On what foundation? On the friendship of the peoples?
We just saw the extent of this 'friendship' (Armenian pogroms 1988). Maybe on mutual advantage?
Well, in that case, in the words of Vysotsky, show me where the people sing and do not moan.
This is a union of poor republics. It turns out that the union hangs together on the bayonet.
How can one attain freedom if it is guarded by a bayonet?
The holy goal of society is to prevent bloodshed.
But one must understand that neither the army, nor the most vivacious calls to the people, are in a position to solve these great problems.
Lessons of the Berlin Wall
These frames have become part of history. We were filming them days before the Berlin events.
Few were upset when the Berlin wall was torn down.
Except for our film crew.
We lost such an important heading.
But later we realized, the story with the Wall is a good lesson for all of us.
And the fallen heading returned to its place.
Over here, in front of this wall, ends the world of common sense
and begins the world of socialism.
The Berlin wall, a shameful and criminal invention of the second half of the 20th century.
The demarcated line, guards in the guard towers, thick, dead corridors that separate Germans from other Germans, brothers from sisters,
son from mother.
The bayonets of the border guards are aimed inside the country... a prison.
Many tried to escape from it, they were killed.

It's striking how people from the free world were looking at this world, from behind the barbed wire.
Why have they locked themselves in prison? What are they trying to defend?
The ideals of socialism? How about poverty from wealth? Slavery from freedom? Dogma from creativite thought?
And why must this be defended with bayonets?
The story with the wall leads to a curious contemplation. I think that few authority figures had foreseen the coming changes.
This is what it means to not understand the power of national indignation.
This lack of understanding can be discouraging.
But however strange, it brings forth hope. Whomever we asked from the authorities, "when will the Berlin Wall be finally torn down?"
they answered us in deep thought, "Never." "Or at least not in the observable future."
A week passed and the wall was no more. It was still standing, but the people started disassembling it into souvenirs.
To remember the times of darkness and shame.
