Hello! What's up guys?
Today, I'm going to teach you an amazing technique for learning and memorizing vocabulary in any language.
Before we get started, remember to subscribe to the channel, click on the bell,
and turn on the English subtitles if you need them.
Alright, the technique that I'm going to teach you is what we would call "word association."
Many language teachers teach different forms of "word association,"
and today, I'm going to teach you the two variations of this technique that I use to memorize vocabulary.
The first and most common way that I memorize vocabulary in a foreign language
is by relating parts of these words to words in my own native language.
Right now, I'm studying the Greek language, and I'm a native English speaker,
so let me show you some examples of how I relate Greek vocabulary words to English words and names
to help me memorize those vocabulary words.
Even if you don't speak Greek, that doesn't matter because this technique is all about the sounds,
not the meanings.
Let's start with the Greek word "χειμώνας", which means "winter" in English.
When I first heard this word, it made me think of two words in English:
the word "he," and the name "Mona," as in the Mona Lisa.
So, to memorize the Greek word "χειμώνας," I created an association with the words "he" and "Mona."
Then, all I had to remember was to add the "s" sound at the end.
So instead of memorizing the Greek word, it feels like I'm memorizing two English words,
which is much easier for me because I'm a native English speaker.
This method might seem a little bit weird, but it really works.
Your brain is much better at remembering foreign words if they sound like words in your own language.
This technique requires a little bit of creativity on your part,
because it's not always easy to think of words in your language that sound like the word that you're trying to learn.
That's why I like to divide the vocabulary word into smaller parts to make it easier.
Let me show you another example of this.
Let's use the Greek word "διαμέρισμα," which means "apartment" in English.
Instead of trying to think of one single word in my language that this word reminded me of,
I broke this word down into three smaller parts to make it easier to create associations.
Since I'm also a Spanish speaker, I first thought of the word "día,"
and then I thought of the English words "merry" and "small."
The Greek word "διαμέρισμα" kind of sounds like a combination of my three words: día, merry, small.
The only thing that I had to remember was to drop the final "l" sound from the word "small."
And like I said before, remembering these three English words was so much easier for me
than trying to remember this long Greek word.
Now, I want you to try this. For this exercise, let's use the Greek word for "translate,"
which is "μεταφράζω"
What I want you to do is pause this video,
and try to think of two words in your native language
that you can associate with both parts of this word, "μετα" and "φράζω."
Once you think of your two words, leave them in a comment down below,
and tell us which language your words are in.
Go ahead and do that now.
Okay good, now let my teach you the second variation of the word association technique
that I use to memorize vocabulary.
This method involves associating the new word with other vocabulary words that you're learning
or with other words that you've already learned in that foreign language.
The way that I do this is to, once again,
separate the word into smaller parts and then look for similarities between these parts and parts of other words.
Let me give you an example.
When I was learning some basic adjectives in Greek,
it was a little bit hard for me because many of the adjectives in Greek are long words that are hard to remember.
Two of these adjectives that I was having trouble memorizing
were the Greek words for "interesting" and "different."
These words in Greek are "ενδιαφέρων" and "διαφορετικός"
Pretty hard words to memorize, right?
Well, what I did to make thist a little easier was to break both words up into smaller parts and compare them.
What I noticed was that both words had the sound "δια" in them.
This sound was really easy to memorize, because it sounds like the word "día" in Spanish.
I was able to memorize this sound immediately,
and then all I had to do was memorize the rest of these words
which was easier because there was less to remember.
So, whenever I think of either the word "interesting" or "different" in Greek,
I immediately remember that that word contains the sound "δια" in it,
and then I just have to remember the rest of the word.
And whenever I learn a new vocabulary word that contains the sound "δια,"
I add this word to the group of words in my mind that have that sound.
This group association between vocabulary words will help your brain remember new words
because you're connecting them to a specific sound that you already have memorized.
Okay, lastly, let me show you how I combine both variations of this word association technique
to memorize new vocabulary.
A lot of the time when I'm studying new words,
I use both of these variations together to remember one single word.
Let's use the Greek word "διαφορετικός" again for this example.
As I already mentioned to you, when I was learning this word,
I was easily able to remember the beginning of this word, "δια,"
because I already had a group of words formed in my mind that all contain this same sound.
So, I didn't have to worry about the beginning of the word;
I just needed to remember the rest of the word: "φορετικός"
For me, the two words that I immediately associated with the rest of this word were the words "for" and "ethics."
They sound similar, right?
So, whenever I need to remember the word "διαφορετικός," it's easy,
because I already know that it starts with the sound "δια,"
and then I have my two associated words, "for ethics."
Do you see how I combined both variations of the word association technique to remember this word?
Okay, let me just add more note to this video.
You might be wondering how you or I could use these methods to learn every vocabulary word,
and then retain all of these word associations in our head.
Well, the thing that you need to remember is that this word association technique is for learning new words
that you're encountering for the first time.
Once you've reviewed each new vocabulary word enough times,
eventually, you're going to have those words completely memorized,
and you won't need to keep going to back to those word associations.
So these associations are just for new words that you're trying to cement in your brain.
Alright, as I mentioned at the beginning of the video,
these two methods of word association are what I use to memorize new vocabulary,
and they've really helped me in my language learning.
I highly recommend that you try both variations of this technique that I taught you today
when you're studying new vocabulary in whatever language that you're learning.
You'll be surprised at how much easier it will be for you to memorize new words,
and how much more vocabulary you can retain in your memory by using this technique.
If you have any questions for me, leave them in a comment down below.
I hope you enjoyed this video.
