in the flask.
because the gas is cooling and becoming a liquid.
that has been cooled to the point that it becomes a liquid.
which is what makes the fuel valuable.
to keep it in its liquid form.
It really is a cool fuel!

One Legged Model Walks at New York Fashion Week - Duration: 5:03.Hey B, did you ever think you could have been a model?
No. Good.
Anyways this guy is a model, he was the first
amputee to walk London fashion week, New York fashion week, Milan fashion week
Paris fashion week, this guy has walked all over the world
I'm still working on New York fashion week.
You'll never get there. You'll never get there.
But check him out because he has.
when I see photos of myself as a model, I'm very proud, I'm always very proud
Jack Eyers has been challenging stereotypes as a catwalk model and cover star
with a difference.
I was the first amputee to walk on New York fashion week catwalk
from that I then went to Milan fashion week
London fashion week, that was really good, it's been a good career so far
the strangest thing for me, was when I was on the front cover of mens health
that was literally my life long dream
even as a kid at school I was like yeah I'd love to be on that
October 2015 I made it!
Jack was born with two legs, but struggles with a degenerative condition
called proximal femoral focal deficiency
PFFD is a congenital condition that I was born with in my right leg
it's basically a deficiency in the femur, the femur didn't develop properly
the muscle structure didn't develop properly either
the knee joint didn't develop properly and the hip joint didn't develop either so
it was a dead leg
growing up with a disability it massively effected my confidence, massively
I'd try and hide it anyway I could, it was awful, I had no inspiration
I was alone, fashion was out the window as well
I'd wear two pairs of trousers just to cover my leg, hoodie over my head
the consultants told me, the doctors said I had to finish growing before they would even
think about the measurements of amputating my leg
then when I was 16 I electively had it amputated, I chose to have it amputated
totally my choice, best decision I've ever made as well
after his amputation Jack got into fitness
and eventually starting working as a personal trainer
I became a personal trainer by chance really, I was a youth worker
and I was put onto a course which was just exercise in the community
and I just really enjoyed it
Jack is very fit, he's fitter than me definitely
we went swimming a couple of times at one of the fitness centers
and I was amazed at how much fitter he was at swimming than me
I thought I was pretty fit but he's very good
I find the job very rewarding, the success stories
is what keeps me motivated to keep personal training
he's stronger than most people, in the gym when we're training, you don't think about it
and it's not really, it doesn't hold him back at all
eventually I want to focus on just working with amputees
because I think I can really offer them something sort of special
Jack works with the charity models for diversity
which campaigns for more variety in the fashion industry
as well as supporting models in their careers
I'm sure there are occasions where I've been
singled out or treated slightly differently because of
because of the leg, because of the amputation, or even prior to the amputation
I'm that sort of guy, I'm quite blunt
if I feel like I'm being singled out I'd probably just tell you, I'd say
I'm very upfront about my leg as well, ask me whatever question you want I don't mind
I never thought that I would ever be a model
I didn't even think it was an opportunity for me
so I've set myself a couple of bit goals for this year
I want to get signed by a modeling agency
I'd like to get a contract, I think it's about time
I think the biggest thing that needs to change in the modeling industry
to assure there's more diversity is, use more diverse models
Being a disabled model, I guess you do have to work harder
you do have to work harder than most other models because you'd got a lot to prove
one of our closest friends is actually a woman named Mandy Lieveld
who is a runway coach for models
and one of the things that she teaches her students and clients
is confidence. You think about somebody like Jack, whose missing his leg
for him to have that fortitude to become a runway model
I think a lot of people could learn a lesson from someone like him
and over here in the comments we'll actually link to a video we did with her
on models walking blindfolded, so check that out as well
