with long-time friend and owner of Air Allergen & Mold Testing.
Richard Johnson: My name is Richard Johnson and I'm the President/CEO of Air Allergen
& Mold Testing.
When we talk to a client on the phone when they call us, it is to understand what their
questions are and what their concerns are and then we will come up with a sampling strategy
to answer their questions.
And it would be at that point that we would decide whether or not just knowing what the
genus level name is, like aspergillus or penicillium, will be adequate or if they need to go more
deeply and learn about these species.
It is more expensive to do a species analysis than it is to do something to the genus level
in the analysis.
And cost is always a concern, that's a trade-off between what you're learning and the cost
of doing it.
We look at it as if we're painting a picture and every sample that we take adds a color,
adds a line, adds some detail that allows you to understand what the picture is.
So we have to understand what we're looking for to begin with and then we can design a
sampling strategy that we believe will give us enough information to make out what the
picture is without necessarily incurring the cost of making a Rembrandt or some very expensive
set of sampling.
Carson: So it sounds like when you do comprehensive testing, a combination both of air samples,
surface samples, carpet dust samples as well as development of those samples in your labs,
you develop a more comprehensive picture of not only the amount and types of spores but
also their health effects in their particular species.
Richard: Yes, that's absolutely correct.
We learned something from each of the pieces of information we do.
Another thing that we make a point of doing is in discussing the sampling strategy with
the client before we go there.
We try to learn as much as we can that they have, in terms of their experience and the
things that they know about, to help fill-in pieces of the puzzle to know what we're looking
for and to make sure that we're sampling in the areas that are important.
Carson: Yeah, and I know Richard from our end, we will occasionally be approached by
clients.
And maybe as you alluded to, we'll go with more limited sampling from maybe another environmental
company that is charging them, maybe half as much, and I tell those clients, unfortunately,
that when we're analyzing their case, the report either because it doesn't have any
written findings or because of the limited sampling just doesn't provide the information
necessary to move forward with the case.
And then what the client finds themselves in the situation of, unfortunately, is having
to get a mold report - the initial mold report - and then having to come to a company like
Air Allergen for more comprehensive report, so they end up paying twice in the end.
Richard: That's really true and that is always a struggle especially if people have incurred
a lot of medical bills or something and are financially strapped as a result of it.
The tendency would be too well, "Can I get by with just an air sampler?
Can I get by with a tape sampler?"
And we discourage that because what we have found, you can go into a home, we've been
fooled before ourselves, you know, even doing.
You go into a home, take an air sample, looks okay and then you take a carpet dust sample
and you find out that even though it was okay at the time that you took the air sample,
they've had a history of problems that have not shown up in the air sample.
So doing a more comprehensive inspection and taking enough samples to really understand
what's going on in the environment is very important.
Otherwise you're going to be making choices that you either might be doing less than what
you need to do or you might be doing more than what you need to do.
You could have a situation, for instance, where you had a spike in the some kind of
air samples for some reason or whatever but no history of it and making a decision wrong
in that direction.
Or, if someone doesn't take the samples in the right kind of samples and someone has
a health problem and you don't identify it, you could be making choices that could be
adverse to their interest there.

so, in this way, the many thoughts, which discourage us,
lose our enthusiasm and also push our zeal down,
and we disappointed and sad, inspite of having the strength within us,
being sad and disheartened, whatever are our weapons,
whether it be knowledge, understanding, virtues,
or be it powers, we put down all those weapons,
and lacking courage, we accept our defeat,
we accept it and the result of this acceptance is that,
that the happiness in my life,
I lose it, my life is not happy any more,
being among the family, too, I will feel that I am a stranger,
among everyone, amidst the crowd,
in a group, in the joint family,
being among them, too, I will feel that I am alone,
in many context, in the family, of happiness, jubiliation,
joy, many will be celebrating it like a festival,
everyone's face will be happy,
but, I in some corner, alone, remembering, some issues,
with a sad face will be sitting,
will visibly cry or cry from within,
and the question which will arise now, is, have I experienced anything like this in my life?
in less, more or lots of percentage,
or repeatedly, I have experienced them, in more or less percentage
that I repeatedly, in situations, with relatives, loved one,
with acquaintances, in my interactions, I am fighting,
am tolerating without fighting,
also am facing, by remaining quiet,
also by tolerating. But, always, in this same way,
will I be leading my life and going ahead
will I be weeping like this?
Crying like this, as, in life, daily, different kinds of feelings,
whether they are positive, good feelings or negative felings,
bad feelings, all these keep coming before me,
and when they come, they have their influence over me,
and being influenced by them I am sometimes happy, sometimes sad,
sometimes, I celebrate the happiness of victory,
sometimes, I feel guilty having been defeated,
sometimes, the zeal and enthusiasm of living increases,
sometimes, the enthusiasm and zeal to live decreases,
but, if we, like during, Diwali we worship our Books of Accounts,
so first we complete the accounts of old ones,
and then start anew, so, when we complete the old ones,
then, our complete attention, in the books of accounts, is, how much have we saved,
how much is loss, how much do I have loans to be repaid,
how much have I saved, how much have I increased,
all this become clear in front of our eyes,
and when this clarity comes in front of us,
then, we plan for the new year once again,
that now we will do something. So, this rise and fall which occurs in our life,
our state of mind, which repeatedly, fluctuates, between going up and down,
due to which what is the state of mind in life?
What have I understood about this life?
Have I understood this life to be a battlefield?
Life to be a struggle, a battle,
there be solutions in life, this is what I understood,
I have understood life, to be a blessing from God,
understood life to be a curse for me,
what did I understand? Each one's story of life is their own,
but, in the present context, when each person visualises the self,
then, among majority of them, there is unhappiness, peacelessness, to face situations,
to fight when in trouble, in every way, there is tussle going on,
in situations, we have to keep compromising,
if my state is also the same way, at present,
that I am happy sometimes, sad at other times, sometimes flying, with hope and sometimes falling down with despair,
so, then, I will have to take some firm decision in my life,
a firm step, with complete determination, I need to make, first in my thoughts,
and I need to think, whether my situation,
I wish to change?
Do I wish to come out of this life, which is filled with problems?
Do I want to come out, if my answer to all these situations,
if it is yes, that I have to come out of those situations,
but, where this but, emerges, there is a big queue of questions,
and then, the question now arises, if I have so much strength,
like previously, whatever situations came before me,
and in those situations, I had a tussle, mostly I faced defeat,
coincidentally, I won over them, now, if the same situations, come before me with more force,
will I be able to fight with them,
am I competant, powerful and will I be victorious?
Do I have such a self confidence?
Before you win over any situation or problem,
we have to know this, very well,
who am I, who is going to fight? My fight is with whom?
Who is the person who is going to fight with me?
What is the capacity and specialities of the other person who is going to fight with me?
What is the potential, speciality and strength inside me?
Who are with the opposite person and who are with me?
The laws, customs, methods which the opposite person adopts or makes,
or suddenly whatever is made, the sudden creation of those laws, customs, methods, whatever be the strategic plans,
which they adopt to play with me, can I give a reply to those strategic moves?
So for that, I first need knowledge,
first I should know it, to understand anything,
or to reach any goal or to connect any relation,
in order to attain anything from someone,
it is very essential to know that person, situation, topic,
first we gather information, this information is knowledge,
it is on a intellectual level, we have to have knowledge about everything,
of every small thing. You are coming here, first, you have to know this,
that, the place where you are going, to listen discourse, where is that place?
What time is the programme there?
What is the topic today?
When I go there and listen to the lecture, what is my goal?
Why am I going and why do I go?
What am I going to take from ther? I need to have all this information with me.
Like if I say in short, that I, to listen to spiritual, religious lecture,
which I like to hear, but inspite of liking it,
the address of the place, where this lecture is going to take place, this information, is very essential.
Or I will be wandering about, but, when we take the information of the place,
then, we come to the right place,
sit and listen to the lecture which is appealing to the mind,
Take the small small activities, like from the moment we get up in the morning, whether it be brushing, or daily routine acts,
whether it be making lunch, breakfast or go to work,
whatever action we do, we need to have information, of every action, before,
which, when, we are in the womb, of the mother, is given to us by the mother,
and when we come out of the womb, mother teaches us everything,
she introduces us, the father is introduced to us by the mother,
mother also introduces herself,
she introduces us to all the relatives, she also gives us information about everything,
then also, how to eat, drink, walk, talk,
to study, grow up, to move ahead in life,
manners, discipline, sanskar, nature,
how and what to do and how to move ahead in life?
As the mother, the way she gives the lessons, and the amount of attention, we give to those teachings,
we will be moulded in that way and will shape like that.
So, first we get information, after that what does mother do?
Practically she makes us do it and we get better understanding,
we become intelligent and then we begin to feel,
what is truth, lies, right, wrong,
good, bad. When, we perform actions, by feeling them, then we become experienced,
and when we perform actions after being experienced,
then we do not face obstacles easily,
and if we face obstacles, then, the one, who is holding our hand or our well wishers, who are they, we also get information about them,
and we then hold their hands and seeking their advice, we move ahead in our life,
either the experience becomes our teacher or our Guru becomes our guiding spirit,
when there is no one and there is darkness on all four sides,
when such situations arise,
then, at that time what do we do? At that time we remember God,
we remember that companion, whom we do not know,
whom we do not recognise, whom we have never seen,
Have any of you seen among you all?
No one has seen Him? Did He, introduce himself, saying, that you have been born through Him?
Did anyone tell on his own? No, no one has said.
So, such a God, who is invisible, who is a stranger, in his invisible form,
who has not been seen, not known about Him, but see the faith,
which all of us have on Him, that, when no one will help me, the one above will surely help me.
Because I have heard, about Him, that, those, who speak the truth and perform right actions,
who have true intentions, He will surely help them,
so the one who helps the self, he will be helped by God.
But, the one who does not help the self,
he cannot be helped by God too.
So, it has been said, that become so courageous,
that before every destiny, God who determines our destiny, is Supreme Soul who writes our destiny,
so instead of making Supreme Soul write our destiny,
make your determination so strong, that before every destiny,
before writing your destiny, God asks the child,
God asks me, what is your wish, that will be written as your destiny.
He will not write His wish, but, before writing, He will ask us our desire and write that as our destiny,
so what do we wish, we want to create our own destiny,
or do we want our fate to be decided by others,
God is mine, so He is asking me and walking along with me,
before creating my destiny, He had asked me,
so He will remain with me,
but, on the basis of others, like listening to what others say,
we take the decision of our fate,
and then we curse our destiny, saying my fate is only like this,
this is what I am destined for,
nothing good will happen to me,
such people who become disappointed and sad,
always looking down on the self as a defeated person,
to all those brothers & sisters I would like to say,
in life, never lose your courage,
because you are children of God,
God is that personality, who makes gold out of mud,
makes touchstone out of stone,
one who is drowning in the whirlpool, He brings that person to the shore,
one who reaches his House, will never feel defeated,
he will always remain victorious,
because the praise of God is infinite.
